| Easy as pie to set up! Didn't have to adjust anything. Hooked up to network via LAN line and the set did an update and all was well. This television is fantastic!!! LED backlighting, 1080p, 120 hz - super crisp and clear picture. I was originally looking at the 46 Connections". Great LED TV for the price. The colors are terrific and brightness is perfect. There is a little bleeding on the edges like many LED have issues with. | |

Te Awamutu couple Graeme and Margaret Shaw have picked up a trip to South America as winners of the Fonterra Westpac Dairy Excellence Farm Business Award. The couple won two categories (Productivity, Environmental Integrity/Quality Management) on their way to winning the overall title last week. Doug and Penny Storey of Woodstock Road won the Business Growth category, while Malcolm and Jody Ellis (Pirongia) won the Human Wealth category. Further details will be published in the April Rural Roundup.

Bell tolls for TA
Te Awamutu is one of three Waikato towns that is to be bypassed by trains. Toll NZ says its Overlander passenger trains will not be stopping in Te Awamutu, Te Kauwhata and Huntly from April 10. The reduced numbers of stops (seven in all) is to slice around 40 minutes off the Auckland to Wellington trip. The company says low passenger numbers means it is no longer viable to stop in towns such as Te Awamutu and the changes will make the service more efcient. SEA-NIC: Above right: artist Caroline Oakes with one of the first paintings she did in 1998 (in oils) and (above left) a recently completed 090051AD similar scene in acrylics, that has made Caroline a finalist in the National IHC Telecom Art Awards. By Grant Johnston Caroline Oakes of Rukuhia is one of 30 nalists from around New Zealand selected for the IHC Telecom Art Awards exhibition at The Dowse in Lower Hutt from April 9 to July 10. The nalists were selected from over 400 artworks submitted by artists with intellectual disabilities throughout New Zealand. Caroline has been painting for seven years and says it provides her with a lot of enjoyment and it is both rewarding and challenging. Her work in the nal, titled Incoming Tide, was a variation on a tidal scene she has painted previously - this time done with acrylics and a palette knife. The effect is stunning. Regional judge, Mary Kisler, Mackelvie Curator of International Art at the Auckland Art Gallery, said Carolines style was particularly assured, capturing the mood of the sea and condently showing the movement of waves. Carolines tutor, Jan Lawson of Visualz Community Living Trust Art Studio in Hamilton, says after a break for a couple of years, Caroline is back into her art with a vengeance. She does papier mache as well, but seems to really love her painting. She gets stuck in. She is supported by staff to learn new art skills (at lessons she attends each Tuesday) and she has improved a lot and is still improving. George Hill, the second placegetter in the inaugural awards in 2004 for his work Bottom Teeth, is a nalist again with a new piece entitled Note No.6. Mary Kisler said she was particularly impressed by the range of the artwork submitted. None of the nalists pieces are similar and they are all beautifully presented. From the subjects and images depicted you could really sense they were by the hand of the artist and the artworks, therefore, provide a fascinating perspective on the artists lives, she says. The IHC Telecom Art Awards exhibition at The Dowse starting next month is believed to be the rst national exhibition of artwork by artists with intellectual disabilities. The overall winners of the Awards will be announced at a National Awards function and auction at The Dowse on May 11. The nalists work can also be viewed online at www.ihc.org.nz from April 1, with details on how to bid for individual artworks.

Kihikihi sewerage system construction is due to start later this year and should be up and running by mid 2006, not 2007 as printed in last weeks Word on Waipa. The year for the introduction of Development Impact Fees was also missing from the article - 2004.

Waipa District Council has instructed consultants to urgently scope a new public toilet for Te Awamutu. Last month, Council received a 500signature petition from the Te Awamutu Information Centre calling for a new toilet at Selwyn Park. The Centre was concerned that visitors to the town were being put off by a lack of nearby facilities. While Council has responded quickly, it says it will not commit to any new facility until costs are fully known, and the impact on broader plans for Te Awamutu town centre and Selwyn Park are clear. Chief executive John Inglis said prior to receiving the petition, consultants had already been asked by Council to investigate a public toilet in the vicinity of Gorst Avenue. They had recommended any new toilet block be located between the In-

Easter Bunnies arrive early
By Cathy Asplin With bunny ears and painted whiskers, baskets of Easter Eggs and a serious look on their faces, children from Ohaupo Playcentre entered the Windsor Court rest home last week. While its not traditionally the day for the Easter Bunny to arrive, the children made a special visit to brighten the day of some of the elderly residents in their community. Some of the children were clearly a little perturbed at the thought of giving away all of their Easter Eggs, but theres no doubt they will have received plenty more over the weekend to make up for it. Ohaupo Playcentre parents say the children had great fun making baskets and stacking them with eggs, before putting on their Easter Bunny extras and hopping up to the rest home. Windsor Court activities co-ordinator Sue Dix says the residents gained equally from the experience. They love it when young people from the community visit - in fact many go weak at the knees when they see babies and toddlers arrive! Interaction with groups from outside the rest home is wonderful and we appreciate the efforts the playcentre has gone to for this visit. LEFT: Ohaupo Playcentres Jack Scrutton shares the excitement of opening Easter Eggs with Windsor Court 090053AD resident Joyce Price. BELOW: Bradley Thomas (right) and Bjorn Barris hand out Easter Eggs eggs to residents Aisne Macfarlane 090053BD and Lilian Derrick.

Te Pahu bowls up and running
Great fun was had by all when Te Pahu Indoor Bowling Club kicked their season off with a variety of novelty games. Club spokesperson, Ron Woolerton quipped: It probably was more through good luck than good management that the winners on the night were Fred Finlayson and Clive Shaw. A quick glance at the results reveals that Woolerton and his partner Peter Spedding had to settle for runners-up - funny that. Te Pahu bowls is held every Tuesday (7.30pm) at the Te Pahu Hall. Anyone is welcome.

Sams story of survival BEACH BREAKS
From page 5. Sam remained in a coma for 12 hours and pulled through thanks to the fast actions of medical staff and a high level of potassium in her blood stream that comes from eating healthy fruit and vegetables. My Dad always called me a monkey from eating so much fruit. The doctor said anyone less healthy than me wouldnt have made it. In hospital for ve days, Sams body took a while to recover and a year later she is still plagued with migraines and fatigue. You kind of need a near death experience to really appreciate life. Im so lucky Im still here. Strong advocates of the meningococcal B vaccine, Sam and Davieth have both had their rst injection and are booked in for their second in the rst week of April. Immunisation for young people under 20 years old that have left school started late January this year. Numbers for this age group are low according to Waikato Institute of Technology and University of Waikato medical staff. Vaccinations started in February for Wintec students and over 800 letters were sent out informing them about the MeNZB vaccine. To date only 250 students are estimated to have had their rst jab. O-week at the University kicked off the beginning of meningococcal B vaccination and 113 students were vaccinated from last Thursday. These numbers are less than expected according to Wintec health nurse Allie Stevens. Numbers are low for this age group all over the Waikato. We hope it picks up as awareness grows. Sam puts her hands over her head in frustration when she thinks about people who dont take meningococcal disease seriously. It really hurts me when I see my friends sharing chapstick or anything else. They just forget what I went through. All Sam and Davieths close group of friends have had their rst injection and Sams two younger sisters are getting immunised at school. Sam learnt what the symptoms of meningococcal disease are through a poster on the wall next to her hang out at Te Awamutu College. You dont have to have all the symptoms right away for it to be meningococcal. I didnt have all the symptoms. She also wants to emphasis the fact that after you have had the MeNZB injection, you are still vulnerable against other strains of meningococcal disease. Get the three injections instead of having a lumber puncture in your back and your family being told you are going to die. It was so horrible what I went through. I was lying on my death bed. This Easter was a celebration for Sam and her family. She threw an Im alive party for all the people that supported her and comforted her during that terrible time. I am lucky to have so many people that care about me. Their support helped me to recover, my hospital bed was always surrounded, I never spent a moment alone. Working for her grandparents making magnetic inset screens for windows, Sam hopes she will one day soon recover her energy and be able to work full time. She has already attended three interviews but feels that after explaining to employers the fatigue she gets due to the meningococcal B they may have been put off. Eager to work and determined to regain a normal life, its hard to understand why prospective employers arent snapping this strong young girl up.

Waipa weekend gets thumbs up
Pre-National Bank Cup netball tournament rated best yet
By Colin Thorsen Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic CEO Sheryl Dawson has given the annual Waipa weekend pre-season netball tournament in Te Awamutu at the weekend big raps. Around 300 people took in the action both days at the Trust Waikato Te Awamutu Events Centre. They were treated to some top class netball from many of the countrys premier players and promising newcomers in six of the countrys eight franchise teams. It was the best tournament yet in Te Awamutu, says Dawson. We had excellent crowd turnout, including spectators from as far aeld as Opotiki and Australia. After nishing third in 2003 and fourth last year, could this be the year Magic break through for their rst win in the National Bank Cup, starting on April 8? One thing is certain - the Noeline Taurua coached Magic side of 2005 showed they will be more than competitive after recording three wins from four games at Te Awamutu. Magic bounced back from a rst-up 53-39 loss to (Canterbury) Flames, with wins over the (Wellington) Shakers 47-39, (Otago) Rebels 51-42 and (Northern) Force 37-28. All the coaches were playing things pretty close to their chests, giving all their squad court time, changing combinations throughout the four quarters. Force coach, Yvonne Willering was impressed with the number of combinations Magic was able to put out on the court. Taurua played local Silver Fern Laura Langman and Louise Moffat at centre during the twoday tournament in the quest to nd a replacement for the retired Jenny-May Cofn. Both showed sufcient form to suggest they be able replacements. Langman also shared the wing defence duties with Rebecca Gable. The Magic open the National Bank Cup with a game against the Auckland Diamonds.

First national title for Emma
Te Awamutu College fth former Emma Petersen continued her meteoric sporting rise on Saturday by winning her rst National title, taking out the Intermediate (U16) Girls Duathlon title at the NZ Secondary Schools Championships in Christchurch. Petersen absolutely blitzed the eld once on the bike after entering transition after the rst run in fourth equal place. A phone call to coach Errol Newlands from rival spectator and director of sport at Rangitoto College, Peter Harwood, suggested that the race was over by the end of the rst of the six laps of the cycle leg, such was Petersens superior speed on the bike. Trailing the leader by 40 seconds after the rst 3.5km run leg, Petersen lit the afterburners on the 14.8km bike leg to leave her rivals stunned with a blistering 23 min, 58 sec ride that was 3 min, 19 sec faster than eventual silver medallist Johanna van Doorn from Christchurch to give Petersen a 2.41 lead at the nish of the bike leg. With a 2.5km run to the nish line, Petersen had only her shadow for company as she cantered in for a victory that had stunned other competitors and spectators alike, including mother Sandra who was an emotional spectator. Finishing with a 2 min, 26 sec margin back to second place, Petersen sent a stern message to her competitors who may well be thinking about challenging for her title at next years National Champs in Napier. With Petersen again competing in this age group in 2006 there will no doubt be a race on their hands. Petersen has had an incredible year. Her victory in Christchurch followed success at the Waikato Secondary Schools Duathlon Championships (see story on local duathletes page 15). She was second at the Duathlon Nationals last year at Napier, second at NZ Secondary Schools Cycling Champs in two events at Fielding last September, selected for the NZ U17 Cycling Team in 2005 and claimed gold in the U17 Girls North Island Cycling Championship two weekends ago. Shes also a member of the NZ Soccer Academy in her age group.
Lock it, or else
Police are reminding the public to lock their vehicles, or wear the consequences. In the early hours of Thursday last week a number of offences were committed in Pirongia, including thefts from a number of vehicles. A Police dog was able to track the scent around a number of Pirongia streets before locating the offenders. The dog handler reported nding at least six vehicles unlocked on various streets. Police say the rst step to preventing vehicle crime is locking the vehicle. The second is reporting the offence.
EMMA PETERSENS cycling prowess left rivals in her wake in the NZ Secondary Schools Duathlon Championships. 200051AD
Boat sunk
An aerial sticking out of the water at high tide was the only visible sign of a boat which sank in Kawhia Harbour over the weekend. The 48ft steel launch is believed to be a casualty of the rough weather and heavy seas, breaking its mooring before lling with water faster than the bilge pumps could work.

The club award of the Log of Wood trophy for outstanding contribution in a project during the last year went to Richard Reynolds. Magic captain hits town
At last weeks policy committee meeting, Waipa District Council publicly acknowledged a highly successful season by the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic netball team. Mayor Alan Livingston congratulated co-captain of the National Bank Cup winning team Amigene Metcalfe, who was at the meeting. He said Waipa residents were proud of Magics achievement and the way in which the district had contributed to their success. Magic coach Noeline Taurua has acknowledged Te Awamutu as being the home of the Magic, with the Trust Waikato Te Awamutu Events Centre used for a pre-season tournament and practise sessions. Waipa has provided signicant sponsorship support and has a strong presence in the team. Amigene, Laura Langman and Carla Sutton are Waipa residents and have been joined by Joeline Henry who now lives in Cambridge. Metcalfe thanked the Waipa Council and community for their great support. Ive been blown away by the way the public of Cambridge and Te Awamutu have got behind us over recent years. She put the Magics success down to thorough pre-season preparation, a belief in themselves and skill and tness levels that combined to make them better than any of the other franchises.
MAGIC captain Amigene Metcalfe was stoked to see her teams cup winning banner taking pride of place at Paper Plus. She is pictured with College Open As Ashley Webb, a part-time worker at Paper Plus. 200057AD
Refuge appeal this week
Of the 22,523 women and children who used Womens Refuge services in New Zealand last year, 84% were new clients. The 529 unpaid and 210 paid staff in Womens Refuges throughout New Zealand provided assistance to 13,837 women and 8,686 children. Since 1995, the numbers of women and children receiving services from refuges has increased by 25%. Average length of stay in refuges increased from 12 days in 2000 to 31 days in 2004. Government currently provides $4 million to refuges for direct services, which represents 22% of the total costs for providing services for women and children to create safer lives. This week is the annual Womens Refuge Appeal Week and Te Awamutu Womens Refuge will be fundraising with a rafe stall outside the BNZ this Friday. During the year Te Awamutu Womens Refuge supported 47 women and 59 children in its refuge house. It also supported 60 women and 20 children in the community. We have never before had such a wide diversity of ethnicities in the families we have supported, says administrator Ann Mellor in her annual report for the year ended March 31, 2005. New advocates attended a training session in May with Brenda Campbell from Napier Womens Refuge, which was also attended by experienced advocates. From the session two new advocates signed up. Membership has been maintained at 14. A number of other workshops and hui were attended by delegates. A donation of a 1989 Nissan Prairie van has provided a great boost for the Refuge. With nancial help from Altrusa and Rosetown Lions two new computer stations were bought for the ofce, meaning two computers can now be operated. A grant of $5000 from Trust Waikato assisted with ofce rent, $2000 from the Caversham Trust with emergency clothing and food and $1000 from the Community Trust with funding a childrens advocate. A number of local businesses and organisations were also generous in their support for the work of the Refuge in helping women and children to live free from domestic violence.
Thanks!

Bobcat operator returns home to run business
IN BUSINESS CIRCLES
A1 BOBCATS LTD operator Brad McClunie on site with his bobcat and truck. When it comes to operating a bobcat Brad McClunie has done just about everything - from digging up lawns to burying whales on the beach. He now operates his own business A1 Bobcats Ltd here, after recently returning to the area from the Bay of Plenty. It was while living in Tauranga that he was called on to bury whales at Maketu, as well as resurfacing the walking track around the Mount. He also did plenty of work in the construction industry, helping the continuing building boom in the Bay of Plenty. They are very particular about work done on building sites over there and I was gaining a very good reputation for my accurate, reliable work. But my wife and I wanted to come back to the Waikato. We have a young daughter and our family is here, so when an opportunity arose to relocate the business here we decided to take it. He works closely with Waikato Bobcats (particularly

A1 Bobcats Ltd can help on new house sites or farms, with excavations, driveways, lawn levelling, landscaping and demolition work. Mr McClunie works exible hours anywhere in the Waikato and offers friendly, helpful service at a reasonable rate. For quotes or further information contact him on 4991 or a/h.

Mitsubishi Galant 1977-2005 Nissan diesel Caravans
By Dean Taylor Theyve been around through four decades. Now they are going. One of Mitsubishis favourite models, the Galant, is being replaced. I drove one of the run-out specials from Te Awamutu Motors, the 2.0 litre automatic, and was reminded that they are very driveable, reasonably well appointed and great value for money. Its also a good looking car, especially with the spoiler tted. The 100Kw engine isnt mind blowing, but its a proven unit with good reliability and good torque. It ts well with the automatic, and can be fun using the sports mode shifter. And it follows a tradition of very good cars, although in the Mitsubishi lineage, the Galant hasnt always been the family saloon. In fact in the 1970s when it was rst released the Galant GTO Colt was the equivalent of todays Lancer Evo. It became a bit more

By Dean Taylor Watson Haworth Motors owner Graham Haworth loves his exotic cars. He and his son also race Mustangs (see page 11). So with this in mind they sent me onto the streets to test drive a 2001 Nissan caravan diesel. The fact is these vans are the bread and butter for the business, so much so they now specialise in the importation of this one model in long or short wheelbase, high or low roof and either four speed auto or ve speed manual. All have the proven 3.2 litre diesel engine which has a proven track record for reliability. This Nissan development does not have a cam belt. My Dual Door LWB model is selling at just under $17,000 and represents great value for a business client. The sheer simplicity of the design and cab suggest there is really nothing to go wrong or break. Watson Haworth Motors sell these vehicles all over New Zealand. They have about 10 ar-

the new, Australian made Mitsubishi 380. The name refers to the 3.8 litre V6 powerplant. Galant lovers can take some consolation in the fact the 380 is based
on the American Galant platform. Mitsubishi say the new car, which we will see early November, is bigger in all respects than its Australian competition.
riving each month, from 1998 to 2001 models priced from over $10,000 to about $17,000. I took mine cruising and had to be impressed by the pull of the big diesel. It only has 79kW, but the 221Nm of torque is very handy. What else can climb the steep side of College Street in fourth. The back is spacious, and with a rear door and two sided doors, must be a tradesmans dream. The only downsides were a radio that cant get Hauraki and a skinnyish drivers seat.

Eze way to clean cars
Mark Wardlows bright yellow VW Beetle attracts plenty of attention wherever it goes. At the car show in Te Awamutu earlier this year, fans chatted to him about his cute little beetle and the VW club he belongs to. But the car also doubles as a moving billboard for his business. Mr Wardlow has developed and markets EzeWash - EzeShine, a two-in-one vehicle grooming product that (as its name suggests) is very easy to use, economical and environmentally friendly. EzeWash - EzeShine is a relatively new product on the market. It has been researched and developed using modern technology to complement the latest paint nishes and to excel as a cleaner/enhancer in todays environment. Product efciency and economy were paramount in this development - the result is a simple, one-step cleaner - requiring only a little extra effort in extreme cases - that is versatile and leaves a long-lasting shine to enhance any car, boat, motorbike, helicopter or tractor. HAMILTON VW Club members Ian Manson (left) and Mark Wardlow talk with visitors to the Te Awamutu Car Show from the EzeWash beetle. tures many testimonials, including some from owners of helicopters, V8 touring cars, classic cars and contracting equipment. Ive even had people tell me its great for cleaning windows and showers. Whats more the product is easy on the environment. It has a neutral pH (the same as your skin) and most importantly, contains no waxes or silicones that can contribute to the build-up of potentially hazardous lm on your windscreen. Mr Wardlow says the New Zealand made product with ISO 9001 accreditation produces a long-lasting shine on vehicles, is very easy to use and as a bonus for every 1 litre bottle purchased, $1 goes to help CCS. Locally EzeWash - EzeShine is available from Te Awamutu Motors and the Mobil Service Station.
