Using at the same time as other heating appliances that depend on the air from the room Warning - danger of toxic fumes
using the cooker hood at the same time and in the same room or area of the house as another heating appliance which depends on the air in the room. Such appliances include gas, oil, wood or coal-fired boilers and heaters, continuous flow or other water heaters, gas hobs, cookers or ovens which draw air in from the room and duct exhaust gases out through a chimney or extraction ducting. When used in extraction mode, with or without an external motor fitted, the appliance draws air in from the room in which it is installed and from neighbouring rooms. If there is insufficient air, an underpressure will occur. The heating appliance may be starved of oxygen, impairing combustion. Harmful gases could be drawn out of the chimney or extraction ducting back into the room, with potentially fatal consequences.
~ Great care should be taken when
In order to ensure safe operation, and to prevent gases given off by the heating appliances from being drawn back into the room when the cooker hood and the heater are in operation simultaneously, an underpressure of 0.04 mbar (4 pa) is the maximum permissible in the room. One of the following technical measures may be necessary to ensure safe operation. If the only way of ensuring adequate ventilation is via an open window, a window contact switch should be fitted to ensure that the cooker hood can only operate when the window is opened sufficiently. A window contact switch kit is available from good builders' merchants. Take care when ventilating the room through an open window that ventilation is not impaired by a closed blind or curtain. The cooker hood can be set up to automatically switch on an air intake fan or open a motorised inlet flap when it is switched on. Ventilation can be maintained by air inlets which must not be blocked, in windows, doors and outside wall vents, or by other technical measures, such as ensuring that the cooker hood can only be switched on when the heating appliance is switched off or vice versa. A ventilation brick alone is not generally sufficient to ensure safe ventilation. The cooker hood can be set up to automatically switch off a heating appliance which also depends on the air from the room when it is switched on. The Miele DSM 400 control module offers the possibility of combining other components with the cooker hood (see "Operation with Control module DSM 400"). It is available to purchase as an optional extra. If in any doubt, the advice of a qualified builder, gas fitter (Corgi registered in the UK) or electrician must be sought. If the hood is being operated in recirculation mode, the above restrictions do not apply.
Accessories
~ Only use genuine Miele spare parts and accessories with this appliance. If spare parts or accessories from other manufacturers are used, this will invalidate the guarantee, and Miele cannot accept liability.
The manufacturer cannot be held liable for damage caused by non-compliance with these Warning and Safety instructions.
Modes of operation
The cooker hood works with. air extraction:. air recirculation: (available as an optional extra with a conversion kit and charcoal filter: see "Technical Data")
The air is drawn in and cleaned by the stainless steel outer filter and the grease filter, and then directed outside. If the on-site ventilation system does not have a non-return flap, then the non-return flap supplied with the appliance must be fitted Having a non-return flap fitted in the ducting ensures that air, once ducted to the outside, cannot get back into the room again. The flap is closed when the cooker hood is switched off. When the cooker hood is switched on, the non-return flap opens for the cooking vapours to be blown directly outside.
The air is drawn in and cleaned first by the stainless steel outer filter and the grease filter and then by a charcoal filter. The cleaned air is then recirculated back into the kitchen through grilles in the top of the cooker hood extension piece. Charcoal filters are available to order through your Dealer / Chartered Agent or the Miele Spare Parts Department. (See back cover for contact details and "Technical Data" for model number). Before using the cooker hood in recirculation mode, ensure that the charcoal filter is in place. See "Cleaning and care". an external motor: (EXT models only)
EXT models are designed to be connected to an external motor located outside the room. The external motor is connected to the cooker hood by means of a control cable, and is operated by the controls on the cooker hood.

Cleaning and care
Housing
Before any cleaning or maintenance work is carried out, disconnect the cooker hood from the mains supply. Ensure that: it is switched off at the wall socket and the plug removed, or the fuse is withdrawn from the fused spur connection unit, or the mains fuse is withdrawn, or the screw-out fuse is removed (in countries where this is applicable). A range of Miele branded cleaning and conditioning agents are available to order through your Miele Dealer / Chartered Agent, the Miele Spare Parts Department, or via the internet on www.miele-shop.com. E-Cloth ^ A microfibre E-Cloth is available from the Miele UK Spare Parts Department, which is suitable for cleaning surfaces such as stainless steel, glass, plastic and chrome without the use of chemicals. It can be washed 300 times. General notes The surfaces and controls are susceptible to scratches and abrasions. Please observe the following cleaning instructions. ^ All external surfaces and controls can be cleaned using a Miele E-Cloth, or with warm water and a small amount of washing-up liquid applied with a well wrung-out soft sponge or cloth. ^ Wipe the surfaces dry using a soft cloth. Do not use too much water when cleaning the controls. Water could penetrate into the electronics and cause damage. Do not use any of the following to clean any surfaces: cleaning agents containing soda, acids, chlorides or solvents, abrasive cleaning agents, e.g. powder cleaners and cream cleaners. abrasive sponges, e.g. pot scourers, or sponges which have been previously used with abrasive cleaning agents. Please note the following advice for cleaning different surfaces.
^ To remove the outer filter pull down on the quick-release catches. When doing this, hold the filter securely so that it does not fall on the hob surface below. To remove the grease filter
^ Hold the grease filter by the grip, and pull it downwards to remove it. Take care not to let the grease filter fall onto the hob.
^ After cleaning, leave the filters to dry for a while on an absorbent surface before putting them back in place. ^ When removing the filters for cleaning, also clean off any residues of oil or fat from the now accessible housing to prevent the risk of these catching fire. ^ After cleaning the filters, press the grease filter control for approximately 3 seconds to reset the operating hours counter. The indicator lamp will go out. If the stainless steel outer filter and the grease filter are cleaned before the operating hours counter has reached its maximum, the grease filter control should be pressed for approximately 6 seconds to reset the counter to zero. To replace the grease filter To replace the stainless steel outer filter
^ Fit the outer filter into the appliance so that it hooks into the retainers at the back, then push it upwards at the front and make sure it engages in the quick-release mechanism.
^ Holding the grease filter at an angle, fit it into the front of the chimney and then push it into position along the front edge. ^ Then push it up into position at the back, making sure it clicks into position on both sides.
Fitting and replacing the charcoal filter
If the cooker hood is connected for recirculation, a charcoal filter must be inserted in addition to the grease filter. This is designed to absorb cooking odours. It is fitted in the chimney above the grease filter. Replacement charcoal filters can be obtained from your Dealer / Chartered Agent or the Miele Spare Parts department. See back cover for contact details, and "Technical data" for type and reference number. ^ Before fitting or replacing the charcoal filter, the outer filter and the grease filter must first be taken out. See previous section for instructions on how to do this. ^ Fit the filter into the front of the chimney; push it upwards at the back, and press it firmly into position. ^ Replace the grease filter and then the outer filter. When fitting for the first time: ^ Activate the operating hours counter (see "Use"). ^ When fitting for the first time: A guide is installed for extraction mode which has to be removed for recirculation mode. Loosen the screws on it, and remove it.
^ To remove the charcoal filter, pull down on the tab at the back of the filter. ^ Take the new filter out of its packaging.
Always replace the filter immediately if the lamp for the charcoal filter touch control comes on, or if it is no longer effective in absorbing kitchen odours. It should be replaced at least every 6 months. Used charcoal filters can be disposed of with the normal household waste. ^ After fitting a new charcoal filter, press the charcoal filter touch control for approximately 3 seconds to re-set the operating hours counter. The indicator lamp will go out. If a charcoal filter is replaced before the operating hours counter has reached its maximum, the charcoal filter touch control should be pressed for approximately 6 seconds to reset the counter.
Changing a halogen lamp
^ Before any cleaning or maintenance work, disconnect the cooker hood from the mains supply. Ensure that: it is switched off at the isolator, or it is switched off at the wall socket and the plug is withdrawn, or the fuse from the fused spur connection unit is withdrawn, or the mains fuse is disconnected, or the screw-out fuse is removed (in countries where this is applicable). ^ Remove the stainless steel outer filter (see "Cleaning and care"). ^ Pull the halogen lamp out of its socket. Take care not to let the lamp fall onto the hob below. ^ Insert the new halogen lamp into its socket and carefully push into position. When replacing a defective lamp it is suggested that you use exactly the same type of lamp (see "Technical data" for lamp specification).
,Exercise caution when changing halogen lamps. They get very hot during use and remain hot for some time after being switched off. Let them cool down before you change them.

For recirculation mode, only a connection socket needs to be fitted. Connection for air extraction C 150 mm, or C 125 mm with reducing collar. Safety distance between hob and cooker hood (S) When planning the installation height of your cooker hood, the minimum safety distances between the top of a cooker or hob and the bottom of the cooker hood are as follows, unless a greater distance is specified by the manufacturer of your cooking appliance: 450 mm (GB), 600 mm (AU, NZ) above electric hobs and cookers, 650 mm above an open grill or deep fat fryer, 650 mm above gas hobs and cookers. See "Warning and Safety" instructions for further information. If this cooker hood is installed above a Miele Wok CS 1028 CombiSet appliance, a minimum safety distance of 760 mm must be maintained between the burner and the lower edge of the cooker hood. When deciding on the safety distance between the hob and cooker hood, please note that a distance of 650 mm above electric cookers/hobs may be preferable to give more working space under the hood. Account should also be taken of the height of the person who will be using the hood most often. The person should have sufficient space to work comfortably at the hob, and also be able to reach the hood controls with ease. If positioned too high, extraction will be inefficient. The height of the cooking appliance must be taken into account when planning the installation height of the cooker hood.

Dismantling
Before installation, it is important to read the information given on the following pages as well as the "Appliance dimensions" and the "Warning and Safety instructions" at the beginning of this booklet. This is particularly crucial when using the cooker hood at the same time as a heating appliance that relies on oxygen from the same room to avoid the danger of toxic fumes building up. Should the appliance need to be dismantled, follow the installation instructions in reverse order as described on the Installation sheet. A lever is supplied to assist with the removal of the tower.
Installation instructions
See enclosed Installation sheet for instructions on how to install this appliance.
Protective foil
(on stainless steel appliances) The tower and extension piece have protective foil around them to prevent them being damaged during transport. Please remove this foil before fitting them. It can be peeled off easily.
^ After loosening the fixing screws on the tower, push the lever between the tower and the extension piece to lever the tower out of its fixings.
Connection for air extraction
Important: To avoid the danger of toxic fumes, please observe the Warning and Safety instructions. This is especially crucial when using the cooker hood at the same time as another heating appliance which relies on air from the same room. The cooker hood should be installed according to local and national building regulations. Seek approval from the building inspector where necessary. Only use smooth pipes or flexible hoses made from non-flammable materials for the extraction ducting. When using an external motor, make sure that the exhaust ducting is sufficiently rigid. The external motor can cause an underpressure which can result in the exhaust ducting distorting. To achieve the greatest possible air extraction with the lowest noise level, please note the following: To ensure efficient air extraction, the diameter of the exhaust ducting should not be less than 150 mm. If flat ducting is being used, the cross-section must not be smaller than the cross-section of the exhaust connection. All ducting, pipework and fittings must be of non-flammable materials. The exhaust ducting should be as short and straight as possible. Only use wide radius bends. The exhaust ducting should not be kinked or compressed. Ensure that all connections are strong and airtight. Where ducting is horizontal, it must be laid to slope away at at least 1 cm per metre. This is to ensure that condensate cannot drain back into the cooker hood.
If the exhaust air is to be ducted into the open air, the installation of a telescopic wall vent or roof vent (available as an optional accessory) is recommended.
Condensate trap
(optional accessory)
If the exhaust air is to be ducted into a vent flue, the ducting must be directed in the flow direction of the flue. Important: If the exhaust ducting is to run through rooms, ceiling space etc. where there may be great variations in temperature between the different areas, the problem of condensation will need to be addressed. The exhaust ducting will need to be suitably insulated. In addition to insulating the exhaust ducting, we recommend that a suitable condensate trap is also installed to collect and evaporate any condensate which may occur. Condensate traps are available for C 125 mm or C 150 mm ducting. When installing a condensate trap, ensure that it is positioned vertically and if possible directly above the exhaust connection. The arrow on the housing indicates the direction of air-flow. Cooker hoods designed for use with an external motor (.EXT models) have an integrated condensate trap.
Silencer
(optional accessory).with air extraction: The silencer not only reduces noise from the fan, but also sounds from outside (e.g. traffic noise). For this reason the silencer must be positioned as close as possible to where the ducting leaves the building a.air extraction with external fan: To minimise noise from the fan in the kitchen, the silencer should be positioned in front of the external fan b if possible, or if the ducting is long, then in the ducting inside the cooker hood itself c. In the case of an external fan placed inside the house, fitting a silencer behind the external fan d reduces the noise of the fan outside the house.
To achieve even further reductions in noise levels, a special silencer can be fitted in the ducting system.
In all modes of operation, the most effective noise reductions are achieved if two silencers are fitted in the system.
Electrical connection
All electrical work should be undertaken by a suitably qualified and competent person in strict accordance with current national and local safety regulations (BS 7671 in the UK). Installation, repairs and other work by unqualified persons could be dangerous, for which the manufacturer cannot be held liable. Ensure power is not supplied to the appliance until after installation or repair work has been carried out. Do not connect the appliance to the mains electricity supply by an extension lead. These do not guarantee the required safety of the appliance. The connection data is given on the data plate. This is visible when the grease filters have been removed. Ensure that this data matches the household mains supply. Connection of this appliance should be made via a suitable isolator or a double pole fused spur connection unit which complies with national and local safety regulations and the On-Off switch should be easily accessible after the appliance has been built in. When switched off there must be an all-pole contact gap of 3 mm in the switch (including switch, fuses and relays according to EN 60335). If the switch is not accessible after installation (depending on country), an additional means of disconnection must be provided for all poles. For extra safety it is advisable to protect the appliance with a suitable residual current device (RCD). Contact a qualified electrician for advice. Operation with Control module DSM 400
The Miele DSM 400 Control module can be used to combine the cooker hood with other components. It enables the following: Connection to a window contact switch If adequate ventilation to the room can only be ensured by having a window open when the cooker hood is in use at the same time as a heating appliance which depends on the air from the same room, then the control module can be used to connect a window contact switch (not supplied) to the appliance. Once connnected, the cooker hood can only be operated when the window is sufficiently open (see also "Warning and Safety instructions"). When the window is closed the cooker hood fan cannot be switched on. The indicator lamp for the On/Off touch control on the cooker hood will flash. The same applies to operation with an external motor (depending on model). The cooker hood lighting is not affected by this. Take care when ventilating the room through an open window that ventilation is not impaired by a closed blind or curtain. If the control module is disconnected in order to operate the cooker hood without the window contact switch (e.g. after moving house) the cooker hood electronics must be reset by a Miele service technician.
Potential free connection This enables an external appliance to be controlled according to the switch setting on the cooker hood fan. For instance it can be used to ensure a sufficient supply of fresh air when the cooker hood and a heating appliance which also depends on the air in the room are being used together, by switching on an air intake fan, or opening a motorised inlet flap as soon as the cooker hood fan is switched on. It is important to ensure that the fan power is sufficient and that the air intake has a suitable cross-sectional diameter. If a sufficient air intake cannot be guaranteed, then the potential free contact will enable a heating appliance, which depends on air in the same room as a cooker hood, to be switched off when the cooker hood is in operation. See also "Warning and Safety" instructions.
Connection to a light switch The control module can be used to switch on the cooker hood lighting and also to dim it, depending on model, via a light switch in the house. Installation
The tower needs to be removed before the control module can be fitted to the fan unit. The control module is supplied with its own detailed operating and installation instructions.

Plywood backing
The majority of the weight of the installed ventilation system will be supported by the lower retaining plate. It must be firmly attached to the stud framing behind the drywall. If studs are not available in the required locations, a plywood backing (min. " (13 mm) thick) spanning at least two studs must be installed. Failure to adequately support the weight as stated may result in the ventilation system falling off the wall, causing personal injury and property damage. ^ Find the studs to the left and right of the mounting location by tapping the wall or using a stud finder. ^ Mark a vertical cutting line along the center of each stud. Be careful not to damage any wiring or plumbing that may be located behind the wall. Make sure that the power supply to the area where this installation is being performed has been turned off at the breaker panel before cutting into the wall. ^ Remove the drywall between the cutting lines and replace it with plywood of a matching thickness (min. " (13 mm) thick). Tape the joints and refinish the wall. ^ Proceed to the included installation sheet to complete the installation.
(If plywood backing is not needed, proceed to the included installation sheet.)
To install a plywood backing
^ Determine and mark the location of the retaining plate for the canopy as outlined on the installation sheet. ^ Make a cutting line 3" (76 mm) above and 3" (76 mm) below the outline of the retaining plate.

1) Air outlet installed upwards for recirculation mode 2) and 3) Cut out area in wall or ceiling for entrance of 6" (150 mm) ductwork or 5" (125 mm) ductwork with a reducing collar. For recirculation mode only 2) and outlet installation are necessary. Distance between cooktop and hood (S) The installation procedure differs depending on the model and venting method. Before beginning the installation: ^ Read all instructions. ^ Determine height (S), regarding the users body height, i.e. a comfortable height for the user. However, the greater the distance, the less effectively cooking odors are drawn in. ^ If the hood is fitted flush to the ceiling make sure that the remaining distance to the ceiling is not greater or less than appliance height (H). Standard unit height H Air Extraction. 28 3/16" - 38". (716 - 966 mm) Recirculation. 33" - 42". (836 - 1066 mm) If the standard unit height H is not suitable to the kitchens ceiling height, longer optional chimney extensions are available from your Miele dealer or Miele. To fit the lower chimney section, the distance between the top of the chimney and the ceiling must be at least 7/8" (20 mm).
Do not install this exhaust hood over cooktops burning solid fuel. Provided a larger distance is not given by the manufacturer of the cooktop, follow the minimum safety distances between a cooktop and the bottom of the hood: - 22" (550 mm) above electric cooktops, - 30" (762 mm) above gas cooktops, - 26" (650 mm) above an open electric grill or an open electric boiler/fryer. If local building codes require a greater safety distance, follow their requirement. If there is more than one appliance beneath the hood and they have different minimum safety distances always select the greater distance. See "Important Safety Instructions" for further information.
Installation
Installation instructions
^ See the enclosed installation instruction sheet. ^ Please read the "Important Safety Instructions" and Installation instructions before installing this hood.
Dismantling
If the hood needs to be disassembled, follow the instructions on the installation sheet in the reverse order. A lever is enclosed for easier removal of the chimney extension.
Protective film
The casing is covered with a protective film to prevent scratching during transport. ^ Peel off the film before installing the casing parts.
^ After removing the screws from the chimney, slide the lever between the chimney and the chimney extension and gently apply pressure to ease the chimney from its hooks.
Air extraction ,WARNING
Danger of toxic fumes. Gas cooking appliances release carbon monoxide that can be harmful or fatal if inhaled. The exhaust gases extracted by the hood should be vented outside of the building only. Do not terminate the exhaust ducts in attics, garages, crawlspaces, etc. To reduce the risk of fire, only use metal ductwork. Please read and follow the "IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS" to reduce the risk of personal injury. Follow all local building codes when installing the hood. Exhaust ducting and connections The ducting should be as short and straight as possible, and the number of sharp bends should be minimized. For most efficient air extraction, the diameter of the ductwork should not be less than 6" (150 mm). Use of flat ducts also reduces the air extraction efficiency. Noise levels of the hood will increase if flat ducts or round ducts of less than 6" (150 mm) in diameter are used. Use smooth or flexible pipes made from approved non-flammable materials for exhaust ducting. Where the ductwork is horizontal, it must slope away from the hood at least 1/8" per foot (1 cm per meter) to prevent condensation dripping into the appliance. If the exhaust is ducted through an outside wall, a Miele Telescopic Wall Vent can be used.
Air extraction
Condensate trap
optional accessory
If the exhaust is ducted into an inactive flue, the air must be expelled parallel to the flow direction of the flue. Never connect an exhaust hood to an active chimney, dryer vent, flue, or room venting ductwork. Seek professional advice before connecting an exhaust hood vent to an existing, inactive chimney or vent flue. Important If the ductwork runs through rooms, ceilings, garages, etc. where temperature variations exist, it may need to be insulated to reduce condensation.
In some cases, a condensate trap may also be required to collect and evaporate any condensate which may occur. This optional accessory is available for ducts 5" (125 mm) and 5 7/8" (150 mm) in diameter. ^ When installing a condensate trap, ensure that it is positioned vertically and if possible directly above the exhaust outlet.
