ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Ron Jackson rushed for 211 yards and a Freedom Bowl-record four touchdowns on 46 carries to lead Tulsa to a 28-17 victory over San Diego State at Anaheim Stadium. Freshman All-American Marshall Faulk rushed for 157 yards on 30 carries, including a 2-yard touchdown run with 5:23 remaining in the first quarter to give the Aztecs an early 7-0 lead. After two Tulsa scores, SDSU QB David Lowery capped a 10-play, 65-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 14 at the half. The Hurricane defense limited the Aztecs to just 83 total yards and a 26-yard field goal by Andy Trakas in the second half, before Jacksons 4-yard TD run with 3:59 remaining sealed the victory for Tulsa.

SAN DIEGO -- Rob Houghtlin hit a field goal as time expired to lift Iowa to a 39-38 victory over San Diego State in the Holiday Bowl before the largest crowd (59,478) ever to watch an Aztec football game at that time. Rick Bayless led the Hawkeyes, who were down 28-13 with 7:52 left in the third quarter, with 110 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries. After two Iowa touchdowns in the fourth quarter, SDSUs Kevin Rahill nailed a 21-yard field goal to give the Aztecs a 3836 lead with only 47 seconds remaining. However, the Hawkeyes marched down to the Aztec 24-yard-line and Houghtlin made the game-winning kick for Iowa. Todd Santos completed 21-of-33 passes for 298 yards and three touchdowns to lead the SDSU offense. Corey Gilmore caught nine passes for 70 yards and ran for 35 more, including a 1-yard run in the third quarter.

LAS VEGAS -- Freshman quarterback Ronald Curry ran for a 48-yard touchdown in the first quarter and linebacker Keith Newman intercepted a Brian Russell pass at the goal line in the final minute as North Carolina held on for a 20-13 victory over San Diego State in the Las Vegas Bowl. After a 60-yard TD run by SDSUs Lonny Mitchell, UNC rattled off 20 straight points before Nate Tandberg's 32-yard field goal with 2:16 left in the first half brought the Aztecs to within 20-10. With 9:49 to play in the game, SDSU took control on their own 6-yard line and began a march that covered 75 yards in 13 plays, culminating with a 38-yard field goal by Tanberg with
