monitor by an HDMI cable, was enough for me to question the hype surrounding HDMI. I was using good quality Monster component cables, and this no doubt had a hand in the terrific video quality. This brings us to scaling, which when used when watching the DivX files I downloaded, certainly made the onscreen images look cleaner and more detailed.They did still look a little like compressed video a fact highlighted by using a 50-inch monitor but the difference between ordinary DVD material and DivX was minimal. The player did complain a little when being used to upscale conventional DVDs. This according to Kiss was due to copy protection on commercial DVDs.This anomaly being able to upscale only DivX files or unprotected DVDs does mean that you have to test your DVDs to see if the up-scaling will work adequately or not. Apart from the slightly suspect up-scaling, and the fact that I felt that the DP-1100 was a little noisier than I expected (I could at times hear its motor whirring), it proved to be a most enjoyable DVD player to use. Video quality in general was superb, it sounded good, and its ability to play virtually every disc, makes it appealing to those who believe that a DVD player should be more than just a DVD player. Its asking price offers good value too.

o many people, a DVD player is a DVD player, is a DVD player. As long as the thing is easy to use and will play DVDs rented for the kids or in some cases those horrible copies bought on the side of the street everyone is happy. Well perhaps not everyone is happy. There will always be some people that are more discerning and thank goodness for them, for without them I would be without a job people who believe that 'good' just isn't enough. People who strive for excellence in everything they do and expect the same from the products they use and purchase. These people are more often than not quite tech savvy, have the means and ability to use technology to enhance their leisure time, and terms such as Ogg Vorbis, DivX and Nero mean something to them. This brings us to the Kiss DP-1100 DVD player; a player that can play discs with Ogg Vorbis and DivX files written to them. Naturally, the DP-1100 has the capability to play just about every other kind of file that one could sanely expect a DVD player to. It was also equipped with a wide array of outputs, from SCART to component video on the video side, to stereo analogue and digital outputs on the audio side. The only output that the DP-1100 wasn't equipped with, was an HDMI/DVI output, but making up for this was the fact that the player could up-scale from standard definition video to high definition 720p or 1080i (more on this a little later). By definition this meant that the DP-1100 was equipped with progressive video out and its firmware was upgradeable via a download from the Kiss website. Another plus point in the DP-1100's favour, particularly for those with smaller rooms, was the simple fact that at roughly the size of a stack of A4 sheets of paper, it would fit into spaces that other DVD players wouldn't. Prior to my review of the DP-1100 beginning, I downloaded some DivX samples from the official DivX website, and wrote these samples to disc. I also downloaded the latest firmware for the player, but on checking which firmware the player was using, found out that it already had the latest version. This meant that I didn't get to update the player, but the download itself was relatively quick and easy. lowest button count I've ever seen.There were in fact only two buttons on the front panel of the player. One for play/pause, and the other for stop/eject. This together with a dimmable display meant that the player looked sleek and rather attractive. It also meant that if you misplace the remote, you would lose virtually all player functionality.
