Angela Long chose mellow light oak cabinetry from Stonehams Strata range for a timeless yet contemporary feel. Stainless steel has been introduced to the scheme with appliances, sleek bar handles and tambour units at the far end of the room, which conceal two existing boilers
This curved end cupboard, next to the fridge freezer, is one of Angelas favourites. White china and glassware are situated at a convenient height and the units curves also serve to guide visitors into the kitchen. The space above the fridge freezer has been used to house an oak wine rack, which can accommodate 16 bottles
Im so glad I have the extra space at the end of the kitchen with the peninsula, as it allows me to face into the room and be more sociable when Im preparing meals Angela Long

fter Angela and Mike Longs children had own the nest the couple started to think about downsizing. Theyd lived in their farmhouse in East Sussex for more than 20 years and all of the rooms needed a makeover. The pine kitchen, which had once been a pleasing honey colour, had yellowed over time, says Angela, and the lick of cream paint we gave it a few years ago didnt really solve any problems. As Angela continued to talk about moving, Mike was quick to suggest that a new kitchen might be a worthwhile investment as it would help to sell the property. Im inclined to think that it was a ploy to take my mind off house-hunting, laughs Angela, but it worked. I started to imagine the sorts of designs that would suit a rural setting. I felt it was time for a different look and thought a contemporary style with a traditional feel to it would work. With the help of David Haugh at David Haugh Furniture, the Longs chose a Stoneham design in light oak. It was the curved cupboards and granite detailing that caught my eye, recalls Angela. One of our friends is a landscape gardener and he pointed out that curves are always pleasing to look at, and its so true. The Longs were able to increase the length of the kitchen by knocking through to their utility room. Doing this also allowed more natural light in while providing space for the peninsula. The couple were keen to have modern-style appliances and were quite taken with Miele. Im pleased with the induction hob, as its so easy to clean, but Ive only ever cooked on gas so I also chose a single gas ring, Angela says. There is however, one appliance that Angela is hesitant about using. Im still trying to get to grips with the steam oven, then Ill be able to experiment a bit more with my dinner party recipes, she smiles.
The Star Galaxy granite surrounding the three hobs has been shaped to mirror the curves of the drawers below. Cooking utensils and cutlery are close to hand in the top drawer and pans are stored in the two drawers below. Having the gas and induction hobs provides Angela with plenty of cooking choice. I couldnt be without the gas hob, as I love to cook stir-fries, she enthuses

Angela stores her occasional white china, from House of Frasers Linea range, in an elegant etched glass and oak cabinet. The clever bi-fold door with two panels of opaque glass opens upwards to reveal the crockery. The walls have been painted in Powder Blue by Farrow & Ball to create a rustic contrast with the oak
Angela made sure the tea-making station was conveniently situated by the back door, so it is on hand for a quick cuppa when coming in from shopping or gardening
