Thinking big The "Monitor Supreme" box sets are big and they sound it, too. Magnat doesn't use a lot of words: "The Upgrade Series" is its brief comment on the homepage. But its actually an entry-level product because the "Monitor Supreme" boxes are extremely affordable. They are not lightweights, however: The shelf boxes possess 17-centimetre (cm) woofer drivers and case volumes of around 15 litres. And the mighty 30-centimetre subwoofer cones mean that they come with genuine potential for bass. True beauty comes from inside. It originates in the coils, capacitors, resistors and the loudspeaker chassis. The quality of sound delivered by a loudspeaker chassis depends decisively on the careful compilation of such components. And that developers have put a lot of thought into their efforts already becomes apparent from the good efficiency levels. Ninety-one decibels (dB) constitute a high value for a bass reflex box ("Monitor Supreme 200") and show how good the design of the crossover filter is. Well, it does possesses elements for phase correction, which enhances coordination between the two chassis and which are also supposed to deliver a transparent and differentiated sound. Listening to the Magnat stereo set confirmed these claims. Thanks to the relatively large volume of the interior and the bass reflex design, the box produces a full bass sound without any excessive rumpling and droning. Down to around 60 hertz (Hz), the box offers great fidelity and a differentiated sound in which the individual instruments are always clearly drawn. Where high mid-range levels are concerned, levels drop noticeably before they start to climb again in the trebles. This phenomenon is often called hi-fi and is regarded as desirable by many. But points were still deducted from the neutrality score for this. Criticism is also justified in regard to impulse fidelity: The sound is in no way spongy but such pulsating sounds as snare drums could be more crisp. But saying that almost covers all the points of criticism to be made because these loudspeakers deliver a very lively sound which is well able to handle both loud volumes as well as fine nuances. The top end of the spectrum has also been well executed. High frequencies range gently across the foundation of sound without ever hissing or stabbing.

Film companion

Enhancing the bass range with the "Monitor Supreme Sub 301A" creates a balanced sound in conjunction with the shelf boxes. The frequency diagram shows that the subwoofer's crossover frequency is very low (between 60 and 70 Hz). That means that the 30-centimetre bass is able to concentrate on the really deep frequencies; there are no annoying interferences with or from the other loudspeakers. The second frequency diagram shows how the "Monitor Supreme Center 250" integrates itself into the overall sound. This box supports the important tonal components of the human voice and most musical instruments, the corresponding frequency ranges are up front. Which is basically what a centre speaker is for, although the frequency response in this case is a little extreme. Otherwise, the set appears well-balanced. Thanks to the large woofer chassis in the "Monitor Supreme 200", the sound doesn't appear compressed or distorted even during loud sequences. The loudspeakers' generous case volumes also deliver convincing spaciousness. The sound gives the impression of being disconnected from the speakers and thus creates an authentic experience particularly where films are concerned.

Price and performance

The bad news first: The 5.1 system tested here is not a top-end product. The weaknesses in sound, however, are more of a cosmetic nature. The set's reproduction quality ranges at a very high level and benefits from the careful choice of size for the cones and cases. And so Magnat has impressively withstood the temptation to follow the trend towards "small and chic" and has in particular been able to outdo the (considerably more expensive) small design sets. All of which makes the "Monitor Supreme" range an absolute price-performance hit.
