Introduction
Thank you for purchasing the Nikon Circular Polarizing Filter II. This line of filters is designed to be used with Nikon autofocus, auto-exposure SLRs. It also works with manual focus cameras and is effective with both color and black and white film.

Important

If possible, avoid getting water on the filter or smudging it with fingerprints. If water stains or smudges get on the filter, remove them using a soft clean cotton cloth moistened with pure ethanol alcohol or lens cleaning solution. Do not leave these filters in locations subject to high temperatures, high humidity, or direct sunlight for a long time.

Attaching the filters

Hold the attachment ring of the filter and screw it clockwise into the front threads of the lens. Using a filter of a different diameter or thickness may cause vignetting. Performance is not guaranteed if two or more filters are stacked together.
Notes on using hoods and avoiding vignetting
Most dedicated bayonet hoods, except certain models, can be used without causing vignetting. This includes the dedicated screw-in hood HN-31 for the AF 85mm f/1.4D and the built-in hood for the AF-S 300mm f/4D. Slip-on type hoods cannot be used with these filters. Use the screw-in hood HN-9 for the AF 28mm f/1.4D and HN-22 for the 35-200mm f/3.5-4.5 instead. With the following lenses and hoods, circular polarizing filters cause vignetting. Lens

Major features

In general, light reflected from water, glass, or other shiny materials is polarized and adversely affects image definition. Circular polarizing filters reduce or eliminate unwanted reflections and increase the overall contrast of subjects in low-contrast situations. Usually, light from the sky is polarized due to reflections and dispersions in the air. Circular polarizing filters cut these reflections, making the sky bluer or intensifying colors. Nikon made its line of Circular Polarizing Filter II much thinner and lighter than conventional models, allowing many lenses to be used without causing vignetting, and applied multiple layer coatings on both sides to reduce ghost images and flare. Nikon Circular Polarizing Filter II features the same attachment size as the front threads of the lens, allowing attachment of a regular lens cap. Many dedicated bayonet hoods and certain optional hoods can be used with these filters without causing vignetting (see the table that follows).

How to use

While looking through the cameras viewfinder, turn the adjustment ring until you obtain the desired effect. To deepen the color of a blue sky, turn the adjustment ring until the viewfinder image becomes the darkest. Slight color casts may appear in the viewfinder, but will not register on the actual film. With AF cameras having 3D matrix or multi-sensor metering, the correct exposure may not be obtained. In this case, use center-weighted metering. For cameras having a TTL exposure meter, no exposure compensation is required. For other cameras, make exposure compensation by approx. 2 to 4 filter factors (+1 to +2 f/stops). With lenses whose lens barrel rotates during AF operation, perform focusing before adjusting the filter. (Note that focus may be off slightly while adjusting the filter under certain conditions.) With a dedicated bayonet hood, be sure to attach the hood after adjusting the filter.

Thank you for purchasing a Nikon filter. In order to use your new filter correctly, be sure to read this instruction manual thoroughly. 2. Photographing blue sky A blue sky is composed of dispersed sunlight, and is normally polarized. With a circular polarizing filter, it is possible to block the light reflected from airborne vapor or minute dust particles, thus making a blue sky look even bluer. In monochrome photography, you can also accentuate the photographic subject by deepening sky tones without increasing contrast in the rest of the photo. In color photography, the unnatural colors caused by reflected sunlight can be eliminated. These filters are especially effective when photographing blue sky at a right angle to the direction of the sunlight, i.e., shooting the sky just above the horizon when the sun is straight above you, or shooting the sky directly overhead at sunrise or at sunset.
Position the filter holder in the lens securely. Note that the filter bay is not dust proof or waterproof.

Features

Using the filter (Fig. B)
Before taking a photograph, turn the rotating ring of the circular polarizing filter while looking at the image in the viewfinder. Find the position that is most effective in reducing the reflected light. A slight color difference may be noticeable in the viewfinder when the filter is rotated, but this will not affect the photograph.
These circular polarizing filters are designed for use in combination with telephoto lenses equipped with a slip-in filter holder, and reduce glare from non-metallic surfaces such as glass and water. Other filter features include: Prevention of focusing/metering errors that occur when using AF cameras fitted with regular polarizing filters. Effective for both color and monochrome photography. Can also be used with non-AF cameras

Notes on use

Use center-weighted metering. Multi-sensor metering may result in incorrect exposure. When using a non-TTL exposure metering cameras, some exposure compensation is required. The exposure factor will vary depending upon the photographing angle relative to the reflecting surface of the subject, the wavelength of the light, the color sensitivity of the film, and other factors. However, a factor of 2 to 4 (+1 to +2 F-stops) is normally sufficient. Do not store the filter in locations subject to high temperature, high humidity or direct sunlight.

Installation (Fig. A)

Replace the current filter holder inserted in the lens with the desired circular polarizing filter holder. 1 For the circular polarizing filter holder, make sure that the mounting index on its knob is parallel to the filter. 2 Insert the circular polarizing filter holder into the filter slot. The arrow labelled FRONT should be pointed toward the front of the lens. 3 Press down the holder knob and turn it clockwise by 90 so that the mounting index on the knob is at a right angle to the filter.

Advantages

1. Photographing reflective subjects Light reflected off smooth surfaces such as glass, shiny plastic, ceramic, tile, wood, paper or water is usually polarized. By reducing or blocking this reflected light with a circular polarizing filter, you can create more realistic and attractive images of the subject.
