To choose an image quality setting, press the button. The quality setting will change each time the button is pressed (note that an image quality of HI is only available when the mode dial is set to M-REC). Image quality is displayed in the control panel and LCD monitor.
BASIC (high compression) NORMAL (medium compression) FINE (low compression)
While a setting of NORMAL represents the best trade-off between memory and image quality in most cases, a setting of BASIC can be used to save memory. A setting of FINE is suitable for photographs that will be enlarged or printed at high resolution.
Using the Buttons (A-REC, M-REC): Image Quality

Photographs taken at an image quality setting of HI are stored in uncompressed TIFF format and show no loss in quality. An 8MB memory card is however sufficient to store only one such photograph at a time. To take photographs at an image quality of HI, turn the mode dial to M-REC, then press the button until HI is displayed in the control panel.
Note HI image quality is not available at a multi-shot (CONTINUOUS) setting of 16-shots or when BSS is on (see the Pocket Guide, Taking Photographs).

Using the Buttons (PLAY)
This chapter describes the following playback functions: viewing photographs deleting unwanted photographs individually These functions can be accessed using the zoom buttons (wv) and the three buttons below the control panel. The options available in the playback menu are described in the following chapter.
Follow these steps to view or delete photographs stored on the memory card:
1 Turn the mode dial to PLAY.
The most recently recorded image will be displayed in the LCD monitor. photo you want to view from a menu of preview images. To view photos one at a time: Use the zoom buttons (wv) to view photos one at a time. Press the zoom-out button (w) to view photographs recorded before the current photo, or press the zoom-in button (v) to view images recorded after the current photo. Hold either button down to scroll quickly to a particular frame number without viewing intervening photos. The photograph displayed will not change, but the frame number at the bottom right corner of the LCD monitor will increase or decrease rapidly. Release the zoom button when the desired frame number is reached to display the photo.

Tips By default, only photographs in the current folder are displayed in playback mode. To select another folder for viewing, or to view photos in all folders, use the FOLDERS item in the playback menu (see The Camera Menus: The Playback Menu, below). If there are no photographs in the current folder, the message, card contains no image data will be displayed. Select another folder using the FOLDERS item in the playback menu. If there are no photographs in any folder, you will be able to use the playback menu (see below), but you will not be able to play images back. Photographs selected for full-size display are shown briefly at low resolution while they are being read from memory. This feature allows you to page rapidly through the photographs in memory without waiting for every item to be displayed at full resolution. Before the image is displayed at full resolution, the screen will briefly go black. The first and last photographs in memory are linked. Pressing the zoomin button (v) when the last photo in memory is selected takes you to the first photo; pressing the zoom-out button (w) when the first photo is selected takes you to the last photo.
The MONITOR button The MONITOR button controls the LCD monitor. Press the MONITOR button once to hide photo information, a second time to turn the monitor off, and a third time to turn the monitor on with information showing.

- 18 -

To select a photo for viewing: Press the thumbnail ( ) button once to display a menu of nine preview images, or press it twice for a menu of four images. A number at the bottom right corner of each preview gives the position of the photograph in memory. Use the zoom buttons (wv) to highlight the photo you want to view, then press the shutter-release button to view it at full size.
4 If desired, you can zoom in on the current
photo by pressing the button. The center portion of the image will be enlarged to fill the LCD monitor. Press the button once for a magnification of 2, twice for a magnification of 3. Press the button a third time to view the photograph at full size.
3 View the information for the current photograph. When first displayed, photographs are shown with the following information: the time of recording, image quality and size, folder name, file number and type (JPEG or TIFF), the total number of shots that can be played back, and a frame number giving the position of the current photograph in memory.

The Camera Menus
This chapter supplements Other Camera Functions in the Pocket Guide, exploring the options available in the menus for each operating mode. The bulk of the shooting options available in the M-REC menu are described in the Pocket Guide, Taking Photographs.
SEQ.XFER Allows photographs to be assigned unique filenames, preventing photographs from being accidentally overwritten when copied to a computer. See below for details. DATE Set the cameras internal clock-calendar as described in First Steps: Setting the Time and Date, above.

The A-REC Menu

To display the A-REC menu, turn the mode dial to A-REC and press the MENU button. The following options are available: FOLDERS Create new folders, rename or delete existing folders, or choose the folder in which to store subsequent photos. LCD BRIGHT (LCD Brightness) Adjust the brightness of the LCD monitor. AUTO OFF When operated on battery power, the camera automatically enters sleep mode if no operations are performed for thirty seconds. Using Folders (A-REC, M-REC)
By default, photographs taken with the COOLPIX 800 are stored in the memory card in a folder labeled NIKON. To make it easier to locate photographs during playback, you can create additional folders and organize your photographs by theme. The FOLDERS menu enables you to select the folder in which subsequent photographs will be stored or choose the folder from which photographs will be played back. You can also create folders, rename existing folders, or delete folders.
Selecting a Folder If more than one folder exists on the memory card, you can select the folder that will be used for playback or to store subsequent photographs in A-REC and M-REC modes. To select a folder, simply highlight it using the zoom buttons (wv) and press the shutterrelease button. Except in the case of the default folder, NIKON, the name of the current folder is displayed at upper right in the LCD monitor. Photographs are stored in the folder shown in the LCD monitor at the time the photograph is taken.

SEQ.XFER

Photographs taken by the COOLPIX 800 are stored as image files. Each file is assigned a name which includes a four-digit number. Because no two photographs on any given memory card will have the same number at the same time, there is no possibility of confusion so long as you continue to use a single memory card without formatting it. If you format the card or use a new card, however, a previously-assigned number may be used again. If you then copy the new photograph to a computer on which you had saved the earlier photograph, the earlier photograph may be overwritten. This can be prevented using the SEQ.XFER option. The following SEQ.XFER settings are available: Setting How it works When a new card is inserted, numbering will begin again from the lowest number available on that card. The same file number may be used twice on different cards. When a new card is inserted in the camera, numbering will continue from the lowest number available on the previous card. The same file number will not be assigned twice. Resets sequential numbering to the lowest number available on the current card. When a new card is inserted, file numbering will continue from the lowest number available on the previous card.
SEQ.XFER is available from the A-REC and M-REC setup menus. The SEQ.XFER setting selected in A-REC mode remains in effect when the mode dial is turned to M-REC; similarly, if the setting is changed when the camera is in M-REC mode, the change remains in effect when the mode dial is turned to A-REC. To change the setting in M-REC mode, select SET UP from the second page of the M-REC menu and then follow steps 23, below. To change the setting in A-REC mode:

Error Messages
When there is a problem with the flash-memory card or with the cameras internal programming and circuitry, an error message will appear superimposed on the image in the LCD monitor. Below is a list of error messages that may be displayed by the COOLPIX 800 and the steps that should be taken to deal with them. The camera can not detect a flashmemory card. Turn the mode dial to OFF and confirm that the flash-memory card has been correctly inserted in the camera as described in First Steps: Inserting and Removing Memory Cards. Use a Nikon memory card.

There is not enough memory to record more photographs. No photographs can be taken until some images have been deleted from memory as described in Using the Buttons (PLAY) or The Camera Menus: The Playback Menu. The camera has encountered an error while saving a photo or has run out of file numbers in the current folder. Try saving photos to a different folder. If the SEQ.XFER option is on, choose OFF or RESET from the SEQ.XFER menu (see The Camera Menus: The M-REC Menu). If the error persists, it may indicate that the card is not properly formatted. Transfer all photographs stored on the card to a computer and format the card as described in The Camera Menus: The A-REC Menu. This error occurs in playback mode when the current folder contains no images. Select a different folder from the FOLDERS menu. You will not be able to play back photos until at least one photo has been recorded on the card, although you will still be able to use the menus and the camera will function normally in M-REC and AREC modes. - 50 -

Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 2.0 About software and firmware The Firmware Uploader Software for the E800 Ver.1.1 is a computer program that updates the firmware in your COOLPIX 800 (E-800). The firmware is a program, which runs inside the camera and controls its operation. By running the Uploader Software you will install the new firmware in the camera. The process of transferring the new firmware from the computer to the camera is sometimes called Uploading, Upgrading or Updating the firmware.
If your camera is version 1.0 it is recommended that you update the firmware in your camera to 1.1 in order to benefit from improved operating performance. The entire package (Uploader software and new firmware for the camera) is supplied in a single file, which is compressed for distribution over the Internet. Before performing a firmware update, you must de-compress the files back to their original format. 3.0 Improvements and bug fixes in version 1.1 The principal changes to the camera firmware with the release of version 1.1 are in the form of the following improvements to product performance and minor bug fixes (not listed): 1. Improvement in white balance control in fixed aperture mode If you select AE Lock mode in manual white balance mode, the image sometimes becomes green. This problem has been solved. 4.0 Restrictions on Usage This utility will update the firmware in your COOLPIX 800 to version 1.1. It can only be used if the version of the firmware in your COOLPIX 800 is version 1.0 and is not suitable for use with any other model of Coolpix camera. This version of the firmware can only update NTSC cameras. 5.0 Warnings Your COOLPIX 800 could malfunction should any of the problems listed below occur while the firmware is being upgraded. Please exercise all necessary caution during the upgrade. The upgrade can be performed for you at a Nikonauthorized service center in the event that you do not have the equipment necessary to perform the upgrade, or are otherwise unsure that you would be able to perform the upgrade yourself. Your COOLPIX 800 could malfunction should any of the following occur during upgrade: 1. The camera turns off during the upgrade process 2. The data cable is disconnected 3. A problem occurs with the computer 4. The upgrade is performed in a place where there is excessive electrical noise. The camera could also malfunction if you make a forced exit from the uploader or another application interferes with the uploader during the upgrade. Be sure to exit any other applications before running the uploader software. 6.0 Confirming the current firmware version
1. Turn the camera off 2. Hold down the MENU button. 3. Turn the select dial to A-REC while continuing to hold down the MENU button until an image appears. The screen will display the current firmware version like: E800V1.0. If it reads other than 1.0, your firmware should not be updated. 4. Turn the select dial Off. This completes the version confirmation procedure. 7.0 Preparation Please make sure that you have the following items available 1. Power source - any one of the following: a. The Nikon EH-30 AC Adapter. b. Four new alkaline or other high capacity batteries, within three months of date of manufacture c. Four fully charged rechargeable batteries (size SUM-3 or AA) 2. Windows users connect the Nikon SC-EW2 cable to the serial communication port. b. Macintosh users connect the Nikon SC-EM2 conversion cable to the serial communication port. Connect the Nikon SC-EW2 to the SC-EM2 conversion cable. For details, refer to the COOLPIX 800 users manual. 2.Turn on the COOLPIX 800. If you have a Nikon EH-30 AC adapter, please connect it to the COOLPIX 800, and plug it into an AC outlet. If you do not have a Nikon EH-30 AC adapter, please install four new alkaline batteries or four fully charged rechargeable batteries. 3.If you are using batteries, be sure to set the auto power-off time (on the SETUP menu) to 30 minutes, to prevent the camera power from turning off automatically during the upgrade. For details, refer to the users manual. This setting is not required if you are using the AC adapter. 4.Connect the serial cable from the personal computer to the serial port on the COOLPIX 800. For details on connection, refer to the COOLPIX 800 users manual. 5.Set the COOLPIX 800 select dial to A-REC.

9.0 Upgrading the Firmware 1. Launch the Updater Software program. a. Windows users open Explorer, and double-click on the UPLOADER file. b. Macintosh users double-click on the UPLOADER icon. The file called Firmware is the actual firmware, which will be transferred to the camera. 3. When the text Click Upload button to start the update appears in the dialog box, click the Upload button. Once you have pressed this button, do not stop or interrupt the utility while it is in progress, or damage to the COOLPIX 800 may result. 4. The firmware upgrade process will begin. This should take between three and ten minutes depending on the speed and configuration of our computer. The following messages will be displayed during execution: Uploading: The firmware is being transferred to the COOLPIX 800. Writing Firmware: The firmware is being updated. Checking Firmware: The new firmware is being verified. 5. When the text Writing Firmware is complete appears in the dialog box, the process is complete. Click Close to close the utility. 6. Turn the COOLPIX 800 select dial to Off. 7. Disconnect the serial cable. 8. If you turned the sleep timer to 30 minutes reset it to your desired time. This completes the firmware update. 10.0 If things do not go as planned The uploader software may not function as expected on some models of personal computer. 1.Error in writing Firmware message Should this occur, click "Close" to exit the uploader, disconnect the serial cable and follow the steps above to confirm the camera firmware version. If the firmware version displayed is "E800V1.1," the upgrade was successful. Any other display, "E800V1.0" for example, indicates that your computer cannot be used to upgrade camera firmware. In this case you will need to take your camera to the nearest Nikon-authorized service center to upgrade the firmware. 2. Compatibility problems may exist between the uploader and certain computers, making normal communication with the COOLPIX 800 impossible.
When the computer is unable to communicate with the camera, the upgrade will stop and start repeatedly. In extreme cases, this process of interruption and resumption may repeat indefinitely. Should this occur, press the Ctrl, Alt and Delete keys on the computer simultaneously to force the program to quit. Restart your computer. If this problem occurs, your computer cannot be used to upgrade camera firmware. To upgrade the firmware, you will need to take your camera to the nearest Nikon-authorized service center.
