I have always been one to take a lot of photo...  Easy to use, lens protection, durable No burst mode, only 2.1 mp, movie mode not very useful I have to admit that when I purchased this (June 2003) it was an impluse buy.

I bought this camera from DIXONS in OCT 02, in the sale for £159. self portrait mode, quality images not enough manual adjustments This camera takes excellent pictures in normal conditions. Easy to take pictures at any angle thanks to the tilting lense Slow start up and reset The Nikon Coolpix 2500 practically screams "party!" color and unusual shape are certain to attract attention.

2.0 About software and firmware The Firmware Uploader Software for the E2500 Ver.1.1 is a computer program that updates the firmware in your Coolpix 2500 (E-2500). The firmware is a program, which runs inside the camera and controls its operation. By running the Uploader Software you will install the new firmware in the camera. The process of transferring the new firmware from the computer to the camera is sometimes called Uploading, Upgrading or Updating the firmware. If your camera is version 1.0 it is recommended that you update the firmware in your camera to 1.1 in order to benefit from improved operating performance. The entire package (Uploader software and new firmware for the camera) is supplied in a single file, which is compressed for distribution over the Internet. Before performing a firmware update, you must de-compress the files back to their original format.
3.0 Improvements and bug fixes in version 1.1
The principal changes to the camera firmware with the release of version 1.1 are in the form of the following improvements to product performance and minor bug fixes (not listed): 1. Shooting Data is now maintained even when photos have been rotated using the rotation function included with the Windows XP OS. 2. The transfer button on the camera can now be used when the transfer protocol is set to PTP with Windows XP or Mac OS X (version 10.1.3 or later) and Nikon View 5.1 or later. 3. Support for Exif2.2 (popularly known as Exif Print) 4. Problems occurring when images were rotated under Windows XP have been corrected 4.0 Restrictions on Usage This utility will update the firmware in your Coolpix 2500 to version 1.1. It can only be used if the version of the firmware in your Coolpix 2500 is version 1.0 and is not suitable for use with any other model of Coolpix camera.
5.0 Warnings Your Coolpix 2500 could malfunction should any of the problems listed below occur while the firmware is being upgraded. Please exercise all necessary caution during the upgrade. The upgrade can be performed for you at a Nikonauthorized service center in the event that you do not have the equipment necessary to perform the upgrade, or are otherwise unsure that you would be able to perform the upgrade yourself. Your Coolpix 2500 could malfunction should any of the following occur during upgrade: 1. The camera turns off during the upgrade process 2. The data cable is disconnected 3. A problem occurs with the computer 4. The upgrade is performed in a place where there is excessive electrical noise. The camera could also malfunction if you make a forced exit from the uploader or another application interferes with the uploader during the upgrade. Be sure to exit any other applications before running the uploader software.

6.0 Confirming the current firmware version 1. Turn the camera Off 2. Hold down the MENU button. 3. Turn the camera to Playback mode while continuing to hold down the MENU button until an image appears. The screen will display the current firmware version like: E2500V1.0. If it reads other than 1.0, your firmware should not be updated. 4. Turn the camera Off. This completes the version confirmation procedure. 7.0 Prepare for the Upgrade Please make sure that you have the following items available 1. Power source - any one of the following: a. The Nikon EH-60 AC Adapter. b. A fully charged EN-EL2 2. Nikon Coolpix 2500 USB Cable 3. Coolpix 2500 Users Manuals 4. Download and decompress the appropriate version (Macintosh or Windows) of the updater files. NOTE: Please use only authentic Nikon AC adapters and cables; other products may damage the COOLPIX 2500.
8.0 Installing the Uploader Application-Macintosh The Mac OS driver that helps control camera operation cannot also handle the firmware update, so a different driver must be installed for the update and then removed afterwards. To install the driver: 1. Download and decompress the 2500v11mu.sit file 2. A folder called E2500 firmware 1_1 will be created with the following contents: a. firmware.bin: firmware that will be installed in your camera b. Uploader Storage 1.0: the uploader program c. Nikon E2500 Uploader Installer: Firmware updater driver installer 3. Verify that the camera is NOT connected to the computer. 4. Double-click Nikon E2500 Uploader Installer to launch the installer.
5. When the installer window is displayed, click Continue to install the driver(s). 6. When installation is complete, a message reporting that the operation was successful will be displayed. Click the Restart button to reboot the computer and continue. 7. Follow the instructions in step 9.0, below, to use the Uploader to update the cameras firmware. 9. 0 Installation of the Uploader Application- Windows 1. Download 2500V11wu.zip to your computer's desktop. 2. Decompress 2500V11wu.zip. This will create the folder "E2500V11" containing the following files: a. firmware.bin: firmware that will be installed in your camera b. Uploader.exe: the uploader program 10.0 Upgrading the Firmware 1. Connect the camera to the computer with the USB cable. 2. Insert a Compact Flash card into the camera. 3. Connect the AC power adapter EH-60 to the camera and plug the power cable into a power outlet. Users who prefer a battery power source should insert a fully charged Nikon EN-EL2 rechargeable battery described above. *The uploader may fail if a battery that is not fully charged is used. 4. Set the camera's USB mode to Mass Storage. A firmware upgrade cannot be performed with USB mode set to PTP. See the camera's reference manual for instructions on adjusting USB mode settings. 5. Confirm that the computer is on and ready for operation. Exit all software applications. 6. Connect the camera to the computer with the USB cable. 7. Turn the Coolpix 2500 digital camera On. When the camera is connected to the computer, the camera will enter into PC transfer mode. 8. Double-click the Uploader program icon to launch the uploader software. 9. When the message "Click Upload button to start the update" is displayed, click Upload. After clicking the Upload button, the upload process cannot be interrupted until the "Writing Firmware is complete" message is displayed.

Do not perform a forced exit of the uploader software, turn the camera off, or disconnect the USB cable during the upload process. Doing so could result in a malfunction of the Coolpix 2500 Digital Camera. 10. The firmware upload process will begin. A progress bar will appear on your computer monitor. (This progress bar may flash during the upload process on Windows PCs.) During the upload process, the following messages will be displayed. "Uploading. DO NOT TURN CAMERA OFF!" "Writing Firmware. DO NOT TURN CAMERA OFF! " The upload process will take between three and ten minutes depending on your computer model and settings. IMPORTANT: On computers running Windows ME and Windows 2000, the Windows message "Device removal warning" will appear during the upload process. This is a standard system message and can be ignored. When the "Writing Firmware is complete" message appears, click OK at the bottom of the "Device removal warning" dialog to exit this warning. IMPORTANT: On computers running Windows XP, a "Removable Disk" window may appear during the upload process. This is a standard system message and can be ignored. When the "Writing Firmware is complete" message appears, click Cancel to close the "Removable Disk" window. If Windows Explorer is displayed, click the Close box to exit the Explorer. 11. The firmware update is complete when the message "Writing Firmware is complete" is displayed. Click Close. 12. Remove the camera from the system. a. Windows XP users: Click the "Unplug or Eject Hardware" icon in the taskbar and select Disable USB Mass Storage Device Drive (E:) from the menu that appears. (The name displayed for the drive (ex. "E:") may vary by computer.) b. Windows 2000 Professional users: Click the "Unplug or Eject Hardware" icon in the taskbar and select Disable USB Mass Storage Device Drive (E:) from the menu that appears. (The name displayed for the drive (ex. "E:") may vary by computer.) c. Windows Me users: Click the "Unplug or Eject Hardware" icon in the taskbar and select Disable USB Disk (E:) from the menu that appears. (The name displayed for the drive (ex. "E:") may vary by computer.) d. Windows 98SE users:
Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop and select the removable disk corresponding to the camera. Open the File menu and select Eject. e. Macintosh users: Drag the "untitled" disk icon from the desktop to the trash. 13. Disconnect the USB cable. 14. Turn the camera off. 15. Refer to step 6 above to confirm that the firmware version is now 1.1. This completes the update. Note: If you wish to use Nikon View, you will need to restart your system. If you adjusted the camera's USB mode setting for firmware upgrade, return USB mode settings to their previous setting. 11.0 Removing the Uploader Application (Macintosh only) The Mac OS driver that helps control camera operation cannot also handle the firmware update, so a different driver was installed for the update and now needs to be removed. To remove the driver: 1. Launch the installer by double-clicking Nikon E2500 Uploader Installer 2. By default, Easy Install is selected in the installer window's pop-up menu. Select Uninstall from the menu and click Continue. 3. When the removal is complete, a message stating that the operation was successful will be displayed. Click the Restart button to complete the operation. * Nikon View cannot be used until the removal of the uploader driver has been completed.

12.0 If things do not go as planned The uploader software may not function as expected on some models of personal computer. 1.Error in writing Firmware message
Should this occur, click "Close" to exit the uploader, disconnect the serial cable and follow the steps above to confirm the camera firmware version. If the firmware version displayed is "E2500V1.1," the upgrade was successful. Any other display, "E2500V1.0" for example, indicates that your computer cannot be used to upgrade camera firmware. In this case you will need to take your camera to the nearest Nikon-authorized service center to upgrade the firmware.
2. Compatibility problems may exist between the uploader and certain computers, making normal communication with the Coolpix 2500 impossible. When the computer is unable to communicate with the camera, the upgrade will stop and start repeatedly. In extreme cases, this process of interruption and resumption may repeat indefinitely. Should this occur, press the Option, Command and Esc keys (on the Macintosh) or Ctrl, Alt and Delete keys (Windows) simultaneously to force the program to quit. Restart your computer. If this problem occurs, your computer cannot be used to upgrade camera firmware. To upgrade the firmware, you will need to take your camera to the nearest Nikon-authorized service center.
