Metz Mecablitz - Hot-shoe

The TTL function of the mecablitz 44 AF-4 is the easy way to produce perfect flash shots. The TTL-capable zoom compact flash unit minimizes the risk of red-eye effect, is powerful (with a GN of 44) and exceptionally simple to operate. Only two functional keys are now necessary on account of the logical menu control. The range of standard capabilities of the 44 AF-4 includes manual use, selectable partial light output level, plus a number of interesting special functions such as fill-in flash in ... Read more

As expected from Metz - the quality of build is superb. The construction is robust and feels really secure mounted on the hot-shoe.

CREATIVE FLASH LIGHTING WITH METZ:
Everything you need for our photo example is: a Metz color filter set, and a Metz mecablitz such as the 45 CL-1 or the 45 CL -4 digital. If the main subject is to be accentuated with colourful light, then a second flash is necessary for the separate foreground lighting. This can be either set directly on the camera, or it can be unchained, and therefore used separately from the camera. (For example, over a connection cable). A compact flash unit such as the mecablitz 44 MZ-2 can be used for this purpose.

Metz mecablitz 28 CS-2 digital
disappointed about dark photos merely because the flash integrated in your camera was not powerful enough? And have you ever wanted a handy compact flash unit that can be used separately from the camera! Well Metz offers the perfect solution with the mecablitz 28 CS-2 digital - optimally adapted in performance and size to compact digital cameras! The fun factor is enhanced with the self-leaning slave mode and the ingenious EASY-Mode. For the very first time the flash shot taken can be directly influenced with the instant
In our photo example the main light is coming from the left (28 CS - 2 digital in automatic flash mode). The fill - in from the front is performed by a Metz mecablitz 54 MZ - 4 (also used in automatic flash mode). To intensify the character of the side lighting, the latter flash was used with one half light output. An operating method that is achieved due to a changed sensitivity adjustment (ISO number has been doubled).

Flash tip!

For cameras with and without flash connection! Those who use an external flash unit such as the Metz mecablitz 28 CS-2 digital in daylight can expect much better results. Even on the beach! Particularly when highlighting subject areas that are located in dense shadows. The ingenious feature are the +/- buttons combined with "learning by doing". If the exposure proves to be too bright with flash, simply press the minus button or, inversely, press the plus button when the result is too dark. And this can be continued until the perfect picture impression is created. Moreover, a flexible learning function ensures that cameras with a preflash function can be used.

Metz mecablitz 28 AF-3 digital
Be it a garden party, wedding, child's birthday or a luxury cruise - They are all those irretrievable moments in life that build up in the course of the years. Yet, in spite of the importance of the moment, the photographic results often turn out to be disappointing: Sometimes faces are too dark on account of the high contrasts between light and shadows. And then the colours are too flat because the camera's internal flash was not powerful enough. The real answer is to be on the safe side with a Metz mecablitz 28 AF-3 digital. This small, clip-on flash unit is designed in technology and size to match optimally the compact digital cameras.
Experiment occasionally with longer exposure times. In this case you can reckon with different types of blur effects dependent on whether you move the camera or if it is fixed. In our photo example the camera has been moved in the direction of the subject (exposure time 1/ sec.). At any 4 event, it is worth it to synchronise the flash unit to the 2nd shutter curtain. The blur effects will appear more realistic for this reason, especially by night time exposures with moving light sources, (for example car headlights).

Those who are looking for a precise automatic flash unit will be well served by the mecablitz 36 C-2.
The range of a flash unit is determined by the guide number. The higher the number, the wider the range. Pay close attention when making comparisons however, that the indication is based on the same focal length. If you wish to increase the range of your flash unit, then you may consider using a film with higher sensitivity, because they require less light! This effect is excellent for use in manual mode. The higher sensitivity is adjusted on the flash unit.
Three different automatic apertures (8, 4, 2, at ISO 100/21) as well as a manually adjustable zoom reflector are available with it, with which the light output can be optimized within the focal length 28-85 mm. Clearly more effective than the flash integrated into the camera is the currently smallest compact flash unit

THE SCA SYSTEM
The camera can change, Metz stays! Metz mecablitz flash units have always been known for their flexibility. Thanks to the well-developed SCA adapter system they can be used on nearly every SLR camera. And: This also applies to the future! The SCA 3002 adapter system is a further development of the proven SCA 3000 system. The digital data exchange between camera and flash makes a variety of new functions possible. Digital and film The photographer of today has to have both digital and film cameras in their bag of tricks. Obviously, it would be ideal to have a flash unit that is compatible with both camera types. This is where the SCA 3083 digital slave adapter comes to the rescue. This adapter has a vast adaptability range, allowing the current range of Metz SCA flash units to be used with cameras, film or digital, with or without hot shoe connection. Three slave functions are available.

1 Convenient - Cordless TTL or auto flash control. In this case nothing has to be set on the slave flash unit. A controlling Metz flash unit on the camera controls one or several external slave flash units in the cordless mode.
Direct connection: Camera and flash form an optimally functioning unit, thanks to the SCA adapter.
Split connection: For hand-held flash guns or for unchained flash use on all SCA capable flash units.
Wireless flash lighting: The SCA 3083 Digital Slave Adapter allows cordless flash triggering with all SCA compatible flash units.
2 Individual light control with slave flash function. The slave flash with SCA 3083 digital adapter offers the photographer the maximum creative freedom. The required out put of the slave flash can be manually set for targeted light levels to achieve specific effects or to brighten up dark areas in the picture. The controlling flash unit can be used in automatic or manual modes. 3 Slave flash function with preflash suppression. Digital cameras without any hot shoe and operating with a pre-flash function. The SCA 3083 with a special lag-time circuit built into it will help the Metz flash fire with the main flash and not fire on the preflash of the camera.

Metz mecablitz flash units have always been known for their great flexibility. A strength that is also noticeable in connection with digital cameras. To find out which Metz mecablitz is compatible with which model it is necessary however to take a close look at the respective flash connection. Generally, digital cameras can be classified into the three following groups.
2. Digital compact cameras
The mini Metz mecablitz 28 AF-3 was specifically developed for compact digital cameras with hotshoe contact. More powerful than the integrated flash, yet optimally adapted in size and technology specifically to the given Canon, Konica Minolta, Nikon or Olympus model! This is the ideal solution for fans of compactness who do not want to forego perfect flash shots.
28 CS-2 digital can be used with or without telescopic bracket

H METZ MECABLITZ.

1. Digital SLR cameras
Every type of flash unit with an SCA adapter can be considered for use with this group of digital cameras. In addition, the various Metz mecablitz dedicated versions are available to choose from these are flash units with specific connections, that are constructed for certain camera brands. For instance Metz mecablitz 58 AF-1 and Metz mecablitz 44 AF-4, thus making various special functions available.

LEXICON.

Key Function Locking of the operating elements. Protects against unintended adjustments.
Rapid Function The rapid mode shortens the flash recycling time with diminished light output.
Program Memory Offers space for up to nine individual flash settings (can be activated at the touch of a button).
Battery Tester The battery tester indicates at the touch of a button whether the battery capacity is sufficient.
Automatic cut-off Saves energy if you have forgotten to turn off the flash unit after use, or during longer periods between uses.

Power Source Indicates which power source is to be used for the corresponding flash unit.
Wake-up Makes switching on a flash unit after a longer break possible just by tapping on the camera release button.
SCA-3002-Adapter-System Further development of the 3000 series system with updateable software possibility and extended special functions. All of the adjustments are conducted directly on the flash unit.
SCA-3000-Adapter-System Supports additional special functions with digital data transmission.
Tilt and Swivel Reflector Can be adjusted within the given range both horizontally and vertically. (For example for indirect flash lighting).
SCA-300-Adapter-System Recommended for use with Metz flash units on non AF-SLR cameras from all normally available brands. Supports their specific flash special functions. (Can also be used on flash units that are intended for the SCA-3000 or the SCA-3002 system. In this case not all of the special functions are available.
Power Zoom Automatic adjustment of the flash reflector to the corresponding lens focal length (in connection with SCA 3000 or SCA 3002 adapters).
Flash Bracketing Automatic flash bracketing gives 3 consecutive frames, one over and one under the middle calculate exposure. Range can be selected up to +/- 3 stops in 1/3rd stop increments.
Extended Zoom Illumination angle is set at one level wider than the zoom setting on the camera.
Manual Zoom Illumination angle of the flash reflector is set by hand. REAR Synchronisation on the 2nd shutter curtain for natural blur effects. (see page 28/29). Wide-angle Attachment Increase the illumination angle of the flash unit. Either integrated in the corresponding model or attacheable as an accessory.
Guide Number Provides information about the range of a flash unit (dependent on the corresponding focal length).
Illumination Indicates the shortest focal length (= widest-angle), in which the corresponding flash unit will provide even illumination.
Secondary Reflector To fill-in the shadows sometimes created when using an indirect flash.
TTL Mode Light is measured directly off the film plane, when enough light has been recorded power is cut to the flash, ensuring correct exposure.
Flash Ready Indicator Indicates when the capacitor has sufficient power for a flash shot.
ADI Enhanced flash exposure metering (Minolta specific).
Correct Exposure Indication Lights up as soon as the exposure has been correctly lit.
E-TTL Refined TTL flash exposure measurement (Canon specific).

Technical specifications

Full description

The TTL function of the mecablitz 44 AF-4 is the easy way to produce perfect flash shots. The TTL-capable zoom compact flash unit minimizes the risk of red-eye effect, is powerful (with a GN of 44) and exceptionally simple to operate. Only two functional keys are now necessary on account of the logical menu control. The range of standard capabilities of the 44 AF-4 includes manual use, selectable partial light output level, plus a number of interesting special functions such as fill-in flash in daylight to brighten up shadows that are too dense. For more personal, creative control it is possible to change over to manual mode and set a partial light output level when the need arises. Furthermore, the model also features second curtain synchronization, which is important for natural looking slow sync effects.
