NEC HT1100

EW BUSINESS-ORIENTED COMPANIES HAVE embraced the growing AV/PC crossover as enthusiastically as NEC with its plasma screens and projectors. But we have to say that, at times, its products have suffered from a desire to please both business and home users. Lets hope this isnt the case with the HT1100. Aesthetically the HT1100 is okay. Its biggest problem is its relative bulk, especially as it doesnt really employ any sculptural tricks to try and distract you from its chunkiness. But the finish is robust and slick enough to stop the HT1100 from actually achieving ugliness. The HT1100 shows off its home cinema credentials with its connections. Most gratifying is a DVI jack, complete with HDCP compatibility therefore able to handle Skys high-def broadcasts when they start, as well as upscaled DVD digital outputs. We were also pleased to find a 15-pin PC connection complete with Scart-to-VGA RGB adaptor; component video inputs for analogue high definition and progressive scan; and the usual lesser quality AV suspects.
ments. The only serious problem is that the projectors range and throw distances are more limited than usual, making it harder to adapt to different (especially small) room sizes. Before we get into the HT1100s performance, we ought to cover one or two of its cleverer features. Perhaps the most important is SweetVision, a processing system that apparently gives the impression of deeper, richer blacks. Theres also an Eco mode for reducing fan noise and boosting bulb life at the expense of a little brightness.

On the level

Kill Bill 2 is generally enjoyable on the HT1100. The standout ability is contrast. While the quoted 3,500:1 figure looks a bit optimistic in practice, theres no doubting that the buried alive sequence we keep coming back to doesnt suffer the intrusion of any greying over of black levels, loss of background detail, or iffy colour tones. Whats more, the HT1100 isnt only good at full black. It displays an impressive subtlety of touch with brightness levels and colours right across the video spectrum, conjuring up a splendidly nuanced look to the low-lit but gaudily decorated interior of Buds trailer. Fine detail levels also manage to impress, but its not all good news. The rainbow effect definitely manifests itself from time to time, especially during dark scenes. And, rather oddly, dark scenes also suffer with a slightly processed look, where you occasionally feel like youre watching the action through some kind of ultra-fine mesh screen. Finally, although not a problem with the generally excellent Kill Bill 2 transfer, we also found the HT1100 to be unforgiving with lower quality sources or DVD transfers, as it tends to over-emphasise any noise they may contain. In the end, the HT1100s curious, almost careless flaws especially the native 4:3 aspect ratio are just that bit too difficult to ignore. Its very far from being a bad projector, but fails to go the extra mile travelled so boldly by this group tests true heroes.

Catch-all contender

There are signs of slight AV/PC schizophrenia with the specifications, however. On the plus side, NEC has employed a six-segment colour wheel to reduce DLPs problems with rainbow colour bands. Whats more, it claims a massively impressive 3,500:1 contrast ratio, together with a maximum 1,100 ANSI Lumens brightness. Please note, though, that you wont be able to achieve that contrast and brightness simultaneously. This is because maximum contrast can only be achieved with an iris lever that reduces the aperture size at which point brightness drops to 880 ANSI Lumens. The (very) bad news is the HT1100s use of a DLP chipset with a native 4:3 ratio instead of the 16:9 ratio so crucial to movies. If you watch a widescreen movie on this projector, you wont be able to use the projectors full pixel count. The HT1100 is reasonably easy to set up, thanks to satisfactory onscreen menus and plentiful picture adjust-

VERDICT A perfectly worthwhile effort but theres definitely room for improvement next time round

Connect every and any video source from PCs to video, the HT1100 is also ready for the latest high bandwidth DVD players using the DVI D digital input with HDCP decryption built in. For use in the home and public areas the HT1100 has 3D geometric image correction, making installations easier while making sure your video picture is perfectly square even if the projector location is not ideal. Sophisticated control of home cinema or commercial systems employing LAN network is also possible.
