of the car HiFi system which has been adjusted too high. With the motor switched off, the car HiFi system should not be in operation at high volume for a longer period of time. The car battery will quickly be discharged, and then it may not be capable any more of supplying sufficient energy for starting the car.
Connection of the Power Amplifier
Applications
The connection of the car HiFi power amplifier to the electric system of the car must only be carried out by authorized personnel. To prevent damage in case of a possible short circuit during installation, prior to the connection it is indispensable to screw off the negative terminal of the car battery. Lay the necessary cables so that their insulation cannot be damaged. The complete connection is shown in figs. on page 3.
The power amplifier WANTED-4/320 is especially designed for car HiFi sysems and can drive four full range speakers. Due to the integrated crossover networks it is also possible to realize an active 2-way system with two mid-high range speakers and two [kick] bass speakers or a subwoofer (biamping). To obtain a greater output power, the channels 1, 2 and/or 3,4 can drive one speaker each in bridge operation.
6.1 Power supply
6.1.1 Operating voltage Connect the terminal +12V (15) via a corresponding cable to the positive terminal of the car battery. To keep the voltage loss by the cable as low as possible, a cross section of 10 mm2 should be used as a minimum, e. g. CPC-100/RT*. To protect the newly laid 12 V cable against a short circuit, insert a 60 A additional fuse very close to the battery (max. cable length to the battery 20 cm). To stabilize the operating voltage for the power amplifier and the resulting power increase as well as sound improvement, a power capacitor is recommended (e. g. CAP-*). 6.1.2 Ground connection Connect the ground terminal GND (13) via a cable with a minimum cross section of 10 mm2 (e. g. CPC100/SW*) to the ground of the car or better directly to the negative terminal of the car battery. Notes: 1. When using the chassis as a ground connection, the place used must have a good electrical contact to the main chassis (e. g. by a sufficient number of welding points). Any lacquer at the point of contact must completely be removed.

Mounting
Caution in Case of High Volumes
Never adjust the volume very high. Extremely high volumes may damage your hearing. The human ear gets accustomed to high volumes which do not seem to be so high any more after some time. Therefore, do not increase a high volume which has once been adjusted after getting used to it. While driving in the car, signal sounds, e. g. by an ambulance, must not be drowned by the volume

2. To avoid ground loops, the ground of the car radio must be applied at the place where also the power amplifier is grounded. 6.1.3 Control voltage for switching-on The car HiFi power amplifier is switched on and off by a control voltage of +12 V at the terminal REM (14). Connect the terminal REM to the 12 V control output of the car radio (connection for a motor antenna, if necessary, to be connected in parallel to the motor antenna).
6.2 Line inputs
The power amplifier is connected via cables with phono connectors to the line outputs at the car radio. However, if no line outputs are provided at the car radio, the speaker outputs of the car radio can be connected via a corresponding transformer (e. g. FGA-20*) to the line inputs of the power amplifier. The exact connection depends on the desired operating mode of the power amplifier: 6.2.1 4-channel operation (fig. 3) Connect the outputs of the car radio to the inputs LINE IN (12) of the following channels: front left to channel 1 front right to channel 2 rear left to channel 3 rear right to channel 4 If no outputs for the rear channels are provided at the car radio, connect the output of the left channel via a Y cable (e. g. CBA-25/SW*) to the inputs of channels 1 and 3 and the output of the right channel via another Y cable to channels 2 and 4. 6.2.2. Bridge operation (fig. 4) Connect the output of the left channel at the car radio via a Y cable (e. g. CBA-25/SW*) to the inputs LINE IN (12) of channels 1 and 2 and the output of the right channel via another Y cable to channels 3 and 4.
6.2.3 Active 2-way system (bi-amping), fig. 6 To build up an active 2-way system, connect the output of the left channel at the car radio to the input LINE IN (12) of channel 1 and the output of the right channel to the input of channel 2. Do not press the button MODE (5) of channels 3 and 4 and press the button MODE (8) of channels 1 and 2. Thus, the input signal of channels 1 and 2 is also switched to channels 3 and 4 so that no additional external connections have to be made. When realizing an active kick bass, however, press the two buttons MODE. In this case connect the jacks LINE OUT (11) and the input jacks of channels 3 and 4 via a short cable with phono connectors, and set the sliding switch MODE (10) to the right stop to position LOW.
6.4 Speakers
Important! All speakers must be connected with two poles, i. e. without common ground connection. When choosing suitable speakers, pay in any case attention to their mechanical and electrical capability in connection with the amplifier power applied (also see specifications of the amplifier page 8). The exact connection of the speakers depends on the desired operation mode of the power amplifier: 6.4.1 4-channel operation The greatest output power is reached when connecting 2 speakers or a speaker group with a total impedance of 2 per channel (e. g. two 4 speakers connected in parallel). However, it is also possible to connect individual 4 speakers, in which case the output power is reduced. Connect the speakers to the terminals SPEAKER (17) also see fig. 3: CH 1+2 L+ = positive pole CH 1+2 L- = negative pole CH 1+2 R+ = positive pole CH 1+2 R- = negative pole CH 3+4 L+ = positive pole CH 3+4 L- = negative pole CH 3+4 R+ = positive pole CH 3+4 R- = negative pole speaker left front speaker left front speaker right front speaker right front speaker left rear speaker left rear speaker right rear speaker right rear
6.3 Line outputs
If another amplifier is required for the car HiFi system, its inputs can be connected to the output jacks LINE OUT (11). Select the required output signal with the sliding switch MODE (10): 3/4 the input signal of channels 3 and 4 is present, however, filtered through the high passes adjusted with the control HP (6) [independent of the position of switch MODE (5)] 1/2 the input signal of channels 1 and 2 is present, however, filtered through the high passes adjusted with the control HP (9) [independent of the position of switch MODE (8)] LOW the input signal of channels 1/3 (L) and 2/4 (R) is present, however, filtered through the low passes adjusted with the control LP (3) [independent of the position of switches MODE (5 and 8)] The first amplifier can e. g. drive the mid-high range speakers for four channels and supplies the bass frequencies to its line outputs (sliding switch MODE to LOW) for the further amplifier which drives the bass speakers or a subwoofer.
6.4.2 Bridge operation In bridge operation the impedance of the connected speakers or the total impedance of a speaker group per bridged channel pair must not be lower than 4 ! Connect the speakers to the terminals SPEAKER (17) and pay attention to the lettering BRIDGE also see fig. 4: CH 1+2 L+ = positive pole left speaker CH 1+2 L- = remains unconnected CH 1+2 R+ = remains unconnected CH 1+2 R- = negative pole left speaker

Inbetriebnahme
CH 3+4 L+ = positive pole right speaker CH 3+4 L- = remains unconnected CH 3+4 R+ = remains unconnected CH 3+4 R- = negative pole right speaker Different from this example in fig. 4 it is also possible that only the channels 3 and 4 operate in bridge operation and drive a subwoofer, see fig. 5. 6.4.3 Active 2-way system (bi-amping) For bi-amping the mid-high range speakers and the [kick] bass speakers or the subwoofer are separately connected to the power amplifier. The highest output power is reached when connecting 2 speakers or a speaker group with a total impedance of 2 per channel (e. g. two 4 speakers connected in parallel). However, it is also possible to connect individual 4 speakers, in which case the output power is reduced. Connect the speakers to the terminals SPEAKER (17) also see fig. 6: CH 1+2 L+ = positive pole left mid-high range speaker CH 1+2 L- = negative pole left mid-high range speaker CH 1+2 R+ = positive pole right mid-high range speaker CH 1+2 R- = negative pole right mid-high range speaker CH 3+4 L+ = positive pole left bass speaker CH 3+4 L- = negative pole left bass speaker CH 3+4 R+ = positive pole right bass speaker CH 3+4 R- = negative pole right bass speaker
6.4.4 Tri-mode In the tri-mode one subwoofer in bridge connection and two mid-high range speakers can be driven per channel pair. For this purpose a suitable tri-mode crossover network is required, and the impedance of the subwoofer must not be lower than 4 ! Connect the speakers via a suitable network to the terminals SPEAKER (17). Fig. 7 shows the connection for channels 3 and 4:
7.1 Switching on the filters and adjusting the crossover frequencies
According to speaker type used, press the switches MODE (5 and 8) for channels 1, 2 and 3, 4 separately or do not keep them pressed. Adjust the crossover frequencies with the trimming controls HP (6 and 9) and LP (3). For full range speakers press the switch MODE and turn the control HP to the left stop to position FLAT. Thus, the corresponding channels reproduce the entire frequency range. To protect the speakers against very low frequencies, with the control HP adjust the frequency at which the reproduction range of the speakers starts. For mid-high range speakers press the switch MODE. The high pass is switched on, and the low frequencies are suppressed in the corresponding channels. First coarsely adjust the crossover frequency with the control HP*. For bass speakers or a subwoofer do not press the switch MODE (however, press it in case of kick bass speakers see the next paragraph). The low pass is switched on, and the medium as well as high frequencies are suppressed in the corresponding channels. First coarsely adjust the crossover frequency with the control LP*. For kick bass speakers press the switch MODE. Due to the connection described in the second paragraph of chapter 6.2.3 a band pass is formed of the high pass and the low pass. First coarsely adjust the lower limit frequency with the control HP and the higher limit frequency with the control LP* (also see frequency diagram kick bass range in fig. 6).

7.2 Level matching
Note To keep the interfering radiation by the electric system of the car as low as possible, the output level of the signal source should be 1.5 V as a minimum. 1) Turn the controls GAIN (4 and 7) to the left stop to position 8 V. 2) Switch on the car HiFi system completely. For approx. 3 seconds the power amplifier is muted (switch-on delay). Then the green LED POWER (2) and the lettering CARPOWER in the window on the upper side of the unit light up. 3) Adjust the signal source, e. g. the car radio, to the maximum, non-distorting volume. 4) Turn up the controls LEVEL (4 and 7) so that just no distortions occur. In case of 4-channel operation it is possible to adjust also the balance between the front and the rear speakers with the controls if no control is provided for this purpose at the car radio. For the active 2-way operation (bi-amping) adjust a natural sound with the controls: If the volume of the bass frequencies is too low, reduce the levels of the channels for the mid-high range speakers. If the level of the bass frequencies is too high, reduce the volumes of the bass channels or of the subwoofer channel. 5) If further power amplifiers are used in the car HiFi system, reduce the levels of the channels which are too high to match the volumes of all channels with each other.
fuses with the values as indicated. Do not insert a fuse of a higher value under any circumstances. The power amplifier may be damaged, and the guarantee expires. 2) Check the 12 V power supply cable as well as the ground cable for interruption and for correct connection. 3) Check at the terminal REM (14) of the power amplifier if +12 V is present. If not, remove the cable at the terminal REM and for a short time short-circuit the terminals REM and +12V (15). If the power amplifier switches on now, the fault is due to the missing control voltage. Check the 12 V control output of the car radio and the corresponding connection cable to the power amplifier. Green LED POWER lights up 1) Check the cables with phono connectors from the signal source to the car HiFi power amplifier. Are the plugs correctly connected? Are the cables interrupted? 2) Check the signal source. Is the signal source switched on? Have the correct outputs been used? Is the signal source defective? 3) Check the speaker cables for interruption. 4) Check the connected speakers. Red LED PROTECT lights up The power amplifier is protected with a protective circuit against short-circuit at the speaker outputs and against overheating. If the protective circuit responds, the red LED PROTECT (1) lights up. In case of overheating the power amplifier switches on again automatically after cooling-off. In case of short circuit at the speaker outputs, after eliminating the error, the 12 V control voltage must shortly be switched off (e. g. switch off the car radio) to reset the protective circuit.
