2.2.2 Toolbar
The table below provides you with a quick overview of the most important icons in Cover Designer. The icons on the toolbar have the following functions: Selection tool to mark objects Line tool to draw lines Rectangle tool to draw rectangles and squares Oval tool to draw ellipses and circles Text box tool to insert a text box. Double click to open a window for text entry (block of text) Artistic text tool to insert artistic text Track list tool to insert a track list for audio CDs etc. Directory tool to insert a directory for data CDs etc. Image tool to insert saved images Field tool to insert fields, such as title, artist, number of tracks, playing time.
Basic points for editing the inserted tool elements: Change the size of the marked element by dragging the drag points with the mouse. Turn the marked elements by dragging the small curved arrow with the mouse. Alter the position by drag & drop, i.e. the marked element is held by the mouse and dragged to the desired position. Exact editing of marked elements, either with a double click or by right clicking.

Line Tool
The line tool is activated by clicking on the Draw a line by dragging the mouse pointer. Edit the marked line exactly by right clicking. A context menu will then open. button and allows you to:

Arrange the elements in the foreground, in the background, one level forward or one level back. Align elements exactly by activating or deactivating various options.

'Geometry'
Determine the exact position of elements, either by input or by using the arrow keys.
'Properties'
Select the color and thickness of the pen line.
Change the width of the pen line in the 'Width' field, either by input or by using the arrow keys. Select a color by clicking on a hue in the color circle. The color in the 'Color' field will then change according to your choice. The brightness can be regulated if necessary by moving the marker on the color bar on the right. Colors can be defined by input, by selecting color values in the 'Hue', 'Saturation' and 'Brightness' fields or by selecting color proportions in the 'Red', 'Green' and 'Blue' fields.

The functions 'Group', 'Ungroup', 'Arrange' 'Align' and 'Geometry' in the context menu are identical with those described above (see chapter 'Rectangle tool'). 'Bend' 'Convert to curve' 'Properties' Bend the graphic text, e.g. to create a label. Text blocks in a text box cannot be bent. Convert a graphic text to a graphic element. After the conversion it can no longer be edited, bent or formatted.
Edit graphic text on the tab 'Font'. Select the font in the 'Font' region by clicking on the desired font. Select the font style in the 'Font style' region by clicking on, e.g. 'Normal' or 'Italic'. If the 'Crossed out' box is activated the graphic text will appear crossed out. If the 'Underlined' box is activated the graphic text will appear underlined. Change the font size in the region 'Size' by clicking on the

Enter an individual text for displaying in free fields in the field 'Free text'. Enter an individual text to be placed either before or after the content of each field in the fields 'Text before' or 'Text after'. By activating the box 'Fixed size' the field text wil always be of the same size. This function is not available for bent texts. The tabs 'Pen', 'Brush', 'Text' and 'Font' are described in detail in the chapter 'Editing fields'.

4.3.2 Tab 'Elements'
The tab 'Elements' is in the foreground for: Printing a document or single elements by activating or deactivating the corresponding box. Setting the printing options for the marked element, e.g. the number of copies or the type of paper. If the box 'Print on normal paper' is inactive, it will be printed on profile paper. Preview of the print with the current settings in the layout window. With the small arrows in the lower right corner you can browse through the pages.
In this printing preview the printing options can be set for each document and each individual cover element.

4.4 Printing preview
The window 'Printing preview' can be opened by clicking on the 'Printing preview' in the 'File' menu.
This window shows the printing preview of the selected document together with the current printing settings. With the buttons 'Previous page' and 'Next Page' you can browse through the pages.
Starting from this printing preview the whole document can be printed at once, just by clicking on the 'Print' button. A selection of specific elements is not possible here.

4.5 Printer setup
The window 'Printer setup' can be opened by clicking the 'Printer setup' command in the 'File' menu.
'Printer': Select the printer using the drop down button. 'Paper': Select the paper size and the paper source using the drop down list in the fields 'Size' and 'Source'. 'Orientation': Select the print orientation by activating the option 'Portrait' or 'Landscape'. Button 'Networking': Open a connection to a shared network folder by clicking the Button 'Networking'. Button 'Properties': Customize advanced printer options for layout and paper quality by clicking on the button 'Properties'. The options available here depend on your type of printer.
4.6 Paper Stocks Selection
Cover Designer lets you to choose between pre-defined or user-defined paper stocks. In this manual, we will describe how to work with pre-defined paper stocks. 1. Select 'Paper Stocks' on the 'File' menu. Click on 'Predefined stocks' in the 'Paper Stocks' window that then appears. A list of available paper stocks is displayed. In the center of the window, you see the number of paper stocks separated into pre-defined and user-defined. The 'Add Stock', 'Import' and 'Export' buttons are inactive if you have selected pre-defined paper stocks.
The first step is to select a cover and CD, DVD, Business card type, because different cover elements are available depending on the selection you make. Start Cover Designer. The 'New Document' window appears in the foreground.

The document templates that are available for the CD type appear in the center of the window. Define the number of disks in the 'Disks' field. Either enter the value or use the arrow keys. If the 'Create new template' check box is checked, a new reusable template is created instead of a new document (refer to the 'Document Templates' chapter). To make the first selection, proceed as follows: 1. On the 'New Document' window, click on the 'Default' icon to select the cover type. 2. Click on the 'Audio' tab to create a cover for a music CD. 3. Click on the 'OK' button. The following window is displayed.

If it is not necessary to choose a CD type, e.g. if you always generate audio CD covers, the cover can be opened quickly by double clicking the icon.

2. Because you want a custom image to appear on the front of every booklet, do not make any entries on this tab. Click on the 'Booklet (Rear)' tab. 3. Click on the button to add an image, select the image you want and click on the 'Open' button. 4. Position the image at the place you want to put it and click with the mouse to add the image. 5. Edit the image as necessary, for example to resize it.

Using the 'Background settings' in the 'Object menu', it is especially easy to add and fit a picture to the frame size.

9. Click on the 'Disk 1' tab. 10. Click on the button and select the desired field from among those displayed and position it on the disk. Continue adding each field you want. In the example below, two fields, 'Disk artist' and 'Disk title' are added and are fit to the curvature of the disk using the 'Bend' function.
11. On the 'File' menu, select the 'Save' command, assign a name to the format template and click on the 'Save' button.

6.2 Load or Modify Document Template
There is always a saved document template available to the user. Cover Designer templates have the ending 'nct', whereas documents have the ending 'ncd'. 1. On the 'File' menu, select the 'Open' command. 2. Click on the dropdown button in the 'File type' field, select the file type (.nct), select the template you want and click on the 'Open' button.
The contents of the various cover elements are displayed in the preview area, just the way they were created.
3. Click on the 'No' button to create a new document.
Clicking on the 'Yes' button opens the document template, which you can then modify.

Image Editing
7.1 Introduction
The quickest way to add an image is to use the icon on the toolbar. Double clicking on the image opens the 'Properties' window, which contains the 'Effects' button and the 'Stretching' region.
7.2 Using Effects
Cover Designer's effects give you unlimited scope to use your imagination. The image can be varied in countless ways, giving you complete and total assurance that you can design your own individual cover. The following section introduces the effects and illustrates some selected effects using examples.

7.2.1 Effects 'Adjust'
The effects of 'Color adjustment' allow the following changes to the current image. Brightness: Changes the brightness, using a slider on a scale from 100 to +100. Contrast: Changes the contrast, using a slider on a scale of 100 to +100 (see the following example) Gamma: Changes the brightness of the mid-tone values, using a slider on a scale of 0.01 to 10. Equalize: Changes the 'roughness' by clicking on the effect. Below is an example of 'Adjust' effects. Select the 'Contrast' effect for image editing.
The preview window appears. You create the following high-contrast image by moving the slider to the right on the scale.
7.2.2 Effects 'Filters'
The 'Filter' effects enable you to make the following changes to your current image: Emboss: Creates a relief of the image. Erode: Creates a watercolor effect by clicking on the command. Mosaic: Creates a mosaic of your image, using a slider on a scale from 1 to 63.

Outline: Draws outlines for image surfaces by clicking on the effect. Parabolic: Creates a concave or convex view of the image by clicking on the effect (see the following example). Posterise: Creates an oil painting effect, using a slider on a scale from 2 to 8. Sharpen: Sharpens the picture, using a slider on a scale from 1 to 10. Soften: Makes the picture softer using a slider on a scale from 1 to 10. Solarize: Inverts the light influence, using a slider on a scale from 0 to 255. An example of 'Filter' effects. Select 'Parabolic' and then 'Concave' to edit the image.

9.2.4 'Font' Tab
Use the 'Properties' window with the 'Font' tab in the foreground for: selecting the font type in the 'Font' section by clicking on the font you want. selecting the style type in the 'Font Style' area by clicking on 'Regular' or 'Italic', for example. If the 'Strikeout' check box is checked, the artistic text appears as strikeout. If the 'Underline' check box is checked, the artistic text appears as underlined. changing the font size in the 'Size' area by clicking on the size value that you want. displaying all changes in the 'Sample' area before you accept the entries by clicking on the 'OK' button.

10 Document Datas
10.1 Introduction
Document data define the structure and content of Cover Designer elements. They were defined during creation of the cover and definition of the CD type (see 'Selecting the type of cover, CD, DVD or business card'). The corresponding cover elements appear at the lower frame of the work space. Standard: DVD cover: Multibox: Maxi CD: Slim pack: Mini CD: Business card: The cover elements for a normal CD with one disk consist of a booklet (front and back), inlay and disk. The cover elements for a DVD cover consist of a booklet, an inlay and a disk. The cover elements for a multibox consist of a booklet (front and back), inlay and disks (at least 2). The cover elements for a maxi CD consist of an inlay and disks. The cover elements for a slim pack consist of a booklet (front), booklet (rear) and a disk. The cover elements of a Mini CD consist of an inlay (front), inlay (rear) and a disk. One cover element for a business card in rounded shape.
Business card One cover element for a business card in rectangular shape (rectangular): You can add to or change document data later. At this point, you can not only make manual entries, but you can also name the files on the CD. If a directory or track list is created later, the filename, location and size of data files, and for audio files the artist, title and length, are displayed.

10.2 Adding Files and Tracks
When you created a document, you defined the CD type, among other things. You could not supply more specific information about the data contained therein. It is very easy, however, to add this information. 1. On the 'Data' menu, select the 'Document data' command. The document is selected, and you can enter a title, the year of creation and the artist or publisher. If you click on the 'Apply to all subitems', this entry is carried over to all data and tracks.

You can enter the artist on the track in the 'Artist' field. You can enter the playing time of the track in the 'Playing time' field. You can enter additional information about the track in the 'Extended Info' field.
10.3.4 Deleting Tracks
1. Select the 'Document data' command on the 'Data' menu and select 'Audio data'. 2. Click on the '+' button to display the existing tracks. 3. Click on the track you want to delete and then click on the 'Delete' button. Repeat these steps for each track that you want to delete. You can delete all existing tracks by clicking on the 'Delete all' button when 'Audio data' is selected. 4. Click on the 'OK' button to save the changes and close the window. Files, folders and tracks can also be managed with the keyboard shortcuts for 'Copy' (Ctrl+C), 'Cut' (Ctrl+X), 'Paste' (Ctrl+V) and 'Delete' (Del) or by using the context menu on the right-hand mouse button. Moving is done by drag & drop, meaning that marked elements are held with the mouse and dragged to the correct position.

11 Adding Fields
11.1 Introduction
Fields are tools you can use to keep document data up to date quickly and easily. You can use them by clicking on the button in the toolbar.
If a title has been assigned to the document, the title appears when the 'Title' field is added. If the title is changed later, the new title appears automatically.
Fields are added as artistic text. You can use the 'Bent' function to create bent text. You cannot, however, convert fields into curves.

Before the document is printed, you can set different printing options. With a LightScribe recorder and Nero CoverDesigner, you can print labels directly on LightScribe media (see Printing LightScribe Labels 65). With a Labelflash recorder and Nero CoverDesigner, you can print labels directly on Labelflash media (see Printing Labelflash Labels 67). Creating and burning labels with LightScribe or Labelflash is only available in the full version. You can always upgrade your Essentials version at www.nero.com to get the full version with all the functions.

Starting The Program
To start Nero CoverDesigner via Nero StartSmart, proceed as follows:
1. Click the StartSmart icon.
The Nero StartSmart window opens.

Main Screen
The main screen is the starting point for all actions that can be performed using Nero CoverDesigner. The screen consists of a menu bar, several toolbars, and a drawing area.

Menu Bar
The menu bar offers the following menus: Menu File Opens the File menu, which provides file-related functions such as open, save, and close. In addition, you can save files as templates, configure your printer and paper stock, make program-specific settings, as well as import and export information from and to Nero Digital files. Opens the Edit menu, which provides editing functions such as cut, paste, duplicate, and delete. In addition, you can copy properties, change the applied template, change the backgrounds of the cover elements as well as add or delete cover elements as desired. Opens the View menu, which allows you to hide and display screen and cover elements. In addition, you can display and use grid and guide lines as well as display objects in the editable area only.

Main Screen Menu Object Opens the Object menu, which you can use for editing the individual objects of your drawing: You can insert objects, change their shape and position, group objects, as well as open the Properties window where you can edit the properties of objects. In addition, you can insert a background and set default settings for objects. Opens the Data menu with the Document Data entry, which allows you to enter document-specific data such as the disc name or track entries. Opens the Window menu, which allows you to change the position and arrangement of multiple open documents on the main screen (drawing area). All open documents can also be closed. Opens the TWAIN menu, which allows you to scan pictures if a scanner is attached. Opens the Help menu, which offers information on different subjects.
3.2.3 Text Toolbar
The following icons are available in the Text toolbar: Changes the selected text to bold. Changes the selected text to italics. Underlines the selected text.
3.2.4 Modify Objects Toolbar
The following icons are available in the Modify Objects toolbar: Opens the Properties window for a selected object. Applies a margin color to the selected object. Applies a fill color to the selected object. Positions the selected object in front of all the others. Moves the selected object behind all the others. Moves the selected object one position towards the top. Moves the selected object one position towards the back. Groups multiple selected objects. Ungroups objects.

3.2.5 Tools Toolbar
The following icons are available in the Tool toolbar: Activates the selection tool, used to select objects. Activates the line tool, which you can use to insert a line. Activates the rectangle tool, which you can use to insert a rectangle.
Main Screen Activates the ellipse tool, which you can use to insert an ellipse. Activates the text tool, which you can use to insert a text graphic. Activates the text box tool, which you can use to insert a text box. Activates the track list tool, which you can use to insert a track list. A track list is a list of audio files (tracks). Activates the directory tool, which you can use to insert a folder. The folder refers to data files. Activates the image tool, which you can use to insert an image. Activates the field tool, which you can use to insert different fields.
Track lists, directories, and fields are dynamic objects. The contents that are entered in the document data are entered here. You can modify this data as well. Dynamic objects are particularly useful for creating templates.
3.2.6 Align Toolbar
The following icons are available in the Align toolbar: Aligns the object to the left margin. Centers the object horizontally. Aligns the object to the right margin. Aligns the object to the top margin. Centers the object vertically. Aligns the object to the bottom margin. Opens the Align elements window. Here you can align the object relative to another object. 1. Click the File > New Cover from Nero Digital menu.
The Open window is opened.
2. Select a Nero Digital file that contains a cover and then click the Open button.
The New Document window is opened; the Custom document type is selected.
3. If you want to design a cover for Nero Digital audio, click the Audio tab.
If you want to design a cover for Nero Digital video, click the Video tab.
4. Select the Nero Digital Cover template. 5. Click the OK button.
The New Document window is closed. In the drawing area, the cover elements that were stored in the Nero Digital file are displayed. The cover is used as the background picture.
You have created a new Nero Digital document and can now finish the design.

Creating a New Document or Image Document
To create a new document or picture document, proceed as follows:
1. If you want to create a new document, click the

1. Click the File > New Cover from Picture menu. The Open window is opened. The New Document window is opened. 2. Select the desired image file and then click the Open button.
3. Select a document type from the left selection list.
The right selection list displays the templates for the selected document type; the Audio
tab is selected by default.
4. Click one of the tabs in the right selection list to select a disc type.
The selection list displays the templates for the selected document and disc type.
5. Select an already designed template or the Empty Document template from the selection
list on the right.
The selected template is displayed in the preview area.
6. If applicable, enter the number of discs that the document should contain.
You can increase the number of discs in the document afterwards by adding a disc to the document data.
7. Click the OK button.
The New Document window is closed. If you selected a template that contains dynamic
objects, the Document Data window is opened.
2. Select a field type.
You have successfully inserted an object. Now you can edit it and continue designing the
cover. The inserted object is automatically selected and displays a frame with the anchor points of the frame and a rotation arrow.
Editing an Object
You can edit an inserted object with Nero CoverDesigner. You can modify the size, shape, position, and, if desired, color.
Designing The Cover Element In order to change the size, shape, or position of an object, proceed as follows:
1. Click the
icon (selection tool) on the toolbar.
2. Select the object that you want to edit.
A frame with anchor points and a rotation arrow are displayed around the object.
3. To change the position, size, and/or rotation of an object precisely:
1. Click the Object > Geometry menu. The Geometry window is opened. 2. Enter the desired position, size, and angle of rotation. 3. Click the OK button. The window is closed and the object is modified to match your new entries.
4. To align an object precisely in the drawing area:
1. Click the Object > Align menu. The Align Elements window is opened. 2. Set the desired options. 3. Click the OK button. object. The window is closed and the object is positioned according to your new entries.
5. To change the position of an object manually, hold down the mouse button and move the 6. To change the position of the midpoint of a bent text:
1. Click on the midpoint. The mouse pointer changes to a crosshair. The position of the midpoint is modified. 2. Move the midpoint while holding down the mouse button.
7. To change the size or shape of an object manually:
1. Move the mouse pointer over an anchor point on the frame. The mouse pointer changes to a double arrow that shows you which direction you can pull the object in. The object becomes larger or smaller.
2. Click the anchor point and pull it in the desired direction.
8. To change the rotation of an object manually:
1. Move the mouse pointer over the rotation arrow of the frame. The mouse pointer changes to a rotation arrow.
Designing The Cover Element 2. Click the rotation arrow and rotate the object in the desired direction. The rotation of the object is changed.
Document Data Window The next level, the second one, indicates the discs that are contained in the project. You can add up to four discs to the Document element. You can specify a disc type for each disc; this entry affects the third and fourth levels. There are four disc types you can choose from:
Audio for the Audio CD disc type Data for data discs Audio + Data for the audio and data disc type Video for video discs
By default, the disc type that you selected when you created the document in the New Document window is used for the discs. The third level contains the data type or types that that are contained on the disc of the selected type. An Audio CD, for example, contains audio files in other words, the data type Audio/Chapter Data. A data disc contains pure data in other words, the data type File System. The fourth level contains the contents of the disc under its corresponding data type. Audio files (tracks), for example, are listed under Audio/Chapter Data, and data files under the File System data type.
Document
For the Document element, the following input options are available in the Document area on the right: Title Specifies the title of the document. By default, the document title is applied to the Subtitle input field for the disc as well. This information is used for the Title field type. Year of release Artist/Publisher Apply to all subitems Specifies the release year. This information is used for the Year field type. Specifies the artist or publisher. This information is used for the Artist field type. Applies the artist or publisher entry to the corresponding input fields Artist/Publisher for the Disc and Artist for the Tracks. Adds a disc to the document data. Up to four discs can be added. The corresponding tabs from Disc 1 to Disc 4 with the new cover element for the disc label are added to the document.
Add Disc
For the Disc element, the following input options are available in the Disc area on the right: Subtitles Specifies the title of the disc. By default, the document title is applied to the input field. This information is used for the Disc Title field type. Type Specifies the disc type. Four types are available: Audio, Data, Audio + Data and Video. Depending on the selected disc type, the disc will contain different data types on the next level. This information is used for the Disc Type field. Artist/Publisher Apply to all subitems Erase Import Data Specifies the artist or publisher of the disc. This information is used for the Disc Artist field type. Applies the artist or publisher entry to the Artist input field for the tracks. Deletes the disc from the document data and its corresponding tab from the document. Opens the Read An Import File window, which you can use to select a CDC file.
Audio/Chapter Data
Audio/Chapter Data appears as an entry for the Audio, Audio + Data, and Video disc types. Information about the track number and total playing time is displayed in the Audio/Chapter Data area on the right. The following buttons are available: Add Track Delete All Adds a track entry to the data. Deletes all tracks from the data.
File System
File System appears as an entry for the Data, Audio + Data, and Video disc types. Information about the number of entries and the total size is displayed in the File System area on the right. The following buttons are available: Add Files Opens the Select the Files You Want to Add to the Disc window so that you can select a file. A new entry is added to the data and the file information is applied.
Document Data Window Delete All Adding folders Deletes all file entries from the data. Opens the Browse for Folder window in which a folder can be selected. The folder is added to the data as a file entry.
Video/Picture Data
Video/Picture Data appears as an entry for the Video disc type. The number of pictures is displayed in the Video / Screen Shot Data area on the right. The following buttons are available: Adding a Picture Delete All Displays the Open window so that you can select an image. A new entry is added to the data and the file information is automatically applied; the image is stored in the Nero CoverDesigner document. Deletes all file entries from the data.
Adding an Entry When you add an entry to the data, the information from the entry is applied to the document data, and the data structure is expanded accordingly. Adding a Picture If you add a picture, the picture is stored in the document as well. Tracks, folders, and data files are not stored in the document.

8.6.1 Track/Chapter
For the Track/Chapter data entry, the following input options are available in the Audio Track area on the right: Title Artist Playing Time Extended Info Erase Specifies the title of the track. Specifies the artist of the track. Specifies the playing time of the track. Provides additional information about the track. Deletes the track entry.
8.6.2 File Information
For the File Information data entry, the size and path of the file are displayed in the Audio Track area on the right. The following input options are available: Title Erase Specifies the title of the file. Deletes the file entry.
8.6.3 Picture
For the Picture File data entry, the following input options are available in the area on the right: Title Erase Specifies the title of the picture. Deletes the picture entry.

Brightness Slider
Determines the brightness of the outline color. You set the desired value with the slider. You can see the brightness that has been selected in the Color display field.
Sets the hue. You can enter a value between 0 and 255. The square moves around the radius of the color circle counterclockwise beginning on the right with the value 0 = red. Defines the saturation of the color. You can enter a value between 0 and 255. The square moves across the color circle in a straight line towards the exterior. A saturation of 255 means that one color component has a value of 255 and the other two both have a value of 0. Determines the brightness of the color. You can enter a value between 0 and 255. The brightness slider moves upwards or downwards. 255 means maximum brightness. Defines the red component of the color. You can enter a value between 0 and 255. 255 being completely red. Defines the green component of the color. You can enter a value between 0 and 255. 255 being completely green. Defines the blue component of the color. You can enter a value between 0 and 255. 255 being completely blue.

The Text tab provides configuration options and determines the content of the Text and Field objects. The following setting options are available: Read-only If the input field in the Content area is grayed out, the text can no longer be modified. This option is particularly useful when you are creating templates. Bends the text with the lower edge around a midpoint. Rotates the text by 180 degrees, i.e., the text is rotated with its top edge around the midpoint. This option is only available if the Bent check box is selected. Defines the contents of the text. For Field objects, this option is grayed out because the contents are dynamically generated from the document data.

Text Box Tab
You enter the contents of the text box on the Text Box tab. Unlike artistic text, a line break is possible in a text box. The usual text editing options are available: font and size selection, bold face, cursive, underline, align, color, copy, and paste. The following check boxes are available: Fit to shape Read-only Displays the text in the editable area only, even if the text box lies partially outside. The font size is not changed. Grays out the contents of the tab so that the text can no longer be modified. This option is particularly useful when you are creating templates.

Properties And Background Properties Window Erode Mosaic Generates a watercolor version of the picture, making the picture softer and coarser. Opens the Mosaic window with before and after views of the picture. Move the Mosaic slider to the right to make the picture coarser, creating a mosaic effect. Draws the edges of the surfaces in the picture, generating an outline effect. Generates a convex view. Generates a concave view. Opens the Posterize window with before and after views of the picture. Move the Posterize slider right or left to create an oil painting effect. Opens the Sharpen window with before and after views of the picture. Move the Sharpness slider to the right to make the picture sharper and harder. Opens the Solarize window with before and after views of the picture. Move the Solarize slider to the left to strengthen the lighting effect. Move the slider completely to the left to invert the values and create a negative. Opens the Swirl window with before and after views of the image. Move the Swirl slider right or left to swirl the image to the right or left. Opens the Rotate window with before and after views of the image. Move the Rotate slider to the right to rotate the image 90, 180 or 270.

Import Picture Tab
The Import Picture tab provides the following setting options: Import picture, if possible Picture to import Activates the Picture to import drop-down menu. Selects the image that should be imported. The following entries are available: Nothing: No image is imported. Thumbnail: Imports a preview image when you start Nero CoverDesigner from Nero Burning ROM and have created a compilation with the Audio Book CD disc format. This feature is particularly useful for creating templates for Audio Book CDs. Video Picture: Imports a picture than you have added to the Video/Picture Data entry in the document data. You can determine which picture is imported with the Disc Number and Picture Number fields. CoverArt: Imports an image from a Nero Digital file (if it is technically possible). Import Original Picture Imports the specified image. If the image has been modified, you can use this button to import the original image again.

The Properties tab contains three areas: Print Borders, Print Crop Marks, and Miscellaneous.

16.1.2 Elements Tab
The Elements tab contains a selection list, a preview area, and configuration options. You can select the cover elements to print in the selection list. The preview area shows how the cover elements that are to be printed will appear on the page. The paper stock that the currently displayed cover elements will be printed on is displayed below the preview area. Cover elements that will be printed are displayed in blue cover elements that will not be printed are displayed in gray.

The following configuration options are available on the Elements tab: Input field Copies of the Element Check box Print on normal paper Specifies how many times the selected cover element should be printed. Prints the selected cover element on normal paper. This check box is only available if the normal paper stock has not been assigned to the cover element.

17.1 Printer Calibration
With Nero CoverDesigner, you can calibrate your printer to ensure precise print alignments. We recommend that you calibrate your printer once after you have selected the paper stock and printer. To calibrate you printer, proceed as follows:
1. Prior to calibration, select the desired paper stock and the printer. 2. Click the File > Preferences menu.
The Application Preferences window is opened.
3. Click the Printing tab. 4. Click the Print Calibration Sheet button.
The calibration sheet is printed.
5. Fold the calibration sheet in the middle horizontally and vertically. 6. Unfold the calibration sheet and read the values at which both fold lines cross the axis. 7. If the fold lines do not cross in the middle of the axis, enter the horizontal and vertical values
Printing LightScribe Label
If you have a LightScribe recorder connected, you can also print the label side of a LightScribe CD/DVD with Nero CoverDesigner. The label side of the disc has a special color or thermal layer which is heated by the laser in the recorder so that pictures and text are printed. This function is only available in recorders that support LightScribe technology. To print a LightScribe label, proceed as follows:
1. Create a new document with the LightScribe document type.
The document contains a Disk 1 tab with the cover element for the disc label.
2. Design the disc label as desired. 3. Click the
The LightScribe Print Properties window is opened.
4. Set the desired print options. 5. Insert a recordable LightScribe disc into the LightScribe recorder with the label side facing
6. Click the Print button.
The printing process begins. You can monitor the process status with the progress bar.
As soon as the printing is finished, the Nero LightScribe window is opened and displays a message about the result of the printing process.
You have successfully created and printed a custom LightScribe label.
18.1 LightScribe Print Properties Window
You can customize the print properties of your LightScribe label to suit your requirements in the LightScribe Print Properties window.
LightScribe Print Properties window
The following options are available: Area Print contrast Input field Number of copies Drop-down menu Drive Check box Automatically shut down the PC when done Button Print Button Preview Opens the LightScribe Print Preview dialog box. A print preview of the label is displayed here. Defines the desired recorder. Available only if multiple LightScribe recorders are available. Shuts down the computer after the label has been printed (if possible). Starts printing the label. Adjusts the desired print quality. This option button is set to Normal by default. Defines the number of copies you require.
Printing Labelflash Label
You can print a label on the label and/or data side of a Labelflash DVD with Nero CoverDesigner. This function is only available in the full version. You can always upgrade your Essentials version at www.nero.com to get the full version with all the functions. This feature is only available with a Labelflash recorder. To print a Labelflash label on the label side or a DiskT@2 on the data side of your DVD, proceed as follows:
1. Create a new document with any document type, e.g. Standard. 2. Click the Disc 1 tab. 3. Edit the disc label as desired. 4. Click the
The Labelflash Print Properties window is opened.
5. Set the desired print options. 6. Select the side that you want to print on.
The logo in the bottom left corner displays the corresponding Labelflash or DiskT@2 logo.
7. If you want to print a Labelflash label on the label side, insert a blank Labelflash disc in the
recorder with the label side facing down. If you want to print a DiskT@2 on the data side, insert a blank Labelflash disc with the data side facing down in the recorder.
8. Click the OK button.
The Labelflash Print or DiskT@2 Print window is opened and the print process starts.
You can monitor the process status with the progress bar. As soon as printing is finished, a window is opened, indicating the result of the printing process.
You have successfully created and printed a custom Labelflash label or a DiskT@2.

19.1 Labelflash Print Properties Window

The following configuration options and buttons are available: Drop-down menu Profile for Slider Contrast level Drop-down menu Rotation speed Option button Data Side Option button Labels Option button Both Sides Specifies that the label side should be printed on by default. Specifies that both sides should be printed on by default. Specifies that the data side should be printed on by default. Specifies the rotation speed of the DVD. Adjusts the desired print quality. Select Custom to change the contrast level and rotation speed. Specifies the contrast level for printing.
Printing Labelflash Label Button Print Preview Check box Eject disc after printing Button Burn (is displayed instead of the OK button) Starts the print process. Opens the Print Preview window, which shows an approximation of what the label will look like on the Labelflash DVD. Ejects the disc after printing is complete.
Program Settings
20.1 Application Preferences Window
You can make settings that determine the general appearance and behavior of Nero CoverDesigner in the Application Preferences window. You can open the window by clicking the File > Preferences menu. The window contains the following tabs: General Folders Paper Stocks Print Undo Provides general setting options for Nero CoverDesigner such as displaying info messages, and country-specific measurement units. Specifies the path for documents, templates, and imported files. Provides setting options for paper stocks. Specifies the bleed area and allows you to calibrate your printer Offers options for undoing actions. You can specify the maximum reserved memory, the number of possible undo steps, or unlimited undo steps here. Allows you to specify setting options for LightScribe recorders such as the print quality, default drive (if multiple LightScribe recorders are installed), default label template, and print resolution. These setting options are only used if a LightScribe recorder is available.

20.2 Specifying Default Settings For Objects
In Nero CoverDesigner, you can specify default settings for objects. The default settings determine the entries in the tabs of the Properties window for an object. Default settings cannot be configured for pictures. To specify default settings for objects, proceed as follows:
1. To specify default settings for geometric objects:
1. Click the Object > Default Graphic Properties menu. The Default Properties window with the Pen and Brush tabs is opened. 2. Specify the desired properties in the tabs. 3. Click the OK button. The window is closed. Geometric objects will now be inserted with the selected properties by default.
2. To configure default settings for artistic text and fields:
1. Click the Object > Default Artistic Text Properties menu. The Default Properties window with the Pen, Brush, Font, and Field tabs is opened.
2. Specify the desired properties in the tabs. 3. Click the OK button. The window is closed. Artistic text and fields will now be inserted with the selected properties by default.
3. To configure default settings for text boxes, track lists, and folders:
1. Click the Object > Default Text Box Properties menu. The Default Properties window with the Pen, Brush, Folder, and Tracks tabs is opened.
2. Specify the desired properties in the tabs. 3. Click the OK button. The window is closed. Text boxes, track lists, and folders will now be inserted with the selected properties by default.
You have successfully configured the default settings for objects.
Changes made on the tabs may sometimes not apply to all objects.
