Kyocera Mita KM-4530 2,500 sheet dual paper supply
Among 45ppm network printers, mailboxes are not unusual but the Kyocera Mita KM-4530 may have an edge with its 5 bin mailbox because it can run in conjunction with the Kyocera Mita KM-4530's booklet-maker and/or stacking-finisher plus it accepts both stapled and hole punched documents (in copy and print mode). The mailbox finisher can be added to either Kyocera Mitas multifunctional or basic finisher. In contrast most copier-printers are limited to virtual mailboxes where you send a print job to the print engine and then have to walk to the printer and enter a security code before your job prints. From a security perspective, virtual mailboxes can be useful but they are a drain on productivity. For example, with Kyocera Mitas mailboxes, you can assign your own mailbox so that your documents are routed into your mailbox ready for collection. This means that it does not matter how long it takes for the user to go and collect the document(s) because it will be there waiting in the selected mailbox when printed. In contrast - if you send a document to a virtual mailbox you have no guarantee that the printer will be free when you get to it. Assuming the printer is free, you would still have to stand by the printer and wait for the job to print after you have keyed your code in to access a virtual mailbox. On many occasions the printer will be busy, therefore, all you achieve by entering your print code is that your job is placed into the current print queue - if you are 7th in the print queue you could be at the printer for some time. Having the option to promote your own work ahead of other peoples work is no aid to productivity either; because while it may move your job up the queue it will be at the expense of another users productivity. Kyocera Mita KM-4530 Design enhancements promoted by Kyocera Mita include: The use of additional sheet metal, conductive resin and an electro-static erasing brush to reduce paper jams Redesigned duplex unit to prevent paper separating from the roller User adjustable de-curling mechanism in the finisher, to stop paper curl & linked jams. Rigid frame (laser welded piping) to restrict movement / sway and stop frame distortion during printing (movement / sway is a common cause of phantom jams in copiers). 3 strikes and out paper jam system; the new Kyocera Mita KM-4530 attempts to feed each sheet of paper 3 times before registering a paper jam. This can reduce the number of jams that are caused by over sensitive jam sensors. JBIG compression for scanned documents. JBIG is a compression technology developed for fax machines. BERTL tests have established that JBIG compression is efficient when documents contain graphical elements. In BERTLs Fax tests, most JBIG compression based fax machines have stored around 20% more pages into memory than non JBIG systems. This should assist the Kyocera Mita KM-4530's copy document storage capacity. Variable Dot Size. Kyocera Mita advise that the KM-5230 used to have uniform sized dots. In contrast, the new Kyocera Mita KM-4530 uses a similar technique to color laser copiers by varying the dot size of the toner. This is claimed to improve image quality and remove the risk of moire / screen clash while improving image quality on grey scales and graduations. 400Mhz controller versus 166Mhz on the previous KM-4230/5230 models. PowerPC 750cx versus PowerPC 603e
Advertised page life of the Kyocera Mita KM-4530's OPC based photoconductor drum is 400,000 impressions. The cera in Kyocera comes from ceramics because Kyocera have a long pedigree in the ceramics industry; this led to their introduction of long life ceramic based photoconductors - which in turn was the reason for their original entry into the printer market. When comparing to most 45ppm copiers and printers the Kyocera Mita long life drum and bulk toner delivers substantially greater longevity.

PRINT FUNCTIONALITY
Environment: Network connection was via 100BaseT TCP/IP to a Windows XP computer. Printer tests were conducted on the Kyocera Mita Extended Driver version 1.5.1210, with firmware level 72.04.01-3CW. The Kyocera Mita KM-4530 was configured with 32,768KB Printer RAM and its standard 400Mhz processer / print controller. The optional hard disk was not installed. Setup: There is one large central LCD touch screen control panel on the copier / printer engine. This is used to change IP addresses and manage the print queue locally. BERTL found the installation to be very simple with no problems noted. Print Driver(s) / Driver Options: The print function of the Kyocera Mita KM-4530 ships with 3 standard page description languages: KPDL, PCL5e and PCL XL. PCL5e is self explanatory and may be the choice of most network/IT managers. KPDL is Kyocera Mitas own PostScript emulation, while PCL-XL is Kyocera Mitas own PCL emulation. When loading the print driver from the manufacturers CD you do not get the choice of which driver to load; the set up routine installs all three drivers wrapped in one package. Kyocera Mita promote their three driver install as a benefit for users but BERTL was not 100% convinced. In their favor Kyocera Mita provides the PostScript driver free of charge while competitors charge as much for a PostScript option / upgrade as others charge for a network printer! Kyocera Mitas approach delivers two levels of driver capability (PCL 5e is fast but lacks functionality - proprietary drivers are slower but include more functionality). Within the KPDL and PCL-XL drivers mixed media is supported (although it is obscurely labelled under settings the KPDL and PCL XL drivers offer covers mode and page insertion). This allowed BERTL to choose a front or front and back cover with levels allowing us to print on the front outside, front inside, back inside or back outside as well as to choose the paper source for the cover. BERTL could also do page insertion and select the pages and paper tray to feed from, which we wanted to insert before (i.e., pages 1, 9, 15); we could also choose to print on the front or the back cover. This functionality is useful in many offices. However, when choosing PCL5e driver, we had no support for mixed media - the Settings button, which opens advanced media settings, vanished). Further differences between the drivers could be seen in the productivity speeds where the generic PCL5e driver ran faster than Kyocera Mitas proprietary PCL-XL driver.

Cluster / Tandem Printing: Cluster printing is possible with either two Kyocera Mita KM-4530 units or a mixture of the Kyocera Mita KM-4530 and a KM-5530 (obviously you require at least two compatible print engines to use this function on any device). Print speeds in tandem printing mode made it worthwhile using the tandem print function. The Kyocera Mita print driver / software split print jobs in two and sent half the copies to each printer. Job Rerouting and Recovery: Within the Kyocera Mita KM-4530, BERTL found no job reroute on fail capability (i.e.: where you can redirect work from a failed printer to a working printer around the network). However, it is worth noting that this capability is now a standard feature of print pooling / cluster printing within Windows XP (client software) as well as Windows NT and Windows 2000 server. BERTL set print pooling to operate within the Windows XP print driver controls. BERTL was able to set up two, or more, printers (i.e. two Kyocera Mita KM-4530 printers or a mix of one 55ppm Kyocera Mita KM-5530 and one 45ppm Kyocera Mita KM-4530) as a print pool. When the first printer was busy, documents sent to it were diverted and printed at the second printer. When the first printer was offline, jobs were also rerouted to the second printer. Also part of the standard Windows XP operating system is notification upon fail. This flashes up a warning on the users PC screen to advise them that their print job has not completed (details of the job are included in the message).

Network Management System: Included within the standard price of the printer function of Kyocera Mita KM-4530 printer option are two means of monitoring and managing the device across the network: (1) LAN based and (2) Browser based. KM-Net Viewer: LAN based software Remote Viewer: Browser based network utility for devices including the resident web server. The functionality of the two utilities is effectively identical and provides users and administrators with extensive control over the device. Both network tools work by monitoring the SNMP (Standard Network Management Protocol) data sent via the network card whenever the devices status changes. This allows the utilities to also monitor devices from other manufacturers, most of which standardize on SNMP. The level of monitoring available on third party devices will depend upon the amount of information sent by the network card in standard SNMP format, and the amount sent in a proprietary format designed only for use with the manufacturers own network utility. KM Net Viewer: The LAN based KM-Net Viewer offers greater flexibility for the administrator than the web based solution because it allows them to monitor all devices around the network at a glance. The browser based utility is restricted to monitoring one device at a time via the devices TCP/IP address and resident web server. Using KM-Net Viewer we could set up groups of printers that we wished to monitor (see right), and filter the list further by stipulating certain status conditions (list devices indicating a problem). This allows an IT manager to see a panoramic view of which devices require attention. Kyocera Mita use a color coding system to signify the status level of the device. Red indicates the device is offline, Yellow indicates the device will need attention soon and Blue is online with no problems. By double clicking on a specific device we could look at the device status and management features Kyocera Mita Net Viewer Home Page listing all devices in greater detail. The information available on the device was split into 9 separate tabs. An interesting feature within the KM-Net Viewer is its ability to broadcast information to multiple printers around the network. The broadcast can take one of two forms: (1) Text: Users can type text into the box. The text line will then be printed at any printer selected within the broadcast. (2) File: Users can send a PostScript or PCL file directly to all the printers in the broadcast list.
Initial Report 18 Mar 2002 Business Equipment Research & Test Laboratories Kyocera Mita KM-4530 Page 8 of 17 USA Fax: (1) 2312 Europe Fax: 44 (0) 998 e-mail: LabCheck@BERTL.com
This feature can be useful for distributing information around the company. However, it should be remembered that a user sending a large print file to a large number of printers at the same time may cause a sizable bandwidth peak, which could cause other network problems. Browser Based Network Management: In addition to being able to monitor devices around the network, using KM-Net Viewer, BERTL was also able to look at an individual devices status via standard internet browsers by browsing to the resident web server (not available on all Kyocera Mita products). By typing in the TCP/IP address of the printer / multi-functional device, BERTL could see virtually all the same information that was available via the LAN based KM-Net Viewer. On the initial Status page BERTL could see the main device settings, firmware, toner level and paper stocks and type in each of the drawers. Two noteworthy points within the web server were: 1) The ability to reprint jobs stored at the hard drive. This worked in the same way as the Job Manager LAN based utility, with users able to select a specific print file and reprint a single copy of the document. Within the Send Data tab we were also able to send text or a PostScript / PCL file directly to the printer across the internet.
PDF/TIFF Direct Printing: Unlike some network printers and copier-printer multi functionals, the Kyocera Mita KM-4530 has no capability to directly print/transfer acrobat PDF or TIFF (tagged image file format) files for direct printing. When available, this feature is handy because it allows a small PDF or TIFF file to be transferred via the LAN or TCP/IP from a remote terminal as raw PDF. Upon arrival at the print engine, the processor rasterizes/processes the PDF/TIFF and prints the document. This differs from standard print processes where the user produces a PCL or Postscript print data file at their computer which is then transferred across the network to be rasterized/printed by the remote printer. IP Address/Internet Printing: This capability is supported on the Kyocera Mita KM-4530. At time of report this capability is available on some dedicated network printers and multi functional devices; though it is not yet common. Since the introduction of Windows XP this function may be less value because XP includes print to IP address in the standard print options. Resident Web Server: The Kyocera Mita KM-4530's resident web server is used as an administrative tool which allows virtually all system/configuration settings, which can be viewed or changed through the control panel, to be accessed and changed remotely via an internet browser. In this respect the functionality was reasonable. However, several manufacturers have more advanced resident web server capabilities which offer greater control and diagnostic information for remote users. For the majority of potential purchasers of the Kyocera Mita KM-4530 the functionality is adequate.

Print speeds on the Kyocera Mita KM-4530 blazed no trails on standard work but outpaced a number of competing systems when the print processor was heavily taxed with a stream of network print jobs, including graphical content (see Network Load Test). There were minor differences between PCL XL (Kyocera Mitas PCL emulation) and KPDL (Kyocera Mitas PostScript emulation). The most productive / fastest print speeds were measured from the native PCL 5e print driver.
Kyocera Mita KM-4530 Printer Productivity Table All speeds expressed in pages per minute (ppm)

Once the Kyocera Mita KM-4530 had processed and printed the first set of a document, the speed of additional sets increased. Booklet Making: The Kyocera Mita KM-4530 supports an optional automatic saddle stitching, folding, booklet maker which can be installed with the mailbin unit. The output stacking capacity of the booklet maker finisher is similar to other 45ppm devices and varies depending on the size of the booklet produced. You can save up to 40 thin booklets (up to 5 sheets of paper folded - 20 images) and down to around 15 thicker booklets (16 sheets of paper folded - 64 images). Making a booklet from the PC screen worked reasonably well but did not have intuitive settings (it took several attempts to get the correct booklet). The Kyocera Mita KM-4530's booklet maker should serve most offices reasonably well.

Scan to email / Network: If connected to the network the Kyocera Mita KM-4530 can be used as a fax like communication device via its push scanning capabilities. By push we mean that you can scan documents (single sided, duplex and large sizes) from the platen or document feeder direct to an e-mail address, or PC. This differs from several copier printers which either had no scanning capability or have a pull scanning approach. By pull scanning we mean that the files are stored on the local hard drive of the third party copier leaving the network user to return to their desk, browse to the hard drive of the copier and pull the document back to their hard drive before being able to use it. To use the Kyocera Mita KM-4530 as a scanner, BERTL pressed the SCAN button on the control panel and was offered options labeled: Send E-Mail Scan to PC Twain
Kyocera Mita KM-4530's main scanner menu
The Kyocera Mita KM-4530 can store up to 100 one touch e-mail addresses in its internal address book via a keyboard in the copier control panel. Kyocera Mita advise that they have utility, supplied with the scan system, which allows an administrator to automatically transfer a contact list into the Kyocera Mita KM-4530; this makes the updating and set up of additional devices around the network a much less user intensive process. Kyocera Mita KM-4530's scan-to-Email key pad There is a small LCD touchscreen QWERTY keypad which let BERTL send documents to ad-hoc email addresses as required. From these touch screens, BERTL could also send either a CC / visible copy (ie: all parties see the list of who was sent the email) or a BC / blind copy. The blind copy capability is a useful feature which is not found on some third party units. User Friendly Scan documents: The Kyocera Mita KM-4530 provides a reasonable document sending system. The system administrator sets the subject line and the body of the message within the resident web server which is accessed across the Internet. The subject line and the message body text can be critical deciding factors as to whether the receiving party reads or deletes the e-mail and attachment. The more personal the message the more likely the receiver is to consider it to be safe rather than to being a virus. A nice touch on the scanning option is the ability to send documents as either multipage, Group 4 MMR TIFF or Acrobat PDF. This differs from some scanning systems which can only support TIFF format. Readers will appreciate that Acrobat format is more widely acceptable to the average person receiving the e-mail. Like most scanning systems, you can choose the DPI and send documents directly to PCs (subject to having entered the PC details via the templates). Because the scanner doubles up as the copier document feeder, BERTL could use similar image editing options to the copier (ie: border erase, image rotate, page separation, etc.) Twain Scanning: Twain scanning Is possible via the Kyocera Mita KM-4530. Users must have a twain compliant application on their PC and can then place documents on the scanner, or document feeder, and pull them across the network to their local PC. This works reasonably well but has the same limitation as a number of copier based systems which use a black and white monochrome scanner (namely it does not offer the range of uses available with a color scanner). The scanner system can be managed remotely using any Internet browser. This works in the same way as the printers resident web server. Fax Capability: There is no fax capability. If fax is essential there are a number of internet based services that let users send email direct to telephone numbers / fax for a low cost (in the form 17327612312@XYZ.com - where 17327612312 is the fax number and XYZ.com is the email-to-fax service provider. This is often cheaper than adding a fax capability.

COPIER FUNCTIONALITY
The Kyocera Mita KM-4530 has a standard 128MB copy memory and 20GB hard disk drive (HDD is claimed to hold 81,920 USA letter size pages at 6%). There are 9 job reserve memories which means that you queue up to 9 copy jobs into the print queue. However, like a number of digital copier-printers these job reserves are used for both copy or print jobs. If you have 8 print jobs in the queue, there will only be one copy memory slot left free for walk up copier users until the current print job clears and frees one of the nine memories. The Kyocera Mita KM-4530 has a 45ppm print engine coupled with a 100 sheet copier document feeder which scans at 50 originals per minute. The 100 sheet feeder is not unusual at this level of the market though it is one of the highest around. The 50opm document feeder speed should help with copier productivity because images are being fed into the print processor faster than the engine can print them. Noteworthy on the Kyocera Mita KM-4530 is the fact that printing of most copied documents starts while the originals are still being scanned. This is preferential to some digital copiers which have to scan the entire document into memory prior to processing and printing any pages. Most of the digital copier functionality is similar to that found on several modern competitors. Copier Document production capabilities include: A novel copy mode was Notes / Memo copying which merged multiple images onto a single sheet of paper and produced a blank area where notes could be hand written. This could be useful for presentations and training where the material is not suitable to be printed from electronic files. Cover Mode enabled BERTL to select a separate paper stock for front and or back pages - with the added option of either printing on or leaving the covers blank. Insert and Chapter Mode. Via Electronic Job Build users can build documents with front and back covers and virtually an unlimited number of sheet inserts, simplexed or duplex. Job Build also enables the user to specify which paper sources can be used for covers and inserts resulting in a document with covers on a heavy stock, inserts onto 2 different color stock and the body of the document on white. Job Build allowed us to create documents larger than the document feeder capacity, combine documents scanned via the document feeder and platen, combine different sized originals and specify simplex and duplex printing within one batch build process. Overlay Mode enabled us to add a background image at a selected density level behind the primary text. Page Numbering gave a choice of three styles and locations. However, there was no date/time stamp capability as found on some other units. This capability is only available in the copier function which poses no problem because the Kyocera Mita KM-4530 can not automatically combine copy and print jobs in its document management functions. Booklet making lets you take multiple single sheets of paper and convert them into a saddle-stitched, folded, magazine style booklet. This function was not as simple as BERTL would have liked. To produce the booket you press the Booklet button on the main LCD screen (circled in the control panel screen shot on next page) which takes you to a sub menu. The imposition / layout for a booklet is automatic but we did not find the paper layout and size options logical; we kept getting the size wrong. However, once mastered this should pose no problem. Tandem Copy joins two Kyocera Mita KM-4530 to produce a maximum copy speed of 90cpm (or you can join one Kyocera Mita KM4530 with a KM-5530 for 100cpm). You press the Tandem option on the main copier control panel (circled in the control panel screen shot on next page) and scan the originals into the master copier. The job is scanned into memory, processed and then both print engines / copiers started printing simultaneously. Tandem copy split the job in half (i.e. 20 sets in tandem mode sent 10 sets to each printer).
Some alternative tandem copy systems claim to improve productivity by splitting the jobs according to the speed of the target print engine. In theory both print engines should finish the job at the same time. The theory sounds great but in BERTL tests it has never worked and has always been counter productive.

The problem is that to split 50 sets of a 50 page document between a 45ppm and a 55ppm engine requires a split of 40.90% of the pages to one engine and 59.10% to the other engine but this equates to 20.45 sets to one copier and 24.55 sets to the other. Typically, the software splits either 20 to the slower engine or 21 to the faster engine. The productivity gain from splitting is also watered down because while the math of the split calculates against 45ppm and 55ppm but the actual delivery speed of the final printed booklets is far slower (due to stapling times, folding times, imposition and processing times). In BERTL tests, no significant advantage has been measured on tandem copier systems that intelligentlysplit jobs between different speed engines. The bottom line was that BERTL found the Kyocera Mita KM-4530 tandem copy system simpler to copy with because we knew that we had half of each job in each copier rather than a mixture of different numbers of pages in each devices output tray, depending upon job and document length.

Section 508 (Disabled friendly): There seemed to be no special provision for Section 508 / disabled access on the Kyocera Mita KM-4530. In some ways it was comparable to other copiers with the qualification that the mailbin unit sits on top of the device and, possibly, could not be reached from a wheelchair. Keep this in context though; no other comparable unit has the advantage of this type of mailbox capability. Control Panel: The copier control panel follows the same basic design as other Kyocera Mita copiers and is generally on par with most digital copiers. It uses a tab system with graphical touch screen menus to navigate around the copy, and other, functionality. Around the LCD touch screen are 9 physical (not LCD screen) buttons for Copier, Printer, Scanner, Fax, Document Management, Job Queue, Repeat Copy, Job Build and Auto Selection. When you want to use the Scanner, you just press the scanner button and the LCD screen switches to scanner settings (similar applies when you press copy, print or fax buttons. Users can customize the control panel to place commonly used features on the main screen / tab for simpler operation.

A limitation of the Kyocera Mita KM-4530's copier control panel was that you have to go several layers / tabs and buttons deep to set up some functions. Each menu was relatively easy to follow but BERTL sometimes had to follow a trail of menus to set up some copy jobs. Balancing this out was the fact that you can start copying from any screen.

The Kyocera Mita KM-4530's finishing capability was especially productive when using its stapling and hole punching finisher(s). In some instances the overall jobs were faster than measured on some devices sold for copy speeds between 70 ppm to 105 ppm.

This productivity advantage was gained via the efficiency of the finishing options which is demonstrated in the next table.

However, the speed advantage of the advanced finishing was not present on standard copying applications. On single sided standard copy work, the Kyocera Mita KM-4530 was reasonable but did not stand out from its competitors.

Copy Image Quality: On solid blacks and standard text the Kyocera Mita KM-4530 delivered crisp solid images. Black density was measured at 1.31 which is close to as black as you can get from a copier. The ability to print fine lines was also very high and we measured 6.3 using the ISO DIN standard, once again a measurement of 6.3 is close to the best you can get from a copier. Resolution was measured at between 60 and 70 using ISO DIN 19 051, this is good but not the highest seen. A rough translation of the above measurements / techno-speak is that the Kyocera Mita KM-4530 can produce good blacks and reproduce fine detail well. Where BERTL found the Kyocera Mita KM-4530 slightly weak was on its ability to replicate grey shades. All grey shades were produced with a grainy effect (grey mixed with white show-through). This noticed more on lighter shades because the greys looked more like speckling with the lightest grey colors missed completely. On screen printed documents some grey shades had screen clash / moire. Bear in mind that when BERTL refers to grey shades - this includes colored originals that are reproduced in grey on the monochrome copier.

COPIER PRINT ON DEMAND / DOCUMENT STORE AND REPRINT
The Kyocera Mita KM-4530 includes a number of document management options which use its 20GB hard drive (the hard drive is part of the standard feature set). BERTL found that these were reasonably functional and relatively simply to use. By pressing the Document Management button, on the copier control panel, BERTL was presented with the Select Function screen. There were three document management options available to choose between. Form Box Mode: Users store commonly used forms here for access within the Forms Overlay function. Shared Data Box: Users can store documents here which are for public sharing. To enter a document into the Shared Data Box BERTL pressed Document reg which presented a keypad screen to enter a file name and username (both could be up to 16 characters). Having named the document, BERTL was able to set scanning criteria for the document. To retrieve a job stored within the Shared Data Box BERTL pressed Document Printing on the keypad. All jobs are stored within the Kyocera Mita KM-4530's single Shared Data Box and there is a feature which lets the user sort documents by date, user name or document name. Once the document is selected, you can set up printfinishing (ie: duplex, staple, etc) before sending the job to print.

Document Management Main Selection Screen
From the Shared Data Box you can not merge two or more saved documents to produce a single print job. Data stored within the Shared Data box remains on the hard drive until deleted. Synergy Print Box Mode: The Synergy Print Box works like the Shared Data Box but offers additional functionality such as: print job storage, merging of multiple stored documents and PIN access security protection. The Synergy Print Box is split into 100 user boxes. (See image 4 jobs selected for printing from a Synergy Print Box to right). Each user can allocate a security PIN number to their box to prevent unauthorized access of / to confidential documents. Documents are stored by walk up users in the same way as the Shared Data Box. Print users can also send jobs to a synergy print box number via the Kyocera Mita KM-4530 print driver. Each stored job can be set with a life span of between 1 and 7 days (before deletion) or saved as permanent files that are not deleted - unless manually removed via the control panel or the network management utility. The major advantage of the Synergy Print Box is its ability to merge numerous documents into a single print job.
