Connecting the extension / telescopic wand
^ With the square hole facing the carrying handle, insert the respective wand into the top of the vacuum cleaner body. Gently turn the tube until it locks in place. ^ To remove the wand, press down on the locking button (see inset) and pull slightly twisting the tube.

Connecting the handle

^ Line up the square hole and the locking button, insert the handle into the extension / telescopic wand. Gently turn the handle until it locks in place. ^ To detach the two parts, press and hold the release button (see arrow) while gently turning and pulling off the handle.
The handle can also be fitted directly to the vacuum cleaner housing. This allows for easier vacuuming of upholstered furniture, mattresses, etc.
The extension / telescopic wand can also be used as a suction wand to extend the reach of the vacuum cleaner, making it easier to clean under furniture.
Connecting the rug and floor tool
^ Insert the lower tube of the vacuum cleaner into the rug and floor tool and gently turn until it locks into place. ^ To remove the floor brush press and hold the release button (see arrow) while gently pulling the rug and floor tool off.

Winding up the power cord
When the vacuum cleaner is not in use the power cord can be wound around the two cord hooks. ^ To prevent the cord from unwinding, press the cord into the locking groove of the plug (see insert).

Included accessories

The vacuum cleaner includes the following accessories: a Accessory clip (depending on model) b Crevice nozzle c Upholstery nozzle

Accessory clip

(standard on some models) ^ If needed attach the accessory clip to the extension / telescopic wand, a. ^ Push the accessory clip over the cord hook ring, b, until it clicks. The accessory clip stores the supplied crevice nozzle and upholstery nozzle.

Crevice nozzle

For cleaning in folds, crevices and corners.

Upholstery nozzle

Unwinding the power cord

The lower cord hook rotates. ^ Turn the cord hook so that the lower portion of the cord hangs free. The cord can now be easily removed and unwound.
Adjusting the telescopic wand
(depending on model) One piece of the telescopic wand is stored inside the other and can be adjusted to suit your height for comfortable vacuum cleaning. ^ Press the telescopic wand release button (see arrow) to release the tubes and adjust to the required height.
Plugging the vacuum cleaner in
^ Plug the vacuum cleaner in. ^ To prevent the power cord from getting in the way or kinking while vacuuming, hang the cord over the hook on the handle (see insert). The power cord will be guided so that it does not hinder vacuuming.
Turning the vacuum cleaner on and off
There are two slide switches located on the handle to turn the vacuum cleaner on and off easily whether the vacuum cleaner is used upright or horizontally. Either of these slide switches can be used to operate the vacuum cleaner.
Double slide switch 0 = vacuum cleaner is off
min = minimum suction max = maximum suction ^ To turn the vacuum cleaner on, slide either switch to min or max. ^ To turn the vacuum cleaner off, pull the slide switch to 0. Select min for vacuuming light weight items such as throw rugs or curtains.

Adjusting the suction

(depending on model) Some models have an adjustable suction control that allows you to optimize the vacuum cleaners performance to meet different cleaning needs. The suction can be adjusted to the amount of dirt and the type of material that will be vacuumed. Lightly soiled or smooth flooring can be vacuumed at a middle setting. Carpets or heavy mats can be vacuumed at the highest setting in order to remove deep seated dirt. The highest setting should also be used if a Turbobrush is connected to the vacuum cleaner.
Adjusting the rug and floor tool to the floor type
The rug and floor tool has been designed to give excellent cleaning results on either carpeted or smooth floors. For vacuuming carpets and rugs: ^ Press the foot switch to the position. For vacuuming smooth floors: ^ Press the foot switch to the position.
Parking and storing the vacuum cleaner
There is a non-skid rubber bumper on the vacuum cleaner handle. This allows the vacuum cleaner to be leaned upright against a wall if desired. Before leaving the vacuum cleaner make sure it is turned off and leaning against a wall at a safe angle.
To protect the bristle rings on the rug and floor tool, we suggest hanging the vacuum cleaner on a wall hook by using the hole located on the bottom of the handle.

cleaner before performing any maintenance work.
The Miele filter system consists of the following three components. Dustbag Exhaust filter Dust compartment filter Each of these components must be changed periodically to maintain the vacuum cleaners efficiency. Only use Miele dustbags, filters and accessories with the "Original Miele" logo. Only then can the suction power of the vacuum cleaner reach its optimum potential creating the best possible cleaning results.
Which dustbags and filters are the right ones?
This vacuum cleaner uses Original Miele dustbags Type K/K and an Original Miele filters, the "Original Miele" Logo will appear on the packaging or directly on the dustbag.
paper or a similar material, or dustbags with a cardboard retaining plate can lead to serious damage to the vacuum cleaner and possibly voiding the warranty, just as with the use of dustbags without the "Original Miele" logo.

An "Air clean" exhaust filter and a dust compartment filter are supplied with every box of Miele dustbags. If you would like to purchase additional Miele filters separately, contact your vacuum dealer or Miele, please quote the model number of your Miele vacuum cleaner to ensure correct parts are ordered. These parts are also available to order from the online Miele store. The exhaust filter supplied with the vacuum cleaner can be exchanged with another type of Original Miele filter (see "Exchanging exhaust filters").

Maintenance and care

When to change the dustbag
Change the dustbag when the colored marker in the dustbag change indicator fills the display. Miele dust bags are disposable and made to be used only once. Do not attempt to reuse. Checking the dustbag change indicator ^ Attach the floor tool to the vacuum cleaner. Perform this test with the floor tool only, since other attachments can affect the function of the dustbag change indicator. ^ Turn the vacuum cleaner on and select the highest power setting. ^ Lift the floor brush slightly off the floor. If the marker completely fills the indicator window, the dust bag needs to be changed.
How the dustbag change indicator works The dustbag change indicator is designed to show when the bag is full of common household dust and measures the amount of air flow through the dustbag. Normal household dust is a mixture of dust, hair, carpet fluff, threads, sand, etc. However, if fine dust, such as drill dust, sand, plaster or flour is vacuumed, the pores of the dustbag may become blocked. The marker will indicate that the bag is "full" even when it is not. The dustbag should be changed as the suction power is greatly reduced. ^ If the bag is bulging with pet fur, hair, carpet fluff, etc. the indicator may not register "full". This is because the air flow of the dustbag may still be high enough not to activate the marker to show maximum. The dustbag should still be changed.
How to change the dustbag
^ Press the dust compartment release button, raise the lid until it clicks into place.
^ Grasp the collar by the two finger holes and pull it out from the dustbag holder. The dustbag has a flap which closes automatically to prevent dust from escaping when the dustbag is removed.
^ Insert the new dustbag as far as it will go into the dustbag holder. Do not unfold the dustbag when taking it out of the box. ^ Unfold the dustbag in the dust compartment. ^ Close the dust compartment lid until it clicks into place. Take care not to jam the dustbag in the lid.
,An empty-operation-barrier blocks the dust compartment lid from closing if no dustbag is inserted or if it is not inserted all the way. Do not force it closed.
Replacing the dust compartment filter (motor protection)
^ Press the dust compartment release button and open the compartment lid.
A dust compartment filter is included in every box of genuine Miele dustbags. ^ Open the filter frame, remove the old filter and replace with a new one. ^ Snap shut the filter frame and close the dust compartment lid firmly.

Replacing the "Air Clean" filter
^ Press the release button for the exhaust filter compartment on the rear of the vacuum cleaner and remove the lid.
^ Remove the filter at the clean space (see arrow) and replace it with a new one. If you would like to use an Active Air Clean or HEPA filter, see "Exchanging exhaust filters".
^ Place the locator pins on the bottom of the lid into their respective notches and close the lid.
Replacing the "Active Air Clean" filter or the "HEPA" filter
^ Press the release button for the exhaust filter compartment lid on the rear of the vacuum cleaner and remove the lid.
^ Remove the used filter and replace it with a new one. ^ Write the date of the next scheduled filter change on the label of the new filter. If you would like to use a Air Clean filter, see "Exchanging exhaust filters".
When to change the thread catcher
The thread catcher pads on the bottom of the rug and floor tool and the upholstery tool should be replaced as soon as they appear worn.
Changing the thread catcher
^ Use a knife or similar object to remove the thread catcher pads from the slots. Press the new thread catcher into the slots.
Servicing the floor roller ^ Use a coin to release the roller pin and pull it out. ^ Push and take out the roller axle. ^ Take out the roller. ^ Remove all threads, hair, etc. and reassemble the parts. New thread catcher pads can be purchased from any authorized Miele vacuum dealer or Miele.
Exchanging exhaust filters
Depending on your model the vacuum cleaner is fitted with one of the following exhaust filters. a Air Clean b Active Air Clean c HEPA All of the above filters are interchangeable. The filters have different features, see "Optional accessories". When changing the filter 1. If you would like to replace filter a with filter b or c it is essential that you remove the filter frame before inserting the new type of filter. 2. If you would like to replace filter b or c with filter a, a filter frame* must be installed at the rear of the exhaust filter compartment lid. * see "Optional accessories"
Removing or inserting the filter frame ^ Grasp the sides of the filter frame at the locations shown in the picture and squeeze. The frame can now be inserted or removed.
Cleaning and care ,Turn off the vacuum cleaner and unplug it from the outlet before performing any maintenance work.
Vacuum cleaner and accessories The vacuum cleaner and other plastic accessories can be cleaned with a damp cloth or a cleaner suitable for plastics.
,Do not use abrasive, glass or all purpose cleaners! They will damage the surface.

Dust compartment The dust compartment can, if necessary, be cleaned using a dry cloth, dusting brush or a second vacuum cleaner to remove any dust. Monitor the dustbag change indicator and inspect all filters regularly. Clean or replace them when necessary according to these Operating Instructions.
,Do not submerge the vacuum cleaner in water. If moisture gets into the appliance there is the risk of an electric shock.
Frequently asked questions
Overheating If the vacuum cleaner has overheated the temperature limiter will automatically turn the vacuum cleaner off. This can occur if, for instance, large articles block the suction tube or when the filter bag is full or contains particles of fine dust. A heavily soiled exhaust or dust compartment filter can also be the cause of overheating. In this case, please turn the vacuum cleaner off. Check for any blockages and allow the vacuum cleaner to cool down for 30 minutes.

Technical service

In the event of a fault which you cannot fix yourself please contact the Miele Service Department at the phone number listed on the back of this booklet. ^ Please quote the model type of your appliance. This can be found on the data plate on the bottom of the vacuum cleaner.

Optional accessories

Some models are equipped with one or more of the following accessories.

Power brush

The powerbrushes can only be connected to a vacuum cleaner having a powerbrush outlet. Observe the cleaning instructions of the floor manufacturer. Powerbrush SEB 217 (EB02) The Powerbrush is recommended for cleaning and restoring crushed pile on medium-nap carpeting. It is particularly suitable for cleaning and restoring crushed carpet pile of floor coverings subject to hard wear, especially in high traffic areas. Powerbrush SEB 236 (EB01) In comparison to the SEB 217 this powerbrush is 2 3/8" (60 mm) wider, more powerful and recommended for cleaning large areas. It is also equipped with : - a height adjustment - a headlight - a multifunction indicator. Powerbrush SEB 228 (EB03) The Powerbrush is particularly suitable for cleaning and restoring crushed carpet pile of wall to wall carpeting and floor coverings subject to hard wear, especially in high traffic areas. The Powerbrush can also be used on smooth floor surfaces.

Turbobrush - Turbo Comfort Observe the cleaning instructions of the floor manufacturer. The Turbobrush is recommended for cleaning short to medium pile carpeting. It is mechanically driven by the suction power of the vacuum cleaner. In addition to dust particles it also removes stubbornly adhered threads, hairs and carpet fluff.
Hand Turbobrush - Turbo Mini The Hand Turbobrush is intended for vacuuming upholstery, mattresses, car seats, carpeted stairs and other areas inaccessible with the standard Turbobrush.
Floor brush - Hardfloor To vacuum sturdy hard floors, e.g. tiles and stone floors.
Floor brush - Parquet (standard on some models) Special brush with natural bristles intended for cleaning parquet and laminate floors, especially those susceptible to scratching. The parquet floor brush can be cleaned with the vacuum cleaner using the crevice nozzle if necessary.
Floor brush - Parquet Twister with swiveling head For cleaning all hard flooring, e.g. parquet and tiles. Especially suitable for vacuuming niches and tight spaces. Floor brush - Parquet Twister XL with swiveling head Similar to the Parquet Twister except it is 3 9/16" (90 mm) wide, making it ideal for cleaning large spaces.
Canister vacuum cleaner accessories By attaching a hose to the extension tube of the vacuum cleaner, the upright vacuum can be used as a canister vacuum.
This allows easy cleaning of taller items such as bookshelves, furniture, blinds, etc. Vacuuming inside closets or under beds is also made easier. Important When buying canister accessories for your vacuum cleaner, be sure to have the model number accessible.
Dusting brush For cleaning moldings, ornate or carved articles, etc. The head of the dusting brush swivels and can be turned to attain the best cleaning position.
Universal brush For dusting books, shelves, etc.
Accessory clip (standard on some models) For storing the supplied crevice nozzle and upholstery brush.
Radiator brush For cleaning radiators, narrow shelves or crevices. Use only in connection with the crevice nozzle.
Mattress tool For cleaning deep crevices, mattresses and upholstery.

Active Air Clean filter (standard on some models) A special active charcoal filter which absorbs odors from dust in the dustbag, helping to prevent odors. The "Active Air Clean filter" can be inserted in place of the "Air Clean filter". There is no difference in the fine dust performance of the "Active Air Clean" and the "Air Clean" filter.
HEPA Filter (standard on some models) The "HEPA" filter combines activated charcoal and HEPA filtration in one. The active charcoal layer absorbs odors from the dust collected in the dustbag. Vacuum cleaners equipped with this exhaust filter are particularly suitable for allergy sufferers and those concerned with a high level of hygiene because of its ability to trap respirable particles and allergens. The "HEPA filter" can be inserted instead of the existing exhaust filter.
Filter frame The filter frame is needed if you would like to exchange a Air Clean filter with an Active Air Clean or HEPA filter, see "Exchanging exhaust filters".

Warning and Safety instructions ~ This appliance is not intended for
This vacuum cleaner meets statutory safety requirements. Improper use can, however, lead to personal injury and material damage. To avoid the risk of accidents and damage to the vacuum cleaner, read these instructions carefully before using it for the first time. They contain important notes on its safety, operation and maintenance. Keep these instructions in a safe place and ensure new users are familiar with the content. Pass them on to any future owner. use by persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience or knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning its use by a person responsible for their safety.

Keep the cable away from sharp edges and do not let it be squashed, for example, under a door. Avoid running the vacuum cleaner over the cable. This could damage the cable, plug or socket and pose a safety hazard. The appliance must not be used if any of these have suffered damage.
~ It is important to switch the vacuum
cleaner off before changing over accessories and floorheads, especially an Electro- or Turbobrush.
~ Do not let the vacuum cleaner get
wet. Clean only with a dry cloth or slightly damp cloth when disconnected from the mains supply. If moisture gets into the appliance, there is a risk of electric shock.

Correct use

~ Do not vacuum up items which are
heavy, hard or have sharp edges. They could cause a blockage and damage the appliance.
~ To avoid the risk of damage, do not
use the vacuum cleaner without the dustbag, dust compartment filter and exhaust filter in place. Otherwise it could get damaged.
~ Floor attachments, accessories and
tubes must not be used at head level to avoid the risk of injury, e.g. to eyes and ears.
~ If a dustbag is not inserted, the dust compartment cover does not normally close. Do not force it. ~ Do not vacuum up anything which
has been burning or is still glowing e.g. cigarettes, ashes or coal, whether glowing or apparently extinguished. The cleaner might catch fire.
~ Monitor the change dustbag
indicator and change the dustbag if necessary. Check the exhaust and dust compartment filters at the same time and change them too if necessary. A full bag or blocked filter will reduce the suction power of the cleaner. A temperature limiter switches the vacuum cleaner off automatically if it gets too hot. See "Problem solving guide".
~ Do not vacuum up any water, liquid or damp dirt. This will cause major faults and could seriously impair the functioning and electrical safety of the appliance. Wait until any freshly cleaned or shampooed carpets or floor coverings are completely dry before attempting to vacuum. ~ Do not vacuum toner dust. Toner,
such as that used in printers and photocopiers, can conduct electricity. The filter system in the vacuum cleaner may not filter it completely, causing the toner to be blown back into the room by the fan.

~ Important information on the
handling of batteries (for models with radio controls on the handle): Do not use rechargeable batteries. Do not short circuit or recharge batteries, or throw them into a fire. Danger of explosion. Disposing of batteries: Remove the batteries from the radio control handle and dispose of them in your recycling bin. Do not dispose of them with the normal household waste.

Accessories

Miele accessories including floorheads, filters and dustbags are available to order from your Miele retailer, the Miele Spare Parts Department or via the internet on www.miele-shop.com.
~ The Miele Electrobrush is a motor driven accessory for use only with Miele vacuum cleaners. The cleaner must not be used with an electrobrush produced by another manufacturer. ~ To avoid the risk of injury when vacuuming with a Miele Electrobrush or Turbobrush, do not touch the rotating roller brush. ~ It is not advisable to vacuum directly with the handle, i.e. without an accessory attached as the rim could get damaged and you could hurt yourself on sharp edges. ~ Miele vacuum cleaner bags are disposable and intended to be used only once. Do not attempt to re-use. Blocked pores reduce the efficiency of the cleaner. ~ To ensure safety only use genuine Miele dustbags, filters and accessories. This will ensure optimum performance of the appliance throughout its life.
The manufacturer cannot be held liable for damage caused by non-compliance with these Warning and Safety instructions.

This makes the cleaner easier to carry or store.

Maintenance and care

Warning: Always disconnect the vacuum cleaner from the electrical supply for maintenance work and for cleaning. Switch off at the wall socket and remove the plug. If using the ACCU NOVA powerbrush, switch this off as well. The Miele filter system consists of three filters which must be replaced from time to time to ensure that your cleaner performs efficiently. Dustbag Exhaust filter Dust compartment filter (for motor protection) Warning: To ensure that your vacuum cleaner functions correctly, cleans hygienically and gives you many years of trouble-free operation, please only use genuine Miele approved dustbags and filters. The use of non-Miele approved dustbags and accessories could invalidate your warranty and cause damage to your product.
Purchasing new dustbags and filters
Replacement dustbags and filters can be obtained from your local Miele retailer, the Miele Spare Parts Department (see back cover for contact details) or via the internet on www.miele-shop.com.
Ordering the correct dustbags and filters
When ordering dustbags for this vacuum cleaner, ask for bags with the code G/N.
A Super Air Clean exhaust filter and a dust compartment filter are supplied with every packet of Miele dustbags. If you wish to purchase exhaust filters or dust compartment filters separately, please quote the model number of your appliance when ordering to ensure you get the correct items. You can replace the exhaust filter fitted in the vacuum cleaner with one of the other Miele exhaust filters if you wish (see "Optional accessories").
When to change the dustbag
Change the dustbag when the colour marker in the dustbag change indicator fills the display, or sooner if it is no longer effective (see possible reasons for this below). Miele dustbags are disposable, and designed for single use only. Do not attempt to re-use them as suction would be reduced. Checking the dustbag change indicator ^ Attach the standard floorhead to the suction tube. Do not use any of the other floorheads or attachments as they will cause the dustbag change indicator to give a false reading. ^ Switch on the vacuum cleaner using the On/Off foot control s, and select the highest power setting. ^ Lift the floorhead off the floor a little. If the marker completely fills the dustbag change indicator, you should replace the dustbag with a new one.
How the dustbag change indicator works The dustbag change indicator is set for normal household dust. Normal household dust would contain a mixture of dust, hair, carpet fluff, threads, grit etc. However, if the vacuum cleaner has been used to suck up fine dust, such as plaster, brick dust, cement or flour, the pores of the dustbag will become blocked very quickly. This affects the air permeability of the bag, and the marker will indicate that the bag is "full" even when it is not. If this happens you must still change the dustbag because suction power will be greatly reduced by blocked pores in the dustbag. If, on the other hand, you have vacuumed up a large amount of hair and carpet fluff which typically contains a lot of air, the indicator may fail to react even though the bag is full. You should still change it! Both these extremes can occur.

Replacing the dustbag

^ Press the release button for the dust compartment lid and raise the lid as far as it will go.
^ To remove the dustbag, hold the bag by the collar and pull it out of its holder. The dustbag has a closing flap which closes automatically when the dustbag is removed to prevent any dust escaping.
^ Fit the new dustbag into the holder as far as it will go. Leave it folded up when you take it out of the box. ^ Close the dust compartment lid securely, making sure it clicks into position. Take care not to trap the dustbag when doing so. Warning: The lid will not close without a dustbag in place, or if the dustbag is incorrectly fitted. Do not force it.
When to change the exhaust filter
Depending on the model, your vacuum cleaner will be fitted as standard with one of the following exhaust filters: a a Super Air Clean filter Replace this filter every time you start a new packet of Miele dustbags. A Super Air Clean exhaust filter and a dust compartment filter are supplied with every packet of Miele dustbags. b an Active Air Clean filter (black) c an Active HEPA filter (blue) These types of filter need to be changed approx. once a year. Make a note of the date on the filter.
Exhaust filter change indicator
Certain models are fitted with an exhaust filter change indicator (reset control) to show when to change your Active Air Clean b or Active HEPA c filter. The indicator lights up after approx. 50 hours of operation, which is equivalent to about a year of average use. You can continue vacuuming when the light comes on. However, the suction power will be reduced as will the effectiveness of the filter if it is not replaced in good time. The filter change indicator light is irrelevant if a Super Air Clean filter (a) is being used, as long as it is replaced every time a new packet of Miele dustbags is started. The indicator light will go out when the reset button is pressed.
Replacing the Super Air Clean filter
Do not use more than one exhaust filter at a time. ^ Open the dust compartment lid. ^ Release the filter grille and raise it upwards. Grasp the used Super Air Clean filter by the clean, unsoiled section (see arrow) and take it out.
^ Replace it with a new Super Air Clean filter. If you wish to replace the Super Air Clean filter with an Active Air Clean filter or with an Active HEPA filter see "Replacing one type of filter with another". ^ Close the filter grille. ^ Close the dust compartment lid firmly. It should click into place.

Replacing an Active Air Clean filter or an Active HEPA filter
Do not use more than one exhaust filter at a time. ^ Open the dust compartment lid. ^ Raise the filter and remove it.
^ Replace with a new filter, and push it down into place. If you wish to replace the Active Air Clean filter or the Active HEPA filter with a Super Air Clean filter see "Replacing one type of filter with another". ^ Close the dust compartment lid firmly. It should click into place. Re-setting the exhaust filter change indicator If your vacuum cleaner is fitted with an exhaust filter change indicator, this needs to be re-set each time the filter is replaced. To do this the vacuum cleaner must be switched on. ^ Press the reset button. The exhaust filter change indicator goes out, and resets to zero. The filter change indicator can only be reset by pressing the reset button after the light has come on. Pressing the button at any other time will have no effect.
Replacing one type of filter with another
Depending on the model, your vacuum cleaner will be fitted as standard with one of the following exhaust filters: a a Super Air Clean filter, b an Active Air Clean filter (black), c an Active HEPA filter (blue). Please note 1. If you wish to replace the Super Air Clean filter a with an Active Air Clean filter b or an Active HEPA filter c, it is essential that you remove the filter grille before fitting the new type of filter. 2. If you wish to replace the Active Air Clean filter b or the Active HEPA filter c with a Super Air Clean filter a, then it is essential that you also fit a filter grille*. * Filter grille - see "Optional accessories". Do not use more than one exhaust filter at a time.
The exhaust filter indicator light (with reset button) that is fitted on certain models is designed to come on when the Active Air Clean or Active HEPA filter needs to be changed. The filter change indicator light is irrelevant if a Super Air Clean filter is being used, as long as it is replaced every time a new packet of Miele dustbags is started. The indicator light will go out when the reset button is pressed.
When to change the dust compartment filter (for motor protection)
Replace this filter every time you start a new packet of dustbags. A dust compartment filter is supplied with every packet of Miele dustbags.

How to change the dust compartment filter
^ Open the dust compartment lid. ^ Unclip the filter frame and remove the old filter. Hold it by the clean unsoiled section to remove it. ^ Replace with a new dust compartment filter. ^ Close the filter frame.
When to change the battery in the radio-operated handle
Approx. every 18 months. One 3 V battery (CR 2032) is required. The vacuum cleaner can still be used when the battery has run out or if there is no battery fitted. ^ Switch the vacuum cleaner on using the On/Off foot control. The vacuum cleaner is ready to use (in stand-by mode). ^ Press the re-set button for the exhaust filter change indicator. The vacuum cleaner can continue to be used, but only at maximum power.
How to change the battery in the radio-operated handle
^ Open the cover to the battery compartment using a screwdriver. ^ Replace with a new battery, taking care to fit it the right way round. ^ Replace the cover. ^ Dispose of the old battery responsibly.
When to change the thread lifters
The thread lifters on the suction inlet to the floorhead and the upholstery nozzle can be replaced. Check them from time to time and replace them if the pile has worn down.
To replace the thread lifters
^ Use a knife or similar object to remove them from the slots. ^ Fit new thread lifters.
If threads or hair have wound round the bearing on the floorhead roller a Release the bearing (with bayonet fitting) using a coin. b Press the bearing out, and remove. c Take out the roller. Remove any threads and hair, replace the roller and refit the bearing.

Cleaning and care

E-Cloth Warning: Always disconnect the vacuum cleaner from the electricity supply for maintenance work and for cleaning. Switch off at the wall socket and remove the plug. If using the ACCU NOVA powerbrush, switch this off as well. Vacuum cleaner and accessories External surfaces of the vacuum cleaner and of the accessories can be cleaned with a dry or a slightly damp cloth, or with a proprietary cleaner suitable for plastic. Warning: Do not use abrasive cleaners, glass cleaners or all-purpose cleaners. Because of their chemical composition they could cause serious damage to plastic components. Dust compartment The dust compartment can, if necessary, be cleaned using a dry duster, brush or, if available, a second vacuum cleaner to vacuum the dust out. Warning: Do not let the vacuum cleaner get wet. If moisture gets into the appliance, there is a risk of electric shock. A microfibre "E-Cloth" is available from the Miele UK Spare Parts Department, which is suitable for cleaning surfaces such as stainless steel, glass, plastic and chrome without the use of chemicals. It can be washed 300 times.

Problem solving guide / After sales service
The vacuum cleaner switches off automatically. On certain models, the overheating warning light also comes on. A temperature limiter switches the vacuum cleaner off automatically if it gets too hot. Some models also have a warning light , which comes on to indicate that it has overheated. This can occur if, for instance, large articles block the suction tube or when the filter bag is full or contains particles of fine dust. A heavily soiled exhaust or dust compartment filter can also be the cause of overheating. Switch the vacuum cleaner off immediately using the On/Off foot control s. Disconnect from the electricity supply. Switch off at the wall socket and remove the plug. After removing the cause, wait for approx. 20 - 30 minutes to allow the vacuum cleaner to cool down. It can then be switched on again. After sales service In the event of a fault that you cannot easily remedy, please contact your Miele dealer, or the nearest Miele Service Department (see address on back page). Please note that telephone calls may be monitored and recorded for training purposes.

Optional accessories

Miele accessories including floorheads, filters and dustbags are available to order from your local Miele retailer, the Miele Spare Parts Department or via the internet on www.miele-shop.com. Certain models are supplied as standard with one or more of the following accessories: Important: please observe the flooring manufacturer's cleaning and care instructions.

Electrobrushes

Electrobrushes can only be used on models fitted with an Electrobrush socket. If there is no Electrobrush socket, an ACCU NOVA rechargeable powerbrush can be used instead.
Electrobrush SEB 216-3 The Electrobrush is particularly suitable for intensive vacuuming of carpets which are subject to hard wear. It is very effective at removing deep seated dirt and preventing areas of frequent use being trodden into a path.
Electrobrush SEB 234 L The Electrobrush SEB 234 L is 60 mm wider than the SEB 216-3, and is more powerful, making it ideal for cleaning larger floor areas. It has the following additional features compared to the SEB 216-3: Adjustable height settings A headlamp to light up the area being vacuumed A multi-function indicator lamp ACCU NOVA rechargeable powerbrush Unlike the SEB 216-3 and the SEB 234 L, this Electrobrush is battery operated, and can therefore be used on models which do not have an Electrobrush socket.
Turbobrush The Turbobrush is particularly suitable for vacuuming cut-pile carpeting, and is operated by the suction power of the vacuum cleaner. It has a rotating brush and is very effective at picking up thread, hairs and fluff.
Hand-held Turbobrush The hand-held Turbobrush is intended for vacuuming upholstery, mattresses, car seats, carpeted stairs and other areas inaccessible to the standard Turbobrush.
ALLERGOTEC floorhead The level of cleanliness of the floor shows in a colour "traffic light" display when vacuuming. The ALLERGOTEC floorhead is designed specially for the daily hygienic cleaning of all floor surfaces.

SBB 235-3 Hard floor brush This brush is designed for use on hard flooring such as tiled or stone floors.
Parquet floor brush This brush has natural bristles and is designed for use on parquet floors and other surfaces which are susceptible to scratching such as laminate flooring. The parquet floor brush can be cleaned with the vacuum cleaner using the crevice nozzle if necessary.
SBB 300-3 floorbrush This brush is suitable for use on all types of hard flooring and is particularly good at accessing awkward corners and niches.
Universal brush For dusting books, shelves, etc.
Radiator brush (Can only be used if attached to the crevice nozzle). For cleaning radiators, narrow shelves and crevices.
Mattress nozzle For cleaning upholstery, mattresses, cushions, curtains, covers etc.
Crevice nozzle (300 mm) For cleaning in folds, crevices or corners.
Hygiene seal with active charcoal This prevents dust and odours from escaping when the suction hose is removed for transportation or storage. It can be secured to the suction hose during vacuuming.
Hose adapter For extending the suction hose by approx. 1.5 m. The adapter is fitted between the handle and the suction hose.
Micro Set This set is specially designed for cleaning small objects and difficult to reach areas (such as PC keyboards, stereo equipment, intricately carved furniture and ornaments, models etc). It consists of: Micro-hose with combination nozzle (crevice nozzle and dusting brush) Micro dusting brush Micro crevice nozzle Angled extension CarClean Set Plus The CarClean Set Plus has been designed as an accessory for Miele cylinder vacuum cleaners for valeting the interior of cars. It consists of: Hand-held Turbobrush Micro-hose with combination nozzle (crevice nozzle and dusting brush) Crevice nozzle (300 mm) These are supplied in a carry case together with a 3 m long suction hose with hose clip.
Active Air Clean filter A special active charcoal filter, which removes odours coming from the dirt in the dustbag, keeping unpleasant lingering smells to a minimum. There is no difference in the filtration levels between the Active Air Clean filter and the Super Air Clean filter. Active HEPA filter A combination filter which complies with the requirements of EN 1822 HEPA classification 12. It is able to filter out very fine particles and micro-organisms. The active charcoal layer absorbs odours from the dust collected in the dustbag. This filter is specially appropriate for allergy sufferers and users requiring exceptional standards of hygiene. The Active HEPA filter replaces the filter fitted in the vacuum cleaner. Do not use aroma capsules in your cleaner if you use either of these filters. The charcoal in them will absorb their aroma, rendering them ineffective. Filter grille The filter grille is required if you wish to fit a Super Air Clean filter instead of an Active Air Clean filter or an Active HEPA filter (see "Maintenance and care Replacing one type of filter with another").

Electrical connection for the UK
All electrical work should be carried out by a suitably qualified and competent person in strict accordance with current national and local safety regulations (BS 7671 in the UK). The voltage and connected load are given on the data plate located underneath the vacuum cleaner. Please ensure that these match the household mains supply. The fuse rating is quoted on the plug. The appliance is supplied with a cable and moulded plug ready for connection to a 230-240 V/50 Hz a.c. single phase supply. Non-rewireable plugs BS 1363 The fuse cover must be re-fitted when changing the fuse, and if the fuse cover is lost the plug must not be used until a suitable replacement is obtained. The colour of the correct replacement cover is that of the coloured insert in the base of the plug, or the colour that is embossed in words on the base of the plug, (as applicable to the design of plug fitted). Replacement fuses should be ASTA approved to BS1362 and have the correct rating. Replacement fuses and fuse covers may be purchased from your local electrical supplier.
