Debunking the Myths and Educating Consumers

merican consumers are quickly embracing digital television (DTV). This is good news for all retailers, manufacturers, broadcasters and most of all consumers! The marketplace success of DTV justifies our enthusiasm. Since the first U.S. sale of DTV in 1998, more than 20 million DTV products have been sold, making digital television one of the fastest selling products in the history of consumer electronics, CEA forecasts that THIS is the year consumers will buy more digital sets than analog. Consumers also are embracing the best of DTV high definition television (HDTV) with sales of HDTV constituting a full 86 percent of total DTV sales. To that end, we are particularly excited to see a continuing increase in the amount of HD programming available to viewers. I can hardly wait for the new fall HD programming. We are truly on our way to becoming a high-definition nation. Even as we celebrate how far weve come on the road to DTV, many consumers have questions. As a trade association, we are doing our utmost to get the word out about HDTV and clear up the consumer confusion concerning the transition to digital television, which will boost sales throughout the year. CEAs wealth of voluntary education and promotional initiatives includes websites, printed collateral and regional meetings. CEA operates four websites that promote the DTV transition through consumer and dealer education. The websites include www.ce.org/hdtv, www.antennaweb.org, www.CEknowhow.org and www.connectionsguide.org. For many consumers, most of their information about a purchase comes at the point-of-sale. CEAs CEknowhow retail training program (www.CEknowhow.com) equips retailers with up-to-date product category training for sales associates. More than 24,000 sales people completed training in 2004. When
consumers have questions retailers have answers. The website is customizable, allowing retailers to license and tailor the program to suit their particular needs. Dont forget to check it for frequent updates and additions. CEAs AntennaWeb (www.AntennaWeb. org), an antenna mapping program, helps retailers and consumers choose an off-air antenna best for their location. Maps are broken into color zones that represent where different types of antennas will work most effectively. Color zones on the maps correspond to a color-code logo that manufacturers place on their antenna products. The process could not be easier!
American consumers are quickly embracing digital television.
The Connections Guide (www.CEAconnectionsguide.org) is an interactive resource designed to help consumers better understand how to connect their audio and video products. With easyto-understand descriptions and photographs of each connector, the Connections Guide shows the consumers where the connectors are located and how they can use them to optimize product performance. CEA recently distributed more than one million copies of our Retailer Tip Sheet to stores across the country. This buck slip designed to fit in the salesmans pocket for quick and easy reference when explaining DTV to consumers on the sales floor. A reprint of the tip sheet is on page 4. Another piece of collateral designed to ease consumer confusion, created in conjunction with STARZ HD, is the Buyers Guide. The Buyers Guide details in three simple steps the process from buying to watching HDTV. I hope you check out these and other HDTV resources available from CEA. Download and print these publications directly from the CEA website to distribute to your customers. Visit www. ce.org/hdtv for more information. CEA has been a part of this transition since the earliest day when HD was just a vision of the future. We look forward to continuing to take the necessary steps to ensure a rapid, consumerfriendly end to the DTV transition. he Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) and the Consumer Electronics Retailers Coalition (CERC) have made a new tip sheet available for digital television (DTV) retailers to reproduce and distribute to consumers on the sales floor. The file may be downloaded online at www.dtv.gov. While youre there, check out the other useful information the FCC is making available to consumers interested in learning more about the analog to digital transition.
