Documents

The manuals included on the QMS 4060 Print System Documentation and QMS Software Utilities CD-ROMs are in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. Weve also provided the Acrobat Reader and QuickTime programs on both CD-ROMs. The CD-ROM insert provides instructions on installing them.
About Adobe Acrobat Reader
Adobe Acrobat PDF-formatted manuals give you more flexibility and convenience than do hardcopy manuals when you have to access information. Here are some of the advantages PDF-formatted manuals provide: n n n n You can store the PDF manuals in a central location for access by anyone on the network. You can view and print the manuals on Windows, Macintosh, and UNIX platforms. You can view the manuals on web browsers using the Acrobat plug-in. You can view the manuals on-screen in different formats (sideby-side or two-up, one page at a time, scrolling two-up, article flow, and zooming capability up to 800%). You can conduct full-text searches through all of the manuals. You can watch QuickTime video clips on Windows and Macintosh platforms that enhance the text and illustrations for a number of commonly performed procedures. (When installing the Reader, be sure to select the option to install QuickTime.) 1-3
You can print only the manual pages that you need. The PDF-formatted manuals have been enhanced for on-screen viewing and navigation. Throughout each manual are numerous hotlinks to cross-reference points. The table of contents and the index are fully hotlinked to their respective page references, and all World Wide Web addresses are linked to their respective home pages.
We hope you enjoy using the Acrobat software to access the information in your manuals. Theyll never become dog-eared and yellowed or collect dust on some forgotten shelf with quick on-line access. Your PDF-formatted manuals will empower you to take full advantage of all the capabilities of your printer.
Using Adobe Acrobat Reader
When you use Acrobat to view your manuals, keep the following tips in mind for using some of the navigation features built into Acrobat and your manuals. n You may view the document in three different styles: page only, with bookmarks, or with thumbnails. Try each to see which you like best. Viewing with bookmarks will enable you to use a quick table of contents to move around the document. The toolbar also gives you quick access to page navigation features. For example, you may click a button to advance (>) or reverse (<) one page, go to the start (|<) or end (>|) of the document, or use the history button (<<) to go to the previous pages you viewed. There are other buttons in the toolbar to change view or magnification of the document. As you browse through the document the open hand tool will sometimes turn into a pointing hand. You have discovered an embedded link in the manual. You will find these links in the table of contents, index, www addresses, and cross references. Click on the link to jump to a new location. You may discover a movie camera icon on Windows and Macintosh platforms. Click the icon to play a QuickTime video clip of the procedure described in the text. QMS 4060 Print System Getting Started
Check with your QMS vendor for current availability of optional interfaces. See appendix A, QMS Customer Support, for locations and telephone numbers. Holds approximately 500 sheets of Letter/A4 to 11''x17''/A3 paper and Statement, B4 (ISO), B5 (ISO). Holds approximately 2000 sheets of Letter or A4 paper.
Advanced Document Handling Capabilities
Your printer offers automatic collation of a complete document, highvolume duplexing, printer-based page layout (n-up and booklet printing), sessions, and background printing. Sessions allows multiple documents, including documents from different emulations to be combined in one large document.
User BenefitAdvanced document handling, such as automatic collation for complete document processing increases workflow and reduces user intervention; n-up and background printing offer flexible page formatting to allow for short in-house production runs.
Convenient Control Panel Operation
The user-friendly control panel allows you to configure your printer. The printer uses the control panel to communicate with you by providing messages about its status, including any conditions that require your attention. These messages can be displayed in a user-selectable language (English, French, German, or Spanish). See chapter 6, Control Panel, in this manual for complete information on using the control panel.
Four Resident Emulations
Your printer supports printing in HP PCL 5e, HP-GL, Lineprinter, and PostScript emulations. User BenefitMost applications can print directly to the printer.
HP PCL 5e Emulation
The printer emulates the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 5Si with the same fonts and symbol sets. This printer is emulated at 300x300 dpi (bitmap and scalable fonts) and 600x600 dpi (scalable fonts only).
Energy Star Compliance
The QMS 4060 Print System (base model) is compliant with US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Energy Star regulations. After a specified length of inactivity, the printer changes to a lowpower state (the engine remains on, but the fuser turns off). When a print job is received, the printer returns to normal power within 90 seconds.
User BenefitThe EPA Energy Star Computers program promotes the use of energy-efficient personal computers, monitors, and printers and the reduction of air pollution caused by power generation. Introduction 1-19
Toner Savings
The Conserve Toner option allows you to increase the life of the printers toner. You can set Conserve Toner on a per-job basis or for all print jobs. In addition the printer can actually recycle the waste toner through the machine again for increased toner life. User BenefitA choice of printing modes allows you to lower printing costs by reducing the amount of toner on the printed page when printing draft copies of documents and increase the life of your toner and cost of consumables.
QMS CrownAdmin Utility Software
Provided in CrownAdmin for Macintosh, Windows, SunOS, Solaris, HP-UX, and AIX formats, the QMS CrownAdmin utility software is a point-and-click tool that allows you to easily configure QMS printers and perform network operations on printers connected to Ethernet or Token-Ring networks. Note: When a font SIMM is installed, the following appears in the Options section of the start-up page even though you have only one installed: %cartridge2% %cartridge%. If the start-up page prints with all the start-up page information, and the print quality is good, go to chapter 3, Connecting to a PC, chapter 4, Connecting to an Ethernet Network, or to chapter 5, Connecting to a Macintosh, of this manual, depending on your computer platform. If a start-up page does not print, see chapter 9, Troubleshooting Printer Problems, of the Operation guide for more information on printing a start-up page.
Installing Options
Enabling/Disabling the Start-up Page
A start-up page automatically prints when you turn on your print system. However, you can save time, paper, and toner by disabling the start-up page. If you need the information included on the start-up page after you have disabled the page, then you must enable the start-up page and turn the printer off and then on again. Two ways to disable (or enable) the start-up page are 1 Use the printer control panel (Administration/Startup Options/Do Start Page menu). See Enabling/Disabling the Start-up Page in chapter 4, Printer Configuration, of the Reference guide for complete information. 2 Use CrownAdmin to access either remote console or configuration buttons or use the local console port to access the configuration menu.
All of the options for your printer are documented in the Options manual included on the documentation CD-ROM. If you ordered a largecapacity input feeder (LCIF) and/or a large capacity output stacker (LCOS), see appendix C, Installing Options, in this manual for installation procedures.

Connecting to a PC
n n n n n Connecting to a PC Making a Parallel Connection Making the Connection PC Printing Software Printing from the PC
This chapter explains what an interface is, and describes how to connect your printer to a PC via the parallel port.
To connect to a PC you must do the following: Turn the power off on both the printer and the PC. Connect the printer to the PC. n If youre connecting your PC to a network Connect the printer to the network as described in chapter 4, Connecting to an Ethernet Network and in your PC documentation. Note: The Ethernet port is standard on your printers controller board. If youve purchased an optional network interface for your printer, see chapter 3, Optional Interfaces of the Options guide for installation instructions. n If youre connecting your PC via an optional interface, see chapter 3, Optional Interfaces in the Options manual. Install a printer driver. See PC Printing Software. 5 3-2 Now youre ready to print. QMS 4060 Print System Getting Started
Making a Parallel Connection
If you have a new PC and it has not been connected yet, before connecting the printer to the PC, you should follow the manufacturers instructions for setting up the PC and installing (if necessary) any operating system software, such as DOS and/or Windows.
What You Need for a Parallel Interface
Interface cables are not included with your printer. If youre replacing a printer, you may already have the necessary cables. If not, youll need to purchase the cables from your QMS vendor or a local computer store. To connect your printer to a single PC, you need a parallel cable with a 36-pin male and a 25-pin male connector. Note: See the Cable Pinouts section of appendix B, in the Reference guide, for cable pinout information.
How to Choose a Parallel Cable
Your printer supports both Centronics parallel, and IEEE 1284 bidirectional parallel communication. The type of parallel cable you use depends on the type of parallel communication your computer supports (check your computer users guide if youre unsure). n If your computer supports IEEE 1284 bidirectional parallel communication, you need an IEEE 1284 bidirectional parallel cable (IEEE 1284 is indicated on the cable). This cable must be 6.5 feet/2 meters or less in length. If your computer supports only Centronics parallel unidirectional communication, you may use either a Centronics parallel cable (unmarked on cable) or an IEEE 1284 bidirectional parallel cable (IEEE 1284 is indicated on the cable). However, we recommend an IEEE 1284 cable. The IEEE 1284 cable must be 6.5 feet/2 meters or less in length while the Centronics cable may be longer.
Aldus Persuasion
This application wont print EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) images if the PostScript driver isnt PSCRIPT.DRV.
CorelDRAW
This application provides a feature to control whether a PostScript driver is actually treated as a PostScript driver or not. In the CORELPRN.INI file under the [PSDRIVERS] section, specify which driver by either of the following statements: QMSPS=1 (PostScript driver) QMSPS=0 (Non-PostScript driver)
Microsoft Excel
If your using this application with color cell backgrounds in a sparse dot pattern, the background may not always print in all resolutions and/or orientations. Interference between the bit pattern and the PostScript halftoning for color causes this inconsistency. Change the resolution to one that does work for the background and use a darker shade of back for the pattern color, or enable the All Colors to Black option from within the Excel Images dialog box.
Other Applications
The scaling factor set in the driver is independent of any scaling factor set in an application. While the applications scaling factor is likely to
Printing from the PC
affect the size and placement of image elements, the driver scaling factor simply scales the resultant image from the center of the page.
QuarkXPress
Follow this procedure to install the PDF: Note: All PDFs are copied into a PDF subdirectory during the QMS Level 2 Windows Driver installation process. After you install the QMS driver for Windows, close the QuarkXPress application on your PC. Copy the QuarkXPress PDF from its installation directory to the QuarkXPress directory on your PC. Restart QuarkXPress. Check the Page Setup menu to verify that your printer is in the list of available printers. See your QuarkXPress documentation for detailed information on installing PDFs.
You're now ready to print from your PC. From this point, you'll probably perform most printing tasks from your application. For specific information, check the printing section in your application documentation. For information on print media types and sizes, see chapter 2, Print Media in the Reference guide.
Now that youve connected your printer to a PC, continue with chapter 6, Control Panel to learn about the printers control panel keys, indicators, and message window.

FAQ numbers are subject to change, so yo may want to obtain a directory of Q-FAX documents before requesting a specific document.
Identifying Hard Disks
The hard disks are identified by their device numbers. The internal hard disk attached has a device number of DSK7. If optional external hard disks are attached to the printer, their device numbers can range from DSK0 to DSK6. (DSK5 which translates to SCSI ID 5 is reserved for the scanner). Device numbers of external disks can be set on the back of the hard disk by the installer.
v Caution: If you connect to this printer an external hard disk you previously used with an earlier QMS Crown printer (1660E, QMS 1725E, QMS 2025, or QMS 3225), this QMS 4060 Print System software release will automatically reorganize the files on the hard disk when the printer is turned back on again. (The printer release number is listed on both the start-up and the status page.) Once this reorganization is done, the files on the hard disk can no longer be accessed if the hard disk is reattached to an earlier QMS Crown printer.
This reorganization process takes time. If, when you first turn the printer on after attaching a previously used hard disk, it does not come on line immediately, be patient. Interrupting the reorganization process could cause all files on the hard disk to be lost.
Turning on an External Hard Disk
For the printer to recognize one or more external hard disks, each hard disk must be turned on before you turn on the printer. If the printer recognizes the disk(s) and the start-up page is enabled, check to ensure that DISK ONLINE prints on that page. If the start-up page is not enabled, print a status page and check to see if DISK ONLINE prints on that page. (See chapter 4, Printer Configuration, of the Reference manual, for information on how to print a status page.) If DISK ONLINE does not print, see the Operation guide, chapter 9, the Internal Hard Disk Problems section, for more information. Properly installed disks will also appear in the Options section, of the start-up page (if its enabled) and on the status page as %%diskx% (where x is a 7 for an internal IDE hard disk and 0 - 6 (SCSI ID 5 is reserved for the scanner) for any external SCSI hard disks, depending on the SCSI ID set on the back of the hard disk.
Configuring Hard Disks
To configure the hard disk(s) you may need to either Enable Disk Swap or increase the Disk Cache size, dependent on your printers memory. After the Administration/Memory/Enable Disk Swap or Administration/ Memory/Disk Cache menu settings are reconfigured and the printer is restarted, you need to print a status page to check that the Disk Cache size is increased. (Notice that VM remaining memory is also increased.)
Using the Disk Operations Menu
Using Remote Console
See Formatting a Hard Disk in the Disk Operation Commands section of chapter 6, Local and Remote Console, of the Operations manual for instructions on formatting a hard disk using a remote console.
Note: You cannot back up data to an internal or external hard disk.
Attach Jaz or Zip drive to which youll be backing up data to the printers SCSI port or SCSI chain. Then access the Administration/ Disk Operations menu, and then press the control panel keys in the order shown in the following table. The printer responds by displaying a status message in the message window (DSK refers to the device, and # is the device number).
Note: You may need to press the Next key one or more times to advance through the list of selections or options.
Press this key. Next Select Next or Previous Select Next (optional) to. Advance to the Disk Operations/ Backup Hard Disk menu Access the Backup Hard Disk/Dsk#: menu. Access the DSK#x/Incremental menu. DSK#x INCREMENTAL
Press this key. Select to. and the message window reads.
Begin the backup process. The printer COPYING DATA creates a Backup directory on the Jaz or Zip drive to which youre backing data up and stores the data in that directory.
If the drive has not already been formatted, the printer automatically formats it. If the drive already has a Backup directory, the new backed up data overwrites the data in that directory.
If the backup requires more than one INSERT MEDIA x Jaz or Zip drive, the message display (x is the disk number) prompts you. Be sure to number the drives since the restore process requires you to use them in the proper sequence. Youre prompted when the backup process has finished. Menu (several times) Online Exit from the configuration menu. BACKUP COMPLETE CONFIGURATION ADMINISTRATION IDLE
Put the printer back on line.
The following error messages may appear while you are using the Disk Operations menu:

Softloadable Emulations
Optional emulations, such as ImageServer, LN03 Plus, QUIC II, CGM, QFORM, and XES are available as PostScript files on floppy disks for your PC.Contact QMS for the available optional emulations. This section describes how to download an optional emulation to the printers hard disk. See your emulation documentation on the latest and more complete information on downloading and configuring optional emulations. Note: QMS recommends that you have at least 1 MB of memory above the base configuration and that you add that memory to the K Mem Emulation memory client. This will ensure that the printer will be able to run the emulation without slowing down performance. Some optional emulations (LN03 Plus, QUIC II, and ImageServer) are equipped with their own removal files. To remove an emulation (for example, QUIC II emulation) from a printer, send its removal file (for example, quic2del.ps) to the printer via serial/parallel/network interface. The procedure for downloading an emulation or emulation removal file via the serial/parallel/network interface is the same as downloading the emulation. Note: As soon as the removal file is sent, the printer will generate a message to indicate the removal of the emulation. Also, the printer will then perform a self-reboot to refresh the print system. However, if the emulation does not have a removal file, the emulation can be removed by reformatting the hard disk of the printer from the following menu option: (Administration/Disk Operations/Format Disk).
ProcedurePC UsersParallel and Serial
Use the following procedure to update the system software in system memory whether downloading through the parallel or serial port.
Decompressing the System Software
Before the printer system software can be downloaded, it must be decompressed on your PCs hard disk. Switch to an MS-DOS prompt. Create a new directory on your PC. Change to this directory. Insert the printer system software disk in your PCs 3.5" disk drive. Type x:pkunzip x:system where x is the name of the disk drive in which you inserted the system software disk. Follow the prompts.

Menu Purpose Choices Default Note Copier Menu/Copy Mode/Scale Size% Use this to change the scale value from the current value in the positive or negative direction. 50-200% dpi range 100 dpi Original of source will be printed at the upper left of the page. The bottom of the page may be cropped. If you want to scale the copy, you must set the Scale Size% first and then press the Copy key. Press the Online key only after copying has finished. Pressing Online before pressing Copy does not save the scaling value.
Menu Purpose Choices Copier Menu/Copy Mode/Custom Config/Scan Resolution Use this menu to specify what resolution the scanner should use for custom scan settings. 100, 150, 200, or 300 dpi Choose a scan resolution that is at most half of the printer resolution being used. The higher the scan resolution, the more detailed the copy output (as long as the printer resolution being used is double the scan resolution). Also, a higher scan resolution increases copying time, because of the increased amount of data that must be scanned and sent to the printer for processing. (Each time the scan resolution is doubled, the amount of information that is scanned and printed is quadrupled.) Default Note 200 dpi In order to change the default scan resolution, you must choose the Custom Gray option in the Copier/Copy Mode/ Select Mode menu.
Halftone Adjust/Brightness
Menu Purpose Copier Menu/Copy Mode/Custom Config/Halftone Adjust/ Brightness Allows you to adjust the brightness of halftone mode scans. This setting is enabled by the Select Mode/Halftone B/W menu. 15 brightness settings; each setting makes an incremental brightness change of about 2%. DMoving the setting in this direction decreases brightness. It darkens the overall image making light and dark areas appear darker. LMoving the setting in this direction increases brightness. It lightens the overall image making light and dark areas appear lighter. Default Notes The middle setting Use the Previous key to move the message-window cursor from the center towards the left to a darker (less bright) D setting or use the Next key to move the cursor towards the right to a lighter (brighter) setting L. Each increment of change in the brightness setting is significant in output quality. Therefore, we recommend that you change the setting by only one level, print out a test copy, and then determine if further modification is necessary.
Menu Purpose Choices Notes Copier Menu/Copy Mode/Custom Config/GrayScale Adjust Allows you to specify whether gamma correction is used. None and Photographic NoneIf this is selected, then data from scanner is directly printed. This provides better quality for copying photocopies of text and line art. PhotographicThis option provides a gamma table adjustment for the image. This should be used if you are copying photographs.
Binary Adjust/Threshold
Menu Purpose Choices Notes Copier Menu/Copy Mode/Custom Config/Binary Adjust/ Threshold Allows you to adjust the detection point for black vs. white in Binary B/W mode. There are 15 levels of threshold available. Each level changes the threshold slightly. Use the Previous key to move the message-window cursor from the center (the default position) towards the left to a D Darker (less bright) setting, or use the Next key to move the cursor towards the right to a Lighter L (brighter) setting. Increasing the threshold makes light and dark areas in the halftone appear lighter, while decreasing the threshold makes light and dark areas appear darker. Each increment of change is significant in output quality. Therefore, we recommend that you change the setting by only one level, print out a test copy, and then determine if further modification to the contrast is necessary.
