Quick guide

Creating your sound (Edit mode)

Signal flow

PRE FX DRIVE/AMP CABINET NR DELAY / REVERB MOD VOLUME PEDAL
When you select an effect, the AX5G automatically sets the parameters of that effect to their most effective values. In other words, you can create great sounds just by choosing an effect for each of the categories PRE FX, DRIVE/AMP, MOD, and DELAY/REV, without having to make detailed parameter settings. By adjusting the main parameters, you can tweak your sound to what you have in mind.
AX5G Owners manual Selecting and adjusting sub-parameters
[PRE FX-PARAM], [DRIVE/AMP-PARAM], [MOD-PARAM], [DELAY/ REV-PARAM]
Heres how to edit the sub-parameters of the effect youve selected for each of the [PRE FX], [DRIVE/AMP], [MOD], and [DELAY/REV] categories. When you press the [] or [] buttons, the program/value display will indicate a value of P1P5, and the LED in the upper part of the program down pedal will light (or blink) to indicate that the parameter type is being displayed.
For the sub-parameters that correspond to P1P5, refer to p.50 Parameter List. Depending on the guitar youre using, notes may be cut off if you raise the noise reduction value excessively. Adjust this so notes ring out naturally.
: Select the type (C0C9) of cabinet modeling.

You cant edit the cabinet model if the drive/amp model is off. In this. case, the LED will indicate Cabinet modeling is associated with the drive/amp model. It works only if the drive/amp model is turned on. When you change the drive/ amp model type, the most suitable cabinet model is selected automatically. Cabinet modeling is associated with the drive/amp model. It works only if the drive/amp model is turned on. When you change the drive/ amp model type, the most suitable model is selected automatically.
Now you can use the value dial to edit the sound by adjusting the various sub-parameters. At this time, the program/value display will indicate the parameter value, and the LED in the upper part of the program up pedal will light to indicate that the parameter value is being displayed.
If the effect is turned off, the program/value display will indicate when you set the function selector to a [PARAM] position for that category. If you want to edit the parameters of that effect, simultaneously press both the [] and [] buttons to turn the effect on.
: Specify the value of the parameter when the expression pedal is fully returned toward yourself. : Specify the value of the parameter when the expression pedal is fully advanced away from yourself.
Effect/parameter type and parameter value display
When you press the Program Down switch in Edit mode, the program/ value display will indicate the effect type or parameter type (F0F9, d0 d7, A0A7, P1P5). When you press the Program Up switch, the program/value display will indicate the parameter value. This gives you a convenient way to check the current settings.
To select an effect and edit it to your taste, you should first adjust the main parameters, and then adjust sub-parameter P1. In most cases, youll be able to get the sound you want by adjusting these two parameters.

[LEVEL/NR/CAB/PEDAL]

Set the function selector to this position when you want to adjust the program level, noise reduction, or cabinet modeling. Then press the [s] or [t] buttons to cycle the display through (program level), (cabinet), and , (Expression pedal (NR sensitivity), target range). Use the value knob to adjust each parameter. : Use the value knob to adjust the program level (0.010). A setting of 5.0 is the standard value. Some effect settings may cause clipping. If this occurs, lower the program level. : Adjust the noise reduction sensitivity (0.010) so that you dont hear noise (hiss) when youre not playing your guitar.

Expression pedal settings
Make the program/value display show the effect parameter (F0F9, d0 d7, A0A7, P1P5). Make sure that the LED of the program up pedal or program down pedal is blinking, and then hold down the pedal setting switch for about one second.
You cant use the expression pedal to control a parameter for which the program up pedal or program down pedal does not blink.
The program/value display will briefly indicate (Complete), and youll be able to use the expression pedal to control the effect parameter.
If the expression pedals control target is FX PARAM, changing the category of the effect controlled by the pedal will reset the pedal control target to the most useful parameter of the selected effect. (p.50 Parameter List) If you set the expression pedals control target to FX PARAM, the corresponding effect will automatically be turned On. If, in this state, you operate the pedal or press the pedal setting switch once to select VOLUME without editing the setting, the effect will automatically be turned Off again. However, if you did operate the pedal or edit the setting, the effect will remain On even if you press the pedal setting switch once again to select VOLUME as the target. If the expression pedals control target is WAH, you can turn the function select knob to [PRE FX] (the display will indicate ) or [PRE FXPARAM] and edit the WAH parameters. When the expression pedals control target is WAH, changing the [PRE FX] effect type will switch the expression pedals control target to VOLUME.
Checking the values saved in a program (Original Value)
In Edit mode, the original value LED in the program/value display indicates the parameter value that is saved in the program. When you use the knob or switches to modify the value of a parameter, the Original Value LED will light when that value matches the value thats already been saved in the program (i.e., the original value).
The original value LED wont light in Program mode.

Bypass and Mute

Bypass (which turns off all effects including noise reduction) and Mute (which mutes the AX5Gs output) are convenient functions for use while youre adjusting your guitar amp, tuning during a live performance, or switching guitars. Heres how to use Bypass or Mute.
Saving a program (Write mode)
Heres how to save (write) a sound that youve created.

If you switch to a different program in Program mode or turn off the power without writing your settings into memory, the changes you made will be lost.

Bypassing the AX5G

Simultaneously press the Program Up and Program Down switches; all effects will be bypassed. At this time, the program/value display will indicate .
1. Set the function selector to [WRITE]. 2. Press the [(WRITE)] button. The program number will blink. 3. Use the value knob or the program up/down switches to select the
program in which you want to save your settings.
4. Press the [(WRITE)] button once again. The program will be saved,
and the program/value display will indicate (Complete) briefly.
The newly saved program will overwrite (i.e., replace) the existing settings, so that the previous program in that location will be lost. If you decide not to save the new program, press the [CANCEL] button to cancel the operation.

Muting the AX5G

Simultaneously press and hold down the Program Up and Program Down switches for about one second and the output will be muted. At this time, the program/value display will indicate . When bypassed or muted, the Auto Chromatic Tuner will be active. To cancel the bypass or mute function, press the Program Up or Program Down switch (this will not change the program). At this time the value knob will operate as the master volume.
The AX5G has a built-in Auto Chromatic Tuner. You can calibrate the reference pitch (the note A) of the tuner in a range of A438 HzA445 Hz.
Adjusting the pedal sensitivity
If fully advancing the pedal does not produce the maximum effect or volume even though the AX5Gs expression pedal / settings are respectively set to minimum/maximum, or if the effect or volume does not reach the minimum when you fully return the pedal, or if fully advancing the pedal does not switch the effect on/off when the expression pedal setting is WAH or FX PARAM, use the following procedure to adjust the sensitivity of the expression pedal so that it will operate optimally.
When adjusting the sensitivity, you should use your foot to operate the expression pedal. Accurate adjustment may not be possible if you use your hand.

Tuning procedure

1. The Auto Chromatic Tuner will be activated when the AX5G is bypassed or muted.

If you want to tune silently, such as during a live performance, simply mute the AX5G.
2. Play a note on your guitar and the program/value display will indicate the name of the closest note. Note names are indicated as follows.

Note name Display

1. Turn the power off. 2. While holding down
the pedal setting switch and the [(WRITE)] button, turn on the power. Continue holding down these two switches until the program/value display indicates (Pedal).
3. If your guitar is sharp (pitch too high), the Program Up switch LED
will blink. If your guitar is flat (pitch too low), the Program Down switch LED will blink. In either case, more rapid blinking indicates that your guitar is farther from the correct pitch. When in tune, both the Program Up and Program Down LEDs will light.
3. Release your hand from the switches, and return the expression pedal

back towards yourself.

Take your hand off the pedal Return toward yourself
Adjusting the tuner calibration
When you turn on the power, the built-in tuner is set to a reference pitch of A 440 Hz (concert pitch). You can use the []/[] buttons to calibrate this in the range of 438 Hz445 Hz. When doing so, the program/value display will indicate a value of 3845.
When you turn off the power, the calibration adjustment you made will be discarded and the AX5G will automatically be set to 440 Hz.
4. Advance the expression pedal forward to the position where the effect should turn on/off.

Advance pedal

2. Release your hand from the switches you were pressing. 3. If you wish to reload the factory settings press the [(WRITE)] but(Load) and reloadton. The program/value display will indicate ing will begin. When reloading is completed, the program/value display will indicate , and the AX5G will automatically enter Program mode.
5. Take your foot off the expression pedal while its still advanced forward. 6. The pedal will return by itself when you remove your foot. When the pedal
has returned by itself, press the [(WRITE)] button. The display will indi(Complete) and the sensitivity will be adjusted. After the display cate has indicated the AX5G will automatically switch to Program mode.
If you decide not to carry out this adjustment, press the [(CANCEL)] switch.
You cant cancel the reload operation once youve pressed the [ (WRITE) ] button. Never turn off the power while reloading. If you decide to cancel the reload operation, press the [(CANCEL)] button while the program/value display indicates .

Troubleshooting

AX5-Series EasyStart

The following procedures work for both the AX5G and AX5B effect pedals
Audio Connections and Tuning
1. 2. 3. 4. With four AA batteries installed, or the optional adaptor connected to the Power Supply Input, connect your guitar/bass to the INPUT jack on the rear panel. Set the Function Selector knob to PROGRAM and lower the MASTER output level of the AX5 using the Value Knob. Connect your headphones, mixer, or amplifier to the OUTPUT jack on the rear panel; then use the Value Knob to raise the MASTER level, increasing the volume. Tune up! Step on the Program Up and Down Switches simultaneously to activate Bypass mode; the auto-chromatic tuner will be active (if both switches are held for approx. 1 second, Mute mode will be activated). Pluck a string; the Program/Value Display will indicate the note name, and the Program Switch LEDs will indicate whether the note is sharp or flat. When both lights are lit simultaneously, the string is in tune. 5. Return to the previous mode by stepping on either of the Program switches.
Restoring the Factory Preset Programs
1. While holding down both Program UP and DOWN Switches and the CANCEL Button, connect the power adaptor (or if using batteries, power up by plugging a cable into the input jack). The Program/Value Display will indicate rL and the Program Switch LEDs will blink. Release the button and switches. 2. Press the WRITE Button once (Ld will display). The factory programs will be loaded into the user area (01~40). When loading is completed, the Program/Value Display will indicate CP briefly, and program number 01 will be recalled. Note: To cancel this operation when the program value display reads rL press the Cancel button instead of the Write button. Note: Note: If you reload the preset programs, all previously stored custom programs will be overwritten! Never turn off the power while this operation is in progress!
Selecting and listening to the AX5s Programs
The AX5 pedals provide 80 program locations; 8 banks with 10 programs in each (8x10=80). Programs 01 - 40 are User locations that can be customized and saved. Programs 41 - 80 are factory preset, and can be modified but cannot be overwritten.
1. 2. Tip: Set the Function Selector knob to PROGRAM. Using the program UP and DOWN Switches, you can now scroll through and audition all 80 programs. To jump from bank to bank (as opposed to scrolling through each individual program), use the Cancel and Write buttons.

Tweak the AX5s Programs

Each of the AX5s 80 programs can be modified to your liking. This includes chaining effects types as well as effect parameters.
1. 2. Set the Function Selector knob to the effect type you wish to edit (i.e. PRE FX, DRIVE/AMP, MOD, DELAY/REV, etc.) Use the Write (UP) & Cancel (DOWN) Buttons to scroll through the various effect choices. (Press UP & DOWN buttons simultaneously to turn FX type off).

AX3-Series EasyStart

The effect chart printed on the face of your AX5G and B will be indispensable in locating and identifying the various available effect choices. There is also a more detailed chart in the back of the included manual.
Use the Value Knob to adjust the FXs main parameter. To fine tune the sub-parameters (not applicable to LEVEL, NR, CAB, MIC & BODY, TONE, and NOTCH), set the Function Knob to the corresponding effect type PARAM position (the next position moving clockwise on the knob). Choose the desired parameter with the Write (UP) & Cancel (DOWN) Buttons and use the Value Knob to adjust the parameter value.
A list of effect parameters can be found in the aforementioned effect chart in the rear of the manual. This will be very helpful in determining which parameter is being adjusted.
The Original Value Indicator (small dot in the lower right corner of the Program/Value Display) can be used to indicate the saved effect parameter settings of the currently selected program. Simply put, when the Original Value Indicator is lit, the previously saved effect parameter setting has been selected.

Example (all AX5 models)

1. 2. 3. Select MOD with the Function Knob. Use the Write (UP) & Cancel (DOWN) Buttons to select F2 (CL Flange). Then use the Value Knob to adjust the CL Flange effects Main parameter (SPEED). Turn the Function Knob clockwise one position to PARAM. Use the Write (UP) & Cancel (DOWN) Buttons to select P2 (DEPTH). Use the Value Knob to adjust the level of the DEPTH parameter. Note: In this mode, if you press the Program Up (Value) switch, the current parameter value will be displayed. If you press the Program Down (Type/Param) switch, it will display to the currently selected FX type/parameter.

Saving a Program

Youve tweaked and turned some knobs, and you like the changes that youve made now to save your program:
1. Set the Function Knob to the WRITE position, and press WRITE (UP) Button. A User program number will blink in the Program/Value Display. 2. 3. Use the Program Up and Down Switches or Value Knob to select the destination program number (1 - 40) Press the WRITE (UP) Button once again, and your program will be stored in the specified location (CP will display briefly indicating the process is complete).
Amp/Line Setting (AX5G only)
The AX5Gs output may be optimized to suit specific monitoring sources via the Amp/Line setting. Amp/Line settings can be made under the P5 parameter of the Drive/Amp (Note; the amp line setting is only applicable to Amp models {i.e. A0, A1, A2, A3, etc.} and will not be found on Drive models {i.e. D0, D1, D2, D3, etc.}). Select A1 if you connect the AX5s output to the input of a clean-sounding open back combo. Select A2 if you connect the AX5s output to the input of an open back combo with stronger mid-range content. Select A3 if you connect the AX5s output into a sealed back cabinet such as an amp stack. Select Ln if you connect the AX5s output into a line input such as a mixer, recorder, headphones or any other full range monitoring source.
Quick Assign - Assigning a specific effect parameter to the Expression Pedal
The AX5s expression pedal can be set to control volume, wah, and many effects parameter like the speed of the tremolo or depth of a reverb. Assigning an effect parameter to the expression pedal using the quick assign feature is easy:
1. 2. 3. First choose an effect type by turning the Function Selector to the appropriate effect section. Lets choose Delay/REV. Use the Write (UP) & Cancel (DOWN) Buttons to select an effect. In this case, lets go with F4 (PP delay). Turn the Function Knob clockwise one position to PARAM. Use the Write (UP) & Cancel (DOWN) Buttons to select P2 (Feedback). Note: You should notice that the Program Down Switch led is blinking. This is the indication that you can assign this particular parameter (Feedback) to the expression pedal. You cant use the expression pedal to control a parameter for which the Program Up or Program Down switches do not blink. 4. Hold down the Assign button for about 1 second. The display will read CP. You have now successfully assigned the Feedback of the PP Delay to the expression pedal.

Assigning the Expression Pedal to Volume, Wah, or FX Param
To switch the expression pedal between control of Volume, Wah, or FX Param, just press the pedal setting switch (Assign button) to scroll though the 3 choices: Volume, Wah, and FX PARAM.
Note: Each time you press this button the control target will change in this order. Vol, Wah, FX PARAM. The LED will light as follows: Orange for Volume Red for Wah Green for FX PARAM
