Cassette deck or MD recorder Cassette deck To audio input
This receiver is equipped with both the composite video and S-video input/output terminals for connecting video components. You do not have to connect both the composite video and S-video terminals. However, remember that the video signals from the composite video input terminals are output only through the composite video output terminals, while the ones from the S-video input terminals are output only through the S-video output terminals. Therefore, if a recording video component and a playing video component are connected to the receiver through the different video terminals, you cannot record the picture from the playing component on the recording component. In addition, if the TV and a playing video component are connected to the receiver through the different video terminals, you cannot view the playback picture from the playing component on the TV. To view and record the playback picture from the video component connected to the VCR 2 jacks, you must connect the TV and the recording video component through the composite video terminals.

DAP modes
The sound heard in a concert hall or club consists of direct sound and indirect sound early reflections and reflections from behind. Direct sounds reach the listener directly without any reflection. On the other hand, indirect sounds are delayed by the distances of the ceiling and walls. These direct sounds and indirect sounds are the most important elements of the acoustic surround effects. The DAP mode can create these important elements, and gives you a real being there feeling. This mode can be used when the front speakers are connected to this receiver (without respect to the rear/center speaker connection). You can select one of the following to your preference. LIVE CLUB: Gives the feeling of a live music club with a low ceiling. Gives clear vocal and the feeling of a concert hall. Gives the spacious feeling of a pavilion with a high ceiling.
DANCE CLUB: Gives a throbbing bass beat. HALL: PAVILION:
3D THEATER: Reproduces the sound field of a large theater. This mode can be selected when only front speakers are connected to this receiver and REAR SPK and CENTER SPK is set to NONE (see page 14). Note on the subwoofer sound when using the 3D-PHONIC modes Sound will or will not come out of the subwoofer according to the selected 3D-PHONIC mode. With 3D ACTION selected: No sound comes out. With 3D DIGITAL selected: Sound comes out if the subwoofer channel signals come into this receiver ( LFE of the signal indicators lights up see page 10) while playing a multi-sound source encoded with Dolby Digital or DTS Digital Surround. With 3D THEATER selected: If FRONT SPK is set to SMALL, sound comes out while playing any source. If FRONT SPK is set to LARGE, sound comes out only if the subwoofer channel signals come into this receiver ( LFE of the signal indicators lights up see page 10) while playing a multi-sound source encoded with Dolby Digital or DTS Digital Surround. DTS Digital Surround (DTS SURROUND) is another discrete 5.1-channel digital audio format available on CD, LD, and DVD software. Compared to Dolby Digital, the DTS Digital Surround format has a lower audio compression rate which enables it to add breadth and depth to the sounds reproduced. As such, DTS Digital Surround features natural, solid, and clear sound. Another multi-channel digital encoding format introduced by Digital Theater Systems, Inc. is DTS Extended Surround (DTS-ES). It greatly improves the 360-degree surround impression and space expression by adding the third surround channelsurround back channel. DTS-ES includes two signal formats with different surround signal recording methodsDTS-ES Discrete 6.1ch and DTS-ES Matrix 6.1ch. You can use Virtual Surround Back (see page 20) when playing back DTS-ES software. This function creates the great surround effect from the behind as if you have connected the surround back speakers.

Activating the Surround Modes
Available Surround modes vary depending on the incoming signals. Activating one of the Surround modes for a source automatically recalls the memorized settings and adjustments (see pages 16 to 22).
For DTS multi-channel digital software (except 2-channel and Dual Mono software), incoming signals are automatically detected and DTS SURROUND is activated.
Auto Surround Function
This receiver has Auto Surround Function, which allows you to enjoy the Surround mode simply by selecting the source (with digital input selected for that source). Auto Surround works. When multi-channel signal is detected, an appropriate Surround mode will be turned on. When Dolby Digital 2-channel with surround signals is detected, PLII MOVIE will be selected. When Dolby Digital 2-channel without surround signals is detected, SURROUND OFF will be selected. When Linear PCM signal is detected, nothing will change.
When the Dolby Digital or DTS multi-channel digital signal stops coming in, PLII MOVIE will be activated.
For analog sources and digital 2-channel software, you can select one of the following Surround modes. Each time you press SURROUND, Surround modes change as follows:
PRO LOGIC
