AF Nikkor 85mm f/1.4D IF

The 85mm are one of the most classic focal distances for portraits, being the AF85mm f1.4 IF D one of the best lenses of this segment. Some say that it only has good fame, and its small sister is as good as it, even with just a fraction of the price. Although I have both of them, this isn't a comparative review; this will be approached on a specific article.

Body and Design The design of this lens is one of the most beautiful (a sweet). The body is made of metal with a texturized black paint, a solid and trustable construction like other professional lenses from this time, mid 90's. The autofocus or manual focus regulation is present through a ring and a safety button, which blocks accidental changes on the focusing mode. Like other non G lenses, that means, that still have the diaphragm regulation ring, it have a lock for the minor aperture, this way, the diaphragm aperture can be regulate through the camera. The focus ring does not rotate during the autofocus, and in manual focus it is smooth and goes through all distances in only half turn. Even the rear element doesn't move, though looking through it it's possible to see the other elements moving when focusing. This is an excellent feature, because helps to seal the lens against humidity and other particles. None of the external parts of the lens moves during the autofocus, a feature of high performance lenses. The lens-hood comes with the lens and it is screwed on the 77mm diameter of the filter screw. The lid has internal catchers that allow the attachment on the lens even with the lens-hood installed. Due to the metal construction and the big optical elements, this is a reasonable heavy lens for a short tele; however the balance and the handling are perfect.

Performance This lens conduct is simply exceptional, and in spite of not having internal motor, the autofocus speed is really quick and low noised. Although the diaphragm blades are huge, the mechanical system is smooth and noiseless, making low or no vibration at all, even totally closed. What is great, because allow sharp pictures even with relatively low speeds, about 1/50s.

Optic Although all the features being extraordinaire it's the optical quality that catches ones eye. Even on the wide open aperture the sharpness is grand, being extravagant when used on f4 to f8.

The colors are b e a u t i f u l a n d n a t u ra l , principally in f1.4. I like smooth colors and contrast, so I consider them a bit exaggerated from f2.8 on, but I believe that 99% of the photographers would be more pleased with the colors and contrasts of a more closed diaphragm. On the wide open aperture, the tones are slight warm, what makes the green brighter and the skin colors more natural than any other lens. The contrast, relatively smooth, capture the skin texture even in complicated light situations.

It is impressive how a lens that is so sharp can have a bokeh so soft and beautiful. The spherical aberration is low; however, the astigmatism is very emphasized, being responsible for the blur features. When the photo background has extremely luminous points, the blur discs are explicit, with a very homogeneous lighting; though, in normal situations, with a more neutral background, the bokeh is extremely smooth rarely showing discs with sharp edges. The nine curved blades of the diaphragm make a perfect disc in all apertures. I recommend the reading of the article about bokeh in portraits for more information.

Chromatic aberrations can appear on wide open apertures on high contrast and brighten situations. On the remaining apertures it is so discreet that rarely bother. Besides the big frontal element, it doesn't have many problems with flare, but I always use the lens-hood to hide a bit the front of the lens. Geometrical distortions are despicable, only visible on laboratory tests.

Conclusion Every feature of this lens makes of it an optic work of art, designed carefully to be perfect for portraits. It will fit for different tastes of the same subject: If you are like me, that like soft, natural colors and contrasts and extreme blurring, the AF Nikkor 85mm f1.4 IF D is the perfect lens in f1.4. Nevertheless, if you like better saturated colors and perfect contrasts, but not parting with a soft blur without geometric forms on the bokeh this is also a lens for you, because has all this features when closed a bit. Although relatively expensive, this lens is worth every penny and is definitively irreplaceable.
