Before first use
s Remove the protective foil from the base grid. s Remove the strip of paper from the filling funnel of the coffee-beans container. Determining the hardness of the water Before using for the first time or after a change in the hardness of the water, it is necessary to adjust the appliance to the appropriate degree of hardness. You can either find out the water hardness by asking the local water authority or you can determine it by using the test piece in stick form supplied with the appliance. Immerse the test stick in cold water for one second. Shake off the surplus water and determine the hardness by observing the pink-coloured area. Degree of hardness 0 very soft 1 soft 2 medium hard 3 hard 4 very hard over 3,7 over 21 over 38
Water hardness mol/m3 up to 0,7 up to 1,24 up to 2,5 up to 3,7 German hardness degree up to 4 up to 7 up to 14 up to 21 French hardness degree up to 7,2 up to 12,6 up to 25,2 up to 37,8 Test strip
Setting and memorising the water hardness You can set any one of 5 levels of hardness. The simultaneous preparation of two cups of strong espresso or coffee is not possible. If you accidentally actuate the key, you can cancel the action by pressing the or the key. Place a receptacle beneath the espresso delivery pipe, however, as a little water will run out. Using ready-ground coffee-meal
You have already prepared the appliance. When the rinsing process is finished, the following lamps will glow: rinse; 1 cup normal; 1 cup strong; 2 cups; coffee-meal. s Open the lid of the coffee feed funnel and put in one or two level measuring spoonfuls of espresso- or coffee-meal (16). s Press the key (17a). The coffee-meal indicator will blink and the 1 cup normal and 2 cups indicators will glow. s Now select and press the required (17b). or the as
Caution! Do not put more than two level measuring spoonfuls into the feed funnel. The funnel is not a storage receptacle. Neither should you put in less than one level measuring spoonful, otherwise the espresso or coffee delivery will be automatically interrupted. Use only ground coffee-beans and not instant coffee or drink powders.
appliance indicator(s) Breaking off the brewing process If you wish to break off the brewing process before it is completed, actuate any one of the following keys: , , , or. The process then will be stopped and the spent coffee automatically thrown out. Emptying the spent coffee holder and the drawer The spent coffee holder receives the used coffee-meal and the drawer takes up any remaining water.
s If the empty spent coffee holder indicator glows, raise the drawer slightly and then pull it out (18). Empty both the spent coffee holder and the drawer. The empty spent coffee holder indicator will blink if the drawer is either not inserted or if it is not correctly located. Note: Whilst the empty spent coffee holder indicator is glowing or blinking, it is not possible to prepare espresso or coffee. s Empty the drawer when the drawer-float has risen to the mark (19). Note: When you remove the drawer together with the spent coffee holder from the appliance before the coffee grounds holder indicator begins to glow, always empty the spent coffee holder, as the next indicator otherwise follows too late and the holder could overflow.
Preparation of steam
Steam can be used for frothing up milk for cappuccino and also for the heating of liquids. Since the production of steam requires a higher temperature than that for the preparation of espresso, the appliance is furnished with an additional pre-heating phase for steam.
s Press the steam pre-selector key for about one second (20), whereupon the steam indicator will blink. When the preheating phase is completed, the steam indicator will glow and you can commence the production of steam.
appliance indicator(s) Due to the nature of the system, a little water will run out of the steam nozzle before each time steam is produced. Proceed therefore as follows:
s Place a separate receptacle beneath the steam nozzle and turn the selector knob for steam/hot water to the position (21). s As soon as steam issues from the nozzle, turn the selector knob back to the position and remove the receptacle.
Frothing up milk for cappuccino A cappuccino consists of 1/3 each of espresso, milk and milk-froth. Fill a large cup 1/3 with espresso. Then froth up the milk for the cappuccino. Use the separate frothing aid to achieve the optimum result. s Push the frothing aid onto the steam nozzle. Note: Use the frothing aid only for the frothing-up of milk. s Pour about 100 ml of low-fat milk into a small, narrow jug of not more than 0.5 litre capacity which will fit below the steam nozzle of the appliance. Note: The milk should be well-cooled and the jug used should also be cold, so do not rinse it first in warm water. s Hold the jug under the frothing aid in such a way, that the nozzle section dips completely into the milk. s Turn the selector knob for steam/hot water to the position (22).
With this appliance, you can prepare hot water for making instant drinks, etc. s Place a cup beneath the steam nozzle and turn the selector knob for steam/hot water to the position. s When the cup is sufficiently filled with hot water, return the selector knob to the position.
Switching off the appliance
s Place a receptacle beneath the espresso delivery pipe and press the key. A rinsing operation will then be automatically carried out, after which the appliance will switch itself off. Note: This rinsing operation will also be carried out when the pre-set automatic switch-off mechanism comes into play.
Cleaning and general care
s Always pull out the mains plug before any cleaning operation and allow the appliance to cool down. Do not use any materials which scratch, scrape or corrode. Wipe the casing inside and outside with a moist cloth only. s Clean the drawer, drawer attachment, spent coffee holder and base grid with warm water and washing-up liquid (25). s Rinse out the water tank with fresh water. s Never put the appliance or any of its parts into the dishwasher. Caution! The steam nozzle can become very hot. Be careful not to burn or scald yourself. Never assemble or disassemble the steam nozzle whilst it is hot. s Clean the steam nozzle immediately after the milk-frothing operation by allowing the appliance to produce steam for 1-2 seconds, thus blowing any residue out of the nozzle. Then wipe down the nozzle with a moist cloth. If the nozzle has become blocked, clear it with a needle. Where necessary, the steam nozzle can be screwed out in an anticlockwise direction using the hexagonal key on the measuring spoon, after which it can be thoroughly cleaned (26). After cleaning, screw back the nozzle in a clockwise direction.
The frothing aid can be dismantled in order to clean it thoroughly. s Pull the two parts A and C from the metal tube B (27). Rinse all 3 parts in warm water. If the small suction opening in part A has become blocked, you can poke it clear it with the aid of a needle.
The cleaning programme
You must carry out the cleaning programme after 250 preparations of espresso or coffee, or after 180 rinsing operations. Provided the appliance is switched on, this requirement will be announced by the glowing of the clean appliance indicator. Note: You may continue to use the appliance, however, but should carry out the cleaning programme as soon as conveniently possible. Carrying out the cleaning programme The ON/OFF indicator will glow during the cleaning programme. The clean appliance indicator will blink whilst the appliance is working and will glow when the cleaning operation is stopped. The mains plug must be inserted, but the appliance must be switched off and the selector knob for steam/hot water must be at the position.
s Start the cleaning programme by pressing the key for about 3 seconds (28). The ON/OFF, empty spent coffee holder and clean appliance indicators will glow, as will also the fill water tank indicator if there is insufficient water in the tank. s Empty the drawer and the spent coffee holder and then replace them in the appliance. If necessary, fill the water tank with water. The cleaning programme requires about 1.25 litres of water and the tank must therefore be a good 2/3 full.
s Replace the water tank in the appliance, whereby the ON/OFF and clean appliance indicators will glow and the coffee-meal indicator will blink. s Open the lid of the coffee feed funnel and drop a KRUPS cleaning tablet into the funnel. The lid must remain open during the whole of the cleaning programme (29).
s Press the key (30), whereupon the pump will take up water intermittently. After a while, the action will stop and the empty spent coffee holder indicator will glow. s Take out and empty the drawer with the spent coffee holder. Then replace these parts. The coffee-meal indicator will blink. s Press the key once again and the cleaning programme will then continue.
The empty spent coffee holder appears a further twice. After emptying the drawer, continue the cleaning programme by pressing the key. After this rinsing operation the cleaning programme is s Press the finished and all indicators will be extinguished. s Take out the drawer with the base grid and the spent coffee holder. Clean these parts in warm water and washing-up liquid. Then dry the parts and return them to the appliance. The cleaning programme takes about 15 minutes to complete. Caution! Use only KRUPS cleaning tablets. No responsibility can be taken for damage arising from the use of cleaning tablets supplied by other manufacturers. You can obtain KRUPS cleaning tablets from the KRUPS service unit. Note: If at the commencement you have too little water in the water tank, you will be warned by the glowing of the fill water tank indicator. Just add sufficient water to the tank and the cleaning process will then automatically continue. Note: If the drawer is inadvertently removed, you will be warned of its absence by the blinking of the empty spent coffee holder indicator. Just replace the drawer and the cleaning process will then automatically continue. Note: If the selector knob for steam/hot water is actuated in error, you will be warned by the blinking of the ON/OFF and steam indicators. Just return the selector knob to the position and the cleaning process will then automatically continue. Note: If during the cleaning programme the key is pressed, or if there should be a power failure, the cleaning programme must be started afresh right from the beginning. In this case you will require a second cleaning tablet.
The lime-scale removal programme
The amount of lime-scale deposited is dependent on the hardness of the water used. When it is necessary to carry out lime-scale removal, you will be warned of this when the appliance is switched on by the glowing of the remove lime-scale indicator. Note: You can continue to use the appliance, but should carry out the lime-scale removal programme as soon as conveniently possible. Caution! Use only KRUPS lime-scale removal agent or citric acid or tartaric acid. No responsibility can be taken for eventual damage arising from the use of other materials. You can obtain lime-scale removal materials from the KRUPS service unit. Do not under any circumstances use the conventional amidosulphonic acid or any materials containing such acid, as this can damage your appliance. Carefully check the composition of any lime-scale removal materials which you propose to use. Carrying out the lime-scale removal programme During the lime-scale removal process, the ON/OFF indicator will glow. The remove lime-scale indicator will blink while the appliance is working and will glow if and when the removal programme is stopped. The mains plug must be inserted, but the appliance must be switched off. The selector knob for steam/hot water must be at the position.
s Start the lime-scale removal programme by pressing the key for about 3 seconds (31). The ON/OFF, empty spent coffee holder and remove lime-scale indicators will glow, as will also the fill water tank indicator if there is no or very little water in the tank. s Empty the drawer and the spent coffee holder and return them to the appliance. s If necessary, empty the water tank.
s Dissolve 4 level tablespoonfuls (about 40 g) of the lime-scale removal material in 1/2 a litre of lukewarm water and pour the solution into the water tank. s Replace the water tank. The ON/OFF and steam indicators will blink. s Place a sufficiently large receptacle (at least 300 ml capacity) beneath the steam pipe.
s Turn the selector knob for steam/hot water to the position (32). The de-scaling solution will be pumped intermittently through the steam nozzle. When the steam system is de-scaled, the empty spent coffee holder indicator will glow. s Take out and empty the drawer with the spent coffee holder. Then replace these parts. The ON/OFF and steam indicators will blink.
s Turn the selector knob for steam/hot water to the position. The de-scaling process will now continue and the de-scaling solution will run intermittently into the drawer. s When the fill water tank and empty spent coffee holder glow, rinse out the water tank thoroughly. Fill the tank with fresh water (at least 1 litre a good half tankful) and return it to the appliance. s Remove the drawer, empty it and return it to the appliance. The ON/OFF and steam indicators will blink. s Place a sufficiently large receptacle (at least 300 ml capacity) below the steam nozzle (32). s Turn the selector knob for steam/hot water to the position (32).
