One of the most practical benefits of satellite broadcasting is its large bandwidth availability. This allows the simultaneous transmission of thousands of video and audio channels. Until now, sending these channels from the satellite dish to multiple receivers in a single family home or an apartment building has often required complex, expensive and timeconsuming installations. These involve numerous coaxial cable runs or drops, and become even more complicated with dual-tuner personal video recorders (PVRs), because two or more cables need to be laid to each receiver.

To simplify these types of installation, a consortium led by SES ASTRA has developed a new industry standard for distributing satellite signals over a single coaxial cable CENELEC EN50494. The system significantly reduces the complexity of multiplereceiver and dual-tuner PVR installations and can also result in considerable savings on labour and material costs. Many manufacturers already offer low noise blocks (LNBs), multiswitches and digital receivers that are compatible with this new standard. These components allow consumers to easily upgrade and extend existing installations: for example, adding a receiver to another room or replacing a standard set-top box with a dual-tuner PVR.

How it works

Satellite transponders are translated into user bands allocated to specific receivers in the installation. The translation is done in the LNB, or the distribution unit/multiswitch, and is made possible by specially developed chips from Entropic Communications and ST Microelectronics. The receiver then instructs the LNB or multiswitch to allocate a requested channel to its own user band.
