Upside to pool complex
In response to Cindy Bennetts letter re Te Awamutu Events Centre pool, I would like to put some positive points of view from someone who has, also, used the pool regularly since its opening. Because of foot and knee problems I am no longer able to walk very far, so being able to swim and exercise in the pool has kept me mobile for the past few years. I have never contracted any health problems from the pool and frequently observe quite rigorous cleaning by the staff. The water has never looked dirty to me, though the uctuating temperatures are a challenge. I would also like to comment on the positive parenting I see going on at the pool. As a keen observer of children and their parents, I am impressed. These people also seem not to be aware of or worried by the alleged lack of cleanliness at the facility. Im sure they would not put their children at risk. I have to drive to the pool and speak with others who come regularly from Hamilton and Cambridge. I am grateful for the pools existence - my health would have suffered without it. ROBIN HOLDAWAY

Time to start snapping Reducing burglaries
Te Awamutu Community Constable Richard Hurrell says knowing how a burglar operates may stop you from becoming a victim. He suggests the following tips : Set up or join a Neighbourhood Support Group in your area Make sure doors, windows and other entry and exit points from your house have good quality, effective catches and locks Always lock doors and windows at night, if youre out in the garden or going out or away. Keep garden sheds and garages secure. Lock away tools, ladders Have an alarm system professionally installed Install sensor lights on access paths or around main external doors Install a peep-hole in a front door so you know whos visiting you Ask unannounced visitors who they are and what they want. Trim trees or remove shrubbery which might hide a burglars activity Get to know your neighbours and develop plans to deal with problems or suspicious activity. If youre going away, neighbours can collect your mail or newspaper and make your place look occupied. Mark valuable property with serial numbers and keep a record of these numbers. Consider placing Beware of Dog signs on gates or fences. Police are always interested in suspicious activity. Dont hesitate to report something out of the ordinary. Above all, remember burglars like easy, tempting opportunities. If you, or someone you know has been burgled, it is best to take immediate action to improve the security of your home. If you do see someone acting suspiciously in your neighbourhood ask yourself the following questions. Have I seen this person in the neighbourhood before? Is there a sense of purpose to the persons activity? What does the person appear to be looking at and why? Does this person have a car and whats the car registration number? Mr Hurrell may be contacted at the Te Awamutu Police Station (ph 872 0100). For further safety tips see todays feature (pages 12-13).

Did you know all appliances should be checked annually to ensure they are safe for use?
Shirley Rouse was panicstricken when she discovered her two-year-old Will had eaten the tiny, white silica beads that he found in her new purse. He asked if he could eat the lollies. I told him that they werent lollies and he needed to throw them away. Rouse left the room for only a few moments, but it was enough time for Will to swallow what he thought was a treat. The rst thing she did was to assess the situation - how sick was he and how many of the beads had he eaten? She decided he was not very sick, and hadnt eaten many, but she decided to call her Poisons Centre for advice. The Poisons Centre told her that the beads, used to absorb moisture and commonly found in new handbags and luggage, were non-toxic. But Rouse was still shaken. She had good reason to be: accidental childhood poisonings are common and they dont always have good outcomes. The National Poison Centre (766) is well equipped to provide vital information on what to do in case of a possible poisoning. Signs of poisoning include difculty breathing or speaking, dizziness, unconsciousness, foaming or burning of the
SAFE IS YOUR WORLD?
If poison is inhaled, take the child outside for fresh air. If breathing or heartbeat is absent, perform CPR and call 111 immediately. If the child is unconscious or breathing is difcult or laboured, call 111. The younger the child, the more likely that he or she will ingest something dangerous. You cant leave your children alone in a room with toxic agents and expect them to leave them alone when you tell them to. Be sure to keep the usual and the unusual - suspects out of reach and out of sight. The most dangerous household items for children under ve include prescription and non-prescription medications, car cleaning solutions, caustic chemicals (oven cleaner, dishwasher powder etc), hydrocarbons (kerosene etc), pesticides and alcohol. Other less obvious substances that should also be kept out of reach include iron supplements, mouthwash and nicotine. Cosmetics and other attractively packaged items are also dangerous. Children like anything colourful that may look like a toy or sweets. All of these items should be kept locked up or out of reach. The debate has been reignited about what types of smoke alarms should be used. Photoelectric alarms go off when the light sensor is disturbed, while an ionisation alarm goes off when smoke is detected. The Fire Service says people should not lose faith in any smoke alarms - working alarms are far better than no alarms at all. In most fatal res in New Zealand no smoke alarms were installed, and most res in this country begin in the kitchen. Hot aming res rise up to the ionisation smoke alarms most commonly used, says re engineer Dr Paula Beever. Dr Beever is a world recognised authority in re engineering and runs the Fire Services risk management arm. She says that each year since 2002, 1000 house res have been successfully detected by smoke alarms, and two-thirds of these res controlled without any damage to the house. ``Smoke alarms do save lives. All of them give people sufcient warning time to get everyone out - that is why we always advise people to get smoke alarms installed and practise your escape plans. She says re safety is not just about smoke alarms, which at the end of the day are the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff. `We are always urging people to stop res happening in the rst place. There are three causes of res - men, women and children. One of our main messages is keep looking while youre cooking.

Hey - c u cnr of Wht St n Brdwy Rd at 5?
Text messaging is now part of our everyday life and most people could not imagine being without it. It is both an inexpensive and convenient way of communicating. However txt has introduced similar risks to those of internet chat rooms, that is you are not always sure of the real identity of the person you are communicating with. With txt anyone can be hiding behind an anonymous prepay mobile phone number. The warning around text messaging is exactly the same as that applied to internet chat rooms. Dont agree to meet people you do not know, unless you do so in circumstances where you are completely safe, for example you are with a group of friends. Mobile phones are now regarded as a necessity by most people and they provide a means to achieve a level of freedom and convenience to communicate with others from almost anywhere. All that is required is a little common sense around their use and storage to ensure that mobile phone ownership is relatively risk free.

Channel. The lm deftly avoids the pitfalls of sentiment through self-deprecating humour that recalls The Full Monty in tone and theme, as well as a stunning performance from Peter Mullan as protagonist Frank Redmond. As the emotional styles swing around him, Peter Mullan holds the lm together with a performance of granite-like strength. His Frank is not a likeable cheeky chap (leave it to Billy Boyd for that part of the equation), but a pig-headed man who bottles up his feelings and needs the repetition of his swimming training to give his newly unemployed life some order.

Separated by 3000 miles, Marilyn Vine and Ria Lynch both nd their lives turned upside down. Marilyn struggles to cope with a tragic turn of events that threatens to shatter her family, while Ria grapples with news of her husband Dannys indelity. An accidental phone call brings these two otherwise unrelated women together and, in their mutual need for space and time alone, they agree to a two-month house exchange. Ria moves to small-town New England, while Marilyn takes over the stately Tara Road in Ireland. In swapping homes, both women slowly nd healing and strength through new surroundings and the kindness of others and gradually learn to accept the reality of their changed lives. Tara Road is adapted from the best-selling novel of the same name by internationally acclaimed Irish author Maeve Binchy (Circle of Friends).
