Setting up ADSL2MUE 2.18-AU firmware for Bridge Mode
Rhod Brown Systems Engineer Cisco-Linksys ANZ Preface A small number of ADSL2MUEs shipped in Australia and New Zealand with a non standard Linksys interface. An alternate version of firmware providing the standard Linksys interface will be available from the www.linksys.com.au site at: http://www.linksys.com/international/firmware.asp?intfwid=68&coid=19 Please note the current version of firmware there (1.00.6) is an older version of code, the correct version should be posted by Tuesday 7/6/05. For those users who are waiting on that code, this document demonstrates how to configure the ADSL2MUE with the non standard interface (2.18-AU) in Bridge Mode. Step 1 Power on the ADSL2MUE, and connect your PC into the yellow port labeled Ethernet on the back of the ADSL2MUE. Please ensure that your network card is set to DHCP before you do this, as the ADSL2MUE has an inbuilt DHCP server which is enabled by default, and will assign an IP Address to your PC. Step 2 You can confirm your PC has been assigned an IP Address by going to Start->Run and typing cmd this will bring up a command window. At the prompt below type in ipconfig and hit Enter you should see output as per below:
In this case my PC has been assigned the address 192.168.1.95 in most cases 192.168.1.2 will be assigned. You can also see the default IP Address of the ADSL2MUE here which we will use to access its web interface, namely 192.168.1.1. Step 3 Open up a web browser, remove the default homepage address, and replace it with 192.168.1.1 and hit Enter as per below:
Figure 2 Step 4 Once you have completed Step 3, the login screen in Figure 3 should be displayed. The default username is admin, and the default password is admin once these are entered, hit Enter.
Figure 3 Step 5 The Screen in Figure 4 should be displayed from the menu options in the top bar Select the SETUP option:
Figure 4 Step 6 From here we wish to select the New Connection option on the Left Hand Side Menu as seen on Figure 5:
Figure 5 Step 7 You should now be presented with the screen in Figure 6.
Figure 6 From here we wish to change a number of options to configure Bridge mode the first is to choose the Bridge option from the Type dropdown menu as shown in Figure 7
Figure 7 Step 8 Once the Bridge drop down is selected, you should see the screen in Figure 8
Figure 8 We want to change 3 parameters on this screen give the connection a name, change the VPI to 8, and the VCI to 35 after this is done we hit Apply. NOTE: Make sure no spaces are used in the Name field. Step 9 The screen in Figure 9 should now be displayed this is all we have to do as far as DSL settings are concerned.
Figure 9 Step 10 As we are going to be running the ADSL2MUe in bridge mode, we want our Router to be functioning as the DHCP server, not the modem. If a Linksys router is being used, there is also a probability its default address will be 192.168.1.1 as well for these reasons we are going to disable the DHCP server on the ADSL2MUE, and change its default IP Address. To get to these options we choose LAN Configuration from the LHS menu, and Figure 10 will be displayed
Figure 10 We have a number of options here for these purposes we want to select Ethernet and then hit the Configure link. Step 11 We will now see the screen shown in Figure 11:
Figure 11b Of these options we would like to change 2 things the IP Address Field under Use the following Static IP address (in this case to 192.168.1.2), and select the Server and Relay Off radio button at the bottom of the page. We then hit Apply the screen in Figure 12 will then pop up hit OK, and we will then login to the new address at 192.169.1.2.
Figure 12 Step 13 Nearly there! We now want to commit all these changes we have made to memory to do this we browse to the TOOLS menu, and then follow that to the System Commands option on the LHS menu

Figure 13 Step 14 Select the Save All button the settings will now be maintained through a reboot of the device. All done! We can now disconnect the LAN cable from the PC and plug it into the Internet port of the Router being used. We also now plug in the RJ-11 connector running from the phone line outlet into the ADSL port on the ADSL2MUE. The DSL LED on the front of the ADSL2MUE should flash green for a while it gets line sync, and then go hard green. The Internet light should also go green. Ill now quickly show an example of how to configure the WAN router using a WRT54GX Step 1a Open a web browser and login to the default IP Address of 192.168.1.1. We then wish to select PPPoE as the Internet Connection option, and enter the username and password as provide by your ISP. Then scroll to the bottom of the page and hit the Save Settings button. see Figure 14 below:
Figure 14 Step 2a We can then browse to the Status tab, and the WRT54GX should have already initiated the connection as the settings above were saved a screen like Figure 15 should be shown
You are now online and ready to go!
