Minimum aperture lock (Fig. A)
For programmed auto or shutter-priority auto exposure shooting, use the minimum aperture lock lever to lock the lens aperture at f/22. 1 Set the lens to its minimum aperture (f/22) by aligning it with the aperture index. 2 Slide the lock lever toward the aperture ring, so the two orange dots are aligned. To release the lock, slide the lever in the opposite direction.

The classic lens of 35mm photography on its most popular version this should be the lens kit, like once it was. I admire prime lenses not only for the optic quality but for the singular characteristic of making me think more before making a composition. It's a bit preciosity of mine, but I believe that the 50mm should be the learning lens of photography. This particular version is the most advisable, because it is very low-priced, easy to buy, easy to find and of great optic quality it's the AF Nikkor 50mm f1.8D.
Body and Design We couldn't expect a professional high quality body on a lens that is so inexpensive. The body is made of plastic, but is reasonably resistant and with good finishing touches. The mount is made of metal and the focus ring is rubberized. The frontal aptical element is hidden and protect on the interior of the lens, almost like a lens hood, feature of a very simple optic formula. Few optical elements and a plastic body make this lens a very light equipment.

Performance The auto focus is really fast and quiet. The aperture goes from f1.8 to f22, this represents a gain of depth of field compared to the 50mm f1.4, that goes only to f16. This isn't a big difference for my daily application, I normally only use it up to f4, but if you want to do a long exposition shot the f22 is truly useful. The wide aperture allows you to photograph on low light situations. Compared to the most basic lens that come with the Nikon digital cameras (the AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm f3.5 - f5.6 G ED DX) it gets more than 3 EV on the same focal distance.

Optic The principal attribute of this lens is the fine optical quality. Besides not having any special optical element, its optical design is successful. The sharpness on the center of the image is spectacular. On the corners, due to the spherical aberration, the quality decreases a bit, but it still remains beyond the kit zoom lenses average. Geometric distortions are only seen on more refined tests, on the photos it's impossible to see them.

The contrast on f1.8 is low, also a consequence of the spherical aberration, but the colors are still pleasant. On f2.8 the spherical aberration decreases and the contrast increases a lot. I have a particular taste for low contrast images, where the colors are natural and the color gradation is smooth. However, that doesn't mean photos with a washed aspect, with the images seeming to have a whitish film.

Conclusion This is a highly recommended lens, and in my opinion this should be one of the options to come with cameras. Compact, light, multipurpose and of an excellent optical quality, I recommend it as the most appropriate lens for beginners and for who is getting a lens kit together. The only advantage of having a basic lens like the AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm f3.5- f5.6 G ED DX is the zoom versatility, covering several focal distances. In all the other features the AF Nikkor 50mm f1.8 D is superior.This should be seriously considered when choosing the first lens.

As a fast lens, it can produce a good out-of-focus area if used on f1.8, and this is a good feature for taking portraits. When discs appear on the blurred area, normally they have sharp edges and uniform lighting. That doesn't result in an ideal Bokeh for a portrait lens, but it isn't bad either. Chromatic aberrations are more usual on wide open apertures, but generally are discreet and don't affect the image very much. It is very resistant to flare, that appears only on wide open apertures with a direct back light, and the ghosting is nearly inexistent.
