The once-a-year opportunity to showcase and celebrate local volunteers is offered again, with nominations having opened for the TrustPower Waipa District Community Awards. The Awards, which are run in conjunction with Waipa District Council, are open to all voluntary groups and organisations working for the benefit of the region. Waipa residents are being encouraged to put forward names of voluntary groups helping keep community spirit alive. It is up to everyone in the community to support these humble heroes by nominating them for some well deserved recognition. Waipa Mayor Alan Livingston encourages community, service and sporting organisations to apply for projects or services that they have carried out. These awards are a great way for the wider community also to recognise these groups and celebrate their special achievements, says Mayor Livingston. This is the ninth year the awards are being held in the Waipa District. Since the TrustPower Community Awards began in the region, TrustPower has given away more than $40,000 in prize money to the winning voluntary groups at the Awards. This year more than $5,000 prize money is up for grabs. There are a huge number of voluntary organisations who contribute their time, effort and energy to strengthen this community. This is your chance to turn the spotlight onto those that usually work behind the scenes. Anyone can nominate a voluntary group or organisation for the TrustPower Waipa District Community Awards groups can even nominate themselves. Last year 42 nominations were received in this region, but there are many more groups still to be recognised. TrustPower Community Relations Representative Teresa Partridge says that everyone knows a deserving voluntary organisation that makes an outstanding contribution to their community. The awards cover five categories; Heritage and Environment, Health and Wellbeing, Arts and Culture, Sport and Leisure, and Educational and Child/Youth Development. Category winners receive $500, runners-up receive $250 and the Supreme Winner will take home $1,500 and an allexpenses paid trip to the TrustPower National Community Awards. Nomination Forms for the TrustPower Community Awards are available from the Council offices or service centre. Nomination Forms can also be downloaded from the website www.trustpower.co.nz/communityawards. Nominations close on Friday 15 May, so get nominating today!

JUST AMBLIN walking team after completing the Great Lake Relay in Taupo, from left, front row: Logan Parker, Leslie Clayton-Green, Alison Murray, Heather Smyth, Joanne Knapp; back row: Dieter Meredith, Colin Murray, Julie Meredith, Joanne Parker, Debbie Pilkington, Emma Coleman.
Te Awamutu team Just Amblin are no slouches when it comes to the annual Great Lake Relay. Competing for the ninth time in the 14 year history of the event, the 10-strong local team once again finished in the top 10 and were fifth overall out of 30 teams walking the 160km round Lake Taupo in 19h 02m 04s. Team spokesperson, Alison Murray says the weather improved considerably from the heavy rain which covered the country leading up to the event. Through the night there were some heavy showers but Saturday dawned perfectly and remained so until the finish. Not too hot favourable for all the athletes. Renowned as the ultimate team building event, the Great Lake Relay sees teams of 10 to 18 members running or walking to complete the 18 legs around the course, ranging in distance from 5.2km to 14.4km. With over 5000 registered amateur and professional runners from all over Australasia taking part in the race each year, it is the biggest event of its type in the Southern Hemisphere. While there are prizes awarded to the winners of the relay, and $150,000 worth of spot prizes given away, Murray says most of the runners/walkers take part just for the joy of team building and participating. Just Amblin was one of three Te Awamutu teams to enter this year. The Rosetown Ramblers running team covered the 160km in 14:42.28, placing 119th out of 157 entries. In the section for composite teams, Te Awamutu Vetrunarians placed 56th out of 136 entries in 17:32.40.

Bring the boat, Big learning curve for premier rugby debutants the family & friends
There is no substitute for experience in the hotbed of Waikato premier club rugby. Ecolab Te Awamutu Sports had more than a handful of key players unavailable for their season opener against Hamilton Old Boys at Albert Park on Saturday, causing a host of new players, with little or no experience at this level, to step up. It proved to be a bit of a rude awakening for some of them against a vastly more experienced Hamilton Old Boys outfit, who romped home 44-7. Peter Bain reports that Sports were immediately under pressure after failing to clear their line from the kickoff. The visitors made them pay the ultimate price by scoring an early seven pointer. Led superbly by Waikato representative David Faville at open side flanker, Hamilton OB dominated both possession and territory to run in four first half tries through Chris Ames, Mark Toka, Marty Faville and Cliff Blair to lead 27-7. Sports only points came just before the break when, after applying concerted forward pressure on the Old Boys line, second five Thomas Bird showed his class with a pin-point accurate cross-kick behind the
