The Ty Crawshay Building at the University of Glamorgan is an old grade 2 listed building within the Treforest campus outside Cardiff.The building was to be completely renovated back to its original splendour and used as a facility for the School of Law. The university invited companies to tender for the supply of an integrated AV system linking the rooms to a main lecture theatre / mock courtroom.
The requirement stipulated that a number of rooms within the building should be linked to the courtroom as interview rooms able to interact with the court. The method and technology employed was left open to suggestion and tenders were invited to employ their expertise to suggest the appropriate specification and method. Roche Audio Visual quickly identified that the best way forward for this project was to utilise video conferencing equipment over a dedicated network. Although not the cheapest of options, it provided an easy to use method from both the end user and installation point of view. Control of the courtroom cameras from any room meant that the network would also need to cope with a control systems requirement. could link the court to any of the interview rooms located around the building. The interview rooms had either Sony PCS-G50 systems or the PCS-TL33 all-in-one system. All the units had the built in address books pre-programmed with the associated room details to allow quick & simple connection to any system. It needed to have a wide variety of AV equipment within it The room also needed to double up as a lecture theatre so the equipment and method of controlling it needed to be flexible. A Crestron integrated control system with large touch screen interface was provided as the main point of control, with further touch screens located in the interview rooms for additional control.
Roche Audio Visuals in house programmers provided a simple to use graphical interface for end user control of the system. The main system rack was pre assembled and configured at Roches Elland workshops with fine tuning and final configuration done on site. Roche engineers installed all elements of the system including the dedicated network over a 3-week period. The final test was to meet a strict handover deadline whilst working alongside other contractors. The good working relationship Roche had with the client and main contractor helped to produce a state of the art system the law school can benefit from for years to come.
