Kyocera FS-9530DN 51ppm Sum-up: An excellent model that straddles the line between departmental and high-volume markets. Unlike the high-volume printer models from some of the companys copier competitors, Kyoceras new FS9530DN is not derived from a digital copier at all. Like its predecessor, FS9520DN (sold but no longer manufactured), this machine was developed to serve as a printer from the beginning. It is, in fact, a close rival of the HP LaserJet 9050-series printers. The new model gives Kyocera monochrome printer models running from 17ppm to 51ppm. Kyocera has been making laser printers with strong features and value for years, and this 51ppm machine is simply an extension of its FS series. In fact, the 40ppm FS-9130DN is based on the same architecture. The FS-9530DNs features, however, have a number of important differences. The FS-9530DN has a higher maximum paper capacity, at 4,200 sheets, and offers an optional finisher with hole punching, as well as a booklet maker with saddlestitcher. This model starts with standard Ethernet and duplexing. Expanded brainpower is the key upgrade Kyoceras implemented in this new model. It features 128MB of memory standard (double the 64MB standard memory of the FS-9520DN), and that can be expanded to 640MB. A 40GB hard disk is available as well, which is also twice the size of the 9520DNs optional 20GB disk. The FS-9530DN is a very durable, full-featured unit. Best of all, its priced to compete with the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 9050, its big rival. The comparable HP version is the LaserJet 9050dn, which offers duplexing and network connectivity, just like the Kyocera model (the base model lacks networking and duplexing). In some areas, the two machines are very similar. They both have roughly equivalent standard paper supplies (1,200 sheets for Kyocera versus 1,100 sheets for HP) and standard output capacities (500 versus 600 sheets). Kyocera offers more optional input capacity you can add 3,000 more sheets, as opposed to HPs 2,000. Both models offer optional 3,000-sheet finishers, but only Kyocera offers a book-

Both models are rated as having the same duty cycle, but we think, based on other Kyocera models (with their durable drum technology), that the cost-per-page advantage goes to Kyocera, by a significant margin. That may make the Kyocera unit a better buy, even with a higher sticker price. Of course, Hewlett-Packard has more add-on software and more easily available supplies. It also has an incredibly strong brand, even though Kyocera has an excellent reputation among those who really know printers. We are impressed with the way the Kyocera FS-9530DN can stand toe-totoe with the solid LaserJet 9050 series and with Xeroxs 50ppm Phaser 5500 family. Prior to the takeover of Mita, Kyocera had marketed its laser printers in the United States through its Georgia-based sales organization. In 2000, though, the Kyocera printer operation was relocated to Mitas facilities in New Jersey, and the two printer product lines were combined.
