| Ultra-fast response rate. Excellent calibration software. Great picture and video quality. Abysmal text display quality. I like to play computer games from time to time. Very crisp and sharp picture as long as background is white. Massive ghosting (dragging shadows) behind any moving objects. | |

BRIEFLY Christmas open house back
Dona and Gary Hobbs Pirongia Christmas house will be open again this year by popular demand. Mrs Hobbs was instrumental in staging the Festival of Trees in Pirongia Memorial Hall last Christmas. Around 2000 people attended the event and many wanted to know when will the house be open - referring to the Hobbs house containing Christmas displays which was a huge drawcard the year before. Once again this years open house will help raise funds for local organisations - including Te Awamutu BMX, Life Education Trust and Rewi Street Kindergarten. There will be a Christmas tree display and sale, light display and displays of nativity scenes from around the world, Christmas decorations etc The house opens this Friday and daily from 2.30pm-9.30pm ($1 entry) through to December 10 (when trees can be collected).
Search for arson clues
Police and re safety ofcers are treating a blaze at Te Mawhai in the early hours of Monday morning as arson. The unoccupied home was well involved when the emergency call was received at 3.40am. Ofcer in charge Michael Kimber put in a second call for assistance when his crew could see the re from Kihikihi. The house was completely destroyed by the re and reghters concentrated on protecting nearby properties. As well as being empty at the time, electricity to the house had been disconnected last week, so it is being treated as highly suspicious. Constable Bernadette Kelly says anyone with any information about the blaze, or who saw any suspicious activity in the Te Mawhai region in the early hours of Monday morning, should contact the police on in condence.

Finn winner
Congratulations to Cecil Brawn for correctly identifying Tim Finns three previous Te Awamutu public performances and winning a double pass to his Imaginary Kingdom concert at the Te Awamutu Events Centre this Saturday night. Tim played Te Awamutus Albert Park with Split Enz as part of the towns centenary celebrations in 1984, a solo concert in Te Awamutu Sports Club in 1992 and with brother Neil at the opening of the Museums True Colours exhibition in 1998. Also acceptable would have been the 1972 Sound Out 72 event starring The Peddlers at Waipa Racecourse where a teenage Brian Timothy Finn and preSplit Enz band took the stage in the talent quest. Concert promoter Brent Eccles reports 200 more tickets have been released for this weekends show. They are available from Te Awamutu i-Site Visitor Centre or Ticketek.

Prison calling about creating freedom
Errol Baker still ready to make a difference after 30 years inside
By Grant Johnston Errol Baker joined the staff at Waikeria Prison nearly 30 years ago because he wanted to make a difference - something he is just as passionate about today. Mr Baker was a recipient of the 28 year clasp (??) at a recent function at Waipa Workingmens Club. He was already familiar with a number of Waikeria employees when he joined the staff of the then borstal in 1976 as he had played rugby with them - being a member of the renowned Baker brothers at St Pats Rugby Club. The money on offer was reasonable and I had a young family so that was a consideration, but above all I felt I had something to offer the prisoners to help prevent them from reoffending. Mr Baker says knowledge of life skills and an appreciation of the need to be a team player were among the attributes missing for many prisoners. Ive always seen team sport as a really good way for bringing people together into a family type situation - which for some of these guys was something badly missing in their lives. Family will generally let you know when you are in the wrong, but theyre also your staunchest allies. Having a family to boost you up, but at the same time keep your feet rmly on the ground is an important aspect of anyones upbringing. Getting these guys (prisoners) together into family situations is a way of helping them rebuild their lives. There have been huge changes at Waikeria in the three decades that Mr Baker has worked there - most obviously from being a borstal taking youth offenders for up to two years to being the largest prison in the country, with all types of prisoners including high security prisoners serving life sentences. The clientele at the prison reects the changes in society with dramatic increases in serious and violent crime leading to inmates serving longer sentences. We did not have the drug issues 30 years ago that we see today. A lot of people see drugs as way of getting rich quickly. Drugs exacerbate the problems that are already there. There is a lot of anger and frustration, with the rich in society getting rich and the poor becoming poorer. There are also often a lot of social implications from young people raising children - kids having kids. Mr Baker overseas the Te Aomarama Unit at Waikeria, where inmates are taught basic life skills and undergo an NCES qualications system in literacy - working one on one and learning in groups. Carving skills are taught - with inmates doing a lot of wood and bone carving also in their own time. A programme that has worked well for Maori prisoners, Te Hau Horongo, involves learning about tikanga and kawa - they learn about their history and what it is like to live the Maori way. Some prisoners come in here really angry - they dont know what they want. This programme gives them direction. It is about using the past to build the future. Mr Baker says he has seen enormous change in some inmates through this programme. One guy was right into a gang and was in for serious crimes. When he left he was a positive, condent, assured person - totally different. He was a leader in his unit and won the korero (speech) part of a kapa haka contest. Two other prisoners are now back in their own communities putting what they learned to good use to help others. In order to change, a person has to want to change - this unit gives them more opportunity and reason to change. I really enjoy what I do. If I can help a prisoner and prevent them from reoffending then I feel I have succeeded, Mr Baker says. Other honours presented at the function at Waipa Workingmens Club were to: 28 years: Graham Smith, Jim Tane, Graham Lile. 21 years: Mark Gulliver, Beth Richardson, Phillip Mosen, Misikueni Tualima, Allan Johnson, John Grifn, Paul OByrne, Noel Aukett.
KTAB incr-edible gardens
With a famous gardening surname it was probably quite tting that Margaret and Derek Yates were named winners of the open section of the Keep Te Awamutu Beautiful edible garden competition. The couple have a relatively small section surrounding their home unit on Elizabeth Avenue, but that doesnt stop them from growing an enormous range of fruit and vegetables, The vegetable garden boasts everything from beans and broccoli to cauliowers, carrots, cabbages and corn, with every space cleverly utilised. Fruit includes apples, several forms of citrus, feijoas, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries. Theres also rhubarb, cape gooseberries and herbs tucked in various nooks and crannies. They rarely have to buy anything in the fruit or vegetable line as they always have something in the garden for their meals, while Mrs Yates makes jams, marmalades and chutneys. The couple have three compost bins on the go to provide for their thriving garden. While the back of their section is mostly used for fruit and vegetables, the front is more ornamental. Amongst the many lovely shrubs and owers are some magnicent roses. Mrs Yates says they spend many hours in their garden but its not really hard work. I enjoy being in the garden - its a relaxation rather than a chore. EDIBLE GARDEN RESULTS Runner-up in the open section was Joy Smith for her Racecourse Road garden, which features an amazing variety of vegetables, with boxes of seedlings Third equal went to Russ Falconer for the healthy vegetables which receive compost from his own garden and Keith Millar who utilises every available spot for planting. In the junior section Abby Millar picked up rst place for her wonderful patch, complete with rabbit proof fences. Puahue School took out the school section with a colourful garden that hosts lots of butteries. In the kindergarten section Rewi Street took top honours, with Hazelmere Kindergarten placed second. The Edible Gardens judge, Eon Fraser, commended all the vegetable gardens and commented that even a small patch can produce a large amount of vegetables. He has offered to help plan or advise anyone keen to start a new edible gardens in their own back yard. OWNERS Mick and Faye Henderson (seated front) celebrate winning the 332065AD KTAB supreme award with staff outside The Redoubt.
OPEN section winners in the Edible Garden contest, Margaret and Derek 332065BD Yates tend to their thriving vegetable patch.

Plunket gets more than 5 cents worth
ANZs 5s for Under Fives appeal has raised $650,631.90 for Plunket in the past 16 months. Thats the equivalent of 13 million 5 cent coins that will benet children and young families throughout the country. Plunkets New Zealand president, Kaye Crowther, says she is elated at the results of the appeal, and thanks the New Zealanders who supported Plunket by gathering and donating 5 cent coins before their withdrawal from circulation. The wonderful thing is that all the 5s for Under Fives money will be used in the community where it was collected, with local families beneting from an increase in the Plunket services they most need, says Mrs Crowther. In the Waikato, money raised will help fund parent education. ANZ received Best Cause Sponsor award at the New Zealand Sponsorship Awards for 5s for Under Fives. ANZ will continue to accept donations on behalf of Plunket.

Alexandra Antiques restored in Te Awamutu
A business that operated in Te Awamutu many years ago has been resurrected by Pirongia residents Joan and Tony Hodgson. Not surprisingly Alexandra Antiques began on Alexandra Street around 10 years ago, but it actually had its beginnings at the front of the couples business, Hodgsons Furniture. Mr Hodgson is a cabinet maker and had a workshop at the rear of an Alexandra Street premises. When the front of the premises became vacant they decided to start an antiques and collectables shop. That business eventually went to a separate location, where it became Alexandra Antiques. When that business closed, the Hodgsons began in a co-operative venture at Tirau. Along with ve others they shared The Tirau Antique Centre for seven years, travelling from their home at Pirongia. But the lease ran out at Tirau earlier this year and the group decided to call it a day. Some of the items from the store were sold at auction, while the rest have been used to start a new Alexandra Antiques on Market Street. The Hodgsons initially found it difcult to nd a suitable premises and eventually took

The premises just happens to be one door away from their daughter and son-in-laws picture framing business. Mr and Mrs Hodgson are enjoying being back home and have a lovely selection of china, furniture, silver, glass and collectables displayed in their store. They also specialise in tracking down particular items for people. We have a book which operates as a wish-list.

Nightmare wake-up call
By Dean Taylor In the early hours of Sunday morning Brian and Christine Jeffs got the news every parent of a teenager dreads. The couples 15-year-old son, Nicholas Samuel Thomas, had died at the wheel of his car on Cambridge Road less than a kilometre from home. The news was so tragic because the Jeffs thought Nicholas was asleep in his own bed. At about 9pm Nick said goodnight and took himself off to bed, says Mr Jeffs. After the police came around we checked his room and he had done the old pillows under the blankets trick. His decision to sneak from the house and drive to a party in Hamilton was not typical of the young man - but as his Dad says - typical of a teenager. Nicholas was a good kid - a good student and talented at his two loves, music and cricket. He had been playing cricket that day, lling in for a team to get in some match play to prepare for a season with Hamilton Boys High 2nd XI. Nicholas was rapt to have made the team and was wanting to have an impressive season. Sometime, possibly that night, he decided to sneak off to a 16-year-old girls party in Hamilton his friends were at. His plan almost worked, until he fell asleep at the wheel on Cambridge Road near Pekerau Crescent and drove straight ahead into a power pole and brick fence pillar. Police believe he died instantly. Neighbours who heard the crash came to his aid immediately. Mr Jeffs says normally Nicholas would have asked to go to the party, and he or his wife would have picked him up. He thinks a recent talk about schoolwork and impending exams probably made the youngster think he wouldnt have been allowed to go, so he made his own way. As well as his cricket successes, which saw him recently on a trip to Brisbane, Nicholas was a more than promising musician. He had been drummer for the successful Waikato Youth Symphonic Band for many years, and also played for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Symphony Orchestra for the past two years and this year he also spent a week performing in Vanuatu performing with the Boys High Jazz Band. The serious crash unit is investigating, and at this stage police can only say it appears as if Nicholas simply fell asleep. Nicholas funeral is on Thursday.

Plenty to crow about.
By Cathy Asplin Kaipaki School student Ben Waterhouse (10) has certainly set the bar high for a scarecrow making competition. He is the rst to have his creation ready for the Kaipaki Country Fair (being held at his school on December 2) and hopes to inspire others around the district to have a go as well. While the entries dont close until November 25 and the completed scarecrows dont have to be shown until fair day, Ben was keen to get his built early. I talked to mum to see if she would help me build a scarecrow and we asked neighbours and friends for items that would help us. The clothes were from a friend of my Nans and the hay from the neighbours. We also went on a shopping trip to get the sunower for his pocket and the little mouse to put in his hat. It was fun and the kids at school think Arthurs pretty cool. Ben is hoping plenty of scarecrows will line the school driveway for the fair. He also plans to check out some of the games, crafts, rides, competitions and food stalls planned for the community event, which will benet his school. Entry forms and further details about the scarecrow competition or the fair are available from Kaipaki School.
Mavis, the Interislanders promotional VW Beetle, has been a big hit as she scuttles around Scream Rosetown Festival events. She took pride of place outside council chambers for the opening and was seen lurking outside the doors of Te Awamutu College Music departments Thursday night concert Songs of Travel. She was also seen at the Presbyterian Church fair and the Embroidery Exhibition, plus had morning tea on the Altrusa Garden Ramble. There is a rumour Mavis also
attended Hamiltons Beer X - but she doesnt drink and drive. Mavis will be seen at the Rose Show on Friday and will be attending the Pirongia Art Awards on Friday night. The Interislander has come on board as a new sponsor this year, and is running a fantastic contest. To be in to win a return family pass on the Interislander and prize packages for excursions in Wellington and Marlborough Sounds, simply come to Te Awamutu Rose Gardens on Sunday, November 19 and ll out an entry. The winner will be notied on Monday.

School students try hand at yachting
BUDDING yachties put their skills to the test on Lake Ngaroto. Students from Pirongia and Otorohanga South primary schools had an invaluable opportunity to try out yachting at Lake Ngaroto recently. Contingents of pupils from the two schools used the lake on different days to take advantage of the Yachting New Zealand Have a Go initiative. The programme sees three trailers set up with six optimist sailing dinghies plus three topaz two-handed learn to sail boats, as well as an inatable coach boat, travelling around the country. The package comes complete

with an experienced coach and is aimed at intermediate school aged children. Ngaroto Boat Club members assisted. The programme is based on the philosophy that all children in New Zealand should be given the chance to try yachting.
Joyce Green shootout queen
Joyce Green emerged victorious from the Top 10 shootout at Te Awamutu Womens Golf last Wednesday. Spectators were treated to some wonderful golf, interspersed with a few humorous and at times disastrous shots. Hazel Bryant was runner-up, followed by Sylvia Gooch, Erena Neilson, Maureen Fraser, June Gillespie, Min Nolan, Julie Stevanon, Raewyn Coleman and Margaret Johnson. The Wednesday scramble saw Margaret Collings to the fore with 19 stableford points, followed by Rae Roberts and Elizabeth Macpherson on 16. Julie Stevanons hot form owed over into the Saturday scramble, where she collected 43 stableford points, followed by Jade Furer on 40, Mary Strack on 36 (by lot) and June Gillespie on 36.
Wilson triumphs in triples
Murray Wilson skipped his host club team of Brian Dobbins and Doris Mackey to outright victory in the latest open tournament at Te Awamutu Bowling Club. Wilsons combination was the only team with four wins. Several teams emerged with three wins, but with the countback on differentials, Ron Parsons Pirongia team of Nevenka Drnasin and Rae Baucke emerged as runners-up. Third place went to Mike Oldelds team from Cambridge. The Devoy Signs and Graphics sponsored tournament attracted 25 teams.

In 1990 husband and wife team - David and Wendy Reynolds (pictured below) - developed the concept of creating quality New Zealand made outdoor furniture, for New Zealanders. Rhapsody Furniture was born in the garage of their Freeman Place home, with a commitment to employing local people to make quality outdoor furniture made to withstand New Zealand conditions and meet the needs of the Kiwi lifestyle. The values the company was built on remain the cornerstone of todays operation. Rhapsody Furniture has resisted the temptation to manufacture all or any of the components overseas, has stayed loyal to its Te Awamutu base by building the purpose built factory in the town and continues to be run by David and Wendy - backed by the same team of mentors, professionals, family and friends who have been there since the start. In 2006 the couple are proud to be able to do business

CINEMA SCENE
Dedicated expressly to the downfall of the monolithic Third Reich war machine, they call themselves the White Rose. Its sole female member, Sophie Scholl, is captured during a dangerous mission to distribute pamphlets on campus with her brother Hans. Unwavering in her convictions and loyalty to the White Rose, her cross-examination by the Gestapo quickly escalates into a searing test of wills as Scholl delivers a passionate call to freedom and personal responsibility that is both haunting and timeless. The true story of Germanys most famous anti-Nazi heroine is brought to thrilling life in this multi-award winning drama. Armed with longburied historical records of her incarceration, director Marc Rothemund expertly re-creates the last six days of Sophie Scholls life: a heart-stopping journey from arrest to interrogation, trial and sentence.
