Wireless Network Configuration
Ad-hoc Mode (Peer-to-Peer Workgroup)
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) standard for wireless LANs (WLANs), 802.11 offers two methods for configuring a wireless network ad-hoc and infrastructure. In an ad-hoc network, computers are brought together as needed; thus, there is no structure or fixed points to the network each node can generally communicate with any other node. There is no access point involved in this configuration. It enables you to quickly set up a small wireless workgroup and allows workgroup members to exchange data or share printers as supported by Microsoft Networking in the various Windows operating systems. Some vendors also refer to ad-hoc networking as peer-topeer workgroup networking.
In this configuration, network packets are directly sent and received by the intended transmitting and receiving stations. As long as the stations are within range of one another, this is the easiest and least expensive way to set up a wireless network. To set up an ad-hoc workgroup operating with standard protocols, do the following:
Set all stations to connect in Ad-hoc mode (or Peer-to-Peer workgroup mode). Set all stations to use the same network name (or SSID). Please refer to page 6 for more information. Set all stations to use no WEP encryption key or an identical WEP encryption key. Set all stations to use the same wireless channel for communication.
With a wireless access point, you can put the wireless LAN into the infrastructure mode. It provides wireless connectivity to multiple wireless network devices within a fixed range or area of coverage, interacting with a wireless node via an antenna. In the infrastructure mode, the wireless access point converts airwave data into wired Ethernet data, acting as a bridge between the wired LAN and wireless clients. Connecting multiple HE102 Wireless Access Points via a wired Ethernet backbone can further extend the wireless network coverage. As a mobile computing device moves out of the range of one access point, it moves into the range of another. As a result, wireless clients can freely roam from one access point domain to another and still maintain seamless network connection. 5
To set up an infrastructure network operating with standard protocols, do the following:
Set all wireless stations to connect in infrastructure mode Set all stations to use the same network name (or SSID). Set all wireless access points to use the same network name (or ESSID). For more information, please refer to page 7. Set all stations to use no WEP encryption key or an identical WEP encryption key as the one used in Access points. Set up wireless channels used by individual access points. (It is not necessary to set channels on the stations as the stations will automatically scan through all channels for the nearest access point.)
Service Set Identification (SSID)
The Service Set Identification (SSID) is a thirty-two alphanumeric character (maximum) string identifying the wireless local area network. Some vendors refer to the SSID as network name. In order for stations to communicate with each other, all stations must be configured with the same SSID.
A wireless LAN consisting of nodes operating in ad-hoc configuration without an access point is called a Basic Service Set (BSS). All nodes in a BSS must use the same Basic Service Set ID (BSSID). In an infrastructure configuration with access points, multiple BSS can be configured to form an Extended Service Set (ESS). In this configuration, the access points are configured with the same Extended Service Set ID (ESSID). Wireless clients configured with the same ESSID can freely roam from one access point domain to another and still maintain seamless connection to the network
Authentication and WEP Encryption
The absence of a physical connection between nodes makes the wireless links vulnerable to information theft. To provide a certain level of security, IEEE 802.11 standard has defined two types of authentication methods, Open System and Shared Key. Open System authentication is a null algorithm. Shared Key authentication is an algorithm where both the transmitting node and the receiving node share an authentication key to perform a checksum on the original message. By default, IEEE 802.11 wireless devices operate in an open system network. Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) data encryption is utilized when the wireless nodes or access points are configured to operate in Shared Key authentication mode. There are three shared key methods implemented in NETGEARs 802.11a solutions: the standard based 40-bit WEP data encryption and 128-bit WEP data encryption plus the extended 152-bit WEP data encryption. The forty-bit WEP data encryption method allows for a five-character (forty-bit) input. Additionally, 24 factory-set bits are added to the forty-bit input to generate a 64-bit encryption key. (The 24 factory-set bits are not user configurable.) This encryption key will be used to encrypt/decrypt all data 7
transmitted via the wireless interface. Some vendors may refer to the 40-bit WEP data encryption as 64-bit WEP data encryption since the actual encryption key used in the encryption process is 64 bits wide. The 128-bit WEP data encryption method consists of 104 configurable bits and the 152-bit WEP data encryption method consists of 128 configurable bits Similar to the forty-bit WEP data encryption method, the remaining 24 bits are factory set and not user configurable.

Wireless Channel Selection
IEEE 802.11a utilizes 300 MHz of bandwidth in the 5 GHz Unlicensed National Information Infrastructure (U-NII) band. Though the lower 200 MHz is physically contiguous, the FCC has divided the total 300 MHz into three distinct domains, each with a different legal maximum power output.

IEEE 802.11a uses Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), a new encoding scheme that offers certain benefits over a spread spectrum in channel availability and data rate. The 802.11a uses OFDM to define a total of 8 non-overlapping 200 MHz channels across the 2 lower bands; each of these is divided into 52 subcarriers and each carrier is approximately 300 KHz wide. By comparison, 802.11b uses only 3 non-overlapping channels.

Determine the Configuration of your Wireless Network
Before installing the HE102 Wireless Access Point, you should make sure that your Ethernet network is up and working with a computer. Youll be connecting the access point to the Ethernet network so that computers with the 802.11a Wireless Adapter will be able to communicate with computers on the Ethernet network. For each computer that you want to communicate with the access point, you must have an IEEE 802.11a compatible wireless adapter installed in the computer. In order to set up the access point, you will need to determine the network settings of your wireless network, as follows. What is the SSID for your wireless network? ________________________________ The Service Set Identification (SS ID) identifies the wireless local area network. The default Service Set Identification (SS ID) is Wireless, however, you may customize it by using up to 32 alphanumeric characters. We recommend that you write your customized SSID on the line above. Note: In order for the HE102 Wireless Access Point to communicate with a wireless adapter, both must be configured with the same SSID. For the access point and wireless nodes to communicate with each other, all must be configured with the same SSID. Which wireless channel should you use? __________________________________ The HE102 Wireless Access Point will communicate with other 802.11a wireless devices in the pre-selected channel. For more information on reviewing the channel selections for your operations, please refer to the charts on page 10.
Note: Any access points configured to adjacent channels in the same vicinity will not interfere with each other. What is the WEP encryption key? _________________________________________ The absence of a physical connection between nodes makes the wireless links vulnerable to information theft. To provide a certain level of security from eavesdroppers and hackers, you can enable WEP encryption. The following information is needed to determine the WEP encryption level. The default WEP encryption key number is 1, and the default key size is 64 bits. Please refer to page 7 for more details. Note: The key number as well as the key value used by both the HE102 Wireless Access Point and wireless nodes must be the same. How to find the name of your Access Point: The access point name, such as netgear1d4b5, represents a unique identifier for each HE102. It is used when you need to access and configure the access point from the Web browser of a computer. To find the name of your access point, refer to the label on the bottom of the access point device. For more information, refer to Chapter 4Access Point Configuration on page 18.
Wireless Access Point Installation
Please follow these steps to successfully install the HE102 Wireless Access Point. 1. Position and mount the HE102 Wireless Access Point. The best location is elevated, such as wall mounted or on the top of a cubicle, and at the center of your wireless coverage area and must be within line of sight of all the mobile devices. 16
Connect the Ethernet Cable. You may use the included category 5 UTP Ethernet cable to connect the Ethernet port on the rear panel of HE102 Wireless Access Point to a 10 Base-T network hub, switch or router.
Connect the Power Cable. Connect the power cord of the HE102 Wireless Access Point power adapter to the 3.3V DC power socket on the rear panel of the access point. Then, plug the power adapter into an A/C power outlet. Note: Use only the power adapter supplied with the HE102 Wireless Access Point, otherwise the HE102 may be damaged.
Check the setup. The Power light should be lit. It might take a few seconds after the power is applied to the access point for the power light to appear. The Ethernet Link light should be on. If the connection is a 100 Mbps connection, the light is green. If it is a 10 Mbps connection, the light is amber. The Ethernet connection light also flashes to indicate that data has been sent and received by the access point. The Wireless Link light should be on and blinking. A slow blink indicates that the access point is looking for wireless nodes, or that very little wireless activity is taking place. A fast blink indicates that the access point is receiving or transmitting wireless data.
CHAPTER 4ACCESS POINT CONFIGURATION
The HE102 Wireless Access Point can be configured remotely from either Microsoft I.E or the Netscape web browser on your computer. 1. Launch your web browser and enter the name of your access point in the Address or Location box. To find the name of your access point, refer to the labels on the bottom of your access point. The access point name should be similar to this, netgear10d4b5, where 10d4b5 is the last 6 digits of the MAC address of the HE102. Your computer will automatically find the AP with the specified access point name. 2. NETGEARs HE102 Web Server home page will appear:
Note: You may access the HE102 Web Server home page, as displayed on the previous page, by specifying either the IP address or the access point name of the HE102 within the same subnet. 3. If this is your first time displaying the HE102 Web Server home page, click AP Setup to configure the access point. If you have already entered and saved your AP password, select any menu option.
Access Point Setup
To setup your access point, complete the following: 1. 2. Choose the AP Setup option from the HE102 Web Server home page. The Enter Network Password window will be displayed. The first time you see this window, you must enter the default user name admin with the default password 1234. Note: Both the user name and password are case sensitive.
You may change the password at any time after this point by choosing Password from the AP Setup menu. 3. Click OK. The Wireless LAN Setup window will be displayed. 19
Wireless LAN Setup
To setup your wireless LAN, complete the following: 1. Choose the Wireless LAN setup option from the AP Setup menu on the HE102 Web Server home page.
Specify your configuration settings. When you are done, click Apply and then the Reboot AP button for the changes to take effect. The Wireless LAN Setup screen lets you configure various wireless LAN parameters. Please refer to the chart on the following page for specific details.
Wireless LAN Configuration Parameters
CONFIGURATION DESCRIPTION Enter a 32-character (maximum) service set ID in this field; the characters are case sensitive. When in infrastructure mode, this field defines the service set ID (SSID). The SSID assigned to the wireless node is required to match the access point SSID in order for the wireless node to communicate with the access point. Default: Wireless The unique name represents the access point. Default: Shows the current channel and frequency in use. The wireless channel in use will be between 36 and 64 or 42, 48, 54 with turbo mode enabled. Default: 52 (non-turbo), 42 (Turbo) Enabling turbo mode allows the wireless node to transmit or receive at a higher rate, up to 72 Mbps. Default: Disable Shows the available transmit data rate of the wireless network. The possible data rates supported are: 54 Mbps, 48 Mbps, 36 Mbps, 24 Mbps, 18 Mbps, 12 Mbps, 9 Mbps, and 6 Mbps. It can go up to 72 Mbps if the turbo mode is enabled. Default: Best Set the transmit signal strength of the HE102. The options are full, half, quarter, eighth, and min. Decrease the transmit power if more than one AP is co-located using the same channel frequency. Default: Full Specifies the Beacon Interval value. Enter a value in between 20 to 1000. Default: 100 The Delivery Traffic Indication Message. Speechifies the data beacon rate between 1 and 16384. Default: 1
SSID (Service Set ID)
To set the TCP/IP settings, complete the following: 1. Choose the TCP/IP setup option from the HE102 Web Server home page.
Configure the TCP/IP parameters. When you are done, click Apply and then the Reboot AP button for the changes to take effect.

Note: If the HE102 Wireless Access Point cannot locate a DHCP server upon powering up, it will default to the IP address of 192.168.0.225.
1. To change the current password, choose the Password option from the AP Setup menu in the HE102 Web Server home page. The default password is 1234.
Change your password. Click Apply and then Reboot AP for the new password to take effect.

Note: You must configure all the wireless devices with the same KEY values to communicate.
The Access Control window lets you control the network access privilege of the stations through the HE102 Wireless Access Point. Follow these steps: 1. Choose the Access Control option from the AP Setup menu in the HE102 Web Server home page.
Select the access control options, shown below, then select Reboot AP.
CONFIGURATION Access Control MAC Address Access Control DESCRIPTION Specifies the state of the Access Control List: Disable or Enable. AP Status (Station List)
The Station List window displays the assigned ID, MAC address and the current state of the access point and all the stations currently part of its Basic Service Set (BBS).
Choose the Station List option from the HE102 Web Server home page.
PROBLEM I cannot configure the HE102 using the Web Browser CAUSE There is a possible system problem or you did not specify the right IP address or access point name. SOLUTION Remove and then reconnect the power to the HE102 Wireless Access Point. Make sure your computer and the HE102 Wireless Access Point are in the same subnet if you dont know the IP address of the HE102. Make sure you have clear the Web Browsers cache and enter the correct IP address or access point name. Push the Restore to Default button on the back of the HE102 to restore the factory default settings. The access point has no power. It takes a few seconds for the Power light to be lit. Wait a minute and check the Power light status on the access point. Make sure the power cord is properly connected to the access point.
