| The Kodak Z650 Digital Camera provides decent picture quality with 6.0+ megapixels. Inexpensive, high quality, easy to operate. That about sums it up. We upgraded our old digital camera to this camera about a year ago. | |

| The Kodak Z650 Digital Camera has a lot to offer for a very reasonable price. The camera is very simple to use, and for what I have used it for. I have owned my Z650 for a couple weeks now and can say that it has been nothing less than perfect. I am not a professional photographer by any means. | |

| I picked this camara because it looked pretty simple compared to others. This camera has served its purpose very well. I bought the camera with some suspicion but after opening the cardboard box. Although I have only had the camera since June, it has served me well in my purposes. Although it is not a very rugged camera. | |

Is this Crazy - or What ?
By Joe Sopko
We've been griping and whining about the high price of replacement parts versus the low cost of product for some time now. It's not unusual to find that the part that you need to fix something costs almost as much as the entire product, in fact the joke is that "I'll go to wallmart and buy a set so that I've got a supply of parts ". Well, that scenario is not just true for Consumer Electronics. Yesterday, my Shop Light Died - the Ballast failed. I guess they just don't make things to last anymore. This 2 tube, 4 ft fixture hung over my workbench when I worked at RCA, was carried to ge when they took us over, and when ge closed, I bought the Shop Fixtures from ge to open my own shopincluding this Shop light. It must be well over 40 years old as it was hanging at RCA when I started there in '65. Well, it failed and I went up to Home Depot to get a ballast. They had quite an array of Ballasts, including the one I needed at $19.95. When I picked it up & turned to leave, a display on the other side of the aisle caught my eye. Would you believe that they have an entire 2 tube, 4ft fluorescent Shop Light fixture for $7.50 ! ? ! Including the Chain ! I was astounded - a complete fixture for One Third of the cost of the ballast. Is This Crazy, or what ! Yeah, it's a cheap Communist Chinese Piece of Crap that shouldn't have been allowed into the country in the first place, but there it wasand they got me. I just couldn't justify paying three times the cost for just one part. I rationalized it by saying that this P.O.C. didn't have to last 40 years like the other one did. It just has to last until the repair industry dies, and from what I can see that is not going to be too much longer. The Speaker July 2010 Page 3

IS IT LIVE? OR IS IT - - Memorex?
Well, it
Aint LIVE ! Lets face it, if it was Live, this Memorex MLTDLCD Television/ DVD Combo wouldnt be sitting here in a Repair Shop, now Would It? If it was Live, it wouldnt be sitting here Dark as the Night and as Silent as the Grave, either Would It? But It Is, Dark and Silent, that is, and we might just as well say that it is Dead because there isnt even a Flicker on this piece. No Power Light, No Clicks, No Nothin. The Back came off easily enough: Theres One large screw in the center section, and 2 small screws at the bottom of that panel and then it lifts out with a downward tug to clear some tabs, and then a lifting to pull the black plastic cover out of the cabinet. Next, you have to remove a metal shield (3 more screws) and the circuit boards are exposed. Gawd! - Six Screws and this thing is in the Service position without having to remove the entire Cabinet back. This looks mighty reminiscent of a Polaroid branded product and we were beginning to get a little worried. If this thing is That easy to get apart, you just Know that it is going to make up for it by being a Royal Paininnyass to repair or be too expensive to complete. With a dead set, you start with the basics, and c o n f i r m presence of AC Line voltage input (Aint you

Supply board was removed and carried over to the workbench where more basic checks were made: ESR was measured on all the electrolytic capacitors, mainly from force of habit since this is a SMPS. All the caps checked good, and none were Bulged so we moved on to the Next Suspect.
Junctions on all the Transistors and Diodes were checked starting with the largest, since the Power Carriers are most likely to fail. After a few licks of the Meter Leads, we struck Pay Dirt!: D-10, Right Smack-Dab in the Center of the Power Supply PCB measured to be a Dead Short! This is a Large diode with Thick Leads, so its built to carry a lot of current. Even Better, it has a Real Number stamped on it that I could find on the B&D Website and see the characteristics of the device. The HER304 diode is listed as a 400V 3A Fast Recovery diode, and they even listed a Substitute for it in a MUR460G (600v 4A) that was In Stock for a Whopping 49. The diode was changed in a Trice, the board reinstalled into the Telly, AC reapplied, and we were rewarded by the Red Standby Light illuminating the front panel of the TV where there was naught but darkness a little while before. The Power Button was pressed, and the Light changed from Red to Blue, and the Screen lit up with the familiar visage of Judge Judy since it was 4pm. A disc was inserted into the DVD Player and that functioned normally, as well. Wow! A completed repair for an expenditure of 49 in Parts and a little basic troubleshooting instead of replacing a $130 (Our Cost) Board. What a novel Idea!
the presence of Raw B+.
They were both OK, so we looked at the Plugs on the Power Supply board and found that the voltage supplies were marked adjacent to the pins of the plug. That was nice of the Board manufacturer to silkscreen that on the board because there sure wasnt any Service Data that I could find for this Quality Product of Communist China. Why our government allows products to be sold without product support is beyond me, but thats a Rant for another time. Voltages were measured on the Plugs and they were all found to be lacking including the SBY 5v Line, confirming that the fault lies on the Power board. Shopjimmy did list the 899AB0-IPOS120H Power Supply to be available, but the cost of $130 might have priced the repair out of the customers comfort zone. Besides, we wanted to make an attempt to actually FIX something without complete board replacement, even though there was no service data or product support available - we ARE Technicians, after all - and not Trunk Monkeys. The Power
So the Communist Chinese were thwarted once more by an American Worker who was unwilling to embrace the Throw Away Society and the non-support of the manufacturer. Hey, Chairman Mao Up Yours ! Companion article, Page 10 Page 5

The Audio Corner
Do you repair Audio? Have you ever repaired Audio? With the times being what they are, perhaps you are beginning to take in Component Audio Systems for repairs when you never have before and discovering that they pose their own Special problems that you dont see within the sound section of a TV set. If that describes you, then were glad that you stopped in this corner for a visit. Well talk about Receivers, Tape Decks, CD Players, Turntables, and many products that most pointedly do NOT have an imaging screen. If you Dont do audio, well, just pass us by and go lip-read somewhere else.
Todays Topic: The Bass are Bitin NO - You Fool, I dont mean the BASS are Bitin - I Mean The BASS are Bitin thats BASS as in Treble & Bass - Like in High Notes and Low Notes Like Tone Controls. This IS The Audio Corner, after all. If you want Bass, I Got It! At least NOW I do, after fixing this JBL Powered SubWoofer model PSW-D112. This Baby is HUGE! It is a Cube about 18x18x18 with a Big Ol 15 woofer being driven by a 250 Watt Class D amplifier. Whats Class D? You say? We all learned about Class A, B,& C amps back in Electronics school (although when Most
nesdaOHIOANS learned about them, they used type 45 Vacuum Tubes).
Well, a Class D amplifier is a different breed of cat. Many techs compare it to a SMPS driving a Speaker. There is an internal oscillator whose duty cycle is controlled by the excursions of the audio signal, which then pulses on & off the output devices. The pulse width and repetition rate at the output is controlled by the audio signal, which is then rolled into an audio current waveform by a low pass filter to be fed to the speakers.
That seems like a lot of bother to go through when you could just apply a signal to the Grid of a Vacuum Tube, but people have a taste for Bright, New, and Shiny things these days. Seriously, the Real reason for using a class D amp is Efficiency. Much of the current of a Linear (Class A, B, C) amplifier is wasted in the form of heat, but with a class D amplifier, efficiencies of 90% being common - as opposed to about 50% with a Class AB Amp this lets the manufacturer design a circuit with a fair amount of Audio Power and get away with using a little bitty (chintzy) IC Chip.
S64AMI
Not that This chip is Little or Bitty or Chintzy. This S64AMI IC is going to put 250 Watts into that 15 Woofer, so it does have some Heft to it as you can see in Figure 3. Its that Large Black Encapsulated Piece, sitting Edge-On in the middle of the PCB. You better hope that you dont need one, because it is NLA (big surprise). You can go googling, but all you will find is people griping that they cant find any. I cant imagine why our government doesnt Force manufacturers to make parts available for their products! Thats #1 on my list of Pet Peeves! Fortunately for me, the Power IC was Not the cause of this Dead Set. Instead, the cause of the dead set was an Open Yellow Wire in the Power Supply Section, as shown in Fig 3. Continued Page 8 The Speaker July 2010 Page 7
Yellow
Page 8
Continued From Page 7 The Spade Lug on the end had come loose from the Spade on the PCB. The end was discolored, so you could see that the current drawn by this had produced a lot of heat and the Spadelug had lost its spring-grip. The yellow wire was stripped and soldered to the spade, and power was restored but that wasnt the End of our problems. Reminder: If you are having difficulty seeing the pictures in the Paper version of The Speaker you may view them in greater detail and in Living Color at www.nesda-ohio.com. The Power may have returned, but the Sound was Garbled. A Schematic would certainly have come in handy, but You sure aint gonna get one from JBL. They are SO proprietary about their products! Another one of my Pet Peeves. I cant imagine why a company would make things more difficult for a technician to fix their products. Googling produced scant results for a schematic, until I remembered a web-site posted on the Tech-Assist Service Forum. Let me introduce you to Elektro Tanya ! Elektro-Tanya NO This isnt a substitute for Bob Lowes Cousin Trixie www.elektrotanya.com is a web-site that has a LOT of schematics that you just cant find somewhere else. In the month since our introduction, I have used her services several times and She had this JBL Subwoofers schematic, too. Now let me tell you that you will have to do 2 things to use her: 1-Sign up for a FREE account (your downloads are limited, otherwise) and 2Learn to speak Hungarian (Its a web-site in Hungary). The good news is that there is an option for english subtitles and it is worth it to get service manuals that you cant get elsewhere! Included in this JBL service manual were technical bulletins one of which mentioned this subwoofers propensity for Intermittant connections on that S64AMI chip, and there were several. Subwoofers live a hard life if you consider all the vibration that the PCB has to contend with. You wonder just how any of the components manage to stay connected. Resoldering those many intermittants didnt help with the Garbled Sound, however. Plan B was to call over the Dick Smith ESR Meter and test the electrolytics Hey, we DID compare this to a SMPS circuit, didnt we? Well, just like an SMPS, 3 capacitors showed High ESR: C40 (10uf@16v) and C42(100uf@16v) on the Bottom side of the PCB see Fig 5, and C10(4.7uf@100v Non Polarized) on the Top side of the board see Fig 3. Yes, those components were mounted just like that, hanging off of the PCB as were the occasional diode coil and resistor. It looked as though they were an afterthought. Replacing all 3 of the capacitors restored the lovely rolling tones of the Bass to the PSW-D112, even though it did ripple the waters a bit and scare the Bass (Heh-Heh).
I connected my CD of The Phantom of the Opera and pointed the Subwoofer to the wall shared with the Barber Shop next door Fed about 200 Watts to that 15 Woofer and then went to the diner across the street for a cup of coffee. I thought it a fitting reward for the loud music that the barbers play and comes bleeding through my wall. (#3 on list of pet peeves)
The owner came promptly to pick up the unit a shame really since Im sure the barbers were enjoying Phantom instead of the Rap Music they usually play. I Do have to say that 200 watts of Bass into that woofer shook loose a coating of dust from the ceiling tiles. For a while it looked as though it was snowing. The owner said that he was surprised by the failure because even though he had owned it for a while, that it had only about 3 hours of use on it. I gotta tell ya, from the looks of that PCB in figure 5, it seemed like there was one whole LOT more time on it than that. Those dark spots on the board arent Paint! Well, maybe they give it a really good and long Air Check at the factory.

Letters, We get letters.
Deer Mr. Editer I jest wanna thank you-all for printin that there letter about that Memorex LCD TV (you know- that model MLTD2622). I own a Tee-Vee repair shop here in Ohio and this here Speaker article hepd me out Big Time! You see, I jest had me a ELEMENT LCD TV model FLX2611 that was dead just like the one in yer story. I read yer story with interest an I noticed a similarity between yore Memorex an my Element! Like yours, Mine was Dead. Like Yours, there werent no manuals or nothin, Like yours, mine had a Big Screw right in the middle of the Back. Like yours, mine had a removable cover an shield. An like yours, mine had a IPOS120H Power Supply ! Unlike yours, when puts my model number into the ShopJimmy website, they didnt list no power supply board for this one. All they listed was the CONTROL BOX (Sounds like one of them Polaroids) which consists of the Main Board AND the Power supply board together - For $225 - Dealer Cost ! Hell, Aint no-one gonna git one o these Off Brand 26 Pieces of Communist Chinese Feces fixed for what the repair would have to be priced at. Even if I searched under the Part Number of that IPOS120H Power Supply Board, they still wants a Hunnerd an Twenny Bucks for the power supply! Thats when I remembered You writ up that Memorex! I looked at My Power Supply Board and seen that it was just like the one you had that nice pixture of. An Right there in the Middle of mine was that there Big Fat D-10 Diode. I was on that Quick as a Chicken on a Cricket and when I plugs it back up, it comes right on, jest like the one in Yore story. I wanna thanks you anThe Speaker for given me a Quickie - an I dont mean Trixie.

POETRY CORNER
With apologies to Elizabeth Barrett Browning, who wrote "How do I Love Thee / Let me count the Ways" and inspired this column, I paraphrase that into "How have I been Faked Out Let me count the ways". I never intended this column to become a regular feature, But I keep finding ways to get Faked out while repairing equipment. Learn from me, so it doesn't happen to you. Today's Lovely poem of Open Verse involves an Impressive Kenwood DP-R3070 CD Changer. This Beast tried to fake me out of my shoes (or other articles of clothing) and I didnt like it One Little Bit. T h e Handsome owner brought the player in with its remote and a disc to show how it would skip after playing for a while. Instead of using the owners disc, I put on some of my own Marvy Johnny Mathis discs and listened to his Dreamy voice while waiting for the trouble to show. I Do So LOVE Johnny Mathis! Sure enough, after 2:37 into the tune, the player skipped back to the beginning of the song. That wasnt so bad, because The Twelfth of Never is one of my favorites and I listened to it till my Heart Palpitated. Since, the trouble repeated at the same time in the song - and the disc wasnt scratched - I found that the traverse was hanging up along the Slide Rod. A drop of oil took care of that and allowed me to go and be faked out which is the Sad Story of this little tale of Woe. I wanted to select my favorite Mathis melodies to listen to during the Air Check because it makes This Heart of Mine so Gay (What Else?), so I slipped the remote into my Purse - err I mean Pocket while I worked nearby. I pointed the remote at the player so that I could enjoy Warm and Willing and imagine my horror when Nothing Happened. Oh Yes - I pointed and Squeezed and pointed some more and Pushed the buttons, but to no avail. The remote just wouldnt do Anything ! Oh Dear - Oh Dear. My Easy job has just gotten Hard. Where In the world am I going to get a schematic to trace the remote control circuitry of a Kenwood? I swished over to the player and had to push the Change button with my own little finger and Johnny answered when Its not for me to say came out of the speaker. He also told me my course of action when I heard Chances Are I Concentrate on You. That caused me to sing Where do I begin in answer to Johnny. We had a Lovely dialogue, just The Two of Us. He caused me to give The Look of Love to the Printed Circuit Board on the Front of the Player - The PCB that contains the Remote Photoreceptor - and When I did, everything became Wonderful, Wonderful because the solution did Come to Me.

I sashayed over to the computer and brought up the Owners Manual on the Inter-Net. The manual actually contained TWO models in the same book: the DP-R3070 and the DP-R4070. As I read, I came across something that was Heavenly. The manual showed the Buttons, Controls, Features, and Display on the cabinet and also The Remote Receiver For Model DP-R4070 ONLY! Oh, you cant imagine my Feelings when I read that sentence. It made me Positively Misty! The DP-R3070 is NOT Equipped with a Remote Sensor!! I was just So Elated that you could Fly me to the Moon. I even Dismounted that PCB so that I could examine it and confirm that there is NO IR Receiver present. I could see the Pads where the receiver Would be on The Other Model but there sure was No Receiver on This model. Well, I have to say that Its DeLovely, because Im done right Now. Just a few Odds & Ends to finish up and I can call that Someone to Take me Home. I put A Certain Smile on my face when I gave the customer the good news and wondered why they brought in a remote for a model that is not equipped with one. Seems that this CD Player is part of a Stereo System and the remote operates the Receiver, and Cassette, and if the owner would have chosen the DP-R4070, it would have worked the CD also - But he didnt. I listened to the Devine Johnny While waiting for the owner to arrive, and it made me feel so Warm and Tender. And so to answer the question in the First Stanza: How have I been Faked Out? "I've been Faked Out to the Depths of the Ocean, and to the Heights of the Sky".

SEARCHING For.
SUSAN (?)
Not Bloody Likely!!!! If I was searching for Susan, and my Wife Shelia found out about it, I would be doing some searching for Other items - Probably a couple of body parts of which I have developed a great fondness. What Im talking about is Searching in a computer sense. Recently, we have received some requests for articles which have appeared in The Speaker. You know the feeling, You remember reading about Something - Somewhere - but you just cant lay your hand on it. Maybe it is a tip about a Fix on a Samsung, or that warning about copy machine memories - Something that you would like to give a second look. WELL, THERES GOOD NEWS TONIGHT! To quote Fred Allen Your nesdaOHIO Newsletter has its archives online at www.nesda-ohio.com , Every Article that we have ever printed is there - and Im going to tell you how to find whatever you want in those archives. First thing that you do when you arrive at the nesdaOHIO Home-Page is to click on The Speaker in the Left Sidebar Navigation Panel. Note that your computer screen might look a bit different from this picture, depending on how you have your Monitors resolution set. This Computer Illiterates is set to 800X600. (Please dont tell him to change it The Computer Illiterate does not like Change)
Scroll Down to Newsletter Archive
This will whisk you away to the Archive Page where you can read any months issue with the touch of your mouse. But the Biggest benefit is when you click Index By Topic !
GreatGawdAmighty! You click that Index by Topic and you are presented with an alphabetized list of every article ever printed within these pages. Each entry on that list is a HyperLink to that specific story so that you can read it - or print it. Now, there is no Search Box on that page, but that list IS searchable.
Clicking Speaker in that sidebar will take you to the next page where you have a choice of reading the current issue of The Speaker or selecting the Archives. If that archive selection is not shown, you will have to use the scroll bar along the right edge of your screen and scroll down below the list of our Sponsors to where it says Newsletter Archive.
