"I love my desire! some of the software updates have slowed it down considerably tho, anyone have the same issue? It feels lovely in my hand. "Running out of internal storage already after installing a few apps, but they say it will get fixed with the 2.

The only way I have resolved this, and it has happened at least three times, is to pull of the back cover and pop the battery. And, for the record.

What a great phone.Isnt it nice to be able to do things like music playlists without having to plug in to a computer and connect to itunes.
Bezerik 2:02pm on Saturday, May 29th, 2010
Excellent phone Love this phone. I think it is far better than the iPhone personally. Just does so many things, so well. Great Handset, but... Not wanting to be a sheep and get another iPhone to replace my 3 year old 2G iphone, I decided to buy a Desire.
x8jjth 5:18pm on Sunday, May 16th, 2010
Does it all quickly Battery life is not so good, and the carrier could be better At first, I was disappointed in the phone. After using the Htc Hero, I expected the Desire to have a great speakerphone. I was wrong.

Drop the excuses
Hey, the rules are there for everyone
If you pay attention, you can see this every day. Maybe its not always as obvious as a recent incident in Monroe, N.Y., but the attitude is, nevertheless, there. Many in our culture seem to have convinced themselves that they are above the rules, if they have a good enough excuse. My kid doesnt need to obey the teachers, hes got a good reason. I deserve to cheat on my taxes. And, in the case of the Monroe, N.Y., incident, the issue, as reported by The Associated Press, was that Oleksander Nayda believed the DUI laws didnt apply to him because he was trying to get the cops to help him with a stray dog. That was his excuse. According to the AP report, he, went to a New York village police station seeking help for a stray dog. The problem? He drove there drunk. The 38-year-old man showed up at the police station when he, smelled like alcohol and had a 0.17 blood-alcohol content. Thats more than twice the legal limit. He was arrested for driving while intoxicated. It all turned out OK for the lost dog the man had with him. The dog was taken to an animal shelter. It seems that, though Mr. Nayda may have been trying to do his civic duty, he didnt have the right to endanger the world around him by driving when he was twice as drunk as you can legally be when you are behind the wheel of an automobile. He did not, after all, have a good enough excuse to ignore the law. Will his case convince the rest of our nations scofflaws that they should mend their ways? Not likely. They will still figure they have the right to do everything from speeding when they are late for work to shoplifting when theyve forgotten their wallet. Thats why our police are doing their jobs whether they stop you for speeding through a school zone or pick up your neighbor when hes caught lifting something at a local store. The excuse just doesnt discount the law, whether we believe it should or not. Just ask Oleksander Nayda. Chuck Smith

She had the breast of all possible intentions
Michelle Taylor, 34, was sentenced in Elko, Nev., to life in prison, solely for the crime of forcing a 13-year-old boy to touch her breasts, twice. The sentence was mandatory under a certain state law, but, said her lawyer, She is getting a greater penalty than if she killed the boy. She could be eligible for parole after 10 years. He probably missed a fine point of law, here Baltimore County, Md., Judge Darrell Russell Jr., presiding over a domestic violence case in which the woman obviously had changed her mind about blaming the boyfriend, performed the couples marriage ceremony in his chambers after temporarily halting the boyfriends trial. Earlier, Judge Russell had informed the woman that she could not refuse to testify based on marital privilege because she and the boyfriend were not married. Consequently, as the trial started, she asked the judge to marry them. After the ceremony, she was then granted the marital privilege, and the judge dismissed the charge for lack of evidence. Russell has now been reassigned to less important cases. Thatll be enough of that, young man Swedens Metro newspaper reported that a 21-year-old inmate at Kirseberg prison in Malmo faces discipline for continuing his protests against jail conditions by aiming his gas-passing directly at guards. New Hays exhibit is a load of croc
Dear Editor, So, like, I saw the Super-croc exhibit at the Sternerg Museum of National History the other day in Hays. Two things struck me right away as I looked at the 40-foot-long scale model of this amazing creature. The first was how remarkably similar Sarcosuchus was to modern-day species like the slender snouted crocodile that inhabit fresh-water habitats today in central and western Africa. The slender snouted crocodiles are almost exclusively fish eaters, by the way. Its seems to take away from this whole idea of Sarcosuchus as being a dinosaur killer. Although there is no doubt, it could probably have killed much smaller dinosaurs, which it managed to catch, drag into the water, crush and drown before it completely ripped it apart in shreds. I think it is a stretch, however, to assume Sarcosuchus (AKA: Super crock) ever hunted on Suchomimus, a large bipedal spinosarid dinosaur which had a crocodile-like mouth, and large claws like meat hooks, weighing in as much as 8 to 12 tons. The second thing I noticed was Super-Crocs unusual cat-like eyes and bulbous snout. So Sarcosuchus obviously had the ability to smell its prey on land, as well as ability perhaps to hunt in almost total darkness. The snout also helps crocodiles communicate with each other through its bellows, grunts and groans, especially during the mating season. Based on the size of Super-Crocs snout I can just imagine some of the God-awful sounds it was capable of making out there in the wild. If you havent seen it, I recommend you do its is certainly an experience you will never forget. The sheer size and scale of the models will absolutely blow you away. Robert Tilford, La Crosse

Missouri returns to family assets
One of Cape Girardeaus assets for residents and visitors alike is the Conservation Nature Center in the Cape County Park North. The center, which is operated by the Missouri Department of Conservation adjacent to the departments regional headquarters, recently marked its fifth anniversary. The center features a 160-seat auditorium, classrooms, hands-on exhibits, a scientific research laboratory, freshwater aquariums and an indoor wildlife viewing area. On the grounds around the center, the White Oak Trace features two miles of nature trails that lead hikers over rolling river hills with sinkholes, deep hollows and ravines covered with prominent stands of poplar and oak, according to the MDCs Web site. In addition, native plants provide habitat for hummingbirds, butterflies and other wildlife species. The centers gift shop features a wide variety of educational books, videos and nature-related items. One important partner in bringing the nature center to Cape Girardeau was the Cape Girardeau County Commission. Through this cooperative effort, the nature center offers an outstanding resource. Our goal is to reconnect people with the land, said Sara Turner, the centers manager. Visitors to the center will attest that this facility is living up to its aims. Southeast Missourian

Americans should stick to paper ballots
Dear Editor, I am not afraid of technology. I have a laptop computer and a cell phone and I had ham radio equipment at age 16 which allowed me to interact globally, long before the age of the Internet. When it comes to methods of balloting in elections, I dont have many objections (per se) to electronic voting machines as long as they are uniform and universal. But, that brings me to my point: I feel that all state and federal elections should be done on equal, uniform and identical paper ballots. They should be the same printed format regardless of whether you are an early vote by mail absentee voter, a member of the armed services, or a voter who shows up at the local precincts polling place personally on election day. Being a member of various civic, fraternal and religious groups, I am well accustomed to a presiding official asking, all those in favor, please vote by the usual sign. In all those settings, it is clear, uniform and consistent. It is all voice vote, or paper vote, or a show of raised hands. It is never a partial combination of winks, nods, or raising handkerchiefs. Orderly elections must preserve a sense of sameness. I am a firm believer in one person, one vote. But, if we segregate the mechanisms of how our sign, our vote, is observed and recounted, we have an unequal and inherently unjust system. I favor paper ballots. There is no need for instant gratification by insisting on speedy tabulations via machines. An inauguration is always weeks after any election day anyway. Id rather have accuracy and verifiability, and enable each voter to stand on equal footing with equal ballots of the same uniform nature. James A. Marples, Esbon

About Cottonwood Creek

1858, according to the 1858 table of distances, a mail station was located at the ranch, where Smith sold hay, corn and provisions. The ubiquitous entertainment was also listed. In that year, Abraham Atlantic Moore and his brother Ira stopped at the ranch on a return trip from Santa Fe. Thinking the ranch to be a good investment, they purchased the business, built a second log house, and continued to operate the business. A post office named Moores Ranch was opened in November 1860. Ira Moore was appointed postmaster. In 1861, Abraham, sometimes called Lank, moved to Marion Centre and opened a store. In the following year, he married Nancy Waterman. At the organization of Marion County, he was elected county treasurer. Ira, too, moved to Marion Centre where at a later date he built a grist mill west of the town in partnership with Charles Fuller. In the Moores absence, William Shreve was employed to manage the ranch, and upon his death in 1865, his daughter Charity assumed his place. In the same year, Abraham was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives. Like the other trading establishments east of WaInut Creek, the ranch closed to serve overland traffic after 1866 when the railroad superseded the Santa Fe Trail in the Marion County area.

Seventeen and half miles west of Lost Spring was Cottonwood Creek in present Marion County. Sometimes called Cottonwood Grove for its fine stand of timber, it was the last place on the Santa Fe Trail where wood could be obtained for many miles. There, George Smith, the same George Smith of Lost Spring fame, established a ranch sometime in the mid-1850s. The precise date that Smith came to Cottonwood Creek is unknown but the ranch was in operation when Maj. John Sedgwicks troops arrived at the crossing in 1857. At that time, Smith was conducting business from a single log house. By

gas from page 1A

There are counteractive forces affecting the price of gasoline, said Jason Toews, co-founder of gasbuddy. com which operates KansasGasPrices.com. Some of these are pushing prices up and some are pushing prices down. These factors are affecting the cost of crude oil, which makes up 70 percent of the cost of a gallon of gasoline. The British Petroleum rig which exploded and sank in March is one of the upward factors, Toews said. But, it supplies only a small percentage of the crude used by the United States. So, in the shortterm, the disaster will have little impact. However, the long view may be different. There may be increased political opposition to off-shore drilling, Toews said. A major downward factor is the economic instability in Europe, he said. In the end, the European economy is the stronger force. In the past two weeks, retail gasoline prices dropped 9.25 cents per gallon on average, to $2.8279 per gallon for regular grade, noted the most recent Lundberg Survey of approximately 2,500 U.S. gas stations. It was crude oil that allowed the drop, said Trilby Lundberg. Crude has been sliding this month so far, and its latest two-week drop of $5 per barrel is already hitting wholesale gasoline markets nationally. If it stays around $70 per barrel, the wholesale plunge will play out and the apparent retail margin, at the moment a glittering 27.52 cents on regular, will cave causing another drop at the pump, perhaps 5 to 10 cents per gallon to perhaps $2.75 per gallon or less, she said. This would all be trumped by a rapid, sizable and sustained crude oil price recovery, but a small upward oil price correction would not prevent further pump price slippage. Competition for retail gasoline sales includes price deals beyond postings: In-store rebates by big-box grocers, rebates on consumers bills from oil company credit-card sales and other schemes that speak to a motoring public weighted down by under-employment. Compared with one year ago: Crude is $3.73 per barrel higher; the average retail price is 33.4 cents above; the weighted average wholesale price (branded/unbranded rack, DTW), at $2.07, is 8.56 cents higher; tax on gasoline is 1.35 cents higher; and retail margin is 23.49 cents above that of May 29 last year. Only refiner margin on gasoline, 0.39 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, is left out.

Nothing hurts worse than rejection. Rsum after rsum goes unanswered and a jobseekers confidence plummets in the face of long-term unemployment. Its one thing to be consistently rejected by HR managers but its entirely another to get the cold shoulder from a recruiter. Should jobseekers even bother trying to work with busy recruiters who may not offer much encouragement? Yes and no, say experts. Turning to a recruiter is just one of five methods recommended by Rebecca Martin, chief executive and founder of dear jane, a career services firm in Livermore, Calif. First and foremost is networking, she says. But she also suggests job boards, company websites, professional associations and, yes, recruiters. Full disclosure: She was once a recruiter herself and has written a tip guide called 83 Tips for Working with Corporate and External Recruiters to shine light on what she says is a misperception about recruiters. Why arent they calling back? Martin says. What people dont understand is that recruiters are really busy working on 20 to 200 positions at a time. A competitive market also forces recruiters to keep their noses to the grindstone. Her solutions to working
with a recruiter are straightforward: Follow up consistently and post your rsum to the right place a lot. Ask them [the recruiters] how they would like you to stay in touch and how often, Martin says. She also says that many recruiters live on online job boards. If youre not uploading a rsum every two days, theyre not going to find you, she says. In general, Martin believes that jobseekers must take ownership of their search and spend 25 to 35 hours a week pounding the pavement. In an ideal world, says Rich Gee, CEO of the Stamford, Conn.-based executive advisory firm The Rich Gee Group, recruiters and jobseekers would be partners in the search process. In his estimation, though, just five percent of his clients find jobs through recruiters and even that number he thinks is probably high. Success stories with recruiters often occur when a jobseeker has a friend who has hooked them into a highly specific recruiter and they have an opportunity at the company. Thats when the magic happens, Gee says. Gee suggests trying online job boards and recruiters, but dont spend a lot of time doing it, he says.
