GROUP TEST / 26IN LCD TVS LG 26LC55
Approx price 390
WHILE IT MIGHT be tempting to remortgage the house and splash out on the biggest atscreen that will t through your door or window, the chances are that youll be better off with one of these 26in sets. The tellies on test here are large enough to do justice to the most epic movies, but are sufciently compact to t into just about any normal-sized front room. This is also the size at which having a high-denition resolution starts to make sense: any smaller and the extra detail tends to be imperceptible, while every one of these sets shows a marked step up in quality from standard DVDs to Blu-ray discs or top-quality broadcasts. Every set is, of course, equipped with a built-in Freeview tuner in readiness for the big switchover, while each also carries an oldfashioned analogue decoder for anyone not yet able to avail themselves of the new broadcasting system. Another standard tting is a brace of HDMIs apiece to handle all your digital needs. So if youre in the market for a sensibly sized, well-specied and eminently affordable set, take your pick from this selection.
Stylish in matt black and with a very slick user system, the LG has the look and feel of a very classy set. Youll be up and running within minutes of getting it out of its box and the picture is highly watchable with just about every sort of source. The LC55 occasionally aspires to plasma-like naturalism, with a colour palette that is capable of great restraint, which works wonderfully well with more subtle material. Although it is arguably short of a drop of blockbusting, retinascorching pizzazz. The only real problems with a generally highly enjoyable performance are a dose of the usual LCD motion judders and an occasional slightly weedy black level performance, due in part to a rather intrusive backlight.

This is the cheapest set in the group and it shows, but not nearly so glaringly as you might think. The build quality might be a little ropey and the remote diabolical, but on paper (and bar the odd fancy image engine) there is little to choose between the Finlux and other, more

prestigious brands, and the performance doesnt lag too far behind, either. In fact, the Freeview pictures are the equal of, if not superior to, the Samsungs and this sets DVD and high-denition performances are also pretty watchable. Purists might nd the picture a little crude in some ways (movement can be pretty jerky and blacks lack presence), but generally speaking, this is a competent set for a reasonable price.
Samsung squares up to its fellow Korean and longtime nemesis, LG, with a similarly handsome set and just a tenner between them. The LE26R87BDX is one of the most comprehensively connected sets in this test with no fewer than three stereo inputs and an optical output for

amplifying Freeview broadcasts. It also boasts Samsungs successful DNIe image engine and just about makes decent use of it. The set is ne with DVD and HD material, putting in a punchy, vibrant performance with plenty of detail. The big stumbling block is Freeview, which looks pretty atrocious, with conspicuous ghosting and motion blurring, and does some serious damage to its credentials as an everyday, family TV.

Sony makes a brave aesthetic departure from regulation black slinkiness with this unusually chunky, gun-metal set. The user system isnt as slick as the LG or Samsung sets, but its still pretty simple to use, and it doesnt take much effort to arrive at an extremely attractive picture.

The Freeview performance easily outclasses everything bar the Panasonics and the results with DVD and highdenition video are excellent. The Bravia electronics do a ne job with colours, delivering one of the most natural palettes youll see underpinned by solid black levels and some of the best motion handling in this test. The fact that its only 380 is the icing on a generally impressive cake.
Panasonic has been the LCD manufacturer to beat in group tests for some time and this 26in upholds that enviable tradition in ne style. Possibly the most handsome and certainly the best equipped TV here, the 26LMD70A is the best all-round package here by a

head. It beats the Samsung and LG for user-friendliness, shades the Sony on picture nesse and, if you combine all that and consider them in terms of its price, offers better value than the Finlux. Its easily the most comfortable set with Freeview, DVD looks sharp and dynamic, and high-denition material is as richly detailed as youll see on a 26in set. Add to that audio that destroys the rest of the eld and you have a clear group winner.
This is quite a difcult group to judge as the ve TVs all hail from a fairly narrow band of pricing and specication. Every set is HD Ready with a native resolution of 1,355 x 768 pixels, every one has a pair of HDMIs to its credit, and the most expensive is still in the same general bracket as the most affordable. There were a few reasonably obvious markers of difference, though, with build quality being the most readily apparent and the presence (or absence) of a sophisticated picture processing engine on the spec sheet being another. It is absolute performance and value that ultimately earns sets stars, though, and while it was a closely fought group, we were able to pick out a couple of overall winners.
The nal analysis
Coming in last, through no real major fault of its own, is the Finlux. We liked the companys unpretentious take on a frillfree family set so wed still recommend the 26FLD760 to anyone looking for a cheap, serviceable telly. The LG and Samsung were just slicker in most departments, particularly setup and everyday use. These were both outclassed by the Sony, though, which gave them a lesson in picture naturalism and managed to do so for less money than either the LG or Samsung. The Panasonic, though, did everything better than every other set, and you cant really ask for more than that now, can you?Z
