Paper that has been removed from its wrapper but not loaded in the machine
should be stored in a sealed plastic bag in a cool, dark place.
Use only toner that has been manufactured specifically for this machine. Never use other types of toner. Keep all supplies out of the reach of children.
CAUTION Be careful not to spill toner inside the machine or get toner on your clothes or hands. If your hands become soiled with toner, immediately wash them with soap and water.
Transporting the Machine
The area around the Fusing Unit is extremely hot. In order to reduce the risk of burns, do not touch any area other than those indicated in the manual. Be especially careful not to touch parts marked with warning labels, and their surrounding areas.

Turning the Machine On/Off and the Initial Mode
To turn on the machine:
Press the | (on) side of the Power Switch.
To turn off the machine:
Press the 2 (off) side of the Power Switch.
Note Do not turn off the machine while a copy cycle is being performed, as a paper misfeed will result. Before attempting to turn off the machine, always be sure that the current copy cycle has been completed. Turning off the machine will initialize all settings except those for previously programmed jobs and for the Utility mode. The machine automatically enters the Energy Save mode 15 min after the last operation is performed. The time until the machine enters Energy Save mode can be specified from the Utility mode. For details, refer to Specifying the Setting for ENERGY SAVE MODE on page 5-5 in the chapter Using the Utility Mode. When the Machine is Turned On When the machine is turned on, the [Start] key indicator lights up in orange to indicate that the machine is ready to begin copying. At this time, the machine can be set for the Auto Copy Start function by loading a document into the Auto Document Feeder or by placing a document on the Original Glass, and pressing the [Start] key. Pressing the [Start] key at this time will not immediately start the copy cycle. You will have to wait for less than 25 seconds (at an ambient temperature of 73.4F).
Tip Auto tray switching can be disabled. For details, refer to Setting Up the Paper Sources on page 5-12.

Precautions for Loading Paper
Be sure to observe the paper specifications (paper type, paper size, and capacity) for each tray, otherwise a paper misfeed could result. When paper is loaded into the Bypass Tray, a message appears, indicating that the paper size be specified. Specify the size and type of paper that is loaded. Paper loaded into the Bypass Tray is given priority during feeding. The size of FLS is preset to 13 8-1/4. To change the FLS size, contact a service representative.
3.7 Copy Paper Unsuitable Paper
The following types of paper should not be used, otherwise decreased print quality, paper misfeeds or damage to the machine may occur.
Overhead projector transparencies that have already been fed through the machine Even if the transparency is still blank, do not reuse it. Paper that has been printed on by a heat-transfer printer or an inkjet printer Paper that is either extremely thick or extremely thin Folded, curled, wrinkled, or torn paper Paper that has been left unwrapped for a long period of time Damp paper Perforated paper or paper with punched holes Extremely smooth or extremely rough paper, or paper with an uneven surface Paper that has been treated, such as carbon-backed, heat-sensitive or pressure-sensitive paper Paper that has been decorated with foil or embossing Paper of a non-standard shape (not rectangular) Paper that is bound with glue, staples or paper clips Paper with labels attached Paper with ribbons, hooks, buttons, etc. attached Curled or wrinkled paper Art paper, coated paper or inkjet printer paper
7 Press the [Start] key to start the copy cycle.
3.8 Loading Originals Positioning Books
When copying an open book or magazine, position the original as detailed below.
4 Gently lower the Auto Document Feeder or Original Cover.
Note While scanning a thick book or other three-dimensional object with the Auto Document Feeder or Original Cover open, do not look directly at the bright light that may shine through the Original Glass. Although the light that shines through the Original Glass is bright, it is not a laser beam and, therefore, is not as dangerous.
5 Specify the desired copy settings.
Note Do not place books weighing more than 6-1/2 lb on the Original Glass. In addition, do not press down extremely hard on the original, otherwise the machine may be damaged.

4.1 Making a Basic Copy

4.3 Specifying the Zoom Ratio
By specifying a zoom ratio, the copy can be enlarged or reduced. Zoom Ratio Settings
Zoom Ratio Settings Fixed ratios Description The following optimum zoom ratios are available for making copies from commonly used original sizes to standard paper sizes. 0.50 0.64 (LT HL) 0.78 (LG LT) 1.29 (HL LT) 1.54 (HL LG) 2.00 Pressing the [M] or [L] key increases or decreases the zoom ratio in 0.01 increments. The ratio can range from 0.50 to 2.00. This setting makes a copy the same size as the original ( 1.00).

4.4 Adjusting the Image Density
The image density setting can be adjusted in two broad modes, Text and Photo. Image Density Setting
Text mode: The image density can be adjusted either automatically (Auto) or manually in nine steps.
The image density is adjusted automatically according to the original from which a copy is to be made. Manual image density adjustment: The image density can be adjusted to one of nine levels. To reduce bleed-throughs when copying newspapers and magazines, press the [ ] key to select a lighter setting. To reproduce faint colors in brighter parts of the image, press the [ ] key to select a darker setting. Selecting a darker setting could result in a background image being reproduced on the copy, while selecting a lighter setting could make the copy image itself too light: Select the appropriate level according to your original.
Photo mode: Select Photo when making a copy from an original having large halftone images, such as photos.
Setting the Image Density
2 Press the [Auto/Photo] key on the
control panel to select the desired mode.
Each press of the [Auto/Photo] key changes the setting as shown at the right. If Text mode is selected, TEXT is displayed. If the Auto setting is selected, [A] is displayed. If Photo mode is selected, PHOTO is displayed.
Note In the Photo mode, the Auto setting cannot be selected.

4.5 Making 2in1 Copies
Two sheets of single-sided documents can be copied onto one double-sided sheet.

Used Drum Cartridges In order to prevent the used Drum Cartridge from dirtying anything, keep it in the box.
Dispose of the used Drum Cartridge according to your local regulations.
Replacing the Drum Cartridge
Note When separating the Toner Cartridge from the Drum Cartridge, do not tilt the cartridge, otherwise toner may spill. Do not touch the PC drum under the flap of the Drum Cartridge, otherwise decreased image quality may result.
6.3 When the Message D/C LIFE Appears Do not touch any metal parts of the Drum Cartridge or Toner Cartridge, otherwise the units may be damaged by static electricity.
5 Align the blue parts of the new
Drum Cartridge and the Toner Cartridge, and then attach them together.
6 Align the tab on the Imaging
7 Close the Front Cover.

If the message shown below appears during printing and the machine stops operating, a paper misfeed has occurred in a paper tray. Follow the procedure described below to clear the misfed paper.

CLOSE FRONT COVER DOCUMENT COVER OPEN The Auto Document Feeder is lifted up (while a document is loaded into it). Securely close the Auto Document Feeder or remove the document from the Auto Document Feeder. Securely close the Document Feeder Cover.
CLOSE DOCUMENT COVER DOC.FEED COVER OPEN The Document Feeder Cover is open.
CLOSE DOC.FEED COVER MEMORY FULL The size of the data for the scanned document has exceeded the capacity of the memory. Some problem occurred in the machine. Press the [Panel Reset] key, or turn the machine off, then on again. (The scanned data should be cleared from the memory.) Turn the machine off, then on again. If the error is still displayed, contact your service representative. Securely close the Fuser Cover.

FUSER COVER OPEN
The Fuser Cover of the main unit is open or not securely closed.
CLOSE FUSER COVER PAPER JAM A paper misfeed occurred. All misfed paper was not removed from the main unit. OPEN FRONT COVER The Fuser Cover of the main unit is open or not securely closed. INCORRECT T/C TYPE Incorrect type of toner cartridge is installed. Toner cartridge is not installed. CHANGE T/C 1 TEXT 1.00 [A] #XXX: EMPTY (While specifying copy settings) The selected paper tray has run out of paper. # indicates the paper tray, and XXX indicates the paper size. Close the Fuser Cover, then open and close the Front Cover. Install the correct type of toner cartridge. (p. 6-5) Install the toner cartridge. (p. 6-6) Either load paper of the specified size into the specified paper tray, or press the [Paper] key and select a different paper size. Perform the misfeed-clearing procedure. (p. 6-16)
The machine does not operate when it is turned on.
The power cord is left unplugged. The rooms circuit breaker is open.
* If the problem is not corrected even after the operations described are performed, turn off the machine, unplug its power cord, and then contact the service representative.

Setting Up PC Scanning
If the enclosed TWAIN Driver is installed on the computer, this copier can be used for to scan documents to a PC. The following software and hardware system environment is required for PC scanning.
OS: Windows 98 SE, Windows Me, Windows 2000, or Windows XP TWAIN-compatible image-processing software (such as, Adobe Photoshop) USB V.1.1 (or later version)
Connecting to the USB Port
Important! Be sure to use a shielded USB cable. Use of an unshielded cable may result in radio interference.
1 Make sure that the copier and the computer to be connected to the
copier are turned OFF.
2 Connect one end of the USB cable to the USB port of the copier.

This completes the connection.
Note USB1.1 is only supported on Windows 98 SE, Windows Me, Windows 2000, and Windows XP.
Installing the TWAIN Driver
This section describes the procedure for installing the TWAIN driver. The printer driver can be installed by using Plug and Play.
Installing the TWAIN Driver Using Plug and Play
Installing the TWAIN Driver Using Plug and Play Under Windows XP
1 With Windows running, insert the CD-ROM into your computers CDROM drive.
2 Turn on the copier. 3 When the copier is ready, connect it to the computer with the USB cable.
The Found New Hardware Wizard dialog box appears.
4 Select Install from a list or specific location [Advanced], and then
click [Next].
5 Select Include this location in the search: under Search for the
best driver in these locations., and then click [Browse].
6 Browse to Driver\(language)\WinXP on the CD-ROM, and then click
Tip Select the language you prefer. For example, if you prefer English, browse to: Driver\English\WinXP
7 Click [Next].
The following dialog appears, click [Continue Anyway].
8 The Completing the Found New Hardware Wizard dialog box appears.
Click [Finish].
9 The Found New Hardware Wizard dialog box appears again.
Repeat steps 4 through 7.
Note This completes the installation of the TWAIN driver.

4 Select Search for a suitable driver for my device (recommended)
in the Install Hardware Device Drivers dialog box, and then click [Next]. The Locate Driver Files dialog box appears.
5 Select Specify a location, and click [Next]. 6 Click [Browse.] on the next dialog box, browse to
Driver\(language)\Win2000 on the CD-ROM, and then click [OK].
Tip Select the language you prefer. For example, if you prefer English, browse to: Driver\English\Win2000
7 Click [OK], and follow the instructions that appear on the screen until
the Completing the Found New Hardware Wizard dialog box appears.
8 The Found New Hardware Wizard dialog box appears again.

The Add New Hardware Wizard dialog box appears.
4 Click [Next], and then select Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended) on the next dialog box.
Click [Next] again.
5 Select [Specify a location], and then click [Browse]. 6 Browse to Driver\(language)\Win9x on the CD-ROM, and then click
Tip Select the language you prefer. For example, if you prefer English, browse to: Driver\English\Win9x
7 Click [Next], and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen
until you can click [Finish].
8 The Add New Hardware Wizard dialog box appears again.
Note Repeat steps 4 through 7 until the installation is completely finished. This completes the installation of the TWAIN driver.
Using the Auto Document Feeder
Note The Auto Document Feeder (ADF) cannot be used when True Color or Gray (dpi) is selected for Scan Type.
1 Select the PC software program (Imaging, Photoshop, etc.). This procedure uses Microsoft Imaging as an example.
2 Click [File]. 3 Click [Select Device.]. 4 Choose Minolta Di1610 or Minolta Di1610f from the dialog box,
then click [OK].
5 Click [Acquire Image.], then adjust any settings necessary.
See Common Settings on page 5-1.
6 Place the document face up
on the Auto Document Feeder (ADF).
7 Click [Scan] to begin scanning.
4.2 Using the Original Glass
2 Click [File]. 3 Click [Select Device]. 4 Choose Minolta Di1610 or Minolta Di1610f from the dialog box,

Original Size:
Select the Original Size from the pull-down list to match the size of document to be scanned.
Scan Type: The Scan Type pull-down list contain four options.
G G G G
B/W: Suitable for most text documents. Photo: Suitable for photographs. Gray: Suitable for scanning black & white photographs and text documents. True Color: Suitable for very detailed color images.
Resolution: The Resolution pull-down list contain three options that can be used for different purposes.
150dpi 150dpi: Normal resolution for text documents containing standard sized text. 300dpi 300dpi: Higher resolution for text documents containing small characters or fine print, such as a newspaper article. This is default setting. 600dpi 600dpi: Highest resolution for scanning photographs and other images.
Manual Options
To enter the enhanced settings, select Manual in the Scanning mode.

Sharp:
This function is used to sharpen the image or blur it for effect.
Curves: This function is used to set the gamma of the image. This function will allow you to brighten or darken the overview of the image without changing the original resolution. There are three input controls available.

Level: This function is used to set the gamma value, increase shadow and highlight areas, enhance shadow values and reduce highlight values.
Color Balance: This function is used to fine-tune the RGB values in shadows, midtones, and highlights areas. There are three setting options.
Cyan-Red Magenta-Green Yellow-Blue
Hue/Saturation: This function is used to set hue and saturation as well as the lightness of the image. Hue can be set within the range -180 to 180. Saturation can be used to adjust the freshness of colors by setting the range from -100 to 100. Lightness can be set from -100 to 100.
Original Document Jam
Message on the Control Panel:
Cause A paper misfeed occurred in the Auto Document Feeder. All misfed paper was not removed from the Auto Document Feeder.
Remedy Open the Document Feeder Cover and the Auto Document Feeder, and then remove the misfed paper.
To clear a misfeed in the Auto Document Feeder
1 Remove the original document from the Document Feed Tray.
2 Open the Document Feeder
Cover and gently remove the misfed paper.
3 Open the Auto Document
Feeder and gently remove the misfed paper.
4 Close the Document Feeder
Cover, then load the document removed in step 1 into the Auto Document Feeder again.
Error Message Memory Full Message on the Control Panel:
Cause There is not enough memory.
Remedy Press any key from Control Panel of the copier.
Communication Error Message on the PC screen:
Cause PC or copier system crash during communication. USB cable does not connect properly during communication.
Remedy 1. Turn the copier OFF, then check if the USB cable is connected properly or not. 2. After checking the USB cable carefully, turn the copier ON again. 3. If you still cannot fix the problem, call your service representative.
Scanner Busy Message on the PC screen:
Cause If TWAIN scanning and copy jobs are being performed at the same the time, the copier may stop in the middle of scanning.
Remedy Wait until Copy or all scanning is over.
Read Data Error Message on the PC screen:
Cause An error occurred while reading data from the copier while scanning.
