INTRODUCTION

GO DIGITAL AND ESCAPE THE LIMITATIONS OF YOUR IN-CAR AUDIO
MODERN DIGITAL MUSIC IS ABOUT FREEDOM
Up until the last few years, music on-the-go was limited to what you could, quite literally, carry. We wouldnt have considered lling our cars with our entire music collections, so instead wed select a few CDs (or even cassettes) and hope for the best. Now you can transport every song you own on something less than half the size of a CD case. This is all thanks to compressed le technology. Digital music is exible; it can be copied, altered and pasted like any other le on your PC your tracks become les and your albums become folders. The term digital music usually refers to songs that have been converted into computer-friendly formats such as AAC or MP3. Most importantly, these les are tiny; compressed so that they can be sent over the Internet. This also means that you can store around ten times more compressed les than those that arent: bringing a whole new meaning to music on-the-go.
You can convert your music from digital forms (such as CDs and Internet downloads) and analogue recordings (such as records and cassettes) into compressed audio les, using a software program. Software can be downloaded for free from the Internet, and its intuitive and easy to use. Software can improve the quality of sound and help you to organise your music too. You can revolutionise your driving audio experience by creating playlists: exploding the connes of per-album listening. Compressed music les can be recorded onto a CD or listened to on an MP3 player, such as the iPod. The digital solution to the Personal Stereo; MP3 players allow you to listen to your music directly from a built-in hard drive. Alternatively, a USB device is the ideal solution for in-car entertainment. Plug the device into your stereo and play your music. Change whats on there as little or often as you wish unless of course its got a big enough memory to hold your whole music collection!
PLAYING DIGITAL MUSIC IN YOUR CAR
STEP 1 DOWNLOAD OR COPY YOUR MUSIC TO YOUR COMPUTER
What do I use? There are lots of programs that can be used to copy your music to your computer, organise your digital library and convert your music les. Among others, iTunes and Windows Media Player can be downloaded for free online. Several Kenwood USB products are supplied with Phatnoise Media Manager software. What changes? Most importantly the size. Smaller les mean more music in one place. More music in one place means less hassle. In addition to this, your tracks will now be named les and your albums folders. Will the quality of my music change? This depends on what sample rate you use to compress each le. The lower the sample rate the lower the quality; the higher the rate the better the quality. However, the lower the sample rate the more you can store on your MP3 device, at the sacrice of some quality. The standard rate for Internet MP3s, WMAs and AACs is 128kbps. 128kbps is the recommended and most versatile sample rate, combining a compact size with high quality.

STEP 2 CONVERT YOUR MUSIC INTO COMPRESSED FILES
Why do I need to convert? The audio les on your standard CD are digital les that are uncompressed, so in order to benet from a wider music selection whilst on the move they need to be compressed. AAC (Advanced Audio Coding), MP3 (MPEG - 1 Audio Layer - 3) and WMA (Windows Media Audio) are the most common. Tracks that you download from the Internet are generally already in a compressed format, ready to move to your device.

USB STICK

STEP 3 COPY YOUR MUSIC TO YOUR USB
What USB devices are compatible? The standard solution is the USB ash memory stick, which simply stores your music ready to be played through your stereo. Alternatively, you can use a USB ash memory player or HDD (Hard Disk Drive) player for added personal listening functionality (just like a personal stereo) with a built-in display. Apple iPods can also be connected to a USB stereo using the Kenwood KCA-IP500. What is ash memory? Flash memory is a computer chip with a read-only memory that retains its data when disconnected from a power supply. What is DRM? DRM stands for Digital Rights Management, and is a copyright protection found on some les. Most USB devices and HDD players are only compatible with non-DRM les. DRM is often used to protect downloads from being copied. How does copyright affect music? Like lm, music is protected by copyright laws. Copyright laws protect the rights to performance, distribution and modication. It is illegal to copy and distribute music in any format, digital or analog, that is rights-owned by somebody else.

APPLE iPOD HDD PLAYER

How many songs can I store? The memory of each device varies and is measured in MB (megabytes) and GB (gigabytes). Take a look at the table below to see how memory approximately translates into how many tracks and albums can be stored on a device. Figures are based on a 128 kbps sample rate.
MEMORY 500MB 1GB 2GB 3GB 5GB 10GB 20GB TRACKS 5000 10,000 20,000 ALBUMS 680
1 Insert your USB device into your

computers USB socket.

2 Select Open folder to view les. 3 Copy and paste your MP3s le into the

open USB folder.

4 To remove your USB device, click
in your computers taskbar.
5 A window will appear, select your USB
device from the list and click Stop.
It is now safe to remove your device. Your music is stored and ready to play on your car stereo.
STEP 4 CONNECT YOUR USB DEVICE TO YOUR IN-CAR STEREO
Its pretty easy - remove the cover from your stereos USB socket, and plug in your USB device.
STEP 5 PLAYING YOUR MUSIC
Your music will play exactly as it does from a CD, so you can: Display artist and track/le name Skip backwards and forwards through tracks and albums/les and folders Pause playback Adjust the volume.

Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor is an efcient output transistor, used within power ampliers to convert DC current to AC.
ACDRIVE Software which compresses les on a PC, ready for use on an in-car USB player. The ACDrive features the PMM (Phatnoise Media Manager) software to access, organise, transfer, and playback digital music. The software is for use on a PC. Files can be saved from the PC to most MP3 devices, and subsequently played on an in-car USB player. AMP CONTROL To control external amps from head unit controls. AUX RCA INPUT The auxiliary RCA input enables an in-car TV or portable music player to be connected and its sound to be reproduced directly through the speakers installed in the vehicle.
BLUETOOTH H/F READY Bluetooth enables the receipt and transmission of data. Bluetooth is a short-range wireless connection used most commonly by mobile phones, PDAs and computers and allows two separate devices to coordinate information (needs optional Bluetooth unit KCA-BT100). The interface supports following functions: receiving calls, making calls, hanging up, connection state, signal strength, remaining battery, phonebook download. CD-R RW A device capable of reading both recordable and re-recordable CDs. DISPLAY OFF Display light on front of player can be switched off for night driving.
