SFMC CAMPUS ENHANCEMENTS UNDERWAY
Over the last few months, St. Francis Medical Center (SFMC) has been working with the LA County Department of Health Services and Emergency Medical Services to develop a plan that will enable SFMC to accommodate additional trauma volume necessitated by the closure of the King/Drew Trauma Center. Last month, the plan was approved by the LA County Board of Supervisors, and the new agreement will help ensure SFMCs ability to accommodate approximately 300 additional trauma patients per year, while maintaining essential healthcare services. The plan includes funds that will augment SFMCs strategic initiatives and allow SFMC to complete a number of campus enhancements to better ensure the safety and comfort of patients and their families. These include various facility improvements, additional safety officers and customer service representatives, advanced closed circuit monitoring technology, and improved signage. SFMC is ready for the increased trauma volume, stated Gerald T. Kozai, President & CEO of SFMC. With this public/private collaboration, SFMC can continue to provide excellent healthcare Services while responding to the changing needs of the community.
Physician Leader
SFMC Physician Harding Young, M.D. and Mary Yamachika, R.N. along with members of the SFMC family appreciate your support.

Highly regarded in the medical community and well versed in healthcare access issues, Dr. Higgins has served on SFMCs medical staff since 1980 and as Medical Director of Emergency Services from 19842003. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board, Frontline Emergency Care Specialists. Los Angeles is at the epicenter of a growing crisis in healthcare. During my year as President, LACMA will play an increasingly active role in trying to resolve issues in this crisis, Higgins said.

A NEW LOOK
HUNTINGTON PARK CLINIC
Patient care and comfort is a high priority at SFMC as well as at its six satellite clinics in the Southeast Los Angeles area. As a result, the Huntington Park Family Health Center recently received a makeover. The clinic includes redesigned offices, exam rooms and waiting areas to
accommodate its established maternal and child healthcare service and family practice medicine, as well as its Childrens Counseling Center. In addition, an adjoining suite has been created for three new internal medicine physicians who will serve the communitys senior population. An exterior facelift accents the renovations, making the clinic more welcoming and comfortable for patients. Additional SFMC community clinics include centers in Compton, Cudahy, Downey, South Gate and Lynwood. For more information or an appointment, call 800-603-9355.
UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY VISITS SFMC
The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency has identified St. Francis Medical Center as a key component in the nations health care system and a critical infrastructure. As a result, the US Department of Homeland Security (USDHS) conducted a comprehensive Site Assessment Visit on March 3rd. This visit was one in a series of visits across the country to identify and reduce vulnerabilities of the U.S. to terrorist attacks and to minimize damage, should such an attack occur. The visit went extremely well! In fact, the lead USDHS agent commented that the SFMC visit was his most successful to date.
STATE UPDATE
The State Senate and Assembly Budget Subcommittees on Health conducted hearings regarding the MediCal Program Redesign and the 1155 Waiver Proposal. SFMC provided testimony to the Senate. We reiterated the need for these proposals to: Maximize federal funding to ensure adequate funding levels Provide stable funding for safety net providers Ensure that future growth is addressed in the funding proposals.
NEW CENTER FOR WOUND MANAGEMENT
Within the SFMC primary service area, it is estimated that over 20,000 people suffer from a chronic, non-healing wound, resulting from diabetic neuropathy, venous stasis disease, peripheral vascular disease, pressure and other conditions. With SFMCs new Wound Care program, specially trained physicians will be able to heal between 80-90% of all patients who complete treatment, and most importantly - save limbs and save lives. In addition, the program can significantly reduce healthcare costs. The center will utilize Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), which involves placing a patient in a pressurized chamber and administering 100% oxygen at pressure greater than sea level. SFMC looks forward to bringing this exciting service to the community, which will improve the quality of life for many suffering from chronic wounds. The Center is scheduled to open in early summer.

Dietary associate, Antonio Bennett, is giving new meaning to hospital food at St. Francis Medical Center.
20/40 Career Advancement Program
Chef-in-training Antonio Bennett not only creates culinary masterpieces in the kitchen, but also delivers top notch grades in the classroom. Bennett is a leadcook at SFMC and student at the California School of Culinary Arts in Pasadena. He is one of seven individuals in the SFMC 20/40 Program. This unique career-advancement program is available to full-time employees and made possible through a grant from the Daughters of Charity Foundation. It is designed to assist associates in attaining personal and professional growth. The 20/40 Program allows participants to work 20 hours per week, spend 20 hours per week on higher education or training, and still receive full-time pay. This is a great opportunity, Bennett said. Its a prefect chance for me to go to school and further my education and still provide for my family. I love it. With the hospitals support, Antonio will soon be known as Chef Bennett throughout campus and as a result of his work, the term hospital food will have new meaning at SFMC.

THANK YOU, SFMC TRAUMA SERVICES
It was the final day of her trip here. Joyce McKeough was visiting her son Stewart in Los Angeles and enjoying a day of sightseeing, when the two of them were rear ended by a transport truck on northbound I-5. Joyce and Stewart were rushed by paramedics to St. Francis Medical Centers Trauma Center. From the moment the ambulance arrived at St. Francis Trauma Center until we were discharged that evening, we were given excellent care through every stage, relates Joyce. I remember and appreciate the gentle questioning and diagnosis of Dr. Edward Sims. And I remember the nurse, Syl, who was very good to my son and to me. The nurses were eternally kind to everyone, and the care we received was excellent. In a letter to the hospital Joyce described her experience in the Trauma Center as calming and constantly reassuring. As I looked about and assessed the people and all that was going on around me, it was a lovely feeling, Joyce wrote. St. Francis Medical Center definitely has values and heart. Joyce and Stewart are fine, and as a result of his experience at SFMC, Stewart has become a hospital volunteer after realizing how much a gentle, caring touch means.
From left: Dr. Edward Sims and Syl Cariaso, RN are two members of SFMCs trauma team who cared for the McKeough family during their stay at St. Francis.
