East Cobb wins 3rd consecutive 15U title
By ROSS JACOBSON - rjacobson@nwherald.com WOODSTOCK Before the Continental Amateur Baseball Association World Series started 10 days ago, East Cobb (G.A.) Astros coach Dennis Jordan issued a challenge to his team. The Astros emphatically answered Jordans challenge Sunday as East Cobb defeated LIDS Indiana Bulls, 19-0, at Emricson Park to win its third consecutive CABA 15U World Series championship and its fourth in five years. We came off the last few weeks in a very inconsistent mode and I told them before we left that they were not only representing this years team but the two previous years, said Jordan, who was inducted into CABAs Hall of Fame at this years opening ceremonies. East Cobb put on a hitting showcase, scoring a tournament-high 19 runs on 19 hits. Astros hitters were aggressive early and jumped on Bulls starting pitcher Nicholas McCarty for three runs in the first inning. They batted around in the second, pushing five more runs across, and extended the lead to 15-0 after the fourth inning. Thats what has separated this team from a lot of the other teams Ive had, their quality at-bats, Jordan said. We talk about quality at-bats a lot and they dont get themselves out very much. Astros starting pitcher Jared Walsh was dominant after a shaky start, striking out 12 and allowing only 2 hits in a complete-game shutout. It was just nerves in the first couple innings and then I just let it go, said Walsh, who was named the Most Valuable Pitcher for the tournament. Plus I had a nice lead so I didnt have to worry about laying something over the plate and it getting hit hard. Sundays championship game was a far different story from Saturdays Gold Bracket game between East Cobb and Indiana. The Astros, who trailed 3-1 early in Saturdays contest, rallied for a 5-3 victory, and advanced to Sundays championship game. Indiana beat NorCal Baseball Sunday morning to draw a rematch with East Cobb in the championship. Its not so much that we didnt play well, [East Cobb] just came out and took it from us, said Indiana Bulls manager Tony Cookerly. games, but thats the first time a team has come out and taken it to us like that. Walsh retired 12 straight batters before David Oliger singled in the seventh inning. The Bulls loaded the bases with two outs, but Walsh induced a comebacker to the mound to complete the shutout. Drew Small had the only other hit from Indiana, a leadoff single in the first inning. Matt Gonzalez and Cole Miller each hit solo home runs for the Astros. Nine players from Sundays championship were named to the CABA All-tournament team. Oliger, Small, McCarty and Drake Duncan were selected from Indiana while Jacob Bruce, Gonzalez, Chase Scott, Walsh and Miller represented East Cobb. Miller was also named the tournaments Most Valuable Hitter, Most Valuable Player and was given the Sportsmanship award. The CABA World Series marked the conclusion of each teams season and East Cobb finished the year with a record of 52-10. There are a lot of [NCAA Division 1] players here and a couple guys who have the opportunity to get drafted, Jordan said. They are dedicated to what they want to do and I would pretty much say that most of these guys are going to be playing for a while.
