WARNING: Disconnect equipment from the line voltage.
WARNING: Danger! High pressure. Wear safety goggles when working on a liquid adhesive application system.
WARNING: Risk of explosion or fire. Fire, open flames and smoking prohibited.
WARNING: System and material pressurized. Release pressure. Failure to observe may result in serious injury.
CAUTION: Failure to observe may result in equipment damage.

3. Qualified Personnel

Qualified personnel is defined here as individuals who thoroughly understand the equipment and its safe operation, maintenance and repair. Qualified personnel are physically capable of performing the required tasks, familiar with all relevant safety rules and regulations and have been trained to safely install, operate, maintain and/or repair the equipment. It is the responsibility of the company operating the equipment to see that its personnel meet these requirements.

4. Intended Use

The system is designed and intended to be used only for the purpose described in the Description section. Uses not in accordance with that section or as described in this document are considered unintended uses and not in accordance with governing regulations. WARNING: Use of this equipment in ways other than described in this document may result in personal injury, death, or equipment damage. The following actions of the owner or operator of the system are some, but not all, examples of unintended use which would permit Nordson to claim it is not responsible for personal injury or property damage arising from such unintended use:

materials from a third party. These may be required for processing a liquid adhesive, but hazards arising from their use are not necessarily mentioned by the manufacturer of the liquid adhesive.
S Liquid adhesives may still give off vapors when they are processed
correctly. The smell produced can cause some annoyance. This is especially true where liquid adhesives are used that contain solvent, thus requiring the use of breathing equipment e.g. a filter.
S If the prescribed processing conditions are not followed, harmful
decomposition products may develop. Therefore, the vapors must be removed.
S Wash hands well before breaks and when work is finished. S If liquid adhesive comes into contact with eyes or mucous
membranes, rinse well with water -- especially the eyes. Change damp clothes, and seek medical advice if it is swallowed.
S If solvents or separating agents are used to process a liquid
adhesive, follow the safety and disposal information from the manufacturer.

Section 2

Description

1. Intended Use

The liquid adhesive detection system is used to detect the adhesive on different materials, such as paper, carton etc. The most important components of this system are a pattern detection unit and adhesive detection sensors. In this case, the adhesive sensor detects the adhesive and routes problems to the detection unit. The user is visually and audibally informed about faults and machine status. NOTE: Cold glue is referred to as adhesives in this manual.
Unintended Use - Example -
The unit may not be used in an explosive atmosphere.

2. Residual Risks

WARNING: Do not touch the contacts after pulling the main plug. Some of the units electronic components contain residual voltage in the form of a capacitive charge which can produce a light electrical shock when touched. The capacitive charge disappears after approx. 60 seconds.
WARNING: When controlling the solenoid valves, adhesive flows out of liquid adhesive guns. Danger of spraying. Wear safety goggles. Do not mount application guns and program any timer or pattern control unit at the same time.

5. Storage

Pack the unit in suitable packing materials such as styrofoam and sturdy cartons. Protect from humidity, dust and large fluctuations in temperature (condensation).

6. Disposal

Dispose of properly according to local regulations.

7. Encoder

The encoder can be driven by a friction wheel, which bears directly on one of the belts of the production machine. Driving by means of gearwheels or toothed belts is possible alternatively. We recommend using an encoder bracket with a friction wheel for easy installation and adjustment of the encoder (see Fig. 3-2). Also refer to Section Parts.

Gear Ratio

Choose a gear ratio which makes sure that one revolution of the encoder corresponds to a machine feed movement of exactly 500 mm. This guarantees that the control unit can evaluate the production machine speed correctly and a good production is obtained. Max. axial shaft loading: 5 kg (11.02 lbs)

Installation Connection of Adhesive Sensors
A careful and proper mounting of the adhesive sensors is required to obtain optimum results and perfect operation of the liquid adhesive detection system. For this purpose the adhesive sensors have to be mounted on the holding devices with the provided shock absorbers (4).
CAUTION: The connection cable has to be clipped on the holding device with an additional strain relief. Mechanical stress has to be avoided. The important criteria are: 1. The carton or paper must be located in the middle of the two sensor arms (3). Therefore, the guide has to be adjusted accordingly.

KL-AS/10-B

Fig. 3-4 1. 2. 3. 4.

Adhesive Sensor

Potentiometer Sensor measuring point Sensor arms Shock absorber
2. The sensor measuring point (2) must be adjusted symmetrically to the adhesive bead. 3. The distance of the carton guide can be a maximum of 1 - 2 mm larger than the thickness of the carton. NOTE: All connected adhesive sensors must be adjusted if there are metal pieces nearby (refer to Sensor Parameters Section Operation). CAUTION: Never use sharp metallic tools to clean the adhesive sensor surfaces, because the surfaces contain release materials and can be damaged easily. Clean the parts without using solvents. Remove adhesive splashes simply using a cloth.

A careful and proper mounting of the photo cells is required to obtain optimum results and perfect operation of the liquid adhesive detection system.
Connection of Photo Cells
S For dynamic applications, the bending radius must not be less than 6
times the sheath diameter.
S For static applications, the bending radius must be a minimal 3 times
the sheath diameter, provided the fiber optics sheath is not kinked.
S No tension should be exerted on the fiber optics sheaths. S The glass-fibers must be protected from damage at the light-emission
end. One or two photo cell can be used to trigger the adhesive sensors. For continuous and intermittent detection, only one photo cell is necessary (refer to Photo Cell Parameters Section Operation). For single piece detection (when 2 adhesive sensors are used) adhesive sensor 1 is normally triggered by photo cell 1 and adhesive sensor 2 by photo cell 2. If more than 2 adhesive sensors are connected the adhesive sensors 1 and 3 are both triggered by the photo cell 1, whereas the adhesive sensors 2 and 4 are both triggered by the photo cell 2. If only one photo cell is used to trigger all adhesive sensors (max. 4), the adhesive detection unit of the liquid adhesive detection system has to be switched over: 1. Remove the 2 rectangular rubber lined feet from the rear side. 2. Unscrew the 4 PhilipsR screws and remove the frame. 3. Unscrew the 10 PhilipsR screws and remove the rear panel. 4. On the left of the backpanel, flapped down at the rear of the control unit, is a PCB with a 4-pole DIP switch. This DIP switch is used to set the photo cells.
Installation Connection of Photo Cells

(contd.)

The following table shows the two possible modes for a single or a combination unit. NOTE: The liquid adhesive detection system WM 500 is available as a single and a combination unit. The combination unit contains a pattern control unit WM 408 additionally to the single unit. NOTE: The description of the DIP-switches correspond to the arrangement on the rear panel.

Differences between Single and Combination Unit
The liquid adhesive detection system WM 500 is available as a single and a combination unit. The combination unit consists of a single unit with the additionally installed pattern controller WM 408.
The alarm outputs (cast out 1, cast out 2, buzzer and lamp) are break contacts, i.e. normally the contact is closed and it is open in case of an alarm. The marking output is activated together with the alarm output (cast out 1) and a valve connected to the alarm output is actuated.
The alarm outputs are make contacts, i. e. normally the contact is open and it is closed in case of an alarm. So the function of the alarm outputs is compatible with that of the single unit WM 408. The marking output is not activated as with the combination unit the output stages are assigned to the timer. NOTE: The software is identical for the single and the combination unit. It recognizes if the CPU-board is installed into a single or a combination unit, and selects the right function (break contact or make contact) automatically. NOTE: For setting the DIP-switches refer to Chapter Connection of Photo Cells Section Installation.
