1. Intro
Even though 2005 more than anything else is the year of colour we are proud to present our two new black & white office professionals to you, the Konica Minolta bizhub 250 and bizhub 350. Performing at an output speed of 25 and 35 pages per minute respectively, they offer a powerful bunch of features already in their standard configuration: their
comprehensive copying, network scanning as well as EmperonTM driven PCL and PS printing functions are the
perfect solution to the many-fold needs of small to mid-sized workgroups, departments and even small companies.
Increased ease of use thanks to the newly designed graphic user interface and large operation panel is only one of the many assets of the bizhub 250 and bizhub 350. They also offer a wide range of useful accessories like a fax kit, a separate scanner unit, a 40 GB hard disk, various paper feed cabinets as well as sophisticated finishing options, to name but a few.
Full Box functionality, LDAP support, User Authentication and volume track functions as well as compliance with the ISO 15408 EAL3 security standard are among the additional highlights of our two newcomers (some available from Phase 2 only!), not to forget the application of polymerised toner, which largely contributes to an increased output quality.
Due for launch in September 2005, the bizhub 250 and bizhub 350 replace the current Di2510(f)/3010/3510(f) and 7222/7228/7235. Let our office professionals do the job for you - and your customers!

2. Market
2.1 General Considerations (Source: CAP V)
We are working in an increasingly connected and digital environment. As a result, the definitions for the document and the office have changed. We have moved into a world of virtual and collaborative working, where the office workflow and information processing is becoming central to defining the total product solution. Electronic documents are experiencing exponential growth, shifting the focus away from hardcopy. With the total Western European paper market projected to remain flat over the next five years, the dynamics of the office market are undergoing a major transformation. The office is no longer in a fixed location. Todays office must be where the user is, be it at home, on the road, in a hotel room, or in a corporate building. Regardless of their location, workers still need to produce documents in the most convenient and efficient way. Vendors must find a way to address business issues as well as capture and share the information within an office environment. The Importance of the Workgroup Paper volume is forecasted to increase at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of only 0.6% between 2002 and 2007 in Western Europe. Nevertheless, there are pockets of growth within the office market, particularly in the Workgroup environment. This growth will be driven by office colour devices and multifunctional devices. These units are placed in shared environments and will be increasingly network-connected in the future. Connectivity enables users to easily share documents and information, driving the print volume from their office devices. The Workgroup will also see growth because of users in the Personal environment that are now networked and outputting most of their volume on a Workgroup device. In addition, some distributed documents are now being printed on demand in the Workgroup arena rather than in a Production printing environment. According to a study done by CAP-V in 2004 one third of corporate users believe that more than 50% of their documents will move to the network within 3 years. An increasing percentage of documents have moved from copying to printing, and this trend is expected to continue in the future. While the majority of customers considered most scanning applications to be important, scan-to-file was identified as critical by the greatest percentage of respondents. The largest percentage of scanned documents are archived.
Page 6
Key Findings Offices are beginning to shift their printing jobs away from traditional print providers in favour of outsourced corporate printing. Indicators suggest that new capabilities for in-house printing due to multifunctional devices will increase the demand for printing in the Workgroup environment. Overall, colour technology was found to have lower multiples present than black & white devices. Colour devices are still perceived as being more complex or expensive, and respondents from larger companies indicated having low numbers of colour copiers overall. Thats why bizhub 250 and bizhub 350 will be the first choice especially for major accounts/key accounts and for large corporate environments because of the very low running cost and the out of the box network print connectivity including PostScript!
2.2 Market Trend
Compared to 2003, total black & white office placements were up 11% in 2004 according to InfoSource. While all speed categories experienced growth, category 2 (20 - 39 ppm) increased by a stunning 18%. This increase in placements was mainly due to the ever stronger demand for multi-functional copier-printer products as well as colour-capable ones. While multi-functional devices already accounted for about 41% of all black & white and colourcapable product placements in 2004, their number is expected to almost double within the next few years. Even though this positive trend is mainly driven by colour-capable products, the potential for black & white multi-functional units to be sold successfully in parallel must not be underestimated.
Page 7
In terms of monochrome placements (cat. 2, ppm) in 2004, Konica Minolta was on place 2 with Canon taking the lead and Xerox closely following on place number 3.

2.3 Sales Approach
Within the Konica Minolta product range, the bizhub 250 and bizhub 350 have to cover the speed range from approx. 23 to 40 ppm. Both products clearly target the office environment, ie. small to mid-sized teams and departments as well as small companies. They are not only designed to replace analogue as well as first generation digital MIF, but also various stand-alone devices still present in many offices today by one compact, multi-functional unit. The all-in-one architecture and standard EmperonTM driven print controller will certainly positively support this aim, as do the specified recommended average and maximum print volumes of 7,000 pages average/28,000 pages max. for the bizhub 250 and 10,000 pages average/48,000 pages max. for the bizhub 350.
Our sales targets for both products over a 19 months period in the whole of Europe are as follows: bizhub 250: approx. 28,500 units bizhub 350: approx. 9,500 units
Given the fact that our two new products will replace the current range of eight different products (Di2510 and 2510f, Di3010, Di30510 and 3510f, 7222, 7228, 7235), order processing and logistics handling will be largely simplified.

3. Product Concept
The term bizhub usually stands for a certain feature set. The bizhub 250 and bizhub 350 do provide for some, but not all of them. Both products follow the guidelines for the new graphic user interface, however, they are not based on the bizhub OP. Yet, they are designed as compact, allin-one MFPs offering standard copying, EmperonTM driven PCL5e/6 and PS3 print functionality as well as standard network scanning features. Thanks to the 10baseT/100baseTX network interface card these include scan-to-eMail/FTP/SMB/iFax. Full Super G3 fax functionality is available as an individual option.
3.1 Standard Configuration
The standard configuration consists of the main body with two 500 sheet universal trays, a 150 sheet bypass, a stack-less duplex unit, 192 MB of memory, Ethernet and USB 2.0 interfaces as well as the Emperon controller.

5. Special Features (and their Benefit)
5.1 bizhub Design & Operation
The bizhub 250 and bizhub 350 are equipped with an overhauled tilt-capable panel with a userfriendly and easy to understand key layout. The large touch-screen LCD offers clearly laid out function keys following the guidelines for the new graphic user interface implemented into all our new product introductions. The hard key area has been re-arranged as shown below (major changes are circled in red):
Panel bizhub 250/350
Panel Di2510 series
Apart from the changes in the panel, only minor cosmetic improvements to the front cover have been applied. Moreover, the interfaces have been relocated from the machines back to the right hand side.
Page 15
5.2 Scanning
The document feeder scans with up to 70 originals per minute at a resolution of 200 x 200 dpi and with up to 41 originals per minute at 600 x 600 dpi. Thanks to the standard Ethernet 10baseT/100baseTX network card, features like scan to eMail, FTP, SMB and iFax are standard. Supported file formats are pdf and TIFF (single and multi-page; single-page TIFF is however only available for scan-to-FTP/SMB/HDD). Twain scanning and scan to HDD/Box is only possible if the optional hard disk (HD-504) is installed.
For a more detailed description of the various scanning functions available with the Konica Minolta products, please refer to our separate Scan Guide.
5.3 Printing
The bizhub 250 and bizhub 350 come equipped with the EmperonTM controller, thus offer PCL5e/6 and PS 3 printing as standard and support all common Operating Systems like Win98/Me, NT4.0/2000/XP/2003; Mac 9.x/10.x and OS X (with some limitations for Phase 1). The standard/maximum memory of 192/320 MB are shared with the copier.
In addition to the Ethernet 10/100 network card, a USB 2.0 interface is supplied as standard and a parallel IEEE 1284 interface is available as option to support local printing. HP Webjet Admin Plugins are available for download from the Konica Minolta website. Special functions include Secure Printing, Booklet, User Authentication, and Mixplex (combination of simplex and duplex prints, planned for Phase 2). Pdf/TIFF direct printing will not be available, although this was originally planned!
Page 16
Another highlight is the Secure Batch Print function that allows to release several secure print jobs in one shot:
Page 17
In terms of print performance a considerable improvement has been achieved with the Emperon TM controller in that the machines are now able to print at almost their rated speed in any application. According to our own tests with various print files, especially the PostScript speed is outstanding and even better than the PCL productivity, which was also largely improved. Thus, we must no longer fear competitors like the Ricoh Aficio 2035 or Canon iR3320i, which easily bet the print performance of our current products (e. g. Di3510).
Results when printing the 25 page (19 MB) Launch Guide of the C450 (Word document) were as follows:

5.4 Document/Personal Box
Up to 1,000 user boxes (999 personal + 1 public) will be available for copy, print and scan jobs from Phase 2. Initially, only 115 folders for scanning plus 1 public box are available. The public box can be used by all users. Access to the box can be controlled by specifying a password for it. Personal user boxes can be used by certain individuals only. If user authentication settings have been applied, the box can only be accessed by users who have logged on. Up to 100 documents can be stored per box.
Sending and printing of jobs is done individually per job. Using PageScope Box Operator, which will become available with Phase 2, several jobs can be retrieved in one shot from a box. Normally, jobs are not automatically deleted from a box (= default), but they can be set to be deleted at fixed intervals of 1 to 7 days (selectable).
5.5 Fax
Other than with the Di2510f and Di3510f, we now no longer have dedicated fax models, but a separate Super G3 fax option kit (FK-503) with a 33.6 Kbps modem, 200 up to 600 dpi resolution (normal, fine, superfine, ultra-fine), MH/MR/MMR/JBIG compression, which can be added on individually even after installation of the machine. The scanner unit (SU-501) is included with the fax kit, but is also available separately, supporting IP address fax, PC-Fax, IP scanner, received fax sorting, IP relay fax and IP/G3 Auto Select. Dual line fax, ie. simultaneous transmission and receipt of faxes, is supported when the multi-line kit option ML-502 is installed in addition to the fax kit.
Among the many available fax features are confidential transmission and receipt of faxes, automatic re-routing (via e-mail), polling, quick memory (ie. send while scan) as well as batch transmission. 540 one-touch keys and 300 broadcasting destinations further contribute to the ease of use and speed up operation.
Different from the Di2510 series, PC Network Fax is now provided on a CD bundled with FK-503.
Page 19
5.6 Security
The bizhub 250 and bizhub 350 will be compliant with the ISO 15408 EAL3 security standard after the release of Phase 2 firmware around
February/March 2006 so that certification can finally be expected by mid 2006. In addition to this, both products offer a range of additional safety features (some of them from Phase 2 only) such as secure printing, accounting/ function restriction for copy, print, scan, fax and box functions, user authentication, SSL encryption, IP filtering and more. The optional security chip SC-503 that will become available from Phase 2 encrypts data stored on the hard disc. Manual HDD data erasure will then also be possible.
5.7 User Authentication/Accounts
Use of network related functions can be restricted by Windows Active Directory via pre-registration of user IDs and passwords. Up to 1,000 accounts are available for volume tracking by user (division ID, password, volume track information). If user authentication and volume tracking are combined (which is planned from Phase 2), only up to 100 accounts are available due to the larger amount of data that need to be captured (SMTP authentication, POP before SMTP related settings per user plus the volume track data mentioned before).
5.8 Finishing
Thanks to the versatile and modular finishing options, almost anything is possible with the bizhub 250 and bizhub 350: from sorting, grouping, mailbin-sorting, multi-position stapling of max. 50 sheets, 4-hole punching up to complete booklet production for booklets consisting of max. 60 pages (15 sheets).
Page 20
5.9 Page Scope Utilities
The following CDs are available (bundled) with the bizhub 250 and bizhub 350: PageScope Utilities CD including Netcare, Network Setup, NDPS Gateway, EMS Plug-ins User Utility CD including PS DataAdministrator (with some limitations), PS Box Operator (Box Utility) from Phase 2, HDD Backup Utility and Log Collection Tool (TBD) PageScope Workware CD (trial version; previously Cabinet) Utilities that can be downloaded from the Web (free of charge) are: Plug-in for Web JetAdmin, CS Remote Care and possibly a Print utility for Unix (TBD); PS Router and PS Workware (full version) are available against charge.
5.10 Function/Option Matrix
The following matrix illustrates, which of the options is required to support the desired functionality:

6. Suggested Retail Pricing (SRP)
The extensive range of accessories allows to configure the bizhub 250 and bizhub 350 exactly according to the customers needs. Compared to the current Di-series products and also against some major competitors, the new models are very attractively priced, taking into account that printing and scanning features are already equipped as standard on the main body. Although the final pricing was not available at the time this guide was prepared, the following estimation already shows a very favourable picture:
Pricing (Engine + ADF + Duplex + Controller + Scanning)
D/N [Euro]
Scan PCL Network Feeder Main Body
The cost per copy (all in) is expected to be at least about 6% lower than that of the current Di2510 series.
Page 22
7. Competitive Comparison
Major competitors to our bizhub 250 are Canon iR2230/2270, Kyocera KM-2550, Ricoh Aficio 2022/2027 and Toshiba 230/280. Against the bizhub 350 these are Canon iR3530/3570, Kyocera KM-3035, Ricoh Aficio 2032/2035e, Toshiba 350 and Xerox C35. A full overview about competitive products compared with the bizhub 250 and bizhub 350 will be provided with the Competitive Encounter. The below screen shots only serve as examples of what this comparison will look like:
Page 23
8. Consumables
Since the bizhub 250 and bizhub 350 use polymerised toner, all consumables are new and exclusive for these two models. While the drum and developer last for 100,000 copies (bizhub 350) and 80,000 copies (bizhub 250) respectively, the toner yield is 17,500 copies for either model. Yet separate toner cartridges are provided for the bizhub 250 (TN211) and bizhub 350 (TN311).
9. Environmental Aspects
The new Blue Angel Mark, WEEE and Energy Star regulations are met as well as RoHS (Regulation on the use of Hazardous Substances), a regulation that prohibits the use of lead, mercury and other such substances with electronic equipment and which will come into force by mid 2006. Only the finisher and hard disk will not be compliant from the launch, but about three months later (autumn 2005). The DTS (German Definitive Telefax Standard) test has been passed for the fax option.
Page 24
10. Technical Improvements
Most mechanical improvements applied are directed at guaranteeing a higher paper feeding reliability (shape of paper guides was changed, guides were newly added etc.). Otherwise, items that most frequently caused service calls were investigated and addressed.
11. Phase 2 Release Beginning 2006
11.1 Availability Phase 2
