What the sport-utility world is coming to is this; The Kia Sportage suddenly seems like a cute, practical and, most importantly, affordable alternative purchase. That's alternative in the sense that popular vehicles such as the CHevy Blazer, Isuzu Rodeo and Jeep Cherokee easily cost $20,000. Others such as the Ford Explorer and Jeep Grand Cherokee breathe deeply in the rarefied air of $30,000 or more. The Kia Sportage is in the $15,000 to $20,000 range. V In the near past, bargain shop* pers could browse through the Geo Trackers; Suzuki Sidekicks and Isuzu Amigos of the sport-utility world. They were vehicles that offered low prices apd four-wheel-drive capabilities. Too bad that they also were juvenile, hot very comfortable, often came with canvas and plastic tops that made them a security worry and drove like the little trucks that they were. : Now comes the Sportage, a minisport-ute with lots of good traits. On its heels comes the four-door Geo Tracker hardtop, the/Toyota RAV4, the Suzuki Sidekick Sport and oth* ers. Even Fiord Motor Co., as it pub* licly talks about making upscale Explorers and Broncos for its LincolnMercury dealers, is thinking of making a smaller vehicle to tempt those who can't quite make Explorer payments.,. The Sportage is far from perfect, and it comes from Kia, the South Korean maker whose Sephia sedan finished last in a recent J.D, Power quality survey, But critical reaction to the Sportage (pronounced spor* tedge) is way more positive than it ever was for the Sephia, and that's probably because this new vehicle fills a niche that's expected to grow. I drove a silver-gray Sportage for a week recently. Here is my report:. The ride: The Sportage comes in two very different configurations. The one on sale for most of 1995 has a single-cam four-cylinder that'generates 94 horsepower. You should know that, the Kia public relations staff didn't make this model available to the media. Maybe you should stay away from it, too. Instead, Kia waited until this summer when a dual-cam, 130-horsepower, four-cylinder Sportage became available to introduce the model to the media. You can get the 94-horsepower engine in either two-wheel- or fourwheel-drive models. The stronger engine is only available in fourwheel-drive models. There are two trim levels: base and EX. All models.have four doors plus a rear hatch; V ,; ' I drove the 130-horsepower EX jx4 with a manual transmission. It proved a competent vehicle on the road with plenty of power. The manual shifter was pretty smooth. On the road, the Sportage comes across as something of a cross between a small sedan and a sport-utility. You have the open feeling of a sport-utility, but you're not high off the ground. While you have fourwheel-drive capability, mostly you drive around in two-wheel-drive knowing you can grab small parking

The look: From the outside, the Sportage again achieves something of a mix. Sometimes, it just looks like a tall station wagon. At other times, it's obviously a small sportutility. The roundness of the styling contributes to the vehicle's appeal. It's not tall or boxy by any means. Inside: Once inside the Sportage's cabin, you know that you've entered sport-utility country, There's a large amount of headroom and a good portion of leg and shoulder room. Although it doesn't look it, the Sportage is wider than the Toyota 4Runner, Nissan Pathfinder and the Honda Passport. That equates,to plentiful passenger and cargo room. The cloth bucket seats were comfortable, although nothing special, The entire cabin, done in gray, was a bit understated. Controls: Gauges are plain and\ simple, and that's fine with me. Everything operated easily and was placed properly. f Storage: The Sportage has almost 26 cubic feet of rear storage room, which expands to 55 cubic feet "when the split rear seat back is folded down. ,^>The rear door is a complicated bit of engineering. You can only open it after hitting two buttons on the* dash - one that releases the spare-tire carrier and the other that unlocks the hatch. After that, you still have to. remove a pin lock and look for a latch behind the tire. At the grocery, for instance-^l found it easier to just throw the bags in the rear seat than, mess with the back door, *. I* Safety: Again, and this happened with the debut of the Sephia in 1994, Kia is behind the curve when it comes to air bags. They aren't available in the Sportage, although other sport-utilities are now offering one or.two of them as standard equipment. Rear-wheel, anti-lock brakes are standard, and a limited-slip differential is an option. Last word: Sportage prices place the vehicle at a point to attract younger buyers and those considering adding a sport-utility as a second.or third vehicle in their family fleet. Base prices range from $13,495 for the two-wheel-drive model to $16,195 for the four-wheel-drive EX. Automatic transmissions are a $1,000 option. Fully equipped models range from $15,765 to $20,465, including destination charges. NUTS AND BOLTS What we drove: 1995 Kia* Sportage EX, a four-door compact sport-utility with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a five-speed manual transmission. price: $16,195. Price as tested (includes options, California emissions and delivery.charge): $18,475 I Curb weight: 3,280 pounds Length: 167.3 inches Turning circle (curb to curb): 34.8 feet Standard features: Rear-wheel anti-lock brakes; tilt steering; power windows and locks; cruise control; split, folding rear seat; tinted glass; rear window wiper/defroster. Options on test vehicle: Air conditioning; AM/FM stereo with cassette; rear-door spare tire carrier; floor mats; roof rack.
