| I bought my LG L226WTQ a year ago, in March 2008, from Future Shop in Toronto. At that time it was on sale: $259 CAD + tax. Ultra-fast response rate. Excellent calibration software. Great picture and video quality. Abysmal text display quality. | |

| Excellent monitor (average for the Xbox) My 4 year old 17" Acer 4:3 TFT was redeployed recently. Good Screen, but watch out for the "pixel policy"! This product is spot on... but I received it with one dead pixel. Got in contact with the company,... | |

Step 1 Turn to the section on the appliance you want to buy. The introduction to each section contains valuable information about appliance types and provides tips to help you save money and energy when operating your appliance. Step 2 Turn to the listings of the appliance you want to buy and search by brand name, model number and appliance size. Step 3 Compare appliance models annual energy consumption and energy costs. For ease of reference, appliances are listed alphabetically according to brand name.
Model numbers
Youll notice the asterisk (*) and number sign (#) often accompany model numbers throughout this directory. These symbols indicate series of brand models that have the same energy performance features. For example, if models 1234AG, 1234BG and 1234CG have the same features and EnerGuide ratings, these models may be listed as 1234**. The asterisk and number sign indicate features or codes that do not affect energy consumption (for example, the colour of the appliance).
The EnerGuide Label
Youre probably already familiar with the EnerGuide label, which has been in use for 25 years. By law, the label must be affixed to all new electrical appliances manufactured in or imported into Canada. Its important to remember that the label is not a seal of energy efficiency; its a tool that lets you compare the energy consumption of similar appliances and determine how specific models measure up to the most energy-efficient appliances available. The label indicates the amount of electricity measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year used by an appliance. See Whats a kilowatt-hour? for more information. Energy use is determined according to standardized test procedures that manufacturers must apply. In fact, all manufacturers must abide by the Energy Efficiency Regulations of Canadas Energy Efficiency Act. All appliances must be verified by a third-party verification agency in accordance with Regulations to demonstrate that they meet Canada's minimum energy performance levels.
English introduction How to read the EnerGuide label
The large number is an appliances estimated annual energy consumption, which is measured in kWh per year. The shaded bar scale displays the energy-consumption range for appliance models of this type and size. The figure at the left end of the scale indicates the lowest energy-consumption rating; the figure on the right indicates the highest. An arrow just above the bar scale shows where the appliance ranks relative to similar models. The ENERGY STAR symbol accompanies the EnerGuide label only on appliance models that achieve premium levels of energy efficiency, based on specific criteria endorsed by NRCan.

= $58.20 Lifetime electricity cost calculation:
= $103.20 Lifetime electricity cost calculation:

A big difference The energy-wise and environmentally conscious choice may also be the most economical, as the most energy-efficient washer will cost you $624.40 less than model X to operate over the life of the appliance. And remember, when the cost of electricity rises, so will your savings.
Appliance Recycling
If youre shopping for new major appliances, you may have old items that are ready for disposal. Be sure to choose an environmentally friendly option. Appliance-recycling programs are available in many Canadian communities; consult your Yellow Pages or call your municipality to find out what programs exist and how appliances are collected. Ask if CFCs, or chlorofluorocarbons, are removed before appliances are crushed for recycling. CFCs are the gases that cool refrigerators and freezers. If not recovered properly, CFCs escape and damage the atmospheres ozone layer.

EnerGuide and the Environment
Many electrical utilities across Canada burn fossil fuels such as oil, coal and natural gas to produce energy. The combustion of fossil fuels releases greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, contributing to the global problem of climate change. By choosing energy-efficient appliances, you help the environment by cutting emissions that contribute to climate change. After all, the less energy we use, the less energy will be generated and fewer pollutants released.
Smarter consumers, more energy-efficient appliances
As the following table shows, over the past two decades, appliance manufacturers have made significant improvements to the energy efficiency of their appliances. For example on average, todays refrigerators and freezers use at least 60 percent less energy than those built in 1984; dishwashers use at least 50 percent less.
As of 2003, ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators are available in all categories, not just among certain sizes of refrigerator-freezers with automatic defrost. There are now ENERGY STAR performance levels for all regulated types and sizes of standard and compact models. This includes refrigerators with manual and partial automatic defrost as well as all-refrigerators.* Standard-size refrigerators must achieve energy efficiency levels that are at least 10 percent higher than the minimum regulated standard in Canada in 2003 and 15 percent higher than the standard in 2004. Compact refrigerators must achieve energy efficiency levels that are at least 20 percent higher than the minimum regulated standard in Canada to be ENERGY STAR qualified. The best energy performers are ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators. A star () in the right-hand column indicates ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators that are listed in this directory.
Refrigerator categories
Refrigerators are available in various sizes and with a variety of different features, all of which affect energy consumption. Thats why EnerGuide groups refrigerators according to type and size, enabling you to compare the energy consumption of similar models. For the purposes of this directory, refrigerators are listed according to three categories.
* The term all-refrigerators refers to models that have no freezer compartment.
Refrigerators with automatic defrost
This category includes standard-size refrigerators, refrigeratorfreezers and all-refrigerators* that feature automatic defrost (Types 3 to 7 on the EnerGuide label).
Refrigerators without automatic defrost
This category includes standard-size refrigerators and refrigeratorfreezers that do not feature automatic defrost (Types 1 and 2 on the EnerGuide label).
Compact refrigerators
This category includes all compact refrigerators and refrigeratorfreezers (Types 11 to 15 on the EnerGuide label). These appliances have total refrigerated volumes of less than 219.5 L (7.75 cu. ft.) and overall heights of less than 91.4 cm (36 in.).

Energy- and money-saving tips
Be sure to read your new refrigerators owners manual; its full of hints to help you operate your refrigerator at optimum efficiency. Refrigerator motors and compressors generate heat, so allow enough space for continuous airflow around your refrigerator. If heat cant escape, the refrigerators cooling system has to work harder and use more energy. A full refrigerator is a fine thing, but be sure not to overfill the door and shelves. Restricting air circulation inside your refrigerator reduces its energy efficiency. Set your refrigerator temperature between 1.7 and 3.3C (3538F) and the freezer compartment at 18C (0F) for maximum efficiency and food safety. Make sure your refrigerators rubber door seals are clean and tight. They should hold a slip of paper snugly. If paper slips out easily, replace the seals. Heres another way to check the seals: place a lit flashlight inside the refrigerator and close the door. If you can see light around the door, the seals need to be replaced. Use the flashlight method to check freezers and ovens as well. When dust and pet hair build up on your refrigerators condenser coils, the motor works harder and uses more electricity. Clean the coils regularly to make sure air can circulate freely. If you have an older, second refrigerator that is not in use, be sure to unplug it it likely uses twice as much energy as your newer refrigerator does. When discarding your older refrigerator, check with your municipality about pick-up and recycling programs.

Youll spend a little more to buy a self-cleaning oven, but youll save money over the life of the appliance. Thats because selfcleaning ovens are usually better insulated than standard ovens. As a result, every time you cook, you lose less heat, use less energy, save money and help protect the environment. Convection ovens contain fans that keep heat moving throughout the cooking space. Not only do these ovens cook more evenly, they also cook faster. That way you use less energy and have more time to enjoy the results.

Dishwashers
Todays dishwashers use about 95 percent less energy than those built in the early 1970s, so replacing your old dishwasher may save you a lot of money over the life of the appliance. Most new dishwashers offer energy-saving features such as short, light or economy cycles. These cycles clean your dishes in one detergent wash followed by two or three rinses. Youre also given the option of heat or no-heat drying. Some new dishwashers feature sensors that measure the amount of dirt on your dishes. As a result, these appliances can determine exactly how much water will be required to clean your dishes efficiently no wasted energy, no wasted water.
The best energy performers are ENERGY STAR qualified dishwashers, which must achieve energy efficiency levels that are at least 25 percent higher than the minimum regulated standard in Canada. Presently, only standard-size dishwashers qualify for the ENERGY STAR mark. A star () in the right-hand column indicates the ENERGY STAR qualified dishwashers listed in this directory.
dishwashers
Dishwasher categories
Dishwashers are available in various sizes, which affect energy consumption. Thats why EnerGuide groups dishwashers according to three categories, enabling you to compare the energy consumption of similar models.
Built-in dishwashers
This category includes all standard-size dishwashers that are permanently connected to household water and electrical supplies. Remember that only standard-size dishwashers can qualify for the ENERGY STAR symbol.
Portable dishwashers
This category includes all standard-size dishwashers that are not permanently connected to household water and electrical supplies. Lightweight and free-standing, these models include countertop and caster-mounted dishwashers that can be easily moved from one place to another. Remember that only standard-size dishwashers can qualify for the ENERGY STAR symbol.
Compact dishwashers
Compact dishwashers include all models with capacities of less than eight place settings and six serving pieces. Note: The energy rating for dishwashers is based on 264 normalcycle operations per year and includes the energy required to heat the water.
Be sure to read your new appliances owners manual; its full of hints to help you operate your dishwasher at optimum efficiency. Regularly clean the filter at the bottom of your dishwasher to keep the machine running efficiently. Run your dishwasher only when it is full and use the setting that offers the best wash in the least amount of time. Check your dishwashers manual for the settings that work best for you. When you use your dishwashers drying cycle, an electric element heats the interior of the unit and evaporates all water. To save energy, select the dishwashers no-heat drying cycle (also called air drying). Some people rinse their dishes in the sink before putting them in the dishwasher. Dont bother! Youll save more water and energy by scraping all excess food off plates and cutlery. Your dishwasher will do the rest.

Clothes Washers
Whats best front load or top load? The drums in top-loading washers appear larger than those in front loaders because of the need for agitators the large posts set in the middle of the drum. In fact, both types have about the same capacity; however, frontloading washers use about 40 percent less water per load and 50 percent less energy than top-loading washers. Front-loading machines also use less detergent.
washers
The best energy performers are ENERGY STAR qualified clothes washers, which use 35 to 50 percent less water and at least 50 percent less energy per load than other washers. Presently, only standard-size clothes washers with minimum tub capacities of 45 L (1.6 cu. ft.) qualify for the ENERGY STAR mark. ENERGY STAR qualified clothes washers are available in both top- and frontloading models. Some ENERGY STAR qualified models can be stacked or mounted under countertops. This is a useful feature for people who are short on space, such as those in apartments. Check with the manufacturer to see which models have this feature. Look for the star () in the right-hand column to find ENERGY STAR qualified clothes washers listed in this directory.
Clothes-washer categories
Clothes washers are available in various sizes and with a variety of different features, all of which affect energy consumption. Thats why EnerGuide groups clothes washers according to two categories, enabling you to compare the energy consumption of similar models.
Standard clothes washers
This category includes standard-size top- and front-loading clothes washers. These are the only models that can qualify to carry the ENERGY STAR mark.
Compact clothes washers
This category includes top- and front-loading models with capacities of less than 45 L. Note: The energy rating for clothes washers is based on 392 normal-cycle operations per year.
Be sure to read your new appliances owners manual; its full of hints to help you operate your clothes washer at optimum efficiency. Studies show that clothes rinsed in cold water come out just as clean as those rinsed in warm, so go cold! Youll save money on your water-heating bill. To save more, wash in warm rather than hot water youll use 50 percent less energy, and your clothes will come out better rinsed and less wrinkled. Are those clothes extra dirty? Instead of washing them twice, use your washing machines pre-soak cycle. Clothes washers are most energy efficient when theyre fully loaded. Thats why its important to buy a machine that matches your familys needs. If your machine has a water-level selector, make sure you choose the correct setting for each load. Whenever possible, place your washing machine close to your hot water heater to reduce heat loss in the connecting pipes. Wrap any exposed pipes with insulation, especially where they are close to uninsulated walls.
