Rated for what it is. I was very particular about what I wanted in a home theater system, and Optical input was at the top of my list. Good quality, with some operational downsides I got this system to use 5.1 digital audio through its optical input. For the price.

Audio CD CD-R

DIGITAL AUDIO

Disc structureDVD, Video CD (VCD/SVCD) and Audio CD (CD) A DVD disc consists of Titles, and each title may be divided into some Chapters. (See Example 1.) For example, if a DVD disc contains some movies, each movie may have its own title number, and it may be further divided into some chapters. On the other hand, a VCD/SVCD or CD consists of Tracks. (See Example 2.) In general, each song has its own track number. (On some discs, each track may also be divided by Indexes.) When playing back a VCD/SVCD with Playback Control (PBC) function, you can select what to view using the menu shown on the TV screen. (While operating a Video CD using the menu, some of the functions such as Repeat and Track Search may not work.)

Example 1: DVD disc

CD-RW On some DVD or VCD/SVCD discs, their actual operations may be different from what is explained in this manual. This is due to the disc programming and disc structure, but not a malfunction of this system. DVD-R discs recorded with the DVD VIDEO format can be played back. However, some discs may not be played back because of the disc characteristics or recording conditions. Note that unfinalized disc cannot be played back. The following discs cannot be played back: DVD-Audio, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, CD-ROM, CD-I, (CD-I Ready), Photo CD, etc. Playing back these discs will generate noise and damage the speakers. * Note on Region Code DVD players and DVD Video discs have their own Region Code numbers. This system only can play back DVD discs whose Region Code numbers include 1. Examples:
Example 2 : Video CD/Audio CD
If a DVD with the inadequate Region Code numbers is loaded, Invalid Region appears on the TV and playback cannot start.
Notes on CD-R and CD-RW User-edited CD-Rs (Recordable) and CD-RWs (Rewritable) can be played back only if they are already finalized. The system can play back CD-Rs or CD-RWs recorded on a personal computer if they have been recorded in the audio CD format or recorded in MP3 format (see page 38). However, they may not be played back depending on their characteristics or recording conditions. Before playing back CD-Rs or CD-RWs, read their instructions or cautions carefully. Some CD-Rs or CD-RWs may not be played back on this unit because of their disc characteristics, damage or stain on them. CD-RWs may require a longer readout time. This is caused by the fact that the reflectance of CD-RWs is lower than for regular CDs.

MP3 Playback

This system is incorporated with an MP3 decoder. You can playback MP3 tracks (files) recorded on CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and CD-ROMs. Notice that files and tracks are used interchangeably. Example: MP3 disc structure and playback order

Hierarchies

What is MP3?
MP3 is an abbreviation of Motion Picture Experts Group (or MPEG) Audio Layer 3. MP3 is simply a file format with a data compression ratio of 1:10 (128 Kbps*). That means, by using MP3 format, one CD-R or CD-RW can contain 10 times as much data volume as a regular CD can. * Bit rate is the average number of bits that one second of audio data will consume. The measuring unit used is Kbps (1000 bits per second). To get a better audio quality, choose a higher bit rate. The most popular bit rate for encoding (recording) is 128 Kbps.

MP3 File Compatibility

This system can only read MP3 files that are recorded in the format that is compliant with ISO 9660 Level 1 or Level 2. The system can play MP3 files only with the following file extensions:.MP3,.Mp3,.mP3, and.mp3. This unit can show ID3v1* tags on the TV-screen. * An MP3 file can contain file information called ID3 Tag where its album name, performer, track title, etc. are recorded. There are two versionsID3v1 (ID3 Tag version 1) and ID3v2 (ID3 Tag version 2). This unit is not compatible with ID3v2.

7 $ % ^ & * (

Disc structureHow are MP3 files recorded and played back?
MP3 files (tracks) can be recorded in folders, in PC terminology. During recording, the files and folders can be arranged in a way similar to arranging files and folders of computer data. Root is similar to the root of a tree. Every file and directory can be linked to the root. In compliance with ISO 9660, the maximum allowable depth of nested foldersso-called hierarchyis eight (inclusive of the root). Playback order, files search order, and folder search order of the MP3 files recorded on a disc are determined by the writing (or encoding) application; therefore, playback order may be different from the one you have intended while recording the folders and the files.

JVC TH-A35

DVD home cinema system

Baby boomer
It may be the junior member of JVCs all-in-one family, but David Smith finds much to like about the TH-A35
Its annoying when a younger sibling stands up to a bigger brother or sister. Just ask Venus Williams, who is now largely eclipsed by the younger Serena. Theres little chance of JVCs TH-A35 eclipsing the companys majestic TH-A75R, however, which knocked us out in our March 03 issue with its style and performance. That said, the TH-A35 comes in at half the price and looks pretty damned good in its own right.
It does a lot and does it very well indeed

DESCRIPTION

If we awarded Best Buys for looks alone, this system would already be home and dry. The main unit is surprisingly slimline considering it houses analogue amplification for a 5.1-channel home cinema system. It weighs just 6.6kg and stands only 65mm tall. Its finished in silver, naturally, and has a groovy design quirk thanks to a lopsided fascia, with transport controls slung beneath the display panel and volume knob to the right. Its no lightweight in terms of amplification, either. The five satellite speakers get a healthy 45W apiece, while the sub is served a hearty 100W helping. Rear connectivity is fairly good, with an optical digital audio input for hooking up another piece of

AV gear. We would have liked an electrical option as well, though. Video output comes in all the expected modes RGB via Scart, S-video and composite video. Component video output would have been nice, but its omission is forgiveable at this price point. The speaker connections are springclip types, but they are solid and the colour-coding will help newbies with setup. The speakers are similarly sleek and silver, the little SP-THA35F satellites sitting nicely in the palm. They are solid enough at 650g, though, and have a power rating of 45W. Frequency range is claimed to be as low as 90Hz, which may be on the optimistic side. Backing up the five satellites is the SP-WA35 passive subwoofer, with a quoted frequency range of 25-200Hz. Again, we think this bottom end is hopeful. Acting as the ringmaster is a multi-function remote control that is packed with buttons but easy enough to use.

OPERATION

A decent length of speaker cable is provided for each channel shame theres no Scart lead, though. The recommendation to use the cords

or cables supplied with other components or purchase them at an electrical appliance store is not particularly helpful. Still, we have few complaints about ease of setup. The onscreen display is a bit basic and the main unit takes a moment to respond to the remote control, but the options on offer are straightforward. Select the screen ratio appropriate for your TV (4:3, 4:3 letterbox or 16:9) and specify whether you will be using the S-video connection or not. Freeze-frame playback can be set for Field, Frame or Auto. The Setting sub-menu is where you adjust speaker output. A test tone helps with this, but we would recommend listening to the system for a while before delving into these options. When ready, you can adjust the delay time for the centre and rear speakers to suit the layout of your system. Output levels can be tweaked for the centre, rears and subwoofer, but not for the front stereo pair. With a range going from -6dB to +6dB you can boost output from selected speakers to balance the overall soundstage. As well as the normal Dolby Digital, DTS and Pro-Logic II sound modes, there are five DSP options

available: Live House, Hall, Concert, Stadium and Theater. These modes are intended to create a surround sound effect on material which is not specifically encoded for surround sound. Old movies and CDs are prime candidates, but the effects are not to everyones taste. In playback mode you can engage slow-motion playback as slow as 1/5th normal speed, as well as watching frame by frame and searching at up to 20x normal speed. A zoom lets you move in on the action in 12 steps. Normal playback can continue while zoomed in and you can also move the zoom area around the screen. Other playback options include program, repeat and A-B repeat play, while Dynamic Range Control evens out sound to prevent sudden loud bursts from annoying the neighbours at night. All in all, this is a comprehensive range of playback options and the remote offers an intuitive way of exploring them.

a sonic wallop thats a worthy test of any system. Results are extremely impressive. The picture is bright, colourful and free from digital artefacts. While inferior DVD decks burden a picture with blocking and pixellation, the TH-A35 passes with flying colours. Skin tones are realistic even amid the vibrantly colourful costumes and theres bags of fine detail on show. The trickplay options work flawlessly and even when zoomed in the picture holds up remarkably well.
On the downside, this system is noisy in operation. The analogue amplification packed into that tiny main unit requires some serious cooling, and the fan employed to do the task is far from discreet. At low volume levels this is quite distracting and stops this system from winning a coveted Best Buy badge. Finally, although the audio spec looks perfectly adequate on paper, in practice there isnt an awful lot of volume on offer.

CONCLUSION

This is an impressive entry-level system from JVC. Only the noisy operation detracts from performance and a trial run is essential to see if this is an issue for you. Its not recommended for large viewing rooms either, although its somewhat restrained volume levels will prove sufficient for most living rooms. In all other ways we are talking about an accomplished performer with an attractive price tag. As always, shop around for bargains and you could soon be the proud owner of a damned fine budget all-in-one system s

First impressions from the sound system are also very good. The satellites and subwoofer mesh extremely well, creating a coherent soundstage rather than separate high- and low-level areas. The subwoofer is restrained and refrains from throwing out too much bass. This is a very sensible approach and means that no tweaking of speaker output levels is needed.
