I purchased my Motorola Q from Verizon about 2 years ago which means my contract is about up and I am on the verge of looking for my next phone.

I really like my Motorola Q. There are many functions on the phone that I still need to get familiar with. Call quality all depends on the coverage area you are in - sometimes it is great and other times it is not. Q is very easy to use.

Getting Started

Battery Installation Battery life depends on the network, signal strength, display usage, accumulated data service usage, and accessories used.

Synchronization

Synchronization Two main ways to synchronize the Q phone. It can by synchronized Over the Air (OTA), or via a PC with a cable connection.
Synchronization the phone via OTA
N O T E : You can synchronize your Motorola Q with your companys Microsoft Exchange Server. Contact your system administrator for the required e-mail set-up information, or see the Motorola Q Support site. www.motorola.com/support/Q/

Once you have verified the correct settings with the IT Department. You can Synchronize the phone either Over the Air (OTA) or with a cable connection. Press Start > ActiveSync > Sync
N O T E : If you are out of network coverage, and the Moto Q tries to synchronize three times according to the schedule it is on, and it can not find a network, the synchronization settings automatically will revert to manual synchronization.
To set the synchronization schedule back to the desired frequency, you need to change this under Schedule in ActiveSync
For additional information on troubleshooting for Activesync, please go to www.motorola.com/support/q
When finished, ActiveSync starts to synchronize automatically with the phone. Once synchronization completes, disconnect the phone from the computer.
Synch with a Computer Installing and Setting up ActiveSync
To synchronize information on the phone with a PC, you must install Microsoft ActiveSync 4.1 or above software on the computer. If you do not have a CD-ROM, download the latest ActiveSync software from the Microsoft Window Mobile website: http://microsoft.com/windowsmobile 1. Install ActiveSync on the PC
Synchronization the phone and PC via a cable connection
Once ActiveSync is installed on the PC, connect the phone to the computer and sync. Turn the phone on Connect the phone to the PC using a USB cable Open the ActiveSync icon on the PC
OTA Synchronization Troubleshooting
If you are not receiving e-mails, you will need to verify e-mail set-up, wireless network, and/or e-mail platform settings. See the Motorola Q support site for more information. www.motorola.com/support/Q/

Automatic E-mail Setup

If you have Hotmail or Pocket MSN account see Setting up Hotmail Some e-mail providers allow for automatic e-mail set up. Press Start > Messaging > Outlook E-mail Select Menu > Options > New Account In Your name, enter the display name for e-mail messages In E-mail address, enter the e-mail address for this account

Follow the next steps if you use the Hotmail or MSN e-mail service. Press Start > Pocket MSN Select MSN Hotmail In E-mail address, enter the e-mail address for the account In Password, enter the password for the account Select Next > Menu > Send and Receive
Manual e-mail accounts settings If you tried to automatically set up the account and were prompted for detailed e-mail settings, call your e-mail (internet) service provider for information like: Domain, Server type, (POP3 or IMAP4), Account name, Incoming mail server, Secure Sockets Layer, connections requirements, and Outgoing mail server.

Carrier Hosted E-mail

Please contact your operator, or access their website in order to get information about their hosted email solution, and its compatibility with Windows Mobile(add trademark symbol -r) 5.0 enabled devices.
Receiving and Reading Messages When a message is received, the phone plays an alert and displays New Message with a message indicator such as R. To Read E-mail To open the next message in the list form within an open message, press the Navigation key s to the right; to open the previous message in the list, press the Navigation key s to the left. Connect with Bluetooth

Headset The headset must be charged for two hours prior to starting The headset must be paired with the phone before it can be used. Please see the Bluetooth Pairing Instructions that came with the headset Bluetooth must be turned On in the phone

Pair with Headset Before trying to pair the phone with a Bluetooth headset, make sure the phones Bluetooth power is on and the Bluetooth headset is on and in pairing/bonding mode. Please refer to the instructions that was included with the Bluetooth headset for information about pairing or bonding mode. Press Start > Bluetooth > Bluetooth Manager > Hands-free The phone searches for the device Select the device in which to pair the phone When prompted press the Yes or OK key to pair with the device If necessary, enter the device pass key (0000) > Done When successfully paired, the Bluetooth indicator shows in display

NOTE: More then one Bluetooth headset can be paired with the phone. However, only one headset can have an active connection to the phone at any time.

How to Set up an Email Account on MOTO-Q
Tips for entering information on the Q
Before you follow the instructions in this guide, please take a few minutes to understand the Q keypad and the various text entry methods. A full layout of the Q keypad is in Appendix B. Here are a few tips in following instructions:

Setting up Corporate Email with Exchange Servers
Note: Before setting up your Q to synchronize via ActiveSync, contact your IT administrator to determine if you can synchronize your email over the air. If you can synchronize over the air, follow setup procedures in section 2.1 before setting synchronization via cable sync (section 2.2).
*Setting up Synchronization using ActiveSync on the Q
Exchange Server Email Setup If you did not set up an Exchange Server email account, follow the steps in this section to set up an account now. Work with your Corporate IT department to gather the following info: Mail server address, domain name, and whether your company or email provider requires an encrypted (SSL) connection to the mail server. Your username and password. Note: The Exchange Server settings are case sensitive. Be sure to enter uppercase and lowercase letters properly. 1. Press Start (LSK) 2. Select the ActiveSync Icon
3. Select set up your device to sync with it located on the main ActiveSync screen.
4. Input your mail server address in the Server Address field.
5. Press Next (RSK) 6. Input your user name, password and domain in the appropriate fields. Choose whether they would like to save their password.
7. Press Next (RSK) 8. Choose which data you would like to sync (Contacts, Calendar, E-mail, and/or Tasks). 9. Press Finish (LSK) Note: Further settings are available for Email and Calendar. Select data sync parameters for your calendar and email by pressing Menu>>Settings. You may select more or less data to maintain on your device and the amount of data to sync for each email message. 10. You can choose your Exchange ActiveSync schedule by selecting Menu>>Schedule. Note: Syncing continuously will lead to shorter battery life than selecting a less frequent sync schedule, so carefully consider how often youd like to receive data during peak and non-peak times or day.
Setting up Synchronization using ActiveSync on the Desktop

1. Press Next

2. Select to Synchronize directly with a server running Microsoft Exchange Server. Press Next.
3. Enter the server address, your login, password, and domain. Contact your IT administrator for the correct information. Press Next when complete.
4. Choose what data you would like to sync with the server. If you choose to sync
with the Exchange Server, the device will synchronize over the air with the email server. Press Next when complete. Note: Only Contact, Calendar, Email, and Tasks are synchronized with the Exchange Server.
5. Press Next. 6. Press Finish

Appendix B: How to use the keys on the MOTO-Q
To enter any numeric digits you will use only the Black keys on the left half of the key board. Alphabetic letter are entered using both the Black and White keys. To switch from letters to numbers, you will use the ALT key to switch mode. Hit the ALT key repeatedly until the symbol is ALT (all caps) appears in the upper right corner. Now you can enter one or more numeric digits using the Black keys. To enter special characters, like $, # and -, hit the ALT key repeatedly until the symbol ALT (in all caps) appears in the upper right corner. Now use the White keys to enter the special characters above the letters. To enter lower case alphabetic characters, hit the ALT key repeatedly until the symbol abc (all lower case) appears in the upper right corner. To enter one capital letter, hit the CAPS key once until the symbol Abc appears in the upper right corner. The first character you enter will be capitalized and the rest will be lower case. To enter multiple capital letters in a row, hit the CAPS key twice until the symbol ABC appears in the upper right corner. All the characters you enter will be capitalized until you hit the CAPS key again.
