Excellent monitor (average for the Xbox) My 4 year old 17" Acer 4:3 TFT was redeployed recently. Good Screen, but watch out for the "pixel policy"! This product is spot on... but I received it with one dead pixel. Got in contact with the company.

LG. I have been using LG products now for some time and never so far had a problem.

I bought my LG L226WTQ a year ago, in March 2008, from Future Shop in Toronto. At that time it was on sale: $259 CAD + tax. Ultra-fast response rate. Excellent calibration software. Great picture and video quality. Abysmal text display quality. I like to play computer games from time to time. Very crisp and sharp picture as long as background is white. Massive ghosting (dragging shadows) behind any moving objects.

Prison calling about creating freedom
Errol Baker still ready to make a difference after 30 years inside
By Grant Johnston Errol Baker joined the staff at Waikeria Prison nearly 30 years ago because he wanted to make a difference - something he is just as passionate about today. Mr Baker was a recipient of the 28 year clasp (??) at a recent function at Waipa Workingmens Club. He was already familiar with a number of Waikeria employees when he joined the staff of the then borstal in 1976 as he had played rugby with them - being a member of the renowned Baker brothers at St Pats Rugby Club. The money on offer was reasonable and I had a young family so that was a consideration, but above all I felt I had something to offer the prisoners to help prevent them from reoffending. Mr Baker says knowledge of life skills and an appreciation of the need to be a team player were among the attributes missing for many prisoners. Ive always seen team sport as a really good way for bringing people together into a family type situation - which for some of these guys was something badly missing in their lives. Family will generally let you know when you are in the wrong, but theyre also your staunchest allies. Having a family to boost you up, but at the same time keep your feet rmly on the ground is an important aspect of anyones upbringing. Getting these guys (prisoners) together into family situations is a way of helping them rebuild their lives. There have been huge changes at Waikeria in the three decades that Mr Baker has worked there - most obviously from being a borstal taking youth offenders for up to two years to being the largest prison in the country, with all types of prisoners including high security prisoners serving life sentences. The clientele at the prison reects the changes in society with dramatic increases in serious and violent crime leading to inmates serving longer sentences. We did not have the drug issues 30 years ago that we see today. A lot of people see drugs as way of getting rich quickly. Drugs exacerbate the problems that are already there. There is a lot of anger and frustration, with the rich in society getting rich and the poor becoming poorer. There are also often a lot of social implications from young people raising children - kids having kids. Mr Baker overseas the Te Aomarama Unit at Waikeria, where inmates are taught basic life skills and undergo an NCES qualications system in literacy - working one on one and learning in groups. Carving skills are taught - with inmates doing a lot of wood and bone carving also in their own time. A programme that has worked well for Maori prisoners, Te Hau Horongo, involves learning about tikanga and kawa - they learn about their history and what it is like to live the Maori way. Some prisoners come in here really angry - they dont know what they want. This programme gives them direction. It is about using the past to build the future. Mr Baker says he has seen enormous change in some inmates through this programme. One guy was right into a gang and was in for serious crimes. When he left he was a positive, condent, assured person - totally different. He was a leader in his unit and won the korero (speech) part of a kapa haka contest. Two other prisoners are now back in their own communities putting what they learned to good use to help others. In order to change, a person has to want to change - this unit gives them more opportunity and reason to change. I really enjoy what I do. If I can help a prisoner and prevent them from reoffending then I feel I have succeeded, Mr Baker says. Other honours presented at the function at Waipa Workingmens Club were to: 28 years: Graham Smith, Jim Tane, Graham Lile. 21 years: Mark Gulliver, Beth Richardson, Phillip Mosen, Misikueni Tualima, Allan Johnson, John Grifn, Paul OByrne, Noel Aukett.

Gudsell on road to Beijing
From page 14. Mr Taylor is already receiving positive reports that the car has been seen around town with Tims name on it. Gudsell said he hopes it is a win, win situation for both himself and Ingham Honda. It certainly makes life a lot easier for me getting around. He is loving the life of a professional bike rider but says it is full on. It pretty much consists of eating, racing, sleeping, travelling, recovering, training, more eating and then doing it all again and again for weeks on end. While careful not to get too far ahead of himself, Gudsell says his major goal is the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He would like to thank everyone who has sent him emails, texts, letters and other kinds of support and good wishes while based in France.

Torrington shoots to top of world
By Colin Thorsen Te Awamutu College old girl Georgina Torrington (nee Double) is on top of the world. The 36-year-old headed off ve time American Bianchi champion Vera Koo to become world action pistol shooting ladies individual champion at Blacktown, Sydney. The New Zealand ladies team of Torrington and Hilary Hoover also took out the world teams championship. It came down to a three horse race between New Zealand, Germany and America. Hoover missed three plates, but the American lady shooting with her missed two plates. The two German ladies missed a total of seven plates between them, taking them out of contention for the gold. It left the New Zealand pair with one plate up their sleeve. Torrington clinched the world title by dropping just the one plate midway through the event. The American she was shooting with dropped six plates in total. After Id stopped shooting Hilary came racing over, gave me a huge hug and said gold, we won gold. I have to say I didnt really believe her. It wasnt until I looked around at all the New Zealand team standing there applauding that I knew what I had achieved. Wow words just cant describe that feeling. At this stage Torrington was unaware that she had also won the individual title. It was only when the previous title winner came up and shook my hand and congratulated me that I knew it was for real. Winning the world title has been her goal for the last ve years. She says one of the nicest things to come out of her win has been the amount of happiness that other people have enjoyed from it. My husband (Andrew) and mum and dad (George and Maria) are as proud as punch. Although nowadays living in Waiuku, Torrington says her loyalties for pistol shooting (and rugby) still lie in the Waikato. She is a member of the Hamilton Pistol Club and will always have fond memories of growing up in Te Awamutu. When not on the range, she works in the national sales ofce based in Auckland - for the worlds most global hotel company - InterContinental Hotels Group as business development manager, meetings and conferences. There will be no hanging up of the pistols from this goal setter - she plans to defend her title in 2008.
