The success of the HDTV rollout in Europe will be measured in terms of consumer satisfaction. Information is key for end users, and our industry has tried to educate the public via a range of different channels to ensure that people understand the full benefits of high definition. One example is the creation of a unique set of logos (HD Ready, HD Ready 1080p, HDTV, HDTV 1080p) that provide consumers with a guarantee that displays from different manufacturers are future proof and fully compliant with commonly agreed technical standards. Without doubt, HD television represents a major technical milestone. It has opened the door to new developments that are being explored by the digital technology industry, and generated new expectations among consumers. Our sector will continue to innovate and collaborate with other stakeholders, seizing the opportunities offered by this new standard and shaping the world by design. HD ready

Designed for display devices - including integrated digital TVs, monitors and projectors - that can accept, process and display High Definition 720p and 1080i signals. To enjoy HDTV broadcasts, these devices will need to be used in conjunction with an (HD TV) device that can receive and decode the signals.

HD ready 1080p

Designed for display devices - including integrated digital TVs, monitors and projectors - that can in addition to 720p and 1080i also accept, process and display High Definition 1080p signals. Display devices bearing the HD ready 1080p logo feature a 19201080 or bigger screen resolution. To enjoy HDTV broadcasts, these devices will need to be used in conjunction with an HD TV device that can receive and decode the signals.
Designed for television receivers - including set-top boxes and integrated digital TVs - that can receive and decode HD (720p, 1080i) satellite, cable or terrestrial broadcast transmissions.

HD TV 1080p

Designed for HD ready 1080p display devices that can also receive and decode HD (720p, 1080i) Satellite, Cable or Terrestrial broadcast transmissions. Display devices bearing the HD TV 1080p logo feature a 19201080 or bigger screen resolution.

HDTV market status and future prospects Dear Mr. Fritz, HDTV is available in many European countries, but market penetration is very fragmented. Why? The main European HDTV markets are the UK, France and Spain. Other markets showing consistent growth include Italy, Poland, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the Scandinavian countries. In Germany, high-definition programming is limited but set to grow with the launch of services from ZDF, ARD and leading private broadcasters. Finally, HDTV has launched in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and momentum is growing steadily in other central and eastern European markets. There are several reasons for this uneven growth: Launching an HD service requires significant investment from broadcasters. Pay-TV services tend to be first to launch because funding such an investment is easier than in free-to-air markets. There are millions of HD-ready TVs in Europe, but relatively few HD settop boxes: in Germany, for example, only 170000 HD receivers were sold in 2007. In general, broadcasters will only offer high-definition content when theyre convinced that the number of homes cawww.ses-astra.com
System Integration for a more reliable future Dear Mr. Hecker, recently there has been a notable trend towards televisions with integrated HDTV receivers (IDTVs), which makes set-top boxes unnecessary. What are the advantages of this integration? Integration gives consumers a wide range of advantages including simplicity no need for a set-top box with all its cables ease of use, and a single unified remote control. Also, in times of high-energy costs consumers want equipment that saves power: getting rid of external components reduces household energy consumption. In addition, integrated HDTV receivers can usually process more than one signal path: this is not a feature found on external receivers at the moment. Finally, in countries such as Germany where HD broadcasts are still limited, consumers who buy IDTVs are making a future-proof purchase. What changes need to be made so that the industry can increase the availability of such products? pable of watching it is sufficiently large. Broadcast satellites offer very attractive high-definition programming. In Europe, for example, ASTRA leads the field with nearly 70 channels. Other infrastructures deliver significantly fewer channels, which has led to HDTV being more successful in traditional satellite TV markets. What do you think is needed to make HDTV more successful? I believe the first priority is closer cooperation between all players in the HDTV market, so that there is more programming on offer, and a much larger pool of HD receivers. Consumers are already aware that HD will replace conventional or standard-definition TV, so Id like to see our market partners selling more HD receivers and TVs with integrated HD receivers, rather than digital receivers, which may not be entirely future proof. High-definition receivers have a longer lifespan because they can receive conventional and HD programming. I would also encourage broadcasters to acknowledge that high definition is here to stay. The HD roadmap for public channels is a clear signal to the industry and the consumer, and shows that HD will establish itself as the television standard of the future. We also need common, network-independent technical standards so that the industry doesnt waste time, effort and money on manufacturing equipment with different and competing technical standards or formats. It gives the trade the confidence to get behind the marketing of a new technology, and encourages consumers to invest more readily because they dont have to wait for the outcome of a format or standards war. Proprietary and competing standards serve only to complicate and slow down the development of markets because they confuse consumers and delay their purchasing decisions.
