Optimal Battery Management Using Iterative Dynamic Programming
Smart Building Technologies Description: The increasing number of renewables power plants such as wind generators requires more and more balancing energy to stabilize the electric grid. In addition, ten percent of the infrastructure costs of the power grids are spent to meet peak demand. Pump storage hydro power plants or gas-fired power plants are commonly used to control the grid frequency. As the battery technology has improved significantly, the usage of battery system to store energy may become a promising solution in future. In this project, iterative dynamic programming is used to find optimal operation strategies for such a system. A variable price scenario is considered to optimize the charging and discharging phases. Additionally a battery health model is included to account for the degradation of the battery system.

Optimal Room Automation

Smart Building Technologies Description: The optimal control of building services for room conditioning is a challenging task. To reduce the operating cost, the controller must guarantee energy-efficient operation of all devices while respecting the comfort demand of the occupants. In addition, many disturbances such as solar gains, open windows or user interactions complicate the control task. Model-predictive control techniques are a promising solution to solve this challenge. In this project, an energy-efficient room automation controller is derived. First, an accurate model of the room based on a previous thesis is implemented. Then, the controller is tested in our office ML K40.1. Therefore, a hardware solution to solve the control task is implemented.
