NEC LCDs help Seneca College graduate with honors in technology
Quick Facts
Facility: Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada Challenge: Maintain image quality and durability while upgrading to LCD monitors Solution: 19 NEC MultiSync LCD1970VX Date: Summer 2006
The Challenge
Seneca College is comprised of approximately 17,000 full-time students and 90,000 part-time and continuing education students. The college takes pride in having the most up-to-date technology on all of its campus locations. Prior to the latest upgrade, Seneca College used 17 NEC MultiSync FE770 CRTs in their academic and computing labs. Faculty and staff were happy with the durability and performance from these monitors, but Seneca chose to replace them with LCDs to free up a significant amount of desktop space and provide their students with the latest in display technology. Clare Vozza, Seneca Colleges manager of client services, consulted with her IT team to determine the best LCD for the labs. Display image quality was of high concern because many of Senecas students are enrolled in art and computer courses, which require a high resolution. Image quality ranked as the highest consideration when deciding which display to choose during the upgrade. Other factors in selecting a new monitor included warranty, pricing, customer ratings and previous experience with a respected brand name.
Every day, college campuses endure the hustle and bustle of thousands of college students running to classes and extra-curricular activities. Whether its a final paper or an assignment for an upcoming group presentation, computers are always a necessity for students, making a computer lab an in-demand location on college campuses. With an uncommonly constant amount of usage and a usually not-so-deep budget, outstanding durability and high image quality are a must for a labs monitors. Torontos Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology is the largest college in Canada based on student enrollment, consisting of eight main campus locations throughout the greater Toronto area and 260 unique programs. The college offers public academic and computing labs for all students, and facing the above-mentioned obstacles, sought out monitors that would meet all of its performance and quality objectives.
The Solution
Following their monitor evaluation, Seneca Colleges IT department determined NEC was the best fit for its needs. During the summers of 2005 and 2006, the college replaced older CRT monitors with new NEC LCD monitors. The 2006 upgrade was massive, consisting of NEC MultiSync LCD1970VX monitors. The I.T. team evaluated the NEC monitor
With its IT departments concerns of physical durability and image quality, and its students concerns of eyestrain, Seneca College was able to answer them both by choosing NEC LCD monitors for its computer labs on campus.
What could you see with NEC?
based on the specifications, including the resolution and brightness, said Vozza. We found that NEC was the best value for the quality, technology and price. Seneca not only evaluated LCDs on image quality but also physical durability. The IT department wanted displays that would not damage easily if students bumped into them or touched the screen. They were pleased with how well NECs CRT models withstood the daily rigors of their labs and, in their testing, found that its LCDs showed similar characteristics. Through their evaluation Seneca chose to stay with NEC because of the product availability, warranty, pricing and a very positive previous experience with the NEC CRTs.
Before the upgrade, a few students in the computer technology program requested LCD monitors rather than CRTs. Their concern was eyestrain from using CRT units. Since the first implementation of the new displays, Vozza noted positive reactions from students. The MultiSync LCD1970VX displays eliminated this concern and made working on the computer for long periods of time more comfortable and enjoyable. Other reported benefits of using NEC LCDs were increased desktop space, less energy used and brighter screens with no flickering as compared to CRTs. Seneca College prides itself in having the best technology, and we feel that the NEC MultiSync LCD1970VX demonstrates the best in monitor technology and works best for our students needs, said Vozza.
Seneca Colleges computer labs endure heavy traffic on a daily basis, making the 1563 recently installed 19 NEC MultiSync LCD1970VX monitors an ideal display solution for its 100,000+ students.

See inside cover of Users Manual for FCC information. Edges of the display image are not square Use the OSM Geometry Controls to straighten the edges. If possible, position the front of the monitor facing east. Display image is not centered, too small, or too large Use the OSM Size and Position Controls to adjust the image. Thin lines appear on your screen Thin lines are normal for an aperture grille CRT and are not a malfunction. These are shadows from the damper wires used to stabilize the aperture grille and are most noticeable when the screens background is light (usually white). Black vertical lines are visible on the screen Thin vertical black lines on one or both sides of the screen. This minor condition is caused by grille element overlap which can occur during shipping. Position an open white window over the affected area of the screen and maximize the brightness and contrast controls. This will cause localized heating of the overlap which will clear in a few minutes. Be sure to readjust the brightness and contrast controls back to the normal viewing level after this procedure.

MultiSync FE Series
Congratulations! You have just purchased a TCO99 approved and labeled product! Your choice has provided you with a product developed for professional use. Your purchase has also contributed to reducing the burden on the environment and also to the further development of environmentally adapted electronics products.
Why do we have environmentally labelled computers?
In many countries, environmental labelling has become an established method for encouraging the adaptation of goods and services to the environment. The main problem, as far as computers and other electronics equipment are concerned, is that environmentally harmful substances are used both in the products and during the manufacturing. Since it has not been possible for the majority of electronics equipment to be recycled in a satisfactory way, most of these potentially damaging substances sooner or later enter Nature. There are also other characteristics of a computer, such as energy consumption levels, that are important from the viewpoints of both the work (Internal) and natural (external) environments. Since all methods of conventional electricity generation have a negative effect on the environment (acidic and climate-influencing emissions, radioactive waste, etc.), it is vital to conserve energy. Electronics equipment in offices consume an enormous amount of energy since they are often left running continuously.
What does labelling involve?
This product meets the requirements for the TCO99 scheme which provides for international and environmental labelling of personal computers. The labelling scheme was developed as a joint effort by the TCO (The Swedish Confederation of Professional Employees), Svenska Naturskyddsforeningen (The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation) and Statens Energimyndighet (The Swedish National Energy Administration). The requirements cover a wide range of issues: environment, ergonomics, usability, emission of electrical and magnetic fields, energy consumption and electrical and fire safety. The environmental demands concern restrictions on the presence and use of heavy metals, brominated and chlorinated flame retardants, CFCs (freons) and chlorinated solvents, among other things. The product must be prepared for recycling and the manufacturer is obliged to have an environmental plan which must be adhered to in each country where the company implements its operational policy. The energy requirements include a demand that the computer and/or display, after a certain period of inactivity, shall reduce its power consumption to a lower level in one or more stages. The length of time to reactivate the computer shall be reasonable for the user. Labelled products must meet strict environmental demands, for example, in respect of the reduction of electric and magnetic fields, physical and visual ergonomics and good usability.
Environmental Requirements
Flame retardants Flame retardants are present in printed circuit boards, cables, wires, casings and housings. In turn, they delay the spread of fire. Up to thirty percent of the plastic in a computer casing can consist of flame retardant substances. Most flame retardants contain bromine or chloride and these are related to another group of environmental toxins, PCBs, which are suspected to give rise to severe health effects, including reproductive damage in fisheating birds and mammals, due to the bioaccumulative* processes. Flame retardants have been found in human blood and researchers fear that disturbances in foetus development may occur.
MultiSync FE770/FE771SB 17
TCO99 continued
TCO99 demand requires that plastic components weighing more than 25 grams must not contain flame retardants with organically bound chlorine and bromine. Flame retardants are allowed in the printed circuit boards since no substitutes are available.

Lead can be found in picture tubes, display screens, solders and capacitors. Lead damages the nervous system and in higher doses, causes lead poisoning. TCO99 requirement permits the inclusion of lead since no replacement has yet been developed.
Cadmium**
Cadmium is present in rechargeable batteries and in the colourgenerating layers of certain computer displays. Cadmium damages the nervous system and is toxic in high doses. TCO99 requirement states that batteries, the colourgenerating layers of display screens and the electrical or electronics components must not contain any cadmium.
Mercury**
Mercury is sometimes found in batteries, relays and switches, Mercury damages the nervous system and is toxic in high doses. TCO99 requirement states that batteries may not contain any Mercury. It also demands that no mercury is present in any of the electrical or electronics components associated with the display unit.
CFCs (freons)
CFCs (freons) are sometimes used for washing printed circuit boards. CFCs break down ozone and thereby damage the ozone layer in the stratosphere, causing increased reception on Earth of ultraviolet light with consequent increased risks of skin cancer (malignant melanoma). The relevant TCO99 requirement; Neither CFCs nor HCFCs may be used during the manufacturing and assembly of the product or its packaging. * Bio-accumulative is defined as substances which accumulate within living organisms. ** Lead, Cadmium and Mercury are heavy metals which are Bio-accumulative.
