Introduction

Warning!

Warning: The HDK-iS35 (code FDD0003002) or HDK-i40M (code FDD0003001) kit must be installed by an Authorized Korg Service Centre. The instruments contain live parts that may cause serious personal injuries. Do not install the kit on your own. Korg declines any responsibility in case of damages to persons or properties caused by the opening of the instrument by unauthorized personnel.
iS35 and i40M Owners Manual
The Korg iS35-HD or i40M-HD is an iS35 or i40M provided with hard disk. If you have an iS35, you can convert it into an iS35-HD with the HDK-iS35 kit. If you have an i40M, you can convert it into an i40M-HD with the HDK-i40M kit. Installation must be carried out by an Authorized Korg Service Centre. The iS35-HD or i40M-HD is basically an iS35 or i40M. Refer to the iS35 or i40M Owners Manual for information on how to use the instrument. This manual describes the functions related to the hard disk in the Disk/Global, Song Play and Song Edit operating modes.

Hard disk structure

The iS35-HD or i40M-HD hard disk is divided into partitions. A partition is a disk unit that is separate from the other ones. Each partition must be considered as an highcapacity disk capable of containing the same data as a disk (midiles, styles, arrangements, programs, etc.).
Just like in an MS-DOS computer, partitions are identied by a letter or number from C and Z, and from 1 to 9. The number of partitions is set by Korg when producing the hard disk. Each partition can contain up to 224 les.

Hard disk automatic stop

The hard disk automatically stops when not used. It starts again and gets ready in a few seconds when you perform an operation on it.
Displaying the songs in alphabetical order
In the previous releases of the operating system, songs were displayed in the order in which they were saved on the disk. The iS35-HD or i40M-HD operating system displays the songs in alphabetical order, making it easier to search a song on the hard disk.
Selecting the songs with the numerical keypad
In this release of the operating version, you can select the songs by entering the progressive number that was automatically assigned when saving them. The progressive number is displayed on Page 1 in the Song Play mode. See Selecting the songs with the progressive number on page 5.

New Disk functions

The Copy (see Copying a le on page 9) and Format HD (see Formatting the hard disk on page 11) functions have been introduced to make le management on the hard disk easier.
Upgrading the operating system
The iS35-HD and i40M-HD operating system can be upgraded by loading the new system from disk. The new operating system can be downloaded from www.korg.it.

If, for instance, you save the song MICHELLE rst and then MYWAY, RAGTIME, and CHOPIN the following numbers will be assigned to the songs: 1. MICHELLE 2. MYWAY 3. RAGTIME 4. CHOPIN When you delete a song, its progressive number will become free. If you save a new song, the new song will be saved in the free location. If, for instance, you delete the song RAGTIME and save PRELUDE the order of the songs will be as follows:

1. MICHELLE 2. MYWAY

3. PRELUDE
4. CHOPIN Note: Numbers cannot be manually assigned to the songs. The number is always assigned automatically when saving the song on disk. The number of the selected song is shown on the display on Page 1 in the Song Play mode:
Entering the number in the iS35-HD
When you are on Page 1 in the Song Play mode, the ARRANGEMENT section can be converted into a numerical keypad used to select the songs. Since the number assigned to the song is always a three-digit number, it may be necessary to enter one or two zeros before the number (i.e. 9 becomes 009).
Use the buttons in the ARRANGEMENT section to enter the number. For instance, to select song number 95, press 0 (A or B), 9 (USER), and 5 in a sequence. To select song number 9 press 0 (A or B), 0 (A or B), and 9 (USER) in a sequence.

When you are on Page 1 in the Song Play mode, the PROGRAM/ARRANG section can be converted into a numerical keypad used to select the songs. Since the number assigned to the song is always a three-digit number, it may be necessary to enter one or two zeros before the number (i.e. 9 becomes 009). To enter the number, press the PROGRAM/ARRANG button to light up the ARRANG LED and use the buttons in the PROGRAM/ARRANG section:

Button BANK A, B, C BANK D, E, F NUMBER [1-8]
Press the PROGRAM/ARRANG button to light up the ARRANG LED. Enter the song number. For instance, to select song number 95, press 0 (A, B or C), 9 (D, E or F), and 5 in a sequence. To select song number 9, press 0 (A, B or C), 0 (A, B or C), and 9 (D, E or F) in a sequence.

Other functions

Copying a le
The COPY FILE function (CPY) allows for copying les from a disk to a hard disk partition, or from a hard disk partition to another partition. All the le types recognized by the instruments (arrangements, styles, backing sequences, programs, midiles) can be copied. Note: Files cannot be copied within the same disk unit (i.e. from partition HD-C to partition HD-C). 1 Press DISK/GLOBAL to enter the Disk/Global mode.
Move the cursor to UTIL (UTILITY) and press ENTER/YES. The Utility page will appear on the display.
Move the cursor to CPY (COPY) and press ENTER/YES.

Origin unit

File to be copied

Destination unit

Hold the DISK/GLOBAL or TRK SELECT button pressed and use the TEMPO/ VALUE buttons (or the DIAL) to select the disk unit (partition or disk drive) that contains the les to be copied. The name of the origin disk unit is shown on top left. Move the cursor to the name of the disk unit to which the les must be copied in the second line of the display and select the destination unit with the TEMPO/VALUE buttons (or the DIAL). Now you can copy the les in any of the three procedures indicated below:

A - Copying a single le

This function allows you to copy a single le from the origin to the destination unit. 3 Move the cursor to the name of the le to be copied. Select the le with the TEMPO/VALUE buttons (or the dial). Press ENTER/YES to start copying. Note: The FILENAME.MID exists message will appear (where FILENAME is the name of the le being copied) if the destination unit contains a le under the same name. Press ENTER/YES to conrm copying or EXIT/NO to cancel. The rst free progressive number will be assigned to the le.
B - Copying all the midiles (songs,.MID les)
This function allows you to copy all the midiles contained in the disk or hard disk partition. 3 Move the cursor to the name of the les to be copied. Hold the [UP/+] button pressed to go to the end of the song list. The last item but one on the list is the MIDI Files option. Select this option. Press ENTER/YES to start copying. Note: When copying all the midiles, the les in the origin disk unit will be merged with the les in the destination disk unit. If the origin disk unit contains les that

Chapter 3

already exist in the destination unit, the existing les will be deleted and replaced with the les from the origin disk unit. For instance, if the MICHELLE.MID le exists both in the origin and destination unit, the le in the destination unit will be deleted and replaced with the le from the origin unit. The copy function identies the free progressive numbers and assigns them to the new les. The progressive numbers that are still free will be assigned to the remaining les. For this reason, the progressive number assigned to the songs in the destination unit may be different from the number they have in the origin unit. See Selecting the songs with the progressive number on page 5.

C - Copying all the les

This function allows you to copy all the les (arrangements, styles, backing sequences, programs, midiles) contained in the disk or hard disk partition. 3 Move the cursor to the name of the le to be copied. Hold the [UP/+] button pressed to go to the end of the song list. The last item on the list is the All Files option. Select this option. Press ENTER/YES to start copying. Note: When copying all the les, the les in the origin disk unit will be merged with the les in the destination disk unit. If the origin disk unit contains les that already exist in the destination unit, the existing les will be deleted and replaced with the les from the origin disk unit. As regards the midiles (songs,.MID les), the copy function identies the free progressive numbers and assigns them to the new les. The progressive numbers that are still free will be assigned to the remaining les. For this reason, the progressive number assigned to the songs in the destination unit may differ from the number they have in the origin disk unit.

Formatting the hard disk

The procedure used to format disks is described in the Owners Manual. This section illustrates how to format the hard disk. Each hard disk partition must be individually formatted once the HDK-iS35 or HDK-i40M kit has been installed. Formatting will only delete the partition you have selected, not the entire hard disk.
Press DISK/GLOBAL to enter the Disk/Global mode.
Move the cursor to UTIL (UTILITY) and press ENTER/YES. The Utility page will appear.

is35/is40/is50/i40M Load one Style and managing styles Tutorial
Step-by-step tutorial on how to manage your user styles. The Scenario An end user has bought or found on the Internet, some i-series styles. When loading in the styles, the end user quickly finds that he/she does not want all of the styles. Rather the end user would like to move the styles around to make a Best Of disk, containing the styles that are useful. The end user quickly finds out that loading in a new set, always wipes out the old set. How does one keep user styles in the Korg unit and then load in more user styles? How does one make a Best of disk with only the styles needed and wanted for a gig? The Answer One must get to know and use the Load One function. There is no way to load in a complete set of styles into the is35/40/50 or i40M and then move these styles. One must load the styles in one at a time to specify their location in Disk/Global mode. In this example, let us underline that the end user has 2 disks. One disk named Funk has 8 new styles and arrangements. Using LOAD ALL put these styles and arrangements into U11 to U18. The next disk named R&B has 8 new styles and arrangements whose destinations are the same as the Funk set (U11 to U18 for styles and arrangements). In this example, we would like to have the first set Funk styles and arrangement loaded into U11 to U18, and the second set R&B styles and arrangements loaded into U21 to U28. We will then save this set-up so all styles and arrangement can load in one shot using LOAD all. Since you have loaded in your new styles from the example above, and of course wish to proceed, you must first jot down on a piece a paper the: Names of the arrangement from the set(s) you have loaded Where the arrangement is located (U11 or whatever) The styles name and location the arrangement is using. In order to find out this information, use the page + button to find the STY page. This information is crucial to understanding and managing your styles and arrangements. Procedure 1. Insert the Funk disk. Push the Disk/Global button on your Korg unit 2. Highlight <LOAD> then push the YES/Enter button NOTE: use the cursor keys <Cursor> to change selections. When you have highlighted an item, it will flash. 3. Highlight <ALL> then push the YES/Enter button 4. Highlight <ALL> again then push the YES/Enter button 5. Wait a moment will appear on the screen, then a file name like FUNK (Yes) If you do no see the Funk filename, use the -/+ buttons until you do. Please see the end of this document is you encounter DIR 6. Push the Yes button. Now loading will appear Do not worry is you see File Missing or something like this on the screen after loading. This is just your models way of ignoring any extra data that the unit does not recognized. Go to Arr. Play mode, user bank, and you will see the new styles/arrangements Now in order to load in the next 8 styles/arrangements one MUST use the load one option. 7. Insert the R&B disk. Push the Disk/Global button 8. Highlight <LOAD> then push the Yes/Enter button 9. Use the cursor keys now to highlight <ONE> then push YES/Enter 10. Highlight <STY> then push the YES/Enter button 11. Push the -/+ buttons until you screen reads R&B U11 -> U11 We need to clarify what this display means. To the left is the file folder name, in this case R&B. The first number is where the file would be if it were loaded in with LOAD All. The number to the right is the
destination or where we want this file to go. Remember in our example above, the second disk contained 8 styles/arrangements that were loaded into U11 to U18. We want to load U11 into U21, U12 to 22 and etc. So in order to load what was U11 into U21 our display must read as follows R&B U11 -> U21 This now means that the style that would have automatically been placed in U11 is to be loaded into the U21 destination. 12. Once your display reads as above, push the YES/Enter button 13. Repeat the process for the other 7 styles. Here is a run down of how the display will change. R&B U12 -> U22 R&B U13 -> U23 R&B U14 -> U24 R&B U15 -> U25 R&B U16 -> U26 R&B U17 -> U27 R&B U18 -> U28 Now you have loaded the 8 other styles into 8 new locations. We must repeat this process for the arrangements. 14. Push the Disk/Global button 15. Highlight <LOAD> then push the Yes/Enter button 16. Use the cursor keys now to highlight <ONE> then push YES/Enter 17. Highlight <ARR> then push the YES/Enter button 18. Push the -/+ buttons until you screen reads R&B U11 -> U11 Of course we will have to change these parameters just like we did with the styles. So repeat this process 8 times as follows. R&B U11 -> U21 R&B U12 -> U22 R&B U13 -> U23 R&B U14 -> U24 R&B U15 -> U25 R&B U16 -> U26 R&B U17 -> U27 R&B U18 -> U28 Now you have 16 styles and arrangements in their appropriated places. But the new 21 to 28 arrangements are pointing to styles U11-18, which are your Funk styles. To change, simply go to Arr.Play mode and select Arrangement 21. Push the page + button until you see the style tagged to this arrangement. STY: U11 Funk1 Change this to: STY: U21 R&B. Now write the arrangement. Use the Page + buttons until you see Write Arrangement. Push the YES/Enter button. Repeat for arrangements 22 to 28. Now you should save all the work you have done. To save, simply insert a blank formatted 3- HD disk. 1. Push the Disk/Global button 2. Highlight <SAVE> then push the YES/Enter button 3. Highlight <ALL>, name your file and then push YES/Enter

A note about the DIR command
Sometimes, a set is saved on another I-series keyboard other than the model you may have. It is also possible that an end user used a computer or did not correctly set up the diskette to follow the above instruction to the letter. One may encounter a DIR on the screen. This simply stands for directory up, or in other words, one must open another folder to get to the end objective. This is the same as the i30 and Pa80s open command (see tutorial on Korg File Systems and Icons and Pa80/i30 New Styles Loading/Saving at http://www.korgcanada.com/KorgCanada/Tutorials.htm)
If you need to go up a directory or open a folder (both mean the same), then when seeing the DIR on screen, push Up/+ button. Now one has opened the folder. To find the files one is looking for, use the -/+ buttons.

Memory Full messages

If one encounters any error messages about memory or style memory being full, then one should first wipe out the style memory onboard your Korg unit before proceeding to load in the new styles. Please visit http://www.korgcanada.com/KorgCanada/Tutorials.htm and download the i30/is35/is40/is50/i40M Initialize Styles Set file. Once this file is unzipped, detailed instructions are attached to this file in the form of a Read Me document.
Operating system upgrades
Please make sure you have the latest operating system for your Korg product. If you encounter any problems with this step-by-step tutorial, an old operating system is the likely cause. Please visit http://www.korgcanada.com/KorgCanada/docs.htm
