I purchased this camera from DELL.COM, and could not be any happier! The very first shot I took with this camera was absolutely breathtaking. Wife was looking for a DLSR and we researched the product against others like it (e.g., D5000, D300S, Canon 5D, etc.) for some time.

Photographic Accessories TTL Flash System

TTL Flash System

Nikons professional-quality TTL multiple-flash system is designed so that even a novice can use it with confidence right away. Choose any combination of TTL Speedlights with your Nikon F5, F100, FM3A, F80 or F65 camera. Then use the TTL remote or TTL multi-flash sync cord available for TTL off-camera or multi-flash photography. Youre all set for offcamera multiple-flash photography without the strong shadows. Youll be able to create stunning effects and always get perfectly exposed pictures. Plus, theres no need for complicated manual exposure-value calculation or accessory flash meters.
Note: D1-series and D100 digital SLR cameras cannot be used for multiple flash shooting in D-TTL auto flash mode. Multiple flash is possible with these cameras only in manual or Non-TTL auto flash mode.

Wireless Slave Flash Controller SU-4 When connected to a Nikon Speedlight with ISO-type mounting, this enables wireless TTL flash control when using another Nikon Speedlight as a master unit. The provided Diffuser reduces the built-in Speedlights output, making the slave unit a main flash. (TTL operation is not possible with D1 series or D100.) Note: You have to cancel the Monitor Pre-flash function before using the SU-4 for wireless slave flash operation.
TTL Remote Cord SC-17 (1.5m) The TTL Remote Cord SC-17 comes with two multiple flash terminals, making off-camera TTL flash control easy. TTL Remote Cord SC-14 (1m) This cord is convenient for offcamera TTL automatic flash control of the SB-16A or SB-17 with the Nikon F3 series.
TTL Multi-Flash Sync Cord SC-18 (1.5m)/SC-19 (3m) TTL Multi-Flash Sync Cord SC18/SC-19 connects TTL flash units to each other through the TTL Multi-Flash Adapter AS-10 or TTL Remote Cord SC-17 for multi-flash operation. (TTL operation is not possible with D1 series or D100.)
TTL Remote Cord SC-24 (1.5m) For TTL flash control when using the Nikon F5 with DW-30 or DW-31 and the Nikon F4 series with DW-20 or DW-21. TTL Multi-Flash Adapter AS-10 Attach the AS-10 to the SB80DX, SB-27, SB-22s, SB-30 or SB-16B. Connect additional TTL Speedlight units with the SC-18 or SC-19. The AS-10, featuring tripod socket, controls up to three TTL Speedlight units.

3 Set flash units mode selector to TTL The correct exposure cannot be obtained if the flash mode is set to other than TTL. 4 Turn on flash units and cameras meter When the ready-light on the master flash unit comes on, the ready-light in the cameras viewfinder will also light up. However, the ready-light in the cameras viewfinder does not light up unless the cameras meter is turned on even if the ready-light on the remote flash unit lights up. Set the remote flash units power switch to ON, not the STBY (standby) position. Use of the SB-50DX and SB-23 as remote flash units is not recommended, because the standby function of these units cannot be cancelled. According to the amount of illumination desired, you can shoot with some or all of the remote flash units turned off; however, the master flash unit must be on. 5 Take the picture After tripping the shutter, if the ready-light on a flash unit blinks for approximately three seconds, it indicates that the particular unit fired at maximum output. This could mean the correct exposure was not obtained; check the subject distance and/or aperture in use. When using Nikon SB-17, SB-16A, and/or SB-12 as remote flash unit(s), it is necessary to use Flash Tripod Adaptor AS-11(s). The AS-11 lets you know when the flash is ready to fire, and whether the particular flash unit fired at its maximum output. BASIC KNOWLEDGE FOR TTL MUTIPLE FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY
One important fact to remember is that the effect produced by using more than one flash unit depends on the lighting ratio or balance of illumination between flash units. In determining the role of each flash unit, first decide which will be the main flash unit and which units will be secondary. In general, there are two ways of controlling the lighting ratioby varying the distance between flash and subject, or by diffusing the light by bouncing it off the ceiling or walls or using a diffuser between flash and subject. Of the two, varying the flash-to-subject distance is easier to control. Once you understand the effects gained by varying the flash-to-subject distance, you will be able to understand the various effects on the picture achieved by diffusing the light. To understand the relationship between flash-to-subject distance and the amount of illumination falling on the subject and to position the flash units correctly, consider the following two points: Point 1: Illumination on the subject varies in inverse proportion to the square of the flash-to-subject distance
Illumination from flash unit A Illumination from flash unit B

FOREWORD

Thank you for purchasing this Nikon TTL Multiple Flash Photography accessory. By using more than one electric flash unit, you can eliminate harsh shadows for truly stunning portraits or interior effects. The Nikon accessories introduced in this manual are specially designed for TTL (through-the-lens) multiple flash photography. Because the total amount of light from all flash units is measured through the lens at the camera position, there is no need to calculate exposure or use an independent flash meter. Enjoy a new world of flash photography not possible with a single Speedlight. In multiple flash shooting using cords with digital SLR cameras, set the flash mode to Manual. The TTL auto flash mode is not possible.

When using these cords, the shutter speed and ready-light indication in the viewfinder operate just as do when the flash unit is mounted on-camera. Because the SC-28 features a multiple flash terminal, multiple flash shooting with Speedlights not having a TTL multiple flash terminal (including the SB-600, SB-50DX, SB-30, SB-27, SB-23, SB-22, SB-22s, SB-21B, SB-20, SB-15, SB-11, SB-14 and SB-140) is possible as a master flash unit (except digital SLR cameras). (For TTL multiple flash operation, connect the TTL Multi-Flash Sync Cord SC-18/SC-26 or SC-19/SC-27 to the TTL multiple flash terminal.) Note: The SC-29 does not have a multiple flash terminal. In multiple flash shooting using cords with the SC-29, use a Speedlight featuring a TTL multiple flash terminal. Speedlights not having a TTL multiple flash terminal can be used only as a master flash unit in wireless multiple flash shooting. Refer to your Speedlights instruction manual for details.

Where DA is the flash-to subject distance of flash A and DB is the flash-to-subject distance of flash B. For example, if flash unit A is located 1m away from a subject and unit B is 2m away:

DB DA 2

Therefore, we can say that the lighting ratio of flash units A and B is 4:1. Note that this does not mean the portions of the subject illuminated by flash unit A will be overexposed, but means that those portions will be four times brighter. In general, you can calculate lighting ratio without considering the flash units guide number as long as the unit(s) do not fire at full output. However, when using flash units with different guide numbers where they are expected to fire at full power, you must consider the guide number. Point 2: The combined guide number of flash units in multiple flash photography is the square root of the total of the square of each flash units guide number
Combined guide number = GA2 + GB2 + GC2 +..
wobei DA der Abstand des Blitzgerts A vom Motiv und DB entsprechend von Gert B ist. Wenn z. B. Blitzgert A 1 m und Gert B 2 m vom Motiv entfernt wren, ergbe sich:

where GA is the guide number of flash unit A, GB the guide number of flash unit B, GC the guide number of flash unit C, and so on. For example, when using two Nikon Speedlights; the one with a guide number of 22 and the other with 38, the combined guide number is:

222 + 382 = approx. 44

Gesamt-Leitzahl = GA2 + GB2 + GC2 +..
