Motorola Ships Two InternetReady Integrated Digital Wireless Handsets
iDEN Handsets Combine Microbrowser and Wireless Modem Functionality
Motorola has launched two Internet-ready handsets since February, when the company announced the i1000plus, the first palm-size iDEN handset to support wireless access to the Internet, corporate intranets and networks and enhanced phone features at CTIA Wireless 99 in New Orleans. In August, Motorola also introduced the affordable i500plus multi-service digital wireless handset. Both handsets, designed for users who rely on voice communication and convenient access to information over networks, are the first Internet-ready wireless devices to integrate the capabilities of a digital cell phone, two-way radio and alphanumeric pager with Internet microbrowser, two-way e-mail and fax capabilities using Motorolas advanced iDEN integrated digital communication technology. A first in the industry, the IP (Internet Protocol)-addressable i1000plus and i500plus handsets can also serve as a wireless modem when connected to a notebook computer or personal digital assistant. Both handsets offer truly distinguishing advantages over other Internet phones. Users can take advantage of the benefits of unprecedented communications capabilities. Packet data technology allows users to maintain a constant, virtual connection to the Internet, without having to establish a dial up connection and incur more airtime charges. Using the i1000plus and i500plus handsets, users can leverage the power of the Internet and access information from anywhere at anytime. i1000plus Features Turbo Dial one-button telephone dialing

Global Perspective

Customers Across the World Use iDEN Capabilities Uniquely
iDEN customers across the globe are using the integrated technology in a number of interesting ways. Here are some of the applications. Durham Regional Police Services, Oshawa, Ontario, CANADA Durham Regional Police Services (DRPS) signed a 15-year agreement with Clearnet to fulfill all DRPS mobile voice and data communications requirements. The project includes the installation of more than 200 digital mobile radios and 150 mobile data workstations in police vehicles, and the provision of 250 digital portable radios for use by front-line police personnel. This public safety solution is based on Motorolas iDEN network. The DRPS public safety network represents a turnkey digital wireless communications solution for both voice and high speed packet data, featuring: Ruggedized Motorola 470 series mobile, portable, and control station units Customized network design, functionality and coverage specific to DRPS and public safety requirements Advanced network features providing extensive coverage, reliability and priority communications for officer and community safety Portable grade two-way radio coverage within the Durham Region Wide-area two-way radio, messaging and digital telephone service within Ontario and Quebec U.S. roaming on iDEN digital networks Shenzhen Transportation Bureau, China Shenzhen Transportation Bureau in China has licensed the iDEN network for a private system that will include data, making this the first packet data system for iDEN in Asia. The transportation bureau will have up to 10,000 i1000plus handsets, supporting Chinese character display, in the first phase and an additional 30,000 handsets in early 2000. The Shenzhen Transportation Bureau is working with application developers to offer future services such as Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) that will allow a dispatcher to track taxi locations through the drivers i1000plus handsets. The system will be operational in early 2000.

continued from page 1 Capabilities and Applications Motorola has licensed the Phone.com UP.Browser, the high-performance WML (Wireless Markup Language)compliant microbrowser and messaging engine that is designed and optimized for wireless handset devices. The handsets support microbrowser capabilities, delivered directly to the phones LCD screens, allowing users to easily and transparently access information stored on Internet and corporate intranet Web servers and database systems. Users can send and receive e-mail wirelessly or synchronize wireless Internet e-mail directly with their desktop Internet e-mail. The i1000plus and i500plus can also allow users to wirelessly send and receive fax and e-mail messages when connected to popular PDAs, such as 3Coms Palm organizers and Windows CE devices. The i1000plus and i500plus handsets allow users to benefit from applications such as e-mail, scheduling calendars, stock quotes, airline information and phone number look-up. With the i1000plus, users can easily type messages on his or her handset using T9 text input, licensed from T Communications, which allows accelerated egic text entry with just one key press per letter. With a cabled connection to a notebook computer, users can access an enterprise network without the cost and inconvenience of a separate modem. In addition, using standard interface connections, these capabilities can enable iDEN users to send and receive faxes. Using an iDEN packet data connection, a user can access corporate e-mail, perform file transfers and access Internet and intranet sites using a Web browser.
iDEN Unleashes the Power of Data
The i1000plus handset is the first integrated digital handset to take advantage of the power of mobile Internet Protocol (IP) capabilities, which offers customers a number of critical benefits. Because the handset is IP-addressable, it can connect to the Internet much like a computer terminal, enabling wireless real-time access to the Internet, corporate intranets and extranets and wireless modem capabilities when connected to a notebook computer or personal digital assistant. The biggest advantage of the IP-based wireless phone is that it offers virtual access to the Internet without having to establish a dial-up connection, and allows users to take advantage of the ubiquity of the Internet to access information from anywhere in the world. IP packet-switching allows for the following iDEN-enabled communication services: Net mode with IP address Internet/intranet microbrowser E-mail Enterprise network access Over-the-air programming (OAP) Additionally, the iDEN networks unique combination of circuit-switched and packet architectures offers greater flexibility and network efficiency to support a broad array of applications.
